Larry Fellows

Larry Fellows, 68, of Alta, died Tuesday, Jan. 12 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, Jan. 15, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010 from 4-7 p.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake with family present from 5-7 p.m. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery of Storm Lake. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Ehlers

John Ehlers, 92, of Sioux Rapids, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010 at Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. Interment will be in Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be on Friday, Jan. 15 from 6-8 p.m. at Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. Sliefert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Harold J. Meyer

Harold J. Meyer, 92, of Truesdale, died Monday, April 26, at Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 29, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, April 28, from 5-8 p.m. with a rosary service at 5 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery with full Military Rites by the Alta VFW. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Everett Delp

Everett Delp, 93, of Storm Lake, died Monday, June 21, at Buena Vista Manor. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 24, at 10:00 a.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Cory Grove Cemetery in Sac City.

Donna Cooley

Donna Cooley, age 68, of Storm Lake died Saturday, August 2, 2003, at her home.

Donna Bauer Cooley was born icon March 13, 1935 at rural Quimby, Iowa to Harry & Louise (Brickman) Bauer. As a child, Donna lived with her parents in the Quimby-Holstein area. In 1953, Donna graduated from Holstein High School. On April 1, 1954, Donna and Herbert C. Cooley were married icon in Sioux City, Iowa. This union was blessed with two children, one son, Charles Calvin, and one daughter, Cathy Ann.

Donna was a good cook and liked to bake. She was employed as a cook for many years at the Back Bar and at Christopher Jay’s until she retired because of declining health. Donna also did catering. Her specialties were breads and canneloni.

Family was important to Donna. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandchildren. She loved to go to their school activities and to watch them play in sports. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing Bingo and having coffee with her friends. Her door was always open for friends to call.

Donna is survived by her daughter, Cathy Ann Ordonez of Storm Lake; grandchildren Chad Cooley, Craig Cooley, Krystal Perez, Brianna Ordonez and Alex Ordonez; great-grandchildren Tyrone Cooley, Andrew and Austin Cooley, and Gabriela, David Lydia and Elena Perez; one brother Harry Bauer, Jr. of Holstein; and many other relatives and friends.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Herbert Cooley, one son, Charles Cooley, three grandchildren, her brother Les and her sister Ina.

Gladys E. Girardin

Gladys E. Girardin, age 89, of Schaller died Thursday, July 24, 2003 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be Saturday, July 26 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Schaller with Reverend Carol Gailey officiating. Burial will be in the Odebolt Cemetery with The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Friday, July 25 anytime from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00.

Gladys Girardin was born icon in March 17, 1914 at Lamberton, Minnesota, the daughter of Sidney and Nora (Jackson) Jeckell. She was baptized and confirmed in the First Methodist Church in Lamberton, MN. Gladys attended and graduated from high school in Sanborn, Minnesota. After coming to Storm Lake to live, she worked at Council Oak Grocery Store and Page’s Bakery for several years.

On June 19, 1947 Gladys married icon Charles Girardin at the United Methodist Church parsonage in Odebolt, IA. They made their home on a farm north of Schaller until retiring to a home in town. After her husband died in 1989, she moved to Storm Lake.

Gladys enjoyed farm life and homemaking. Her family was very important to her, and she enjoyed making them laugh with the gag gifts she would give. She was very active in the Schaller United Methodist Church and U. M. W holding a treasurer position for the circle group that she belonged to. Gladys also had a special talent for making and decorating wedding cakes.

Survivors include a son Larry and his wife Maxine of Raytown, MO, and a daughter Loa Jeanne Rice and her husband Ed of Alta; six grandchildren: Mary Ann McCormick and her husband Bill, Linda Lujan, Michelle Girardin, Stacia Ryan and her husband John, Dan Rice and his wife Roxanne, Melinda Ebel and her husband Greg; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters: Fernetta Siebrecht and her husband Wayne of Schaller and Naomi Patten and her husband Wilbur of Aurelia; two sisters-in-law: Betty Jeckell of Sac City and Vivian Kuhn and her husband Guy of Trenton, MO; as well as nieces and nephews.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and two sisters.

Houmphanh Phosy

Houmphanh Phosy, age 71, of Storm Lake died Thursday, July 31, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Rites for Houmphanh Phosy will be Saturday, August 2 at 11:30 a.m. at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Houmphanh Phosy was born icon on March 2, 1932 in Xayabory, Laos. During his stay in Laos, he had a difficult childhood, as he was an orphan. However, Mr. Phosy was not distracted by those obstacles from pursuing his dreams.

At the age of 18, he served in the army, and also in the Vietnam War, helping the Americans. In 1959, he was married icon to Pat Phosy and they had five children together. Because of aiding the Americans, he and his family had a legal right to come to the U. S. and became a U.S. citizen. This was where he started his new life.

On September 11, 1987 he and his family moved to the U. S. A. Living in the United States without knowing English did not discourage him from making the best for his family. He was a wonderful husband and father. The hard work paid off, he was retired in 2002. On June 3, 2003, he became very ill from cancer and finally rests in peace on July 31, 2003 at 1:50 p.m.

Mr. Phosy is survived by his wife and his five children.

Mildred E. Bartels

Mildred E. Bartels, age 83, of Storm Lake died Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Douglas Haynes officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be Saturday, August 2, 2003 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present from 6-8:00 p.m.

Mildred E. Bartels was born icon November 15, 1919 to Herman and Maria (Schweer) Bartels at Tobias, Nebraska. She was baptized November 27, 1919 and confirmed April 9, 1933 at the Zion Lutheran Church at Tobias. She received her education at Zion Lutheran Parochial School at Tobias.

Mildred moved to Storm Lake in the spring of 1938. She did house work for different families for the next ten years. At that time she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, rural Storm Lake. She transferred her membership to St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake in 1948.

Starting in 1949, Mildred began working for Drs. Hansen and Prescott at the Buena Vista Clinic until she retired in 1987. She taught Sunday School at St. John’s for 18 years. She was a member of the Choir and the Altar Guild.

Mildred is survived by two brothers, Victor and wife Mathilda Bartels and Eldo and wife Neoma Bartels both of Storm Lake, and a nephew, Dan and wife Desiree Bartels.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Gertrude.

Marian Louise Wernimont

Marian Wernimont, age 74, of Rembrandt passed away Sunday, August 3, 2003 at the Longhouse Northshire Ltc. Nursing Home in Spencer, Iowa.

Funeral services for Marian Wernimont, age 74, of Rembrandt will be held on Thursday, August 7 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery at Sioux Rapids, with the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Friends and family may call at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake any time after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 6, where the family will be present. Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m., a vigil service at 6:30 p.m. and the Rosary will be recited again at 8:30 p.m.

Marian Louise Boyd was born icon August 27, 1928 at the home of her Grandmother Thayer in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Durelle “Bill” and Ila (Thayer) Boyd. She graduated from the Hayes High School in 1946.

On February 22, 1949 she was united in marriage to Marcellus William Wernimont of Sulpher Springs at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. 15 children were born icon to this union.

The couple started farming in the Laurens area and lived in Pocahontas for seven years. In 1956, they moved to Auburn and in 1964 moved to the Rembrandt area where they were dairy farmers, Marcellus and Marian moved into town at Rembrandt in 1980. They stayed busy by attending farmers markets and catering “Dad’s Belgian Waffles” for fund-raisers and special occasions.

Marian’s memberships included St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids and honorary member of St. Joseph’s guild. She was also a member of the Twins Club in Storm Lake.

Her hobbies and interests included gardening, her flowers, baking, reading, sewing and doing fancy work. Her collections include statues of the Virgin Mary, angels and Boyd Bears. Her life’s priority was that of raising of her 15 children. She enjoyed doing whatever she could for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marian felt fortunate to have been raised in a good home herself, and to have a great family of her own.

She is survived by her seven sons and their wives, Michael and Myrna of Sioux Rapids, Mark and Karen of Sac City, Marvin and Cindy of Rembrandt, Martin and Beth of Waterloo, Maynard and Kathy of Clarksdale, Mississippi, Myron and Sandy of Spencer and Milo and Mary also of Sioux Rapids; seven daughters and their husbands, Marilyn and Jim Nelsen of Albert City, Margaret and Scott McDermott of Estherville, Mary and Blair Raveling of Linn Grove, Marita and Don Kenyon of Storm Lake, Maxine and Larry Hoffman of Des Moines, Marsha and John Arndt of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Marlys and Bob Jennings of Algona and a daughter-in-law, Betty Wernimont of Spirit Lake; 34 Grandchildren and 14 Great Grandchildren. Other survivors include her brother James Boyd of Atlantic, sister, Elsie—Mrs. Norbert Kacmarynski of Linn Grove and sisters-in-law, Sister Agnes Wernimont of Hiawatha and Patty Wernimont Pike of Prescott, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant sister Dorothy Mae, husband Marcellus in 1998, son Mendal, granddaughter Lisa Nelsen Sauter, son-in-law Phillip McHugh, parents-in-law Tony and Agnes Wernimont, sister-in-law Melba Boyd, brother-in-law Cleo Wernimont, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Tom Cox and his wife Anna.

Clint Horlacher

James “Clint” Horlacher, age 98, of Storm Lake, died Saturday, September 13, 2003 in Pearce/Sunsites, Arizona.

A visitation will be held Sunday, September 21, 2003 after 4:00 p.m until 8:00 p.m at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home. The family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 at the Funeral Home where there will be a Masonic Service held at 7:00 p.m. Condolences may be sent to the family via the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home website.

Clint Horlacher was born icon on February 26, 1905 to James N. and Mary (Manning) Horlacher on the same farm on which he lived his life. He was a graduate of Storm Lake High School and Iowa State College in Ames and was a member of the Chi Phi Faternity. In 1929 he married icon Mildred Sharp.

Clint was the founding owner and operator of Mellow Dent Hybrid Seed Corn Company, and was a farmer his entire life. He was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, past president of the Buena Vista County Farm Bureau, a member of the Truesdale Farmers Club, a 32nd-degree Mason, a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of the AbuBekr Shrine Temple.

Survivors include his daughter, Polly and husband Frank Fabrizio of Storm Lake, and a grandson, Clint Randell, of Clover, SC. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, Mildred, and a sister, Elizabeth.

A memorial fund for the Charles Wm. Leighton, Jr., Hospice, 319 W. Grant, Wilcox, AZ 85643, has been established in Mr. Horlacher’s honor.

Delmar McGowan

Delmar McGowan, age 74, of Storm Lake died September 11, 2003 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City.

Delmar McGowan was born icon on June 7, 1929 to Urany and Elizabeth (Gerjets) McGowan at Alta, Iowa. He lived his childhood years on the farm northwest of Alta with his parents and family. He attended country school through grade school and graduated from Alta High School in 1946.

On October 13, 1949, Delmar married icon Betty Steward in Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with five children.

Delmar worked at Hy-Grade in Storm Lake for a number of years, and was a federal meat inspector at IBP for a time, then was superintendent of the Storm Lake Municipal Golf Course.

In his spare time, Delmar liked to play golf and cards, and enjoyed traveling and hunting, especially hunting for pheasants. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the New York Yankees.

Delmar was a loving husband, father and grandfather who cherished his family above all earthly interests. He will be forever missed.

Delmar McGowan is survived by his wife, Betty of Storm Lake, his son Terry and wife Ann McGowan of Urbandale, daughters Patricia and husband Dean Batt of Stamford, Nebraska, and Peggy and husband Mark Pottorff of Sergeant Bluff; grandchildren Loretta Batt of Huxley, Philip Batt of Orleans, Nebraska, DeAnna Ruskamp and husband Matt of Lincoln, Nebraska, Ashley Batt of Stamford, Nebraska and Justin, Michelle and Scott Pottorff of Sergeant Bluff; brothers Merlin and wife Delores McGowan, Donald McGowan and Garlan and wife Helen McGowan, all of Alta; sister Karen and husband Russ Gaskill of Alta; and many other relatives and friends.

Mr. McGowan was preceded in death by his parents, sons Gary Allen and Delmar Lee, Jr., his sister Deloris, and brothers Robert and Dennis.

Bounnong Phouangphet

Bounnong Phouangphet, age 55, of Storm Lake died Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Traditional Buddhist rites will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Bounnong Phouangphet was born icon in Laos on July 9, 1948 to Koune and Soutta Synarong. She was married icon in 1979 to Kosonh Phouangphet in Thailand. She was a homemaker who was willing to help anyone in need. She helped raise her younger brother and sisters. Bounnong was an avid gardener.

She is survived by her husband, Kosonh of Storm Lake; daughter: Thanome Sim; son: James Phouangphet; brothers: Bounruong Synarong, Sompong Synarong, Bounthong Synarong, Boonkhout Synarong and La Thabone Synarong; sisters Kongmany Synarong, Manivone Synarong, Oraxone Synarong and Keoninh Phoutsaphone; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, mother and one brother.

David L. Johnson

David L. Johnson, age 52, of Lakeside, Iowa died on Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at St. Luke’s Regional Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Friday, November 21, 2003, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

David L. Johnson was born icon on April 15, 1951 to Howard and Shirley (Reinsel) Johnson at Williams, Iowa. He attended the Northeast Hamilton School, graduating from high school there with the Class of 1969.

On September 4, 1971 David was united in marriage to Amy Bourne at Webster City, Iowa.

He worked several years for the town of Williams, and then went to work for the Illinois Central-Canadian National Railroad, where he was a Road Master. In his spare time, David liked to keep busy, which earned him the nickname of “Project Man.” He was an avid NASCAR racing fan and loved to go fishing whenever he could.

David treasured the people in his life. To him, Family was Family, his Friends were Family, and the people he worked with were Family. He was loved by his Family and will be missed daily.

Survivors include his father, Howard Johnson of Williams; his wife, Amy of Lakeside, IA; his daughter Talitha Johnson of Altoona, PA; three brothers: Don Johnson of Williams, IA, Doug and wife Cindy Johnson of Alden, IA and Drew and wife Patti Johnson of Kings Island, GA; one sister: Dianne Johnson of Randall, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Preceding David in death were his mother and his infant daughter.

Harold Warriner

Harold Warriner, age 72, of Schaller, Iowa died on Friday, November 28, 2003 at Loring Hospital in Sac City, following a long battle with cancer.

Funeral Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, Rural Schaller. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Sunday from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller where the family will be present from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Harold Elmer Warriner was born icon on August 5, 1931 to Elmer and Irma (Wetzstein) Warriner at Ida Grove, Iowa. He lived with his parents as a child on their farm two miles east of Schaller. He attended country school at Eden #9 through the 8th grade, then went on to Schaller High School, graduating with the Class of 1948. Harold was baptized on December 29, 1931 and later confirmed on December 16, 1945 at the Methodist Church in Schaller. On July 7, 1963 he joined Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in rural Schaller and was an active member, holding the office of Deacon from 1969—1971 and again from January 1993—November 2003 and was Secretary of the Church and a member of the Cemetery Committee from January 2000—November 2003.

Harold served his country from January 20, 1951 as a member of the Army Reserves until he retired on December 10, 1959 with the rank of SFC E6.

On May 22, 1955, Harold was united in marriage to Marilyn Miller at the Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Their union was blessed with a son, Duane, and a daughter, Linda. Harold was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather who cherished the time he spent with his family. He was loved by his family and will be missed daily.

Harold spent his life farming and also driving truck and working at the seed plant north of Schaller. After he retired from the plant in 1996, he continued to help out at the farm. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading and woodworking. Harold liked to spend time out of doors and derived great pleasure from gardening and watching and feeding wild birds. He and Marilyn liked to travel and had many fond memories of trips to Branson, Missouri and to Canada.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Schaller; his son Duane Warriner of Schaller and his daughter Linda Westeen of Schaller; three grandchildren: Michael Westeen of Aurelia, Steven Westeen of Schaller and Kimberly Westeen of Schaller; two great-grandchildren: Evan Westeen of Aurelia and Ethan Westeen of Aurelia; one sister: Janette Forney of Sioux City; many nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.

Preceding Harold in death were his parents, Elmer and Irma Warriner.

LeVerne Buffington

LeVerne Haahr Buffington, age 79, of Newell, Iowa died on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Newell.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at 2:00 p.m at the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery.

Friends may call on Monday, November 17, 2003 anytime after 4:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, where the family will be present from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

LeVerne Haahr was born icon on December 17, 1923 on a farm in the Newell area to George and Anna (Bodholdt) Haahr. She spent her childhood living with her parents on farms in the Newell and Sulphur Springs area. LeVerne began her education in a country school near Newell. She graduated from Providence Consolidated School in Sulphur Springs with the Class of 1941.

On December 20, 1942, LeVerne was married icon to Louie Mills Buffington of Glenwood, Iowa in the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa. Their union was blessed with a son, Roger and a daughter, Diane. LeVerne was a loving wife and devoted mother who cherished her family and the time she spent with them. She was a farm wife and partner to her husband until his passing in 1973. She later worked as a bookkeeper for BJK Pump and Gas Company until her retirement in 1988.

LeVerne enjoyed time with her friends and relatives, community activities, music, sewing and listening to radio broadcasts of many years of wonderful Newell-Fonda basketball games.

Survivors include her son, Roger Buffington of Fort Collins, CO; her daughter, Diane Gray of Santa Monica, CA; grandchildren: Martin Gray of Santa Monica, CA, Nicole Buffington of Boulder, CO, and Mark Buffington of Fort Collins, CO; her sister, Agnes and husband Art Barr of Newell, IA; nieces and nephews: Judy Anderson and Jan Worthan of Storm Lake, Iowa, John Gerken of Jefferson, IA, Keith Wilson of Tacoma, WA, Douglas Wilson of Brooklyn, NY, Bill Gemeiner of Omaha, NE, and Berklee Gemeiner of Belmond, IA; and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding LeVerne in death were her parents, her husband, her sisters Alma Wilson and Dorothy Gemeiner, infant brother and sister, Arthur and Edna Haahr, and many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins in the Haahr, Bodholdt and Grau families.

Ana Iris Henriquez

Ana Iris Henriquez, age 21, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Thursday, December 18, 2003 as the result of an automobile accident.

Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2003 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with Father Eriberto Da Costa officiating. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will begin at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, prior to the Mass, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Ana Iris Henriquez was born icon on October 8, 1982 to Gladis Chamul and Daniel Henriquez. She was baptized in 1985 in El Salvador. As a child, she lived in California, attending Langdon Elementary School. She later moved to Storm Lake.

Ana was a happy person who loved to have fun. She enjoyed dancing and tried to never miss a dance. She liked to be around people and always gave everyone a nickname.

Ana was a loving and devoted mother who cherished her children and her family and treasured the time she spent with them. She was loved by her family and will be missed daily.

Left to cherish her memory are her parents, Gladis Chamul and Daniel Henriquez; her son, Marvin Geovanny Barahona and her daughter, Jousy Adylene Henriquez Barahona; brothers: Adan Chamul and Herber Henriquez; sister Lorena Henriquez; and many other family members and friends.

Preceding Ana in death were her great-grandmother Julia Chamul, her step-father Ramiro Toribo, and her aunt Rosa del Carmen Holley.
