Darrell D. 'Andy' Anderson

Darrell D. 'Andy' Anderson, age 79, of Schaller, Iowa passed away March 5, 2003 following a lengthy illness.

Services will be held Saturday, March 8, 2003 at the United Methodist Church in Schaller at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery with military graveside honors by the Schaller V.F.W. Post #4704. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Darrell was born icon in Battle Creek, Iowa, August 8, 1923, to Glen W. and Alta Mae (Bradshaw) Anderson. He lived with his parents in Kiron as a young boy where he began attending grade school. His father’s job as a depot agent, meant the family moved to various communities in Northwest Iowa before settling in Schaller. He graduated from the Schaller High School with the class of 1940. He then went on to attend Berkley Junior College before being drafted into the Army. While in the Army, Andy joined the U.S. AirCorp, where he was a B-29 Tailgunner.

He married icon Marguerite Martin on December 29, 1946, at the United Methodist Church in Schaller. To this union, three children were born.

Andy and Marguerite moved to Kansas City shortly after they were wed, and while there he attended television maintenance school. Returning to Schaller in 1947, they opened Andy’s Café and owned and operated the restaurant for 42 years before retiring in October of 1988.

Darrell enjoyed reading, hunting, and was an occasional fisherman. He loved to play cards, enjoying the time he spent playing penny poker with his family.

He is survived by his wife Marguerite of Schaller; a son, Tim Anderson of Schaller; two daughters, Rita Brown and husband John of Kenyon, MN and Candace Dixon of Hutchinson, KS; seven grandchildren, Ian and Spencer Dixon, Mallory and Matthew Anderson, Shannon Pounds and husband Terry, and Kelsey and Erin Brown; one great grandchild, Brennan Pounds; an uncle Reed Bradshaw from Battle Creek, IA; many cousins and other extended family members and friends.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents.

Donna Cooley

Donna Cooley, age 68, of Storm Lake died Saturday, August 2, 2003, at her home.

Donna Bauer Cooley was born icon March 13, 1935 at rural Quimby, Iowa to Harry & Louise (Brickman) Bauer. As a child, Donna lived with her parents in the Quimby-Holstein area. In 1953, Donna graduated from Holstein High School. On April 1, 1954, Donna and Herbert C. Cooley were married icon in Sioux City, Iowa. This union was blessed with two children, one son, Charles Calvin, and one daughter, Cathy Ann.

Donna was a good cook and liked to bake. She was employed as a cook for many years at the Back Bar and at Christopher Jay’s until she retired because of declining health. Donna also did catering. Her specialties were breads and canneloni.

Family was important to Donna. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandchildren. She loved to go to their school activities and to watch them play in sports. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing Bingo and having coffee with her friends. Her door was always open for friends to call.

Donna is survived by her daughter, Cathy Ann Ordonez of Storm Lake; grandchildren Chad Cooley, Craig Cooley, Krystal Perez, Brianna Ordonez and Alex Ordonez; great-grandchildren Tyrone Cooley, Andrew and Austin Cooley, and Gabriela, David Lydia and Elena Perez; one brother Harry Bauer, Jr. of Holstein; and many other relatives and friends.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Herbert Cooley, one son, Charles Cooley, three grandchildren, her brother Les and her sister Ina.

David L. Johnson

David L. Johnson, age 52, of Lakeside, Iowa died on Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at St. Luke’s Regional Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Friday, November 21, 2003, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

David L. Johnson was born icon on April 15, 1951 to Howard and Shirley (Reinsel) Johnson at Williams, Iowa. He attended the Northeast Hamilton School, graduating from high school there with the Class of 1969.

On September 4, 1971 David was united in marriage to Amy Bourne at Webster City, Iowa.

He worked several years for the town of Williams, and then went to work for the Illinois Central-Canadian National Railroad, where he was a Road Master. In his spare time, David liked to keep busy, which earned him the nickname of “Project Man.” He was an avid NASCAR racing fan and loved to go fishing whenever he could.

David treasured the people in his life. To him, Family was Family, his Friends were Family, and the people he worked with were Family. He was loved by his Family and will be missed daily.

Survivors include his father, Howard Johnson of Williams; his wife, Amy of Lakeside, IA; his daughter Talitha Johnson of Altoona, PA; three brothers: Don Johnson of Williams, IA, Doug and wife Cindy Johnson of Alden, IA and Drew and wife Patti Johnson of Kings Island, GA; one sister: Dianne Johnson of Randall, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Preceding David in death were his mother and his infant daughter.

Delmar McGowan

Delmar McGowan, age 74, of Storm Lake died September 11, 2003 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City.

Delmar McGowan was born icon on June 7, 1929 to Urany and Elizabeth (Gerjets) McGowan at Alta, Iowa. He lived his childhood years on the farm northwest of Alta with his parents and family. He attended country school through grade school and graduated from Alta High School in 1946.

On October 13, 1949, Delmar married icon Betty Steward in Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with five children.

Delmar worked at Hy-Grade in Storm Lake for a number of years, and was a federal meat inspector at IBP for a time, then was superintendent of the Storm Lake Municipal Golf Course.

In his spare time, Delmar liked to play golf and cards, and enjoyed traveling and hunting, especially hunting for pheasants. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the New York Yankees.

Delmar was a loving husband, father and grandfather who cherished his family above all earthly interests. He will be forever missed.

Delmar McGowan is survived by his wife, Betty of Storm Lake, his son Terry and wife Ann McGowan of Urbandale, daughters Patricia and husband Dean Batt of Stamford, Nebraska, and Peggy and husband Mark Pottorff of Sergeant Bluff; grandchildren Loretta Batt of Huxley, Philip Batt of Orleans, Nebraska, DeAnna Ruskamp and husband Matt of Lincoln, Nebraska, Ashley Batt of Stamford, Nebraska and Justin, Michelle and Scott Pottorff of Sergeant Bluff; brothers Merlin and wife Delores McGowan, Donald McGowan and Garlan and wife Helen McGowan, all of Alta; sister Karen and husband Russ Gaskill of Alta; and many other relatives and friends.

Mr. McGowan was preceded in death by his parents, sons Gary Allen and Delmar Lee, Jr., his sister Deloris, and brothers Robert and Dennis.

Deborah D. Schall

Deborah D. Schall, age 54, of Storm Lake died Saturday, October 25, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake of complications of multiple sclerosis.

Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, October 30th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Storm Lake.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 29th after 3:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a Legion of Mary Rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a Parish Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial gifts be made to the St. Mary’s Alumni Association, PO Box 1106, Storm Lake, IA 50588.

Deborah Diane McCoy the daughter of Jesse Elwon McCoy and Dorothy Ann (McGarr) McCoy was born icon June 13, 1949 at Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Storm Lake with the class of 1967.

On June 29, 1985 she was united in marriage to James Anthony Schall in Storm Lake.

Deb was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she participated in the choirs and was a member of the St. Mary’s Alumni Association and St. Mary’s Boosters.

She is survived by her husband, James, her father and step-mother, Jesse and Millie McCoy of Fonda, her children, Jennifer Paulsen and her husband Chuck of Cedar Falls, IA, Christopher Cameron and his wife, Alison of Palmetto, FL, Jeremy Cameron and his wife, Jackie of Quantico, VA, Erin Schall of Dallas, TX, Rebecca Crass and her husband, Chad of Grafton, WI, grandchildren Meagan, Eathan, Kaitlyn and Aidan Cameron, Thomas Paulsen and Tyler Crass. Also surviving are a brother, Bill McCoy and his wife, Jackie of Norfolk, NE, three sisters, Kerry Noethe and her husband, Terry of Fonda, Susan Sippel of Clive, IA, Anne Smith and her husband, Jerry of Storm Lake, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Deb was preceded in death by her grandparents, her mother, Dorothy McGarr McCoy, twin granddaughters, Lucile and Lillith Paulsen and by her brother-in-law, Larry Sippel.

Darlene Woods

Darlene Woods, age 66, of Storm Lake died on Sunday, October 12, 2003 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Memorial services will be held Friday, October 17, 2003 at 10:30 a.m at McCord Manor in Storm Lake, with Reverend Connie Spitzack officiating. Burial will be held in the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Darlene Mae Lenhart was born icon on December 18, 1936 in Storm Lake, Iowa to Fay and Lillian (Moorhead) Lenhart. She spent her childhood years in her parents home and graduated from high school at Sulphur Springs Providence school in 1955.

On April 16, 1956, Darlene was united in marriage to Kenneth Ray Woods. They were blessed with a daughter, Cynthia.

Darlene spent most of her life as a homemaker. She cherished her family and friends and the time she spent with them. Her family and friends loved her and will miss her every day.

Darlene was a member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter 3000, in Storm Lake. She enjoyed playing Yahtzee with her friends and playing Bingo at the KC Hall and the Moose Lodge.

Darlene is survived by two brothers, Everett and wife Phyllis Lenhart of Hartley, and Leonard Lenhart; sisters Audrey Stern and friend, Harland of Babitt, MN, Doris and husband Manley Bratsch of New Ulm, MN, and Ruth Mumford of Sheldon, IA, and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Darlene in death were her father Fay on March 8, 1964, her mother Lillian on November 27, 1996, her husband Kenneth on June 22, 1988, her daughter Cynthia on November 3, 1978, five infant children, her twin brother Darrell Ray in 1938, and her sister Lauraine Hunziker on April 18, 1997.

Elaine Heard

Elaine Heard, age 78, of Storm Lake died Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at the Country View Nursing Home in Waterloo after a five-year battle with myeloma.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 6th at 2:00 p.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Beverlee Bell and Reverend Charles Downing officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial be given to the American Cancer Society with gifts designated for myeloma research.

Friends may call at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. where the family will be present. There will be an Order of Eastern Star Memorial Service at 7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Elaine was born icon June 21, 1925 in Hawarden, Iowa the daughter of Edward and Rosella (Frank) Jepson. She graduated from Storm Lake High School with the Class of 1942.

She worked for the Union Pacific/Milwaukee Railroad as a depot agent, for J. C. Penney Company, Buena Vista University, for the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce Office and in the office of IBP in Storm Lake.

She was united in marriage to Perry Heard on December 24, 1945 in Hawarden. The couple moved from Rembrandt to Storm Lake in 1951. He died on March 29, 1983.

Elaine was an active member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, PTA, Girl Scouts, Order of Eastern Star, Wa-Tan-Ye, ICCA and served as secretary for the Storm Lake Centennial Committee from 1971-1973.

She is survived by her daughter Kathryn E. Zimmer of Waterloo and numerous extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter Anne Louise Heard on November 3, 1999, by twin granddaughters on May 26, 1972 and by her sister, Lorna Sinkey.

Elwayne L. Madsen

Elwayne L. Madsen, age 68, of Schaller, Iowa passed away Thursday, May 29, 2003 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 31, 2003 at the United Methodist Church in Schaller, Iowa with Reverend Carol Gailey officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery. The funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Schaller.

Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, May 30, 2003 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller where the family will be present to greet friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Elwayne was born icon August 5, 1934 to Leroy and Elsie (Carstens) Madsen in Battle Township, Ida County, Iowa. He was baptized on December 19, 1937 in the Ida Grove Methodist Church. Elwayne graduated from Galva High School, Galva, Iowa in May 1953.

On January 16, 1954 he was united in marriage to Joan Jane Archer at Varina, Iowa. They became parents of one son, William Leroy. The couple started their home in Storm Lake, Iowa. Then moved to Battle Creek, Galva, and rural Ida Grove, Iowa where they farmed for 3 years. In October 1958, they moved to Schaller where Elwayne became employed by Central Popcorn Company. Later known as Consolidated Popcorn Co. for almost 30 years. He spent 8 years in Army National Guard-Ida Grove.

When he retired, he worked part-time as a Tender Truck driver for Rod's Fertilizer & Sales in Galva, Iowa.

He enjoyed spending time with his son and wife Susan and grandchildren Chris and Nicole.

Elwayne and Joan enjoyed dancing and traveling and making friends. He always took good care of his vehicles and enjoyed helping his son on the farm.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; son William and Susan, Galva, Iowa; grandson Christian and Jeni Madsen, Schaller, Iowa; granddaughter Nicole and Benjamin Huisinga, Jewell, Iowa; brothers-in-law and their wives: John and Esther Archer, Diboll, Texas, William and Betty Archer, Schaller, Iowa, and Lyle and Mary Archer, Council Bluffs, Iowa; and sister-in-law and her husband Jeanne and Ray Garrett, Denver, Colorado. Also surviving Elwayne are several nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends as well as a special aunt and uncle Sis and Al Madsen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Delores Vogler, nieces Nancy and Tina Vogler, nephew Richard Vogler, grandparents, parents-in-law, brothers-in-law Robert, Evans, Charles, Benjamin and Thomas Archer, and sister-in-law Alice Archer.

Elwayne will be missed by his family and many friends.

Everett F. Neppl

Everett F. Neppl, age 89, of Storm Lake died March 1, 2003 at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Storm Lake with the Reverend Douglas Klein officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Zion Catholic Cemetery in Fonda.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with a Legion of Mary Rosary at 3:30 p.m. and Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. The family will be present to greet friends from 6-8 p.m.

Everett was born icon in Carroll County, Iowa on January 21, 1914 to Henry and Lena (Pietig) Neppl. He lived with his parents on a farm in Willey, Iowa. Everett attended the parochial Catholic School in Carroll.

In 1938, Everett married icon Leota Otto at Mt. Carmel, Iowa. To this union, five children were born. They lived and farmed in Carroll County for 12 years and in the Fonda area for over 30 years. Everett loved farming and family and playing cards with his many friends. After retiring in 1980, he and Leota moved to Storm Lake. They enjoyed traveling until Everett’s health declined.

Everett was baptized and confirmed in the Willey Catholic Church in Willey, Iowa. He was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda where he was an active KC member. He later became a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Leota of Storm Lake; sons: James Neppl and wife Diane of Rock Island, Illinois, and Roger Neppl and wife Jennifer of Evergreen, Colorado; daughters: Kay Sterbick of Des Moines, and Diane Baskerville and husband Roger of Washington, Kansas; brothers: Leo Neppl and wife Dorothy of Iowa City, Don Neppl and wife Mildred of Sarasota, Florida, and Earl Neppl of Gardendale, Alabama; sister, Lois Grote and husband Elmer of Breda; sixteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and other extended family and friends.

Preceding Everett in death are his parents; son, Gary Neppl; and siblings: Wilbur, Elmer, Helen Sanders, Gene, Arthur, and Myron.

Arthur R. Pender

Arthur R. Pender, age 87, of Schaller, Iowa died Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Memorial Services will be Saturday, November 13, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Schaller with Reverend Carol Gailey officiating. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be on the same day as the memorial service, at the church, from 12:00 until service time.

Art was born icon October 7, 1917 to Jess and Sallie (Bateman) Pender in Bedford, Indiana. He was baptized in the Methodist religion in Lawrence County, Indiana. Art grew up in Indiana and attended the Schaswick Township School.

On January 7, 1940, Art was united in marriage to Marjorie J. Brisbois in South Dakota. They were blessed with three sons: Robert, Lloyd and Tom. Art was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather who enjoyed every moment he spent with his family. Art liked to spend his spare time playing golf and cards, doing wordbook puzzles, traveling and gardening.

Those left to cherish Art’s memory include his wife of nearly 65 years, Marge, of Schaller; his sons: Robert and wife Karen Pender of Alta, Iowa, Lloyd and wife Lynn Pender of Saginaw, Michigan, and Tom and wife Sharon Pender of Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren: Traci DeWitt of Bailey, Colorado, Toni and Lewis Castor of Davenport, Iowa; Jennifer and Paul Van Steenhuyse of Bettendorf, Iowa, Brian and Nancy Pender of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Dave Pender of Saginaw, Michigan, Kevin and Carol Pender of Saginaw, Michigan, Craig and Lorie Pender of Detroit, Michigan, Sallie and Rob Campbell of Alta, Iowa and Shane Pender of Kansas City, Missouri; step-grandchildren: Ron and Brian Underwood and Janelle, Emily and Jake Tucker; great-grandchildren: Samantha and Derek Pender, Tristin and Ashley Pender, Kyle and Alison Pender, Jadeyn Pender, Taylor Campbell and Curtis Castor; several step-great-grandchildren, as well as other extended family members and a host of friends.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary; and four brothers: Kenneth, William, Merrill and Jess, Jr.

Billy Dettmann

Billy Lee Dettmann, age 72, of Newell, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2004, at the University Hospital in Iowa City.

Billy was born icon on November 27, 1931, in Yetter, Iowa, the son of Wilbert C. and Edna (Ringgenberg) Dettmann. He attended country school and graduated from Lake City High School in 1950.

On May 11, 1951, Billy and Maxine Lorraine Kent were united in marriage at Auburn, Iowa. They were blessed with two sons: Kevin and Collin.

He worked for a farmer for a while before moving to Lytton in 1954. He worked as a milk route salesman for the Lytton Maid Creamery, and tank wagon delivery for Standard Oil. Billy was a volunteer in the Lytton Fire Department and a member of the Lytton Presbyterian Church. In 1965 they moved to Newell where he continued the tank wagon delivery and opened his own Standard Oil Agency and then worked as a jobber retiring in April of 1990. He continued being active in the Newell community as a volunteer fireman, served on the school board, school bus driver, and transferred his church membership to the United Methodist Church in Newell.

Bill cherished the time spent with his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He had special memories of driving stock cars and flying in his younger years, enjoyed bird watching, gardening, fishing, woodworking, and decorating his yard for the holidays.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Maxine; sons: Kevin Dettmann and wife Mary of Eau Claire, WI, and Collin Dettmann of Ames, IA; grandson Nolan Dettmann; sister Dee Ahern of Stuart, FL; sister-in-law, Esther Dettmann of Sac City; brother-in-law, Duane Kent and his wife Lucille of Aurelia; extended family members and many friends.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Daryl Dettmann.

Memorial services for Billy will be held Sunday, November 14th, 1:30 p.m., at the United Methodist Church in Newell with Reverend David Schumann officiating. Dennis Hinrichs will sing and Cheryl Baughman will accompany him. Honorary casketbearers will include: Dick Larsen, George Brighton, Donald Olsen, Mac Fagan, Gerald Kreft, Ronald Dettmann, and Otis Schultz (1927-2000). Final resting place is Oaklawn Cemetery in Auburn.

Visitation will be Saturday, November 13th, 6:00-8:00 pm, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Betty Forbes

Betty Forbes, age 78, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 20, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Private family burial at the Storm Lake Cemetery will be held prior to the memorial service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Friday, November 19, 2004 anytime after 4:00 p.m., where the family will greet friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Those who wish to send condolences may do so online.

Betty Louise Wilson was born icon October 23, 1926 to Eva and Jesse Wilson near Lanesboro, Iowa. She was baptized in the Methodist Church in Lanesboro. Betty attended elementary school in Lanesboro and graduated from high school there. She then went on to attend Buena Vista College in Storm Lake for three years.

On June 15, 1947, Betty was united in holy matrimony with Wayne J. Forbes in Lanesboro. Their union was blessed with two daughters: Rebecca and Barbara.

Betty was a loving wife and devoted mother to her daughters. She treasured her family and the time she spent with them. In addition to making a warm and comfortable home for her family, Betty worked for a time as church secretary. She was a charter member of Wa-Tan-Ye, a member of P.E.O., volunteered to route deliveries for Meals on Wheels, and was a Girl Scout Leader, as well as a faithful member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of over 57 years, Wayne Forbes of Storm Lake; her daughters Rebecca Potere of Sarasota, Florida and Barbara J. Bell of Fort Myers, Florida; a grandson, Tony Potere of Sarasota, Florida; a brother, Jerry Wilson of Carroll, Iowa; as well as other extended family members and a host of friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents.

Mildred M. Nielsen

Mildred M. Nielsen, age 95, of Newell, Iowa, died Thursday, March 31, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be Sunday, April 3, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, with Reverend Paul Johnston officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no visitation.

Mildred was born icon July 26, 1909 in Blair County, Altoona, Pennsylvania to George Bulick and Carrie Deter Bulick. She and a younger sister were orphaned by the time she had reached the age of 9 years. Little is known of her early childhood.

Mildred came to Storm Lake in Buena Vista County in 1925 and joined the Storm Lake Baptist Church in 1927. The following year in May of 1928, Mildred graduated from Storm Lake High School.

On May 3, 1930, she was united in marriage to Victor Nielsen at the Danish Lutheran Church parsonage at Hampton, Iowa.

They lived in the Newell area, becoming residents there for the remainder of their lives.

There were three sons born icon to this union: Jacob Glenn Nielsen, Kenneth LeRoy Nielsen and Neal Charles Nielsen.

Mildred was a good cook and liked to bake. There were always cookies in the cookie jar for the grandkids and for anyone that dropped by for coffee. If the cookie jar was empty and they just couldn’t wait, Grandma and the kids baked some together. Ingredients were always on hand, otherwise Grandpa was sent to the store.

Over the years, Mildred collected recipes and tried a lot of new ones on her family. If they didn’t like it, she would put a big “NO” or “UGH” beside the recipe. She loved to crochet and I’d bet that her family members have more afghans in their closets than the average person. She was always looking for a new pattern to try. Flowers and plants were another enjoyment of Mildred’s, she had a rose bush that she especially enjoyed.

Visiting with her family and friends was an important part of Mildred’s day. Consequently, she was a big fan of the CB Radio, whose handle was “Minnie’s Fish House.”

Mildred was preceded in death by her father and mother, sister, husband Victor, son Neal and daughter-in-law Kay (Bell) Nielsen.

Left to cherish her memory are sons: Jacob G. Nielsen of Newell, Iowa and Kenneth L. Nielsen and his wife Joyce (McCullough) Nielsen of Blockton, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Mickey (Neagle) Morrow of Newell, Iowa; twelve grandchildren: Tom Nielsen of Newell, Iowa, Joyce (Lussman) Nielsen of Storm Lake, Iowa, Mike Nielsen and wife Dellene (Chiles) Nielsen of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Mariane Nielsen of Sutherland, Iowa, Dan Nielsen and wife Lonna (Halverson) Nielsen of Winterset, Iowa, Sharon Nielsen of Storm Lake, Iowa, Mark Nielsen and wife Melissa “Meg” (Meusburger) Nielsen of Truesdale, Iowa, Lori (Nielsen) Hunt and husband Randy Hunt of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Kevin Nielsen and wife Kris (Ridiout) Nielsen of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Kelly (Nielsen) Scott and husband Robert Scott of Davenport, Linda (Nielsen) Buckendahl of Rembrandt, Iowa, Larry Nielsen and wife Candi (Weaver) Nielsen of Newell, Iowa, Lisa (Nielsen) Kraft and husband Tony Kraft of Fonda, Iowa; 27 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews as well as other family members and friends.

Josephine Rathke

Josephine Rathke, age 93, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, April 11, 2005 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, April 16, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Mary in Storm Lake, with Father Matt Hewitt officiating. Burial will be St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2005, where a Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 3:30 pm and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:00 pm.

Josephine Elizabeth Speltz was born icon May 9, 1911 in Rollingstone, Minnesota, the daughter of Jerome and Aline (Guidinger) Speltz. She was baptized as an infant in the Roman Catholic faith at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Rollingstone, and later confirmed in the same church. Josephine received her primary education at Holy Trinity, from grade school through high school, graduating in 1928. She continued her education at Winona State University, where she graduated cum laude one year early, receiving a bachelor’s degree in both Math and French. Jo’s many youthful adventures included hunting rattlesnakes in Minnesota, co-piloting an airplane in the early 30’s, and teaching seven grades in a one-room schoolhouse. Although she spoke only Luxemburger until the age of six years, Jo later learned English, German, French, Latin and Spanish and became an avid word jumbler into her nineties.

In November of 1935, Jo was united in holy matrimony with Albert William “Mike” Rathke in Rollingstone, Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with eleven children: Mary Jo, Josephine, Elizabeth, Michael, John, Jerome, James, Jane, Jean, Catherine and Sara. Jo was a devoted wife and mother. She and Mike enjoyed the busy life that accompanies a large family. In the years in which they were rearing and educating their children, there was a 20-year span of time during which they had from one to eight children attending college or graduate school: Mary Jo holds a B.A. and M.A. in English from Stout State University in Wisconsin and was a former chairperson of the English department there; Josephine has a B.A. in English from New Haven University and worked at the Pentagon; Elizabeth holds three degrees from Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, as well as an R.N. degree form Mt. Mercy School of Nursing and is a successful business woman and mother currently; Michael has a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Purdue University and is currently Professor of Chemistry at Michigan State University in Lansing; Retired Army Major John received his B.S. degree at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa and his Masters degree from Arizona State University in Tempe; Jerome has a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Indiana University in Bloominton, a year of post-doctoral work at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and currently works for the Department of Energy Commission at the Argonne National Laboratory; James received his M.D. at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and currently is retired from the medical profession and a successful farmer and environmentalist in the Fort Dodge, Iowa area; Jane received her degree from Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, studied Spanish at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico and at the University in Soria, Spain—she received her Masters in Australia where she currently is teaching; Jean received her B.A. degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, holds a B.S. degree in Occupational Therapy and has an associate degree in nursing—she currently works as an Occupational Therapist; Catherine holds B.A. and B.S. degrees from Iowa State University in Ames in English and Bio-Chemistry and currently works in Information Technology at the College of DuPage in Illinois; Sara has a B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls and currently operates a daycare business from her home in Osage.

Jo was active in her community, serving as a past treasurer for the City Beautiful’s Toast Mistress Club, and was nominated for Iowa Mother of the Year by this organization in 1975. She was a member of the Buena Vista County Hospital Auxiliary, Witter Gallery Guild and the Hook and Needle Club. She also volunteered at Faith, Hope and Charity for two years. She is a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, where she was a past member of St. Mary’s Guild and a past auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary.

Jo and Mike have traveled extensively to Europe, Mexico and Australia. They enjoyed participating in church activities together. Jo liked to crochet and do needle point projects; all of her children have pillow cases that she embroidered.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Mary Jo Rathke of Menomonee, Wisconsin; Josephine (Jack) Marinelli of Storm Lake, Iowa; Elizabeth (Bill) Svensen of Aberdeen, South Dakota; Dr. Michael (Eileen) Rathke of East Lansing, Michigan; Retired Major John (Rosemarye) Rathke of Copperas Cove, Texas; Dr. Jerome (Barbara) Rathke of Homer Glen, Illinois; Dr. James (Bette) Rathke of Stratford, Iowa; Jane Rathke of Oatley, New South Wales, Australia; Jean Rathke of West Memphis, Arkansas; Catherine Rathke (Gilberto) of Plainfield, Illinois; and Sara (Charles) Heiderscheit of Osage, Iowa; brothers Jerome (Loraine) Speltz of Charles City, Minnesota; sister Betty (Pat) O’Grady of Rochester, Minnesota; grandchildren: Matthew Svensen, Jessica Marinelli Battaglia, Jennifer Marinelli, Diana Rathke Wolf, Deborah Rathke Jenness, Daniel Rathke, Michael Rathke, Dennis Rathke, Anne Rathke Kohring, Benjamin Rathke, Joseph Rathke, Alan Perez-Rathke, and Samuel Rathke; great-grandchildren: William, Katie and Amanda Svensen, Owen and Jack Battaglia, Taylor Rathke, Jackson and Lily Okan, Cassidy and Mason Rathke, Caitlin and Matthew Jenness, Gavin, Gabriella, Josephina, and Isabella Rathke, Kasey Kohring, Stephanie and Matthew Santor, Jessica and Zachary Rathke, and Carolyn Rathke; and many other relatives and a host of friends.

Preceding Jo in death were her husband, A.W. “Mike” Rathke; brother and sister-in-law Thomas and Bernita Speltz; and brother Sylvester Speltz; and grandchildren Martin Svensen, David Rathke, and Jennifer Rathke.

Bounnong Phouangphet

Bounnong Phouangphet, age 55, of Storm Lake died Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Traditional Buddhist rites will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Bounnong Phouangphet was born icon in Laos on July 9, 1948 to Koune and Soutta Synarong. She was married icon in 1979 to Kosonh Phouangphet in Thailand. She was a homemaker who was willing to help anyone in need. She helped raise her younger brother and sisters. Bounnong was an avid gardener.

She is survived by her husband, Kosonh of Storm Lake; daughter: Thanome Sim; son: James Phouangphet; brothers: Bounruong Synarong, Sompong Synarong, Bounthong Synarong, Boonkhout Synarong and La Thabone Synarong; sisters Kongmany Synarong, Manivone Synarong, Oraxone Synarong and Keoninh Phoutsaphone; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, mother and one brother.

Maesel Sweet

Maesel Sweet, age 95, of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away on Friday, February 13, 2004 at the Boswell Memorial Hospital in Sun City, AZ.

Maesel Anderson Sweet, daughter of Ed and Laura Anderson was born icon on November 8, 1908 in Pierre, SD. She attended grade school and graduated from the High View School in 1926. In high school she enjoyed playing basketball. After graduation, she drove a school bus with a team of horses for High View for a short time.

Maesel married icon Karl E. Sweet on September 16, 1931. They were blessed with a daughter, Darlene. Maesel and Karl lived on the home farm for most of their seventy-two years of marriage. She enjoyed baking rolls, cooking, canning fruits and vegetables and mowing their beautiful yard. She loved all her pets, especially her St. Bernard, Prince.

Maesel was a member of the Methodist Church in Truesdale and following the closing of the church, joined the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. She was a Sunday School teacher, taught Bible School, was involved with the ladies’ UMW of the church, was a member of the Birthday Club, Truesdale Farmers Club and was also on the funeral committee of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Karl; a daughter, Darlene and her husband Ron Cradit of Mound, MN; a sister, Ruth Johnson; seven nieces and three nephews; many extended family members, friends and a special friend, Lupe Hernandez, her personal nurse.

Preceding Maesel in death were her parents, Ed and Laura Anderson, her twin sister, Mavis Pederson, and a brother, Nathan Anderson.
