Frances F. Perley
Frances Florence Perley, 84, of Yucaipa, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died March 9, 1997, at her residence, due to cancer.

Services and burial were private. Neptune Society of Riverside, Calif. handled arrangements.

Ms. Perley was born in Persia, Iowa. She lived in Sioux City from 1937 to 1955. She lived in Yucaipa for 25 years, and was a homemaker.

She was a member of Easter Star for over 50 years, a member of the United Methodist Church of Yucaipa, where she served a president of the Jolly Mixers Sunday School Class, and was active in the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Women's Club of Yucaipa.

Survivors include a son, Thomas F. of Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Patricia A. Hopkins of Colton, Calif.; a brother, Thomas Caverly of Dallas, Texas; two sisters, Grace Stagg and Dorothy Jackson, both of Seattle, Wash.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Marguerite Rutstein
Marguerite Luella (O'Brien) Rutstein, 84, formerly of Sioux City, died March 1, 1997, at Richardson, Texas.

Private graveside services were March 14, 1997, at County Corners Cemtery in Lamont, Iowa.

Mrs. Rutstein was born Oct. 22, 1912, at Lamont to William and Luella (Wilder) O'Brien. She grew up in Lamont and graduated from Lamont High School in 1930. She married Hyman Rutstein in 1938, at Des Moines, Iowa. The couple settled in Sioux City. She was the deputy of the bookkeeping division of the Child Support and Alimony Department of the Woodbury County District Court in Sioux City from 1959 to 1974. She resided in Sioux City from 1938 to 1992, when she moved to New Smyrna Beach, Fla. In November of 1992, she moved to Richardson, where she remained in a nursing home until her death.

Survivors include ten nieces and nephews, La Rue Owen, Bill Hill, Bruce Tarbox, Claude O'Brien, Tom (Fr. K.T.) Holland, Gloria Price, Sharon Hall, Mike and Donna Mahoney, and Darlene O'Brien; and a great aunt, Ethel Wilder.

She was preceded in death by her husband in June of 1973; and twelve brothers and sisters, William Jr., Vette Tarbox, Claude, Ula Hill, Una Holland, Fred, Donnel, Dorothy Hancock, Jim (F. Duane) and Jack (C. John), Mabel, and a baby boy.

Leon N. Cunningham, 79, Sioux City, died Saturday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Grace Bos
ELLSWORTH, Minn. - Grace Bos, 99, of Ellsworth died Friday at Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Ellsworth.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Bethel Reformed Church in Ellsworth. Burial will be in the Bethel Reformed Church Cemetery in Ellsworth. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Roland Chapman
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - Roland Chapman, 64, of Spirit Lake died Wednesday at Carlsbad, N.M.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spirit Lake. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery at Remsen. A Scripture service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake.

Alfred I. Haukland
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Alfred "Al" Ingvol Haukland, 84, of Altadena, Calif., formerly of Storm Lake, died Thursday, March 27, 1997, at his residence following a heart attack.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Swinton officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be after noon Tuesday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Mr. Haukland was born March 30, 1912, at Desoto, Wis., to Christian and Caroline (Thompson) Haukland. He graduated from Long Prairie High School in Long Prairie, Minn. He was an accountant for Skelly Oil Company and operated Al's Skelly in Storm Lake for nine years. He then worked for Larson Oil Company, then was the office manager and accountant for Trans Agra of Storm Lake for 11 years before retiring. He married Mable B. Martinson Feb. 18, 1936, at Eagle Bend, Minn. She died Jan. 4, 1992. He moved to Danville, Calif. in 1995. He married Shirley Watkins June 1, 1996, at Altadena.

He was an active member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, past secretary of Jewel Lodge 309 A.F. & A.M., and belonged to the Golden "K" Kiwanis.

Survivors include his wife of Altadena; a daughter and her husband, Janet Mae and Donald Wilde of Marble Falls, Texas; two sons and their wives, Dale and Joanne of Danville, Calif., and Robert and Charlotte of Cross Lake, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ella.

A memorial fund has been established.

Marlene M. Kurth
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Marlene M. Kurth, 61, of Ida Grove died Friday, March 28, 1997, at the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove, following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, with the Rev. Gerald Fisch officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Ida Grove. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with a Scripture services at 8 p.m., at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.

Mrs. Kurth was born Jan. 11, 1936, at Le Mars, Iowa, to Joseph and Leona (Gehrens) Schreier. She grew up in the Le Mars area, graduating from Le Mars High School in 1953. She married Gerald Kurth Feb. 4, 1961, at Le Mars. The couple moved to Ida Grove in 1964. She was employed at J.C. Penney's for 12 years, and then worked as a seamstress for Marilyn's Designer Originals.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, the American Legion Auxilary, Altar Society, and Horn Memorial Auxilary.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Kelly and Scott Keiter of Hartington, Neb., and Lisa and Steve Hartman of Dunlap, Iowa; two sons, Barry and his fiancee, Janet Higgins of Dallas, Texas, and Brian and his wife Kay of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Lauren and Kate Hartman, Patrick and Kayte Kurth, and Nicole Keiter; a brother and his wife, Vernon and Neva Schreier of Palm Desert, Calif.; and two sisters and their husbands, JoAnn and Vernon Reistoffer of Granville, Iowa, and Mary Lou and Ray Reistoffer of Remsen, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 12, 1996 and her parents.

A memorial fund has been established in her name.

George R. Mount
LE MARS, Iowa - George R. Mount, 82, of Le Mars died Friday at his residence.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Le Mars. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars.

Fern J. Phillips
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Fern J. Phillips, 89, of Ida Grove died Friday, March 28, 1997, at Manning General Hospital, in Manning, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, with the Rev. Gerald M. Fisch officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery at Ida Grove. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m., at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.

Mrs. Phillips was born July 9, 1907, at Ida Grove to Eva Hamann. She grew up and received her education in Ida Grove, graduating from Ida Grove High School in 1927. She married Gilbert R. Phillips July 24, 1929, at Ida Grove. The couple would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this July. She was employed by J.C. Penney Department Store for 20 years, retiring in 1962. For the past three years, she made her home at Manning Plaza in Manning. She loved to crochet.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove.

Survivors include her husband of Manning; a son and his wife, Gilbert T. and Joan of Manning; a daughter, Greta Tollas of Urbandale, Iowa; four grandchildren, Gail Kotval, Diane Jones, and Michael and Steven Phillips; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Opal Fritz of Denison, Iowa; two brothers-in-law, James of Ida Grove, and Harvey Lafrentz of Mapleton, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Cecilia Hamann of Ida Grove, and Etta Hamann of Holstein; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Bond and Ethel Lafrentz; and two brothers, Roy and Bernard Hamann.

A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Delos V. Schumacher
REMSEN, Iowa - Delos Vahn Schumacher, 47, of Remsen died unexpectedly Friday, March 28, 1997, in the Chamberlain - Fort Thompson, S.D., area.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Robert L. Eggers and the Rev. Erland Asmus officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery at Westside, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. There will also be a memorial service at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Remsen-Union High School. Moeller Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schumacher was born March 4, 1950, at Denison, Iowa, to Vahn and Leva (Wessel) Schumacher. He spent his childhood at Battle Creek, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1968. He attended Buena Vista College at Storm Lake, Iowa, from 1968 to 1972, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in physical education and business education. He attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion, S.D., from 1977 to 1980, receiving a master of science degree in physical education and athletic administration. He attended Drake University at Des Moines, Iowa, from 1990 to 1991, receiving his principal's certification. He again attended Drake from 1993 to 1996, receiving a title as Educational Specialist. He married Jeane Jensen Dec. 22, 1973, at Arcadia, Iowa.

He had been the principal at Remsen-Union High School since 1992. Prior to moving to Remsen, he was the athletic director and head football coach at Southern Cal at Lake City, Iowa. From 1972 to 1979, he was the football coach and physical education instructor at Ar-We-Va High School at Westside.

In 1990, he was named High School Football Coach of the Year by the Des Moines Register, after leading the Southern Cal High School football team to the 1A State Championship.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, and was a church elder from 1993 to 1996. He was also a member of the following associations: Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, National Association of Secondary Principals, School Administrators of Iowa, Advisor to the Iowa Administrators of Special Education Network, AEA 12 School-to-Work Advisory Council, Iowa Athletic Directors Association, and an area nominee to the Governor's Workforce Development Council.

Survivors include his wife of Remsen; two sons, Nick at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, and Chad at home; his parents of Battle Creek; two brothers and their wives, Brian and Nancy of Ida Grove, Iowa, and Darrell and Deb of Spencer, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by a son, Bradley.

Arthur Trei
GEORGE, Iowa - Arthur Trei, 78, of George died Saturday at the V.A. Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Zoar Presbyterian Church, rural George. Burial will be in the Zoar Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present at 7 p.m., at the Bolin Funeral Home in George.

David L. Veit
ODEBOLT, Iowa - David L. Veit, 83, of Odebolt died Saturday at the Colonial Manor in Odebolt.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt. Burial will be in the Odebolt Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, with a rosary at 7 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m., all at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Odebolt.

Catherine Alvarez
Catherine P. Alvarez, 79, of South Sioux City died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital.

A memorial Mass will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City. The body was cremated and burial of the ashes will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. Larkin Northside Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bernice A. Banys
Bernice A. Banys, 65, of Sioux City died Thursday, April 10, 1997, at her residence, following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Casimir Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul-Louis Arts officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m., a rosary by the Rosary Society at 6:30 p.m., and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Banys was born August 11, 1931, at Sioux City to Paul and Venia (Hahn) Thom. She grew up in Sioux City and attended Sioux City schools. She married Joseph P. Banys August 12, 1948, at Sioux City. She was an Avon representative for several years, earning awards for being a top sales representative. She later worked for Sunshine and Super Value Food Stores for about 10 years, retiring due to ill health.

She was a member of the Sioux City Police Officers Auxillary, St. Casimir Catholic Church, and the Rosary Society. She was also a member of TOPS and was active in the PTA.

Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Steve and Christi of Sioux City; six daughters, Gail and her husband Dave McWilliams, Linda Simons, Kathy Kroger, Laurie and her husband Dan Gettner, Jeannie and her husband Rick Mathiason, Joannie and her husband Rick Mogensen, all of Sioux City; two brothers, Frank Shults and Gary Brown, both of Sioux City; a sister, Janet Reiling of Pompano Beach, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ilo L. Dutler
Ilo L. Dutler, 74, of Sioux City died Thursday, April 10, 1997, at a local hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul-Louis Arts officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., all at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Mr. Dutler was born April 16, 1922, in Guthrie County, Iowa, to August and Margaret (Eagen) Dutler. He married Mary Jean Krogman August 5, 1952, at Aston, Iowa. He was employed as district supervisor with Gulf Oil Company for 25 years, retiring in 1974.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Pacific Theatre.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Jim and Jane of Sioux City; two grandsons, Andrew and Michael; a brother and his wife, Roy and Gladys of Guthrie Center, Iowa; two sisters, Lois Waggoner, and Lowene and her husband Frank Koppold, all of Des Moines, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Earl and Wayne.

Edna Holt
Edna Holt, 92, of Sioux City died Thursday, April 10, 1997, at Matney Westside Manor.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. E.D. Pappadackis of the Third Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Holt was born May 31, 1904, at Ponca, Neb., to Jesse and Alice (Beith) Teller. At an early age, she moved with her family to the McCook Lake, S.D., area, then into Sioux City in 1920. She married Ned W. Holt Dec. 25, 1927, at Sioux City. The couple moved to South Sioux City in 1972. He died March 31, 1988, at Sioux City. She had worked for Palmer Candy Co. and Johnson Bisquet for over 15 years.

She was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a brother, Lawrence Teller of Medford, Ore.; two sisters, Dora and her husband George Smith of Sioux City, and Ora Lirwin of McCook Lake; a sister-in-law, Darlene Teller of Des Moines, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
