Marie J. De Jong
MAURICE, Iowa - Marie J. De Jong, 86, of Riverside, Calif., formerly of Maurice and Bronson, Iowa, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in Riverside.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at New Life Community Church in Artesia, Calif.

Mrs. De Jong was born in Chicago.

She married Richard De Jong. The couple moved to Maurice in 1930. They owned and operated the Maurice Truck Service and then the Maurice Cafe. They moved to Bronson, where they operated the Bronson Feed and Hardware from 1947 to 1949.

In 1956, they moved to Artesia, where she drove a school bus for the ABC Unified School District until retiring in 1977. He died in 1981.

She entered the Artesia Christian Home in 1981, then the Villa DeAnza Retirement Home in Riverside.

Survivors include a son, Richard Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Norma Jean Leichtweis of Anaheim, Calif. and Betty Ann Folsom of Riverside; two sisters, Ann Stewart of Las Vegas, Nev., and Bernice Sgobba of Joliet, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to the Americam Heart Association.

Robert P. Reilly
AURELIA, Iowa - Robert Payne "Bob" Reilly, 77, of Aurelia died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in Mesa, Ariz.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, Iowa, with the Rev. Timothy Schott officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Aurelia. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with a parish wake service at 8 p.m., at the Wharton-Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia.

Mr. Reilly was born May 31, 1920, in Sioux City, the son of John and Lillie (Sargisson) Reilly. He attended school in Cherokee, and graduated from Aurelia High School in 1939.

He was employed as a truck driver for Herbert Will and with the Sioux City Stockyards.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot during World War II.

He married Marian Will on Sept. 5, 1942, in South Sioux City. Following his discharge, he returned to work at the Sioux City Stockyards. The couple moved to Aurelia in 1950 to farm. He owned and operated Reilly Cattle Company and later sold Garst Seed Corn.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Aurelia Golf Course, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was president of the Maple Valley Insurance Company. He enjoyed dancing.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Robert Kelch of Peoria, Ill.; two sons and their wives, Dennis and Penny of Baxter, Iowa, and Larry and Shanda of Aurelia; eight grandchildren, Susan Griffin, Sarah Holles and Benjamin, Stephanie, Robbie, Tadd, Kasey and Kalli Reilly; four sisters, Charlotte Eisenmenger of Cherokee, Helen and her husband, Marvin Rasmussen, of Hubbard, Neb., Bernice Nettleton and JoAnn Swoboda, both of Sioux City; his mother-in-law, Gladys Will of Aurelia; a brother-in-law and his wife, Dean and Eveline Will of Aurelia; a sister-in-law and her husband, Joann and George Pithan of Kimberling City, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Herbert Will.

A memorial fund has been established.

Gladys M. Bettin
ONAWA, Iowa - Gladys Marie Bettin, 90, of Onawa died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Donald R. Ludwick officiating. Burial will be in Climbing Hill (Iowa) Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Bettin was born Jan. 23, 1908, in Sioux City, the daughter of Lafe and Luella (Linis) Pittman. She graduated from Holly Springs (Iowa) High School and entered the Lutheran School of Nursing in Sioux City, graduating in 1931.

She was employed as a registered nurse with Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City, the Onawa Hospital and Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.

She married Melvin A. Bettin on Sept. 23, 1935, in Sloan, Iowa. The couple lived in the Hornick, Holly Springs and Sloan area until moving to Onawa in 1948. He died Jan. 18, 1994, in Onawa.

She entered Elmwood Care Centre in June 1990.

She was a member of First Christian Church, the Ladies Circle III and the Alumni Association of the Lutheran School of Nursing. She enjoyed raising roses.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Marlan and Pat of Onawa; two grandchildren, Charles S. Bettin and Catherine R. Mack; three great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Glen and Ruby Pittman of Onawa; two sisters, Opal McRae and Bernice Lamb, both of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carol Ann; and two sisters, Aurilla Holverson and Addie Pittman.

Michael J. Donahue
LE MARS, Iowa - Michael James Donahue, 59, of Le Mars, formerly of Sioux Falls, S.D., died Wednesday at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

Evelyn M. Perrin
MAPLETON, Iowa - Evelyn May Perrin, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton, with the Rev. Linda Boggs officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery at Castana, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mrs. Perrin was born Dec. 18, 1911, in Spirit Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Van and Edith (Webb) Kidd. She graduated from high school and received her teaching certificate from Iowa State University.

She married Ned Perrin on June 17, 1933, in Spirit Lake. The couple lived in the Mapleton area, where she taught school. In 1980, they moved into Mapleton.

She was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, the Women's Fellowship, the Castana Thursday Club, the P.E.O. Chapter FQ and the Delta Delta Delta Sorority and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.She served as the educational chairman for the Monona County American Cancer Society. She was a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher and an organist at St. Peter's. She enjoyed knitting, crossword puzzles and baking bread.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Dr. Richard of Lincoln, Neb.; a daughter and her husband, DiAnn and Lyle Rose of Mapleton; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Vorus.

Memorials may be given to the Fisher-Whiting Library in Mapleton.

Sylvia Sangwin
AURELIA, Iowa - Sylvia Sangwin, 90, of Aurelia died Wednesday at Sunset Knoll Retirement Home in Aurelia.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with a family prayer service at 1:15 p.m., at Congregational United Church of Christ in Aurelia. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery at rural Meriden, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa.

Meredith Johnson
WISNER, Neb. - Meredith Lundstrom "Swede" Johnson, 82, of Wisner died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point, Neb.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church in Wisner, with the Rev. Alan Baglien officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Concord (Neb.) Cemetery.

Mr. Johnson was born Sept. 17, 1915, in Laurel, Neb., the son of Carl and Sadie (Lundstrom) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended Concord Public Schools.

He married Helen Ediger on June 6, 1959, in Spencer, S.D.

He owned and operated Johnson Trucking in Concord. In 1972, the couple moved to Wisner, where he was employed with Cruse Trucking for 14 years.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and the Wisner Senior Center. He served as mayor of Concord and was a volunteer on the Concord Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Dean and Kathi of Valparaiso, Neb.; a daughter and her husband, Jane and Gayle Broekemeier of Howells, Neb.; five grandchildren, Justin Hauschild, Alysha and Caitlyn Johnson and Emily and Laura Broekemeier; and a sister and her husband, Anita and Jake Vanderheiden of Laurel.

John Langstraat
SIBLEY, Iowa - John Langstraat, 77, of Sibley died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Reformed Church in Sibley, with the Rev. Gary Van Heukelom, the Rev. Brad Langstraat and the Rev. Kim Skattum officiating. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Walton, Roste and Vogel Funeral Home in Sibley.

Mr. Langstraat was born Oct. 31, 1920, near Newkirk, Iowa, the son of William and Jennie (Van Meeteren) Langstraat. He was raised near Newkirk and attended country school.

He farmed with his father until 1945, when he began farming on his own.

He married Henrietta Mastbergen in December 1946, in Archer, Iowa. In 1955, the couple moved to their farm near Sibley. She died July 16, 1970.

He married Ida Mouw-Thompson on June 2, 1972, in Sioux Falls.

He was employed with Farmers Mutual Insurance in Sibley, then returned to farming. He retired in 1993. They moved into Sibley in October 1996.

He was a member of First Reformed Church, where he taught Sunday School, was a past deacon and an elder. He served on the board of directors for Hope Haven and Bigelow United Co-op Elevator. He was a trustee for Viola Township.

They did volunteer mission work in the southern United States and Mexico. He enjoyed singing with the Senior Saints.

Survivors include his wife; four sons and their wives, Warren and Mary Louise of Wassenaar, Netherlands, Arnie and Diane of Sibley, Harlan and Dorothy of Eagan, Minn., and Vern and Joey of Louisville, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Judy Witcher of Denver, Colo.; a stepson, Greg Thompson of Le Mars, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandson; two sisters, Angeline Torrenga of Clinton, Wis., and Jennie and her husband, Gene Vande Brake, of Maurice, Iowa; three brothers, Dick and his wife, Minnie, and Pete, all of Orange City, Iowa, and Howard and his wife, Joy, of Sibley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Cornie, Bill and Walter.

Linda Peterson

ALTA, Iowa - Linda Colleen Peterson, 47, of Alta died Tuesday of injuries suffered in an automobile acident.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Barker Funeral Home in Alta. Burial will be in Scandinavian Cemetery in Alta. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7:30 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

Hazel Olson, 76, of Vermillion, S.D., died Wednesday; Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home of Vermillion.

Pedro F. Sebastian
Pedro Fransico Sebastian, infant son of Fransico and Margarita Sebastian of Sioux City, was stillborn Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Calvary Cemetery. Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Ann Burge
Mary Ann Burge, 69, of Essex, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Neb.
Services will be 9:30 a.m. Friday at Heafey-Heafey-Hoffman-Dworak-Cutler West Center Chapel in Omaha, Neb., with Erin Heckeroth officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home in Omaha. Dorr Funeral Home of Falls City, Neb., is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Burge was born Feb. 3, 1929, in Omaha, the daughter of Earney Lester and Clarice Bergetta (McCracken) Schwasinger. She graduated from Omaha Tech High School.

She married Mel Burge on July 29, 1948, in Papillion, Neb. The couple lived in Omaha. They lived in Lyons, Neb., from 1967 to 1970. They then returned to Omaha, before moving to Essex in September 1997.

She was a member of Northside Christian Church in Omaha and the Order of the Eastern Star Narcissus Chapter 28.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Steven of Dakota City, Keith of Waterloo, Iowa, and Russell of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a daughter, Karen Lucht of Omaha; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Sheryl Burge.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Saunders, Scott Friel, Archie Brown, Michael Schweigart, Robert Kiester and R. Michael Harm.

Alex Kantrovich

Alex Kantrovich, 83, of Sioux City died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Congregation Beth Shalom. Burial will be in Independent Farane. There will be no visitation. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
