Aart den Hoed Sr.
3/14/1912 - Thursday, February 05, 2009

Aart den Hoed Sr., 96, of Rock Valley, IA died Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Whispering Heights Care Center in Rock Valley.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 10AM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center with Rev. P.L. Bazen officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Saturday from 1-8PM, with the family present from 6-8Pm at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The den Hoed family requests no flowers, memorials are preferred to the Netherlands Reformed Christian School of Rock Valley.

Aart Willem den Hoed Sr. was born in Ridderkerk, The Netherlands to Willem and Cornelia (Lodder) den Hoed on March 14, 1912. He was raised and educated in the Netherlands. On May 10, 1935 he married Maria Noordlander. Maria preceded him in death on July 18, 2002. Aart and Maria immigrated to the United States as a young couple and were blessed with fifteen children.

Aart was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Church of Rock Valley.

Survivors include his five daughters: Corrie (John A.) Schelling of Sioux Center; Nanda (Nick) Ver Steeg of Visalia, CA; Mina Sly of Springfield, MO; Maria (Andy) Teunissen of Doon; Trudy (Rich) Carstens of Park Rapids, MN; ten sons: Bill (Gertie) den Hoed of Canton, SD; John (Diane) den Hoed of Putney, GA; Aart (Sharon) den Hoed of Quapaw, OK; Piet (Arlene) den Hoed of Davenport, IA; Arie (Betty) den Hoed of Rock Valley; Len (Trudy) den Hoed of Sioux Falls, SD; Abe (Shirley) den Hoed of Hull; Adrian den Hoed of Ft. Collins, CO; Leo (Elaine) den Hoed of Ft. Collins, Co; Walt (Lavonne) den Hoed of Hull; 60 grandchildren, 135 great grandchildren, 13 great, great grandchildren and 1 great, great, great grandchild.

Aart is also survived by a brother, Abram den Hoed, sisters-in-law and extended family members all in the Netherlands.

In addition to his wife, Aart was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Angie den Hoed; his grandson, Ricky Carstens; his parents; four brothers and two sisters.

Norm Matheis
2/8/1926 - Friday, February 06, 2009

NORMAN MATHEIS, 82, of Sioux Center, Iowa died Friday, February 6, 2009 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11AM at Covenant Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center, with Rev. Herm Van Niejenhuis officiating. Interment will be held prior to the memorial service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A prayer service will be held Thursday at 10AM at Covenant Christian Reformed Church.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

In lieu of flowers the Matheis family prefers memorials to Bethany Christian Services, New Life Treatment Center or CHEARS Home Health & Hospice.

Norman Matheis (83) was born to Jack and Jacoba (Meijer) Matheis on February 8, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was raised. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1944-46. Norm studied at Kendall School of Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and apprenticed for three years with Dr. Alexander Zlatoff Mirsky in Chicago, IL. He later attended Calvin College, and received an MFA from the University of Michigan. He taught at Kendall School of Design, Calvin College, and Dordt College in Sioux Center until his retirement in 1989.

He married Shirley Olthuis in Neerlandia, Alberta on August 23, 1957.

Supremely gifted and confident as an artist, yet uncommonly modest and unassuming in manner, Norm in his quiet way influenced the lives of many. Norm was a very private man with a wry sense of humor, a man of few words whose work and actions spoke for him. Personally frugal, he shared his work generously. A man of strong faith, Norm’s overarching concern was that every part of his life--especially his artwork--would please the Lord and reflect His glory. His prayer was always that his children and grandchildren would have that same assurance of faith and the same desire to serve the Lord.

Norm was a gentle, patient father and grandfather, much loved by his family. He will be greatly missed by those who were privileged to know him intimately:

his wife of 51 1/2 years Shirley Matheis of Sioux Center; his children: Jeff and Kristy Matheis of Boise, ID, Ellen and Dave Mouw and Ken Matheis all of Sioux Center; his grandchildren: Julie Matheis and fiancé, Adam Roth of Waterloo, IA, Lindsay, Mitchell, Anna and Hudson Mouw all of Sioux Center; step-grandchildren: Sherri and Heath Harper of Copperas Cove, TX, Theresa and Todd McDonough of Boise, ID, AJ and Amanda Balderrama of Mountain Home, ID; 11 step great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Jack and Jean Matheis of Lynden, WA and Dennis and MaryAnn Matheis of Grand Rapids, MI; sister, Kathleen Smith of Cleveland, OH; and former daughter-in-law and her husband, Joyce and Kevin Zubrod of Sutherland, IA.

Also left to cherish Norman’s memory are in-laws: Elsie Navis, Joan and Ralph Bos all of Barrhead, AB, Jack and Glory Ann Olthuis of Big Rapids, MI, Clarence and Rose Olthuis, Fred and Sandra Olthuis all of Neerlandia, AB, Stan and Joanne Olthuis of Toronto, ON, and Linda Olthuis of Barrhead, AB as well as many nieces and nephews and their children.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother and sister-in-law, George and Irene Matheis; brother-in-law, Henk Navis and an infant granddaughter.

Mary Hulstein
6/15/1918 - Saturday, February 07, 2009

Mary Hulstein, 90, of Sioux Center, Iowa died Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Sheldon Sanford Senior Care.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2PM at the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the funeral service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Monday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

Mary Hulstein was born in Orange City, Iowa on June 15, 1918, the daughter of Herman and Nelji (Oesthoek) Kluis. She often said “she missed the boat” because her parents and all her siblings came over on a ship from the Netherlands. During her childhood her family moved eleven times in thirteen years; mostly in the Slayton, Lake Wilson and Chandler, Minnesota areas, but also a couple of places in Iowa near Orange City.

As a young woman, Mary supported the World War II effort by helping to build B24 airplanes in a converted factory in Detroit, Michigan. After the war she returned to Orange City where she worked in a bakery with her father and at a grocery store. On August 16, 1946 she was united in marriage to William C. Hulstein in Orange City. Bill preceded her in death on February 6, 2000. The couple settled on a farm four miles northeast of Sioux Center, Iowa where they raised their two children.

Mary and Bill farmed until their retirement in 1979. At that time they moved to a home in Sioux Center, enjoying many winter seasons in Texas with friends. Throughout her life, Mary was fond of gardening and growing flowers. She enjoyed working outdoors and often helped Bill with fieldwork. Mary liked baking and was always trying new recipes. Spare time was spent playing cards with friends, bowling and doingembroidery. She became a resident of Sheldon Sanford Senior care in October of 2007.

Mary is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Linda Hulstein of Hull; daughter and son-in-law, Rhoda and Roger Klein of Hull; her 7 grandchildren: Ann (Justin) Hickson of Eagan, MN, Matt (Alethea) Hulstein of Sioux Center, Mark (Sara) Hulstein of Sioux Center, Amy (Nathan Strenge) Hulstein of Sioux Falls, Jaime (Jeremy) Te Grotenhuis of Sioux Falls, Angie (Jeremy) Rempfer of Scotland, SD, Mike (Alicia) Klein of Hull; and 11 great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Henrietta Kluis of Chandler, MN and Arta Jans of Sioux Center along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her step mother, Louisa Kluis; brothers and sisters-in-law: Dick and Bertha Kluis of Maurice and Arie and Erma Kluis of Slayton; a brother, Felix Kluis of Slayton; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Dallas Granda of Indian River, MI.

Elmer Van Wyk
1/3/1933 - Wednesday, February 18, 2009

ELMER VAN WYK, 76, of Sioux Center, IA, formerly of George, IA, died Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 1:30PM at the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center, with Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Friday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The Van Wyk family prefers memorials to the Alzheimer Association.

Elmer Van Wyk was known for his terrific sense of humor and brilliant smile. For most of his adult life, Elmer worked as a professional barber. His friendly, playful personality made him well-suited for the atmosphere in his barber shops in George and Maurice, Iowa.

Elmer was born in Sheldon, Iowa on January 3, 1933, one of seven sons born to Harry and Hattie (De Boer) Van Wyk. He was raised near Carnes, Iowa and attended country school through the eighth grade. He attended high school at Northwestern Academy in Orange City. As a young man he worked in construction.

Elmer served in the U.S. Army from January 1954 to January 1956, most of which time was spent stationed in Germany. After receiving his honorable discharge he returned to Orange City where he worked at the Armour Packing Plant.

On August 8, 1958, he married Elizabeth (Betty) Lammers in Sioux Center, Iowa and was later blessed with two sons. After living in Tyler, MN where Elmer worked for the Elevator, he attended Barber College. His family settled in George, Iowa after he opened Van Wyk’s Barber Shop. Elmer also worked as a hog buyer for Supreme Packing Company while barbering. He drove the school bus for the George School District for 25 years. Elmer later moved his barber shop to Maurice, Iowa, and he and Betty moved to nearby Sioux Center in 2001.

In George, Elmer served as a deacon at Hope Reformed Church and later became a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the American Legion, and was active in Jaycees and the George Chamber of Commerce. He became a member of First Reformed Church after settling in Sioux Center.

Elmer enjoyed attending sporting events and felt honored to drive bus for the George high school athletes. His spare time was spent playing cards with friends, camping, traveling, fishing and enjoying life.

Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Betty Van Wyk of Sioux Center; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lori Van Wyk of Sioux Falls and son, Jerry Van Wyk of Sioux Center. Elmer is also survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law: Gerrit and Phyllis Van Wyk of Orange City; Peter and Kathleen Van Wyk of Orange City; John and Norma Van Wyk of Sioux Center along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Mike, Harry and Don Van Wyk and sister-in-law, Shirley Van Wyk.

Gerrit H. Van Voorst
4/27/1927 - Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Gerrit H. Van Voorst, 81 of Sioux Center died Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at his Sioux Center home.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 10:00AM at The Netherlands Reformed Church with Reverend H. Hoffman Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Friday from 2-8:30PM, with the family present from 6:30-8:30PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

In lieu of flowers the Van Voorst Family prefers memorials be directed to CHEARS Home Health and Hospice.

Gerrit Van Voorst was the son of Henry and Alice (Vande Hoef) Van Voorst, born on April 27, 1927 at the home of his parents near Sioux Center, IA. He attended country school through the 8th grade. He married Johanna Vanden Brink on Sept. 16, 1948. Gerrit operated, along with his brother John, the family farm and dairy for 42 years. After retiring he took up woodworking, wintered in Arizona, and helped on the farm. He was a lifetime member of the Netherlands Reformed Church. Gerrit died at home on February 24, 2009 after a 3 ˝ year battle from leukemia. Gerrit found joy in his work, love for his family and gratitude for each day.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 60 years, Johanna; two sons: Harlan and Karen (Dobson) Van Voorst, James and Janene (Wisse) Van Voorst, both of Sioux Center; six daughters: Mavis Den Boer of Rock Valley, Carol and Dave Johnson of Strasburg, VA, Sue and Jeff Meendering of Inwood, Donna and Larry De Weerd, Sharon and Lyle Den Herder, both of Sioux Center, Janice and Loren Roetman of Mesa, AZ; 30 grandchildren and 21 great grand¬children; a brother, Jake (Freda) Van Voorst of Inwood; four sisters: Gertrude Van Beek of Sioux Center, Hattie (John) Rus of Corsica, SD, Marie (John) Bakker of Rock Valley, and Priscilla (Jack) Dibbet of Sioux Center; brother-in-law, Bill Van Bochove of Rock Valley; two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Van Voorst and Tillie Van Voorst both of Sioux Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: John and Rich Van Voorst; sister, Minnie Van Bochove and brother-in-law, Henry Van Beek.

Ted Van Voorst
4/21/1922 - Thursday, February 26, 2009

Ted Van Voorst, 86, of Sioux Center died Thursday, February 26, 2009 at the Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2pm at Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Carl Klompein officiating. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Friday from 4-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at Bethel Christian Reformed Church.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The Van Voorst family prefers memorials be directed to: Sioux Center Community Hospital Foundation and CHEARS Home Health and Hospice.

Theodore (Ted) Van Voorst was born on April 21, 1922 to Bert and Henrietta (Schut) Van Voorst near Chester, South Dakota. At a young age, Ted moved with his family to an acreage just west of Sioux Center where Ted completed his education at the Sioux Center Community School. The family then moved to a farm near Ireton. In the spring of 1945, Ted entered the service during WWII. On September 5, 1945, while home on furlough, Ted was joined in marriage to Geraldine Schiebout at the Ireton Christian Reformed Church. Five days later, Ted left for a one year tour of duty in Japan before returning home in October of 1946.

Ted worked at "Sinkey" Garage in Ireton until 1951, at which time Ted and Geraldine began farming. They farmed first at Orange City, then Ireton, LeMars and finally at Hull. They raised hogs and milked during those years. The couple farmed for more than 35 years, before semi-retiring to an acreage by Hull where they lived for six years. In, 1992, they retired to Sioux Center, and in April of 2008 they moved into Crown Pointe in Sioux Center. Ted became a resident at the Royal Meadows Care Centre in December of 2008.

Ted was faithful in service to his church and in his church attendance. He served as a deacon in Ireton CRC and an elder in LeMars CRC and Hull CRC. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, woodworking and fixing puzzles. He cherished the times spent together with his family.

Ted is survived by his wife of 63 years, Geraldine of Sioux Center; four sons and daughter-in-laws: Donald and Marjorie Van Voorst, Wilbert and Connie Van Voorst and Gerald and Marcia Van Voorst all of Sioux Center, and Wayne and Gloria Van Voorst of Lakefield, Minnesota.; daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Rodney Wielenga of Orange City, Iowa; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Harriet Van Voorst of Sioux Center; Ann Van Bruggen of Orange City; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Ben and Irene Schiebout, Chris and Ila Schiebout and Clarence and Lena Vander Laan, all of Orange City; Abe and Hermina Schiebout of Pipestone, Minnesota; Herman and Betty Schiebout of Denver, Colorado; Gene and Adri Ruisch of LeMars Iowa; and William and Sue Schiebout of Loveland, Colorado as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Hermina Van Voorst; brothers, Richard B. Van Voorst and John B. Van Voorst; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ferd and Florence Schiebout, Henry and Ethel Schiebout, Peter and Johanna Sinkey, brothers-in-law, Arie Van Bruggen and Gay Krull.

Peter Van Muyden
11/11/1914 - Monday, March 09, 2009

Peter Van Muyden, 94 of Sioux Center died Monday, March 9, 2009, at Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center.

Arrangements are being completed with Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday at 2:00PM at First Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Bob Holtrop officiating. Interment will be held following the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The Van Muyden family prefers memorials be directed to American Diabetes Association or First Reformed Church of Sioux Center.

Peter Van Muyden was born November 11, 1914, to Cornelius and Anna (Bonnema) Van Muyden near Sheldon, Iowa. When Peter was a child the Van Muyden family moved to the Sioux Center area. He attended Sioux Center schools through the seventh grade.

On May 9, 1941, Peter married Hermina Wybenga in Orange City. Within the first year of their marriage Peter was called upon by his country to serve during WWII. He served in the Army for three full years spending most of his time as a part of the European and African Theater.

After returning home, Peter worked as a farm laborer for 13 years and then as a mechanic. He later started a custom feed grinding business. He retired in 1987 but stayed busy driving feed truck for the COOP elevator and driving cars for Mouw Motor.

Peter was a longtime member of First Reformed Church of Sioux Center. He loved spending time with his family. In his free time he enjoyed fishing, playing cards and snooker. He was a proud member of the American Legion.

Peter is survived by his wife of 67 years, Hermina of Sioux Center; his children: Janice and Dick Sens of Everly, IA, Carmen and Sandy Van Muyden of Buffalo, MN, Denise and Ronald Stapf of Rosemount, MN and Arnie and Bev Schelling of Sioux Center who Peter and Hermina have considered as close as children for years. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Glen Brinkhuis of West Sacramento, CA; brother, Milton Van Muyden of Sacramento, CA; brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Hermie Van Muyden of Elk Grove, CA; sister-in-law, Lorita Van Muyden of Hull; brother-in-law, John Mulder of Sioux Center and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Leona Mulder; sister and brother-in-law, Ethel and Gerb Garretson; brother, Lester Van Muyden and his first wife, Kathleen; brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Winifred and five siblings in infancy.
