Jeanette Feekes
9/27/1927 - Sunday, March 15, 2009

JEANETTE FEEKES, 81, of Sioux Center, IA died Sunday, March 15, 2009 at Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden, IA.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 10:30AM at the Carmel Reformed Church of rural Rock Valley, with Rev. Mark Heijerman officiating. Interment will follow in the Carmel Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The Feekes family prefers memorials to Hospice of Siouxland or Carmel Reformed Church.

Jeanette (Vonk) Feekes was born on 27 September 1927 to Ben and Jennie (Katze) Vonk on a farm near Sioux Center, Iowa. She received an education through the eighth grade at country school, Center #4.

Jeanette married John Feekes on February 4, 1948. They began farming and raising a family on a farm west of Sioux Center. Four years later they bought their own farm near Carmel where they farmed for 24 years. In 1977 they moved to Rugby, North Dakota where they made there home for the next ten years. In 1987 they returned to the Sioux Center area. From 1996 they made their home in Arizona before again returning home to Iowa in 2007. John and Jeanette were happily married for 61 years.

Over the years Jeanette and John were members of Carmel Reformed Church in Carmel and First Lutheran Church while living in Rugby.

Jeanette enjoyed spending her free time playing cards, quilting and doing cross stitch. She was involved in the Women's Circle of Carmel Church. She loved flowers and gardening.

Jeanette is survived by her husband, John Feekes of Hawarden; her seven children:

Harlen and Cheryl Feekes of Modesto, CA, Nelva and Tom Petersen of Dunlap, IA, Mike Feekes of Irene, SD, Doug and Melinda Feekes of Litchfield, AZ, Cheri Helfenstein of Mons, Belgium and Ryan Helfenstein of Incirlik, Turkey, Tami Feekes-Benedict of Marina, CA, Verlyn & Maria Feekes of Elbert, CO; her 16 grandchildren: Todd & Becky Feekes, Jason and Kristy DeCoteau, Jeremy & Jasmine Taylor, Shad & Missy Kats, Jason & Misti Fykstra, Molly Kats & Wyatt Junge, Jeremy & Jessica Gesink, Nathan & Jamie Blum, Colin Helfenstein, Kianna Helfenstein, PJ Feekes-Benedict, Christopher Feekes-Benedict, Kayli Feekes-Benedict, Tyler Feekes, Matthew Feekes, and Tatiana Feekes; 16 great grandchildren: Natasha Feekes, Samantha Feekes, Drew DeCoteau, Alex Buchholz, Kerrigan Kats, Jerad Kats, Braedon Kats, Dustin Fykstra, Kyra Fykstra, Alisha Junge, Grace Junge, Ethan Gesink, Ty Gesink, Carson Gesink, Logan Blum and Drew Blum.

Jeanette is also survivied by two brothers and sisters-in-law: George and Chris Vonk of Sioux Center and Eugene and Judi Vonk of Ireton; three sisters and brothers-in-law: Gertrude and Elmer Van De Berg of Sioux Center, Kathy and Harold Vande Kieft of Orange City, Dorothy and Andy Van Bochove of Sun City, AZ; three sister-in-laws: Wynn Vonk of Sioux Center, Donna Vonk of Sioux Center and Gertrude Vonk of Mountain Lake, MN; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her her grandson, Jeremey Feekes; her parents; sister and brother-in-law, Goldie and B. Duane De Jager; four brothers and two sister in-laws: Henry Vonk, Ben Vonk, Pete Vonk, Gerrit and Jennie Vonk and Henrietta Vonk.

Marvin Wissink
5/3/1925 - Sunday, March 22, 2009

Marvin E. Wissink, 83, of Sioux Center, IA died Sunday, March 22, 2009 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11:00AM at First Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Arnold Punt officiating. Interment will be held prior to the memorial service in Hope Cemetery of Hull.

Visitation will be held Tuesday at First Reformed Church of Sioux Center from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM.

The Wissink family prefers memorials be directed to Words of Hope Ministries or CHEARS Home Health & Hospice.

Marvin Edward Wissink was born to Henry and Lydia (Essink) Wissink on May 3, 1925, at Holland, Nebraska. He moved to Iowa with his family in March 1927 and lived on a farm south of Hull. He attended country school through eighth grade at Welcome No. 1 and farmed with his father. He married Phyllis Smit on October 30, 1946. He enjoyed farming and farmed on his parents’ farm for 42 years. The couple retired in 1988 and moved to Sioux Center. Although living in town, he still enjoyed going to the farm where his heart was to check on things and help with harvest.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing games and pool with family and friends and also traveling on tours. He enjoyed family gatherings and believed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were really special gifts. When the couple lived near Hull, he was a member of Hull First Reformed Church where he served as an elder and deacon and was also a member of Brotherhood. After moving to Sioux Center he became a member of First Reformed Church.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Phyllis of Sioux Center; his four children and their families, Alvin and Rosemary Wissink of Fall Creek, Wisconsin, and their children, Amy and Joel Swanson, Nathan and Steph Wissink, Robin and Ernie Parker; Milton and Mary Wissink of Orange City and their children, Stacia and Joshua Rath and son Elijah, and Ceann and Donovan Draayer and children Landon and Adalynn; Doyle and Jeanette (Jan) Wissink of Hull and their children, Amber and Bob Minard and children Malana and Faith, Justin Wissink, Joshua and Aleisha Wissink; and Gloria and Scott Beernink of Sioux Center and their children, Molly Beernink and Sam Beernink. Also left to cherish his memory are two sisters-in-law, Caroline Wissink of Hull and Geneva Wissink of Sibley, IA as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Martin and Lawrence Wissink; a sister, Hilda and her husband Arthur Ten Haken.

Neal Kleyweg

Cornelius “Neal” Kleyweg Jr, 77, of St. Paul, MN formerly of Sioux Center, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at his residence in St. Paul.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 11AM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center with Rev. H. Hofman Jr. officiating. Interment will follow the funeral in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation with the family present will be held Monday from 9:30 to service time at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

In leiu of flowers the Kleyweg family prefers memorials to the Netherlands Reformed Christian School of Rock Valley, IA.

Cornelius “Neal” Kleyweg Jr. was born November 5, 1931, in Sioux City, Iowa; he is preceded in death by his parents Cornelius and Elizabeth (Krommenhock) Kleyweg, Sr.; brother-in-law, Robert Jassey; grandson, Jason; brother, Henry Kleyweg and nephew, Richard Jassey.

He was beloved by wife Kathryne (Seipel) Kleyweg of St. Paul; children: Laura Kleyweg, William Kleyweg, Joan (Dean) Sinna and Sharon “Dee” Kleyweg all of St. Paul; grandchildren: Jennifer Kleyweg and Justin Kleyweg, both of St. Paul; siblings: Barbara Kleyweg of Evanston, IL, Nicholas and Della Kleyweg of Sioux City, Cornelia Jassey of Sioux Center and Martin and Peggy Kleyweg of Downers Grove, IL; sister-in-law, Mary Kleyweg of Camby, IN and other family and friends.

Jean Achterhof
10/9/1917 - Sunday, March 29, 2009

Jean Achterhof, 91, of Rapid City, SD, formerly of Sioux Center, IA, died Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Hospice of the Hills in Rapids City.

A prayer service to celebrate her life will be held at the First Reformed Church Chapel on Friday at 11AM, with Rev. Bob Holtrop officiating. A graveside service will immediately follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Jeanetta Jane (Van Otterloo) was born October 9, 1917, at Rock Valley, IA, to John and Adrianna (Noteboom) Van Otterloo. On October 25, 1935, Jean married Lawrence Achterhof, in Sioux Center, where the couple lived for over 64 years.

Jean served as county chairman for the TB Association and bookkeeper for Achterhof Real Estate for many years. In addition to being a board member of the Sioux County Iowa Council on Aging, she sang with the County Women’s Chorus and the Praise Choir of First Reformed Church.

Throughout Jean’s life, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, singing, sewing, crocheting, playing piano and organ, painting and knitting. Every fall her grandchildren would look forward to receiving the warm, colorful mittens and scarves Grandma had lovingly knitted for them. Following Lawrence’s death, in 2000, Jean lived with her son Douglas and his family in Wellman, IA and Glenwood, IA. In 2006, she moved to Somerset Court, in Rapid City, SD.

Jean Achterhof is survived by two sons, Roger (Carole) Achterhof of Spirit Lake, IA, and Douglas (Karen) Achterhof of Dayton, WY; one daughter, Beverly Rohl of Rapid City; nine grandchildren: Dane (Cheryl) De Kock of West Des Moines, IA, Douglas De Kock of Pleasant Hill, IA, Kristin (Glenn Ronaldson) Achterhof of Hinsdale, IL, Linda (James) Davis of Barrington, RI, Marta Achterhof of Spirit Lake, IA, Kona Achterhof of Missoula, MT, Tara (Vic) Garrett of Walker, MO, Troy Achterhof of Gillette, WY, and Kley Achterhof of Ranchester, WY; and four great-grandsons: Jeremy and Colby Garrett, Cole De Kock and Sidney Davis.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence; her parents; daughter and son-in-law, Deloras and Duane De Kock; son-in-law, Michael Rohl; granddaughter, Kate Achterhof; great-grandson, Daniel Achterhof and a brother, Gerrit Van Otterloo.

Gerald H. Breneman
12/5/1918 - Wednesday, April 01, 2009

Gerald H. Breneman, 90, of Sioux Center, IA formerly of Macedonia, IA died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

A funeral will be held Saturday, April 4, 2009, at 2PM at Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. R. Van Rathbun officiating. Interment will follow the funeral in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service starting at 1PM at Central Reformed Church.

Gerald Hartz Breneman was born on December 5, 1918, to Erven Eversole Breneman and Minnie Louise (Hartz) Breneman in Carson, Iowa and was raised on the family farm near Macedonia, Iowa. He received education through the 12th grade at Macedonia Consolidated School. Gerald was a member of the football team earning SW Iowa All-Star honors for six on six football. He was also a member of the baseball team playing second base. He won honors with his Grand champion Swine at the East Pottawattamie County Fair.

Gerald served in the 14th Airdrome Squadron Army Air Corp Unit from January 1942 through December 1945 as an aircraft mechanic during World War II. Service outside the US included time in New Caldonia, Efate Island in New Hebrides, Guadacanal, Munda Island in New Georgia, Morotia and the Philippines. Upon his return from the service he married Violette Olive Buschenfield on December 9, 1945, at the home of his parents near Macedonia.

Gerald spent his lifetime, until retirement, farming the Family Century Farm near Macedonia raising swine, chickens and milking Gurney cows as well as tending to the cropland.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Macedonia but made Central Reformed Church his church home while living in Sioux Center. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Macedonia. One of his hobbies was gardening and he took pride in starting his own seedlings in his basement each spring, especially his many tomato varieties. He also enjoyed fishing. He will be remembered for the love he had for his family and time spent with them.

His survivors include his wife of over 63 years, Violette Olive Breneman of Sioux Center; daughter and son-in-law, Geralyn and Fred Sick of Sioux Center; two granddaughters and their husbands, Michelle and Philip Utley of Slater, Iowa and Shari and Michael McCarty of Dededo, Guam; four great-grandchildren, Hannah and Brody McCarty and Emma and Connor Utley.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Erven and Minnie Breneman.

Howard Den Hartog
6/10/1929 - Sunday, April 19, 2009

Howard Den Hartog, 79, of Sioux Center, IA went to be with his Lord on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 2PM in the Chapel of First Reformed Church of Sioux Center, with Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Monday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

Howard H. Den Hartog was born in Sheldon, Iowa on June 10, 1929, to Hilton and Bena (Wesselink) Den Hartog. Howard grew up in Sheldon working in the family auto salvage business.

On August 25, 1951, he was united in marriage to Hermina “Snooks” Mulder. Following their marriage they first lived in Sheldon where Howard was employed at Molmen Dairy. In 1963, they settled in Sioux Center, Iowa where he went to work for Schouten Plumbing and Heating. In 1986, Howard started his own business, Den Hartog Plumbing and Heating, which he operated until 2002. At which time he retired so he could care for his ailing wife. Hermina preceded him in death on December 25, 2003.

Over the years Howard enjoyed activities like camping and fishing with his family. He was fond of the restored ’64 Olds Cutlass he purchased, and loved showing it at area cars shows. Howard also enjoyed wood working and caring for his tropical fish. Most mornings he could be found at MJ’s or at a friends shop for coffee.

Surviving are his four children: Keith and Valerie Den Hartog of Sioux Center, Sandra and Gary Walker of Sioux City, Steven Den Hartog of Hull and Kevin Den Hartog of Sioux Center; seven grandchildren: Matthew (Kellie) Den Hartog of Hull, Scott (Lori) Den Hartog of Boise, ID, Amanda, Eric and Michael Tiedeman of Sioux City, Meghan and Baylee Den Hartog of Hull; step-grandson, Erik Walker of Eagan, MN; six great-grandchildren: Averey, Cooper and Colby Den Hartog of Hull, Willem and Anya Den Hartog of Boise, ID and Brooke Tiedeman of Sioux City. Howard is also survived by two sisters: Katherine Armington of Sioux Center and Norma Kruse of Rock Rapids; two brothers-in-laws: John and Jim Mulder of Sioux Center; sister-in-law, Gerdena Deinken of Sioux Center; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dora and Erv Van Zee of Sioux Center and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Howard was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law, Eva and George Landry, brother and sister-in-law, Bernie and Minnie Den Hartog; brothers-in-law: George Armington, Gary Deinken, Walter Kruse, Harry Van Wyk; sister-in-law, Leona Mulder and nephew, Randy Mulder.

Raymond L. De Jong

ALTON, Iowa -- Raymond L. De Jong, 86, of Alton died Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at Orange City Municipal Hospital in Orange City, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Alton Reformed Church. Burial will be prior to the service today in Nassau Township Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Floyd Post. There will be a family prayer service at 9:30 a.m. today at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City, Iowa.

Mildred L. Buck

COLUMBUS, Neb. -- Mildred L. Buck, 95, of Columbus, formerly of the Pisgah and Moorhead, Iowa, area, died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at Beverly Healthcare in Columbus.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus, with High Priest Marvin Morsbach officiating. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Saturday in Lyons Cemetery, Lyons, Neb., with Evangelist Robert Smith officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.mckownfuneralhome.com.

Mildred was born to George and Edith (Hunt) Perrin, in Pisgah, Iowa, on March 18, 1911. She lived in the Pisgah and Moorhead area all her young years, then moved to Rosalie, Neb., in 1927. She graduated from Rosalie High School in 1929. She then worked as a telephone operator.

She married Charles Lester Buck on Aug. 11, 1931, in Pender, Neb. Besides being a mother and homemaker, she worked at Younkers Department Store, Three Sisters Store, Fantel's, J.C. Penney's, Sears and Roebuck, Montgomery Wards, Sioux City Battery Co. and Johnson Biscuit Co., all in Sioux City. She also managed the Roe Dairy Store in South Sioux City until moving to Columbus with her husband in October 1971. They lived at the Heritage House until her husband's death in October 1976. She continued to live there until she moved into the Columbus Manor in November 1996.

She was a lifetime member of the Community of Christ Church, where she was baptized and confirmed at the age of eight.

She is survived by a son, Darrell (Marian) Buck of Columbus; daughters, Gertrude "Trudi" (Wilmer) Malcom of Fremont, Neb., and Deloris "Dee" (George) McCarthy of Columbus; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandsons; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Perrin of Petersburg, W.V.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester on Oct. 6, 1976; an infant son, Verl; her parents; a sister, Gertrude Doht; a brother, Elton Perrin; and a brother-in-law, Arthur Doht.

Rena B. Buck

BANCROFT, Neb. -- Rena B. Buck, 65, of Bancroft died Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Colonial Haven Nursing Home in Beemer, Neb.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Rosalie, Neb. Burial will be in Bancroft City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh Funeral Home in Bancroft.

Ann Peters

EMERSON, Neb. -- Ann Peters, 88, of Emerson passed away Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Heritage of Emerson Nursing Home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Emerson, with the Rev. Gretchen Ritola officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh Funeral Home in Emerson.

Ann was born July 25, 1917, in Chicago, Ill., to Joseph and Pauline (Klisiewicz) Przybyla.

She married Russell Peters of Waterbury, Neb., while he was stationed in Chicago during World War II. After his discharge, the couple returned to the Waterbury and Emerson area, where they farmed. Russell passed away Oct. 10, 1961. She moved into Emerson in January 1962. She was employed at the K&M Cafe and later at Waldbaum's in Wakefield, Neb. She moved into Heritage of Emerson on Jan. 1, 2005.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Emerson American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, doing crossword puzzles and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Sandie and Dale Cadwallader of Emerson, Neb., and Nancy and Fred Mackling of Emerson; a son, Bruce Peters of Niobrara, Neb.; grandchildren, Pat Cadwallader and his wife, Angela and Mike Cadwallader and his wife, Karri, all of Pender, Neb., Scott Mackling and his wife, Trisha and Doug Mackling and his wife, Jamie, all of Emerson, Brandon and Brittney Peters of Newcastle, Neb. and Angie Peters of Wausa, Neb.; and great-grandchildren, Brenden Selck and Derek Cadwallader both of Pender, Neb., Brodie, Caleigh, MaKenna, Addison and Brock Mackling of Emerson and Emily Peters of Wausa, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, John and Stanley Przybyla; and a great-grandson, Gunner Mackling.
