John W. Hass

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa -- John W. Hass, 83, of Rock Rapids, formerly of George, Iowa, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in Rock Rapids.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Baptist Church in Rock Rapids. The body has been donated to the University of Iowa Medical School in Iowa City. Arrangements are under the direction of Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.

Creston J. Van Schepen

HULL, Iowa -- Creston J. Van Schepen, 66, of Hull passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Sioux Center Community Hospital in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hope Christian Reformed Church in Hull, with the Rev. Todd Zuidema officiating. Burial will be prior to the service Thursday in Hope Cemetery. There will be a prayer service at 9:45 a.m. Thursday at Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.oolman.com.

Creston John, who was known as "Tess", was born July 29, 1939, in Hull, the son of Fred and Minnie (Hubers) Van Schepen. He was raised in Hull, where he graduated from Western Christian High School.

On Sept. 30, 1960, he married Betty Agnes Van Leeuwen in Hospers, Iowa. For the first 10 years of their marriage, they lived in California, where he manufactured orchard equipment. They then returned to Hull, where they have since made their home. He partnered with his father in Van's Implement, east of Hull. Later he became a truck driver. He first operated his own truck and then drove for Te Slaa Trucking and Vander Kooi Freight, both in Hull. He also was a salesman at Northwest Implement in Orange City, Iowa.

He was a member of Hope Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and collected toy tractors.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years; three children and their spouses, Curtis and Twyla Van Schepen of Sioux Center, Iowa, Cathy and Roy Van Engen of Doon, Iowa, and Craig and Lynette Van Schepen of Hull; 11 grandsons, Daniel Van Schepen and his wife, Shay, David Van Schepen, Cory Van Schepen, Cole Van Schepen, Trey Van Schepen, Matthew Van Engen and his wife, Krista, Chad Van Engen and his wife, Tiffany, Adam Van Engen, Lucas Van Engen, Nathan Van Schepen and Joshua Van Schepen; two great-grandsons, Jordan and Logan Van Engen; his mother of Hull; two sisters, Janice and her husband, Gil Blankespoor of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Marlys De Jong of Orange City, Iowa; two brothers and their wives, Bruce and Val Van Schepen of Orange City and Tim and Joy Van Schepen of Arnolds Park, Iowa.

In addition to his father, he also was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Bob De Jong.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice, CHEARS and Hope Haven.

Wayne Sutherland

SCHALLER, Iowa -- Wayne Sutherland, 85, of Schaller died Monday, April 17, 2006, at Holstein Good Samaritan Center in Holstein, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, with the Rev. David Lyons officiating. Burial will be in Cook Township Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller.

Wayne Sutherland was born June 13, 1920, in rural Schaller, to Earl and Maude (Miller) Sutherland. He received his education in a country school followed by high school at Schaller Public School, from which he graduated in 1937. He served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He married Deva Behrends on May 25, 1946, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two sons, Keith and Kent. The couple would have been married 60 years in May of this year. He spent most of his life farming. He drove a school bus after he retired from full-time work.

He loved trail rides, horse shows, parades and any other activity connected with horses. He was a member and past president of various local saddle clubs. He was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he once served as president of the congregation and for many years taught Sunday School.

Survivors include his wife, Deva of Schaller; two sons and their wives, Kent and Brenda Carns and Keith and Patricia Sutherland; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant granddaughter, Christine Jill.

Stanley W. De Boer

SHELDON, Iowa -- Stanley W. De Boer, 48, of Sheldon died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon. There will be no visitation or burial.

Edward A. Miedema

HOSPERS, Iowa -- Edward A. Miedema, 76, of Hospers died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Valley Manor Nursing Home in Rock Valley, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Christian Reformed Church in Hospers. Burial will be prior to the service Friday in Hospers Cemetery. There will be a prayer service at 10 a.m. Friday at Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Alice M. Klein

REMSEN, Iowa -- Alice May Klein, 50, of Stafford, Texas, formerly of Remsen, died Monday, April 17, 2006, in Missouri City, Texas.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Vineyard Church in Stafford, with the Rev. Herschel Rosser officiating. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday in West Gethsemane Cemetery, Rosenberg, Texas. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the State Room of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg, Texas.

Alice was born March 3, 1956, in Remsen, to Elmer and Melinda (Plathe) Klein.

She is survived by a daughter, Nicole Reichling of Stafford, Texas; two sons, Scott Reichling and his wife, Dawn of Stafford and Eric Reichling of Houston, Texas; a grandson, Lance Reichling of Stafford; her fiance, Robert Voelkel of Stafford; seven sisters, Carol Ruba of Remsen, Nancy Loehr of Enid, Okla., Susan Vaske of Remsen, Elaine Jungers of Sheldon, Iowa, Marilyn Treinen of Remsen, Marlys Ohlendorf of Remsen and Norma Klein of Stafford; three brothers, Malcolm Klein, Alan Klein and Charles Klein, all of Remsen; and other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Melinda Klein; a sister, Mavis Kunkel; and brothers, Elmer, Dennis, Donald and Thomas Klein.

Herman H. Kramer

STUART, Neb. -- Herman Henry Kramer, 85, of Stuart died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Parkside Manor in Stuart.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stuart. Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson, Neb.

Henry Bonnema

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- Henry Bonnema, 88, of Sioux Center died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

Arrangements are pending with Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

Greg Vander Schaaf

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Greg Vander Schaaf, 45, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at Woodstock, Ill., due to a head-on semi accident.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Reformed Church in Rock Valley. Visitation with the family present will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.

Wanda Sue Bates

Miss Wanda Sue Bates, 64, of Sioux City, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at her residence.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Third Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Jennifer Santer officiating. Burial will be in Milford Cemetery, Milford, Iowa. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Wanda was born Oct. 7, 1941, in Spencer, Iowa, the daughter of John Edwin and Roberta Lucille (Willison) Bates. She attended Okoboji High School through 1958 and graduated from Milford High School in 1959. She later attended and graduated from Morningside College in 1963. She had been a resident of Sioux City since 1959 and was employed as a secretary for attorney, Paul Deck, a real estate agent with Davenport and Associates, in a medical office, an insurance agent with Pennsylvania Life and in her church here in Sioux City.

She enjoyed going to family gatherings and functions, crafts, fishing and camping, selling Avon and being involved in 4-H in her younger years. She also participated at her church in various ways such as the choir, fund-raising events and many others.

Survivors include a brother and his wife, Irwin and Marilyn Bates of Milford; two nieces and their husbands, Becky and John Tollefson of Rockford, Ill., and Cindy and Richard Cody of Milford; great nieces, Jessica, Megan, Bryanna and Madison Sue; a great nephew, Christopher; as well as aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents' and a nephew, Russell Bates.

The family suggests memorials to Third Presbyterian Church.

Wallace Baack

HINTON, Iowa -- Wallace Baack, 91, of Hinton passed away suddenly Thursday, April 20, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill, Iowa, with the Rev. Peter Boe officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery at Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 3 to 5 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Online condolences may be viewed at www.carlsenfuneralhome.com.

Wallace Walter Baack was born Sept. 19, 1914, on the family farm in Liberty Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa, to Henry and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Bock) Baack. Wally was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. His parents farmed west of Merrill, where he received his education at Liberty Consolidated School. In 1948, Wally moved to Hinton. In his early years, he worked for the Hinton Telephone Exchange for "Doc" Jones.

Wally was very musically gifted and worked as a self-employed piano tuner for many years. He played the accordion for the "Timberoogens" on KSCJ for several years. He also played for the local dance bands, "Rythmatics" and "The Lakes Band". He played the pipe organ for St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill for over 50 years. Wally enjoyed playing the organ daily at his home and had played at church the Sunday before his passing. He enjoyed raising violets and was a lover of dogs; in particular, "Midge."

Survivors include two nieces and their husbands, Judy and Ed Nelson of Sioux City and Lucille and Wes Lancaster of Kansas City; a nephew and his wife, Wayne and Ester Pageler of Florida; and several grand and great grand nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Bock) Baack; two brothers, Paul and Louis Baack; a sister, Mathilda Nelson; and a niece, Shirley Heien.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Heien, Scott Nelson, Bryan Nelson, Mark Lancaster, David Lancaster and Tom Lancaster.

Elmo Morfitt

HARTLEY, Iowa -- Elmo Morfitt, 92, of Hartley died Saturday, April 22, 2006, at Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley.

Arrangements are pending with Hartley Funeral Home in Hartley.

Lady Lloyd

IDA GROVE, Iowa -- Lady Lloyd, 77, of Ida Grove died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Ida Grove, with the Rev. Russ L. Burnett officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Cemetery at Smithland, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove. Online condolences may be sent at www.christensenhuffman.com.

Born Jan. 27, 1929, at Marfa, Texas, Lady was the daughter of Herbert W. and Roberta D. (Davis) Humphris. She received her education in the Texas school system, graduating from El Paso High School in 1945. She then attended the University of Texas at El Paso.

In 1948, she married Tommie Amis. The couple settled in San Diego, Calif. in 1951, where they raised two daughters. The marriage later ended in divorce. Lady worked most of her life as a bookkeeper in the restaurant industry. Her last employer was a defense contractor, General Dynamics.

Lady met Bob Lloyd in San Diego. The couple married on Sept. 18, 1987, and upon Lady's retirement in 1991, made their home in Ida Grove. Bob passed away on Sept. 24, 2002. Lady had been employed as a caregiver the entire time she lived in Ida Grove and for several years was site manager for Community Senior Dinners.

She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where she faithfully served in the nursery, United Methodist Women's Circle, Courtesy Lunch, Mission's Committee, Outreach Program and participated in various Bible studies. She was honored to receive the United Methodist Women Special Mission Recognition earlier this year.

Lady was always eager to help in any situation and was well known for her generosity of spirit. During the course of her time in Ida Grove, she developed many deep and lasting friendships. She loved people and had many friends because she was a loyal friend herself. She will be greatly missed.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters and their spouses, Donna and Bill Davis of the Philippines and Suzy and Carl Haines of San Diego; four grandchildren, Lisa (Davis) Schlink, Bethy Davis, Tyler Haines and Kimmy Haines. Lady dearly loved Bob Lloyd's large extended family and always looked forward to the Lloyd family reunions.

In addition to her husband, Bob, she was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Helen.

Dale Halquist

SPENCER, Iowa -- Dale Halquist, 84, of Spencer died Friday, April 21, 2006, at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Spencer. Visitation will begin noon Monday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.

Frances Downs

DENISON, Iowa -- Frances Downs, 98, of Atlantic, Iowa, formerly of Denison, died Friday, April 21, 2006, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Dow City Cemetery at Dow City, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison.

Ambrose 'Amos' Block

HOSPERS, Iowa -- Ambrose "Amos" Block, 84, of Hospers died Friday, April 21, 2006, at Orange City Municipal Hospital in Orange City, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hospers, with the Rev. John Vakulskas officiating. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery at Hospers. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen, Iowa.

Ambrose Block was born Nov. 22, 1921, in rural Hospers, the son of John and Cecelia (Jungers) Block. He was raised in the Hospers area and received his education at St. Anthony's Catholic School in Hospers.

On Nov. 16, 1948, he married Bernice Pottebaum at Alton, Iowa. The couple made their home near Hospers where they were engaged in farming. They moved into Hospers in 1990, and he retired from farming in 1991. Bernice died Dec. 18, 1997.

He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church of Hospers and Knights of Columbus of Granville, Iowa.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Block and Diane and her husband, Gary Gesink, all of Hospers; four grandchildren, Chris Gesink of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jen Gesink, Adam Gesink and Ashley Gesink, all at home at Hospers; a sister, Frances O'Kane of Le Mars, Iowa; a brother, Oscar Block and his wife, Bernice of Remsen; as well as many brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter, Barbara Block.

Pallbearers will be Charlie and Dan Block, Dave O'Kane, Jim Pottebaum and Jerry and Paul Schueller.
