Arlys JoAnn (Hanno) Norman

LE MARS, Iowa -- Arlys JoAnn (Hanno) Norman, 73, of St. Joseph, Mo., formerly of Le Mars, died Saturday, April 22, 2006, at her home.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Memorial Cemetery at Le Mars. Ms. Norman has been cremated under the direction of Gladden-Stamey Funeral Home in St. Joseph.

Elizabeth P. Hoelscher

Elizabeth Pauline Hoelscher, 78, of Sioux City died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.

Private graveside services will be Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., with the Rev. Michael Erpelding, pastor, St. Joseph Catholic Church, officiating, at Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel.

Elizabeth Pauline was born on April 22, 1927, in Sioux City, the daughter of Francis and Elizabeth (Hoelker) Laehle. She was raised in Sioux City and attended East High School.

She married Eldon V. "Al" Hoelscher on Oct. 7, 1949. He died on June 11, 1998, in Sioux City. The couple and their family lived in Northwest Iowa most of their lives until moving to Sioux City.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux City.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Hoelscher of Sioux City, Nadine and her husband, Ron Ruden of Hinton, Iowa and June Carpenter of Inverness, Fla.; two sons, Edward and his wife, Carleen of Hinton and Dale of Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Bradley, Steven, Heather, Jonathan, Matthew, Cole and Erin; and a great-granddaughter, Breigh Campbell.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Ruden, Bradley Hoelscher, Steven Hoelscher and Don Small. Honorary pallbearers will be Cole Carpenter, Erin Carpenter, Matthew Ruden, Heather Ruden and Shannon Lesko.

A memorial has been established in Elizabeth's name for the American Diabetes Association.

David Michael Bitter

David Michael Bitter, 53, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, April 20, 2006.

Arrangements are pending with Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Heath De Goei

Heath De Goei, 31, of Irvine, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at Huntington Beach, Calif.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Craig, Iowa, with the Rev. Marvin Mueller and Chaplain Alan Tyson officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Ireton, Iowa. Visitation will begin noon Monday, with the family present 6 to 7:30 p.m., at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden, Iowa.

Christopher Heath De Goei was born June 17, 1974, at West Point, Neb., the son of Dale and Mary (Westergard) De Goei. He attended school in Geneseo, Ill., and graduated in 1993 from North High School in Sioux City, where he played football. Heath graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1997. While at UNI, he was active in the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.

With his degree in international business, Heath moved to California and married Jessica Shupe in May of 1998 at Las Vegas, Nev. The couple made their home in Huntington Beach before moving to Irvine. He was employed as a financial analyst with a number of companies, including the Irvine Company, Impact Mortgage and currently with Wachovia.

Heath had the personality to be able to strike up a conversation with anyone he met. He enjoyed many outdoor activities including sailing, snow skiing and snow boarding, sand volleyball and fishing. He valued time spent with his friends and family with whom he would cook, grill and entertain. Heath liked to travel, and he and Jessica toured Europe in September of 2005. He liked classic cars and his miniature schnauzer, "Paige."

Survivors include his parents, Dale and Mary De Goei of Springdale, Ark., a brother, Travis of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Hilarie Glass and her daughter, Gracie, also of Omaha; his grandmother, Darlene Westergard of Ireton, Iowa; as well as uncles, aunts and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Fred Westergard; and his paternal grandparents, Art and Alice De Goei.

Frank J. Work

Frank J. Work, 81, of Sioux City died Friday, April 21, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel G. Guenther officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery at Moville, Iowa. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Frank Joseph Work was born Dec. 11, 1924, in Sioux City, the son of Wilbur Lester and Violet (Bergman) Work. He attended and graduated from Central High School in 1942. He joined the U.S. Marines in 1943, serving in World War II. He was a lifelong resident of Sioux City.

He was united in marriage to Susan V. McMahon on Feb. 19, 1951, in Elk Point, S.D. Mr. Work was a brakeman and a conductor for the Milwaukee Railroad and then later for the Burlington Northern Railroad. He also worked as a security guard at M.C.I. in Sergeant Bluff.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. His hobbies included golf, shooting trap, fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Susan (McMahon) Work of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Vincent and Barb Work of Sioux City; grandchildren, Stefanie, Daniel and Kaylee Work; three sisters, Betty and her husband, Howard Osterholt of Jackson, Neb., Helen Mahnke of Billings, Mont. and Carol and her husband, Mike Johnson of Seattle, Wash.; a brother and his wife, Robert and Lola Work of Eugene, Ore.; as well as nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Violet Work; and a brother, Wilbur Work.

Memorials may be directed to Immaculate Conception Church.

Charmalee L. Essig

Charmalee L. Essig, 40, of Sioux City died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital, after a year and a half battle with cancer.

Services will be 1 p.m. today at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with Chaplain Stacey Gerhart officiating. Visitation with the family present will be noon to 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Charmalee was born Feb. 23, 1966, in Sioux City, the daughter of Richard Wayne and DonnaLou (Hinrickson) Knutson. She attended Sioux City schools and graduated from North High School in 1984.

She was united in marriage to Clinton E. Essig on May 6, 1996, in Las Vegas, Nev. She was a lifelong resident of Sioux City. She was employed with Gateway Computer Manufacturing in North Sioux City and most recently with Pech Optical in Sioux City.

Charmalee enjoyed NASCAR racing, helping people and gatherings with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Clinton Essig of Sioux City; two daughters, Shelby and Nicole Essig, both of Sioux City; her mother-in-law, Ginger Simpson of Sioux City; two sisters and their husbands, Cherrie and Jay Wickey of Sioux City and Cindy and Donald "Hoss" Putzier of Pea Ridge, Ark.; two nieces, Tiffany Webb and Priscilla Putzier; nephews, Richard, Ryan, Robert and Ronald Wickey; as well as aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and DonnaLou Knutson; and a sister, Vivian Knutson.

William 'Bill' D. Butler

William "Bill" D. Butler, 69, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

William Deming Butler was born on Sept. 3, 1936, in Hornick, Iowa, the son of John and Hazel (Boyd) Butler. He graduated from Hornick High School in 1954. After graduation in 1954, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in Hawaii until 1957.

On Sunday, May 23, 1959, he married Diana Keairns. The couple spent most of their years in the Sioux City area. Bill spent his career designing restaurants and selling restaurant equipment. His work can be seen from coast to coast.

Bill loved fishing, the Sioux City Explorers, the Iowa Hawkeyes and spending time with his family.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 47 years, Diana; his five children and their spouses, Allen Butler and Mardi Hendricks and John and Kathy Butler, all of Sioux City, Elizabeth and Randy Kurth of Le Mars, Iowa, Connie and Bob Reynolds of Waterbury, Neb. and Bill and Kristi Butler of Dakota Dunes; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister and her husband, Beth and Roy Johnston of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Hazel Butler; four brothers, Clarence and Norris Nickolison, James Rodney Butler and John Boyd; and a sister, Jessie Zellmer.

Maxwell G. 'Max' Hills

SERGEANT BLUFF -- Maxwell G. "Max" Hills, 58, of Sergeant Bluff passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital after a year-long battle with lung cancer.

A gathering of family and friends will be held starting 7 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at his residence in Sergeant Bluff. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service.

Max was born May 24, 1947, in Australia. His parents died in an automobile accident during his teen years. Max traveled the world during his life. He was an adventurer, mining for gold and diamonds in Africa and opal gems in Australia. While in Africa, he worked for an agency of the United Nations, building refugee camps in West Africa.

Max met Terri Skinner in 1999. After a short courtship, they were married in January of 2000 in Sioux City. Max gambled, but his specialty was blackjack. If there was a blackjack tournament going, he and Terri would be there. He was an outdoors man, and loved to fish, and he fished most of the world's oceans. Max was heard to say, "Fishing can be done in this area but bass fishing is not quite like tuna and sailfish fishing." During the past few years, Max and/or Terri could be seen walking their dog, a black chow, named "Puppy Max" through the streets of Sergeant Bluff. Sadly, he died on January 3rd of this year.

Survivors include his wife, Terri; and the many friends he made throughout his life.

He lived the life of a thousand men. Everyday was just another exciting adventure and he was, without a doubt, one of the most interesting characters you could ever hope to meet. This world will miss his energy and excitement.

Paul H. High

HUBBARD, Neb. -- Paul H. High, 64, of Hubbard died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital.

Arrangements are pending with Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Russell D. Kroepel

LE MARS, Iowa -- Russell D. Kroepel, 67, of Le Mars, formerly of the Ireton, Iowa, area, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Todd Bunge of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden, Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Russell Dean Kroepel was born March 10, 1939, in Preston Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, to Otto and Anna (Frerichs) Kroepel. He attended country school near his home prior to graduating from high school in Ireton, Iowa, in 1957. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He later received his honorable discharge and returned to Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa and received his degree in pharmacology.

He and Margaret Brodie were married Sept. 3, 1972, in Las Vegas, Nev. He worked as a pharmacist in Arizona as well as several towns in Iowa. He retired from Family Pharmacy in Le Mars in October 2005.

In years past, he was active in Jaycees, Elks and Sertoma. He was presently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden, Iowa. He enjoyed work on his "hobby farm" and was an avid antique collector.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Margaret of Le Mars; a daughter and her husband, Katy and Brian Athens of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons and their wives, Tom and Kathy Kroepel of Shenandoah, Iowa, and Todd and Cindy McGranahan of Le Mars; six grandchildren, Todd Russell, Cory, Sarah, Ryan, Kelli and Sam; and a great-granddaughter, Melody Rose.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother and sister; and brothers, Melvin, Alfred and Harvey.

Donovan C. Heydon

PONCA, Neb. -- Donovan C. "Don" Heydon, 81, of Ponca died Monday, April 24, 2006, at his daughter's residence in Long Beach, Calif.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Monday in Ponca City Cemetery. Visitation will be noon until service time Monday at Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca.

Jeffery A. Zeitler

ONAWA, Iowa -- Jeffery A. "Jeff" Zeitler, 44, of Onawa, formerly of Sioux City, died suddenly Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at his residence.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be noon until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Rollin J. Tindall

AKRON, Iowa -- Rollin J. Tindall, 76, of rural Akron died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Le Mars, Iowa. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Merrill, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be after 3 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

Lloyd Newkirk

HARTLEY, Iowa -- Lloyd Newkirk, 76, of Hartley died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will be after 10 a.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Hartley Funeral Home.
