Ruth Kennedy

Ruth Kennedy of Sioux City died Saturday, April 22, 2006, at North Park Senior Living Center, where she had resided for about a year.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Logan Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Ruth was born Aug. 27, 1921, to Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Bedlington. She lived in Sioux City all her life, working briefly for Otis Elevator Company.

She was married to Robert Kennedy for 61 years, until his death.

Together, they were longtime supporters of the Humane Society and enjoyed a series of Dachshunds as family members over the years. They enjoyed several different residences in Sioux City. She was a loyal assistant in the resulting rehab projects taken on by Bob.

She is survived by four nieces, Ms. Laurie Bedlington of Kansas City, Mo., Ms. Nancy Bedlington and her husband, Dr. Robert Elkins of Overland Park, Kan. and their two daughters, Anne and Kathryn, Ms. Martha Bedlington of Seattle, Wash., and Ms. Robin Bedlington of Baltimore, Md.; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. E.J. McVeigh of Sarasota, Fla. She is also survived by a stepsister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Rasmussen of Arizona. In addition to family, she is survived by her longtime friend and original bridesmaid, Catherine Blomberg; and her very caring and thoughtful assistants, Tracy and Jackie.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Humane Society or a charity of your choice.

Eldon R. Emmick Sr.

Eldon R. Emmick Sr., 73, of Clear Lake, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at his residence.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Church of Christ in Clear Lake, with the Revs. Jim Allard and Alan Sheldon officiating. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Eldon was born Sept. 16, 1932, in Sioux City, the son of Robert Lee and Pearl Hazel (Pendelton) Emmick. He was raised on a family farm in Anthon, Iowa, with his grandmother, Emily Katherine Grabarski. He worked for Nutrena Feed in Sioux City, then with the Sioux City Fire Department from 1958 to 1963.

He married Ruby Gray on Oct. 31, 1950, in Elk Point, S.D. He did construction in Le Mars, Iowa. They moved to Clear Lake in 1977. Ruby died Oct. 26, 1980. He married Virginia "Ginny" Bowman on Sept. 5, 1981, in Onawa, Iowa. He later worked at Opportunity Village.

He loved hunting, fishing and was a history buff. He also enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Ginny Emmick of Clear Lake; his children and spouses, Raye and Denice Emmick of Jefferson, Iowa, Mary and Larry Butler of Des Moines, Marlene Emmick of Onawa, Iowa, Eldon and Tatya Emmick of Milo, Iowa, Bill and Triscia Bird of Leigh, Iowa, and Steve Bird of Onawa, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ruby; and a brother, Virgil Emmick.

Memorials may be given to the Eldon Emmick Sr. Memorial Fund.

Anthony H. Uhl Jr.

Anthony H. "Tony" Uhl Jr., 63, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Sioux City, died at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City.

Donald F. Nichols

Donald F. "Nick" Nichols, 87, of Sioux City died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at Embassy Rehab and Care Center in Sergeant Bluff following an extended illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Reserves. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Don was born Aug. 16, 1918, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of Roscoe and Clona (Cox) Nichols. He attended school in Sioux Falls. He enlisted into the U.S. Army, serving in Germany during World War II.

He married Dorothy B. Martin in July 23, 1946, in Elk Point, S.D. She preceded him in death on Sept. 8, 2004, in Sergeant Bluff.

Later, he worked for Salsness Buick in Sioux City for more than 30 years, retiring from there in 1981 as an assistant service manager.

He was a member of North Riverside Lodge 662, Sioux City Consistory, Abu Bekr Shrine, Abu Bekr Wrecking Crew, where he was a past president in 1976. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 777, where he was a 50-year member, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He enjoyed playing cards and loved traveling.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Gary and Annette Nichols of Sioux City and John and Vicki Nichols of Hastings, Neb.; four grandchildren, Martin James Nichols and his wife, Angela of Sioux City, Jon T. Nichols and his wife, Amanda of Sergeant Bluff, Dennis Nichols of California, and Sherri Savage of Hastings, Neb.; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Dennis and Robert.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Mark Martin, Randy Martin, Rick Martin, Tim Kacena, Jerry Scholl and Steve Scholl. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Abu Bekr Wrecking Crew.

Memorials are suggested to the Masonic Temple Association.

Mildred M. McKenzie

Mildred M. McKenzie, 91, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Kingman, Ariz. and Sioux City, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at a Las Vegas care facility.

Arrangements are pending with Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Warren E. Baker

CRAIG, Iowa -- Warren E. Baker, 78, of Hawarden, Iowa, formerly of the Craig area, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2006, at his residence.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig, with the Rev. Marvin Mueller officiating. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow the service Thursday prior to burial in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

Warren Everett Baker was born March 21, 1928, in Wolf Creek Township, near Moville, Iowa, to Kenneth and Clara (Struckbien) Baker. He attended country school near his family's farm Following his education, they moved south of Remsen, Iowa, where he assisted his family with farming.

On Aug. 4, 1951, he and Marvis Rexroat were united in marriage in Sioux City. The couple moved to the Craig area, where they farmed for many years. He also served in the Iowa Army National Guard based in Le Mars, Iowa. Marvis passed away July 8, 1990. He later moved to Hawarden for his retirement years.

He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig. He enjoyed camping and fishing as well as bowling and traveling. Winters were spent in Mexico, Florida, Texas and Arizona. He spent his summers in the Iowa Great Lakes area. He also was an avid follower of auctions and farm sales.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter and her husband, Joan and Grant Hayes of Warner Robins, Ga.; a son, Steven Baker of Hawarden; a son and his wife, Dan and Debbie Baker of Ireton, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Kristy and Dan Dullard of Waterloo, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband, Bob Meizner, Bobby and Andy Hayes, Eric Baker and his wife, Sarah, Sam and Dale Baker and Matthew Dullard; five great-grandchildren, Jacob and Noah Meizner, Trinity Hayes and Ethan and Reagan Baker; a special friend, Anne Bonestroo of Hull, Iowa; two sisters, Blanche Majeres of Le Mars and Viola and her husband, Joe Gengler, of Remsen, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Victor and Mae Baker of Kingsley, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marvis; a son, David; a daughter-in-law, Deborah; a sister, Bonnie Miesner; and two brothers, Clarence and Roscoe.

Emma Vanden Berg
2/27/1921 - Saturday, April 25, 2009

EMMA VANDEN BERG, 88, of Sioux Center, IA died Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center, IA.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 3PM at the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Mark Verbruggen officiating.

A graveside committal service will be held Wednesday at 2PM at Hope Cemetery of Hull, IA.

Visitation will be held Tuesday at the Memorial Funeral Home from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM.

The Vanden Berg Family prefers memorials to Dordt College.

Emma Vanden Berg was the fifth child born to Theodore and Pearl (Ikema) Vander Spoel. She was born in Hull, IA and attended the Hull Christian Grammar School and Hull Western Christian Academy. She continued her education at Iowa State and Westmar College working toward teaching credentials. She taught all the grades in a country school in Alvord, Iowa and she was the principal of the Doon Christian School.

On June 5, 1946, she married Jack Vanden Berg and for a few years they farmed near Boyden. After their son, Douglas Dean was born the family moved away from the farm and Jack began his career as an English teacher. During this time Emma worked at several libraries in Iowa and Michigan. When they returned to Sioux Center, Emma worked for many years in the Dordt College library.

She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center where she was the president of the Golden Hour Circle for several years. She also attended the Gleaners’ Forum Society.

She is survived by her son, Douglas of Sioux Center; sister Cecelia De Stigther of Escondido, CA; brother and sister-in-law, Arnold and Jackie Vander Spoel of Ft. Meyers Beach, FL; sister-in-law, Henrietta Brouwer of Hull, IA and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Vanden Berg; as well as her parents; one brother, Henry Vander Spoel; sister, Magdalene Vander Spoel; sisters and brothers-in-law, Coba and Art Vanden Brink, Gertrude and Al Van’t Hul; brother-in-law, Gilbert De Stigter; nephew, Allen Jay Brouwer and a niece Mary Lou Buys.

Emma was a devoted Christian wife and mother who lovingly cared for the husband and her son in times of illness. She is mourned by a host of family and friends.

Henry Van Regenmorter
8/25/1919 - Saturday, April 25, 2009

HENRY VAN REGENMORTER, 89, of Sioux Center, IA died Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10:30AM in the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center, with Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

Henry Van Regenmorter was born August 25, 1919 to Peter and Carrie Van Regenmorter of Sioux Center, Iowa. As a young boy he attended country school through the 6th grade.

He was joined in marriage to Cynthia Van Roekel on September 26, 1945 at her parent's home near Sioux Center. The couple began their marriage farming near Sioux Center. They later farmed near Rock Rapids, Struble and Maurice until moving to Sioux Center in 1971. He worked at Van's Poultry Farm and later drove the Regional Taxi until he retired. Henry loved his job as a taxi driver and was very dedicated to getting everyone where they needed to be on time.

His hobby and joy was to be in the basement with his wife, doing woodworking for his kids and grandkids or any one who could talk him into a project. He loved spending time with his family and always enjoyed having everyone together.

After Cynthia’s death in 2006, he moved to Kosgrove Estates where he enjoyed many good times around the family table.

Henry was a member of the Maurice First Reformed Church and was currently a member of the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center.

Henry is survived by three children and their spouses: Roger and Winova Van Regenmorter of Orange City, Darrel and Mick Van Regenmorter of Orange City and Karen and Bob Huenink of Alcester, SD; his son-in-law, Perry Dykstra of Le Mars; 10 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Bill and Aldine Van Regenmorter, Rich and Phyllis Van Regenmorter and sister, Wynn Vonk all of Sioux Center along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, Henry was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl Dykstra; infant granddaughter, Jill Huenink; his parents; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Jake and Carrie Van Regenmorter, Dick and Pearl Van Regenmorter and brother-in-law, Ben Vonk.

Bertha Franken
9/22/1911 - Wednesday, May 13, 2009

BERTHA FRANKEN, 97, of Sioux Center, IA died Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May16 at 10:30 AM at Bethel Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Duane Tinklenberg and Rev. John Lee officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Friday from 4-8 PM with the family present from 6:30-8 PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The Franken family prefers memorials be directed to Sioux Center Christian School.

Bertha (Engeltjes) Franken was born September 22, 1911, to Gerrit and Cornelja (Magre) Engeltjes in Elbrug, The Netherlands. She was one of eleven children. In 1920, her family left Holland on a two-week, cross-Atlantic trip, entering the United States at Ellis Island. As a young girl she worked in many homes doing housework and helping new mothers with their children.

On March 6, 1936, she married Dick Franken in Sioux Center. They farmed west of Sioux Center their entire married life. Dick passed away June 1, 1985. Bertha continued to help with chores on the farm until February 1995, when she made her residence at the New Homestead in Sioux Center. July 2008, she moved into Franken Manor. The last two weeks of her life she lived at Royale Meadows Care Center.

Bertha enjoyed working outdoors and also making quilts for family members and others. She loved to have her grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit.

Bertha was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church and enjoyed being a part of the Sunshine Circle for many years.

Bertha is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law: Arthur and Marlene, Gerald and Joanne, Dick Jr. and Faith all of Sioux Center; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law: Bernie and Betty Engeltjes of Leota, MN and Andy and Betty Engeltjes of Orange City; three sisters: Grace Van Roekel of Sioux Center, Marie and Gerrit Fedders of Sioux Center, Nellie and Bill Meyer of Sheldon; brother-in-law, Lewis Wynia of Sioux Center as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, young brother, Bernie Engeltjes; brothers and sisters-in-law: Lewis and Gertrude Engeltjes, and Henry and Wilma Engeltjes; sisters and brothers-in-law: Hattie and Fred Vollink and Fannie and Fred Van Dieren; brother-in-law, Tony Van Roekel. Also preceding Bertha in death from the Franken Family were: Alfred and Henrietta Franken, Jim and Nell Franken, Hermina Wynia and Elizabeth and Gerrit Van Maanen.
