Skyler Spangler

Skyler Star Spangler, 10 months, died at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Survivors include her mother, Nicole Spangler of Cedar Rapids; her father, William Browning of Burlington; grandparents, Lon and Barb Smith of Oquawka, Ill., Dan Spangler of Burnside, Ill., and Bill and Norma Browning of Englewood, Ohio; and her great–grandparents, Charles and Betty Connor of Good Hope, Ill., and Margie Spangler of Fountain Green, Ill.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, Ill.

The graveside service for Skyler Spangler will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Spangler Cemetery , near Fountain Green, with Robert Tillman officiating.

A memorial has been established for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Roland Kinzie

Roland E. Kinzie, 89, of Casa Grande, Ariz., formerly of Douds, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at Desert Valley Care Center in Casa Grande.

Born Oct. 22, 1914, on a farm near Augusta, he was the son of Bud L. and Martha Murphy Kinzie. On May 19, 1950, he married Hazel Jones Stagers in Columbia, Mo. She died Jan. 19, 1990.

He was a 1934 graduate of Douds High School.

He was a U. S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a 50–year member of John Hyson Reneker Post No. 494, American Legion.

Mr. Kinzie lived in Douds, many years in Waterloo, where he worked at the Rath Packing Co., in Hedrick and the past 14 years in Arizona.

Survivors include a step–daughter, Betty Topping of Ajo, Ariz.; three step–grandchildren; seven step great–grandchildren; three step great–great–grandchildren; two sisters, Anna Belthius of Phoenix, and Frances Lynch of Newhall.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Visitation will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, where family will receive friends between 7 and 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Kinzie will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Connie Markle officiating. Burial with military honors by John Hyson Reneker Post, American Legion will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery east of Douds.

A memorial has been established for the John Hyson Reneker Post, American Legion, which may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 308 Esperanza, Ajo, AZ 85321.

Mary Strawhacker

Mary F. Strawhacker, 84, of Bickford Cottage in Burlington, formerly of rural Mediapolis, died Friday night, Dec. 3, 2004, at her residence. Arrangements are pending at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis.

Gerry Sawyer

Gerry "Dean" Sawyer, 68, of Kahoka, Mo., died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at his home.

Born July 21, 1936, he was the son of Lesley LeRoy and Stelle Faye Weller Sawyer. On July 21, 1967, he married Betty Joann Bevans in Kahoka.

Mr. Sawyer was a cheese–maker at Kahoka Cheese Factory for 25 years.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Kahoka and Loyal Order of the Moose, which he was active in when it started in Kahoka. He enjoyed puzzles, fishing, and gardening. He loved mushrooming and picked a nine–inch morel at one time. He loved to cook and give away candy. He was known as the "Candyman."

Survivors include six daughters, Deena Ireland of Fort Madison, Tina Carrillow of Aliso Viejo, Calif., Mary Beth Magovsky of Kyle, Texas, Leisa Wilso of Loathe, Kan., JonAnn Danielson of Sequin, Texas, and Sherri Huffman of Newton; four stepchildren, Ronnie Gutting of Kahoka, Rhonda Gutting of Port St. John, Fla., Verle Gutting of Kahoka, Tony Gutting of Kahoka; five sisters, Virginia Johnson of Kahoka, Vera McGirl of Eldon, Delores Shannon and Darlean Mohr of Canton, Mo., and LeNora Davis of Memphis, Tenn., one brother, Gerald Sawyer of Kahoka; 26 grandchildren and three great–grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two half–brothers.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Kahoka, with the Rev. Rick Seaton officiating. Burial will be in Kahoka Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for First Baptist Church and Blessing Hospice in Quincy.

Kathleen Davis

Kathleen "Kaytee" Davis, 75, of Burlington, died at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born April 27, 1929, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Joseph H. and Ruth M. Gabriel Hemerling. On April 27, 1949, she married Ralph Edwin Davis in Burlington.

Mrs. Davis was a tax preparer with Walker & Egerton PC for 35 years.

She was a 1946 graduate of Burlington High School. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the Republican Party Des Moines County, Iowa State Central Republican Party, Des Moines County Historical Society and Des Moines County Humane Society. She was active in Planned Parenthood.

Survivors include her husband; three grandchildren; one sister, Betty Stanley of Burlington; one niece and five nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Prugh's Chapel.

The memorial service for Mrs. Davis will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Prugh's Chapel, with Pastor Carl Engstrom officiating. The body has been cremated. Private family burial in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery will be at a later date.

A memorial has been established.

Wayne Murphy

Wayne Ditto Murphy, 80, of Pleasant Hill, Tenn., formerly of the Monmouth, Ill., area, died early Sunday morning, Dec. 5, 2004, at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville, Tenn.

Born April 13, 1924, in Monmouth, he was the son of Loren E. and Besse B. Ditto Murphy. On May 18, 1945, he married Ezevel Elonis in Pottsville, Pa.

Mr. Murphy farmed in the Monmouth area from 1946 to 1964. He then worked as a parts man for Martin and Clark Implement Dealership in Monmouth from 1965 to 1981.

He was raised and educated in Monmouth, attending Monmouth public schools and graduating from high school there. He was a World War II Army veteran obtaining the rank of staff sergeant. He was a member and past post commander of Roseville American Legion Post 614. He also was a member of the Warren County Farm Bureau and served on the Regional Board of School Trustees. He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Carolyn Jeffries of Casselberry, Fla., and Janis Domesle of League City, Texas; seven grandchildren; six great–grandchildren; and two brothers, Lewis Murphy of Monmouth and Darrel Murphy of Peoria, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one brother.

Visitation will be Monday and Tuesday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

The funeral for Mr. Murphy will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Turnbull Funeral Home, with the Rev. William C. Myers officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the Warren County Cancer Fund and Warren County Library for Large Print Western and other fiction.

HELEN PAULUS

Funeral Services for Mrs. Helen Bernice Paulus will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church on Thursday, December 11, 2003, at 1:30 P.M. The Reverend Carl Engstrom will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 8:00 A.M. today. The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel on Wednesday evening from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. A memorial has been established for Bethany Lutheran Church.

Dallas Scott

The Mass of Christian Burial for Coast Guard Damage Controlman 2nd Class Dallas Scott, 29, who died Saturday, November 27, 2004, will be Saturday, December 11th, at 10:00 AM in St. John's Catholic Church. The Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf will be the celebrant. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery , Kingston. The U.S. Coast Guard Honor Guard of Washington, D.C., will conduct Military Rites. Friends may call after 8:00 AM on Friday, December 10th, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 PM. A memorial has been established.

Eloise I. Taylor

The private family funeral service for Mrs. Eloise I. Taylor, 88, of who died Monday, December 6, 2004, will be in Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Harry J. Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM on Friday, December 10th, in Lunning Chapel. The family will not be present. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the donor's choice of charity.

Wilma Smith

Wilma G. Kirkpatrick Asher Smith, 97, of West Point Care Center, died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

Born Aug. 1, 1907, in Kahoka, Mo., she was the daughter of Clark and Harriet Elizabeth Alsup Raines. She married Harry Kirkpatrick. She later married Arthur Asher. He preceded her in death. She then married Lester Smith. He also preceded her in death.

She attended the Methodist Church. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include five daughters, Analee Lockridge of Warrensburg, Mo., Mary Jo Griffin of Metropolis, Ill.; Judy Harding of Manchester, N.H., Linda Neff of Denmark and Connie Franklin of Burlington; one son, Larry Kirkpatrick of Davenport; 29 grandchildren; and several great– and great–great–grandchildren.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter and one son.

There will be no visitation. The body has been cremated.

A private family graveside service for Mrs. Smith will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Hofbauer–Schmitz–Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson is in charge of arrangements.

JOE VAN VELDHUIZEN

Funeral services for Joe Van Veldhuizen, 81, of Burlington who died on Wed–nesday, December 9, 2003, at Great River Medical Center will be held on Monday, December 15, 2003, at 10:00 A.M. at the Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley, Iowa. Rev. Milo Van Veldhuizen will officiate. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery , Rock Valley, Iowa. Graveside military rites will be conducted. Friends may call after 10:00 A.M. this morning until 8:00 P.M. and from 8:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. on Friday at Prugh's Chapel. The family will receive friends at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley from 7:00 until 9:00 P.M. on Sunday evening. A memorial has been established for the First Christian Church.

LOIS JEAN KOBS

Funeral services for Mrs. Lois Jean Kobs, 54, of Burlington who died at her home on Wednesday, December 10, 2003, will be held in Prugh's Chapel on Friday, December 12, 2003, at 2:00 P.M. Pastor Kendall Adams will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call at Prugh's Chapel on Thursday from 3:00 until 8:00 P.M. The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel one hour prior to the time of the service on Friday. A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society.

Bernard Orman

Bernard A. Orman, 66, of rural Floris, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, of complications from a heart attack.

Born Nov. 27, 1934, in Ottumwa, he was the son of Thomas and Beulah Leighton Orman. He married Norma Stone on Aug. 7, 1954, near Floris.
Mr. Orman was a heavy equipment operator, working on building construction for H. Eugene Smith Construction Co. in Mount Pleasant.

He was an active member of Bethel Worship Center, near Douds.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Bernard Orman Jr. of Macon, Mo.; two grandchildren; two sisters, Berniece Humphrey, his twin, of Union Grove, Wis., and Barbara Hawkins of Bloomfield; one stepbrother, Herman Orman of Toddville; and one stepsister, Phyllis Staub of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one sister and one stepbrother.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Orman will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Phil Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Leando Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for his church. Contributions may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 14157 Wheat Ave., Floria, IA 52560.
