Marilyn Kruid
10/25/1942 - Thursday, November 18, 2010

Marilyn Kruid, 68, of Maurice,Iowa died Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the Sanford Health Center of Sioux Falls, SD.

A visitation will be held Sunday at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center from 2-8PM with the family present from 2-4PM.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 10:30AM at the First Reformed Church of Maurice with Reverend Mark Haverdink officiating. Interment will follow the funeral service in Sherman Township Cemetery of Maurice.

In lieu of flowers the Kruid Family prefers memorials be directed to the Sioux County Relay for Life.

Marilyn Colleen Kruid was born October 25, 1942 to Case and Ethel (Kastein) Langstraat in Sioux Center, IA. She attended country school and graduated from Sioux Center Community School in 1960.

Marilyn was joined in marriage to Frank Kruid on August 23, 1961 at the Central Reformed church of Sioux Center. The couple lived in a variety of homes for the first few years of their marriage before moving to Maurice in 1965. To this union three sons were born: Brian Dale, Mark Franklin and Chad Henry. The Kruid’s opened their home to several foster children including Tom Buckley who continues to be a loved son, brother and uncle.

Over the years, Marilyn worked at a variety of different occupations. Her most current position was working as an accounts payable clerk for Advanced Brands LLC of Orange City.

Marilyn was a member of the Maurice First Reformed Church and enjoyed being involved in a variety of church activities. She also loved music and sewing. In her free time Marilyn spent time outdoors gardening, camping and fishing. She loved to bake chocolate chip cookies for her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Frank Kruid of Maurice; four sons: Brian (Vera) Kruid of Lennox, SD; Mark (Denise) Kruid of Midwest City, OK; Tom Buckley of Brooklyn, NY and Chad (Jodie) Kruid of Rock Valley, IA; seven grandchildren; brother: Clint (Ruth) Langstraat of Wellsville, KS; sister, Edna (Tim) Lawson of Greenville, IA; sister-in-law, Carol Langstraat of Hull, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents and a brother Hank Langstraat.

Dick Franken
11/16/1948 - Monday, November 29, 2010

Dick Franken, 62, of Sioux Center, IA died Monday, November 29, 2010, at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center, IA.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 5-7PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A funeral service will be held Thursday at 10:30AM at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. John Lee officiating. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

The Franken Family prefers memorials be directed to the Doornink-Brunsting Post 199, American Legion of Sioux Center or Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center.

Dick "Dickie" Franken, Jr. was born on November 16, 1948 to Dick and Bertha (Engeltjes) Franken in Sioux Center, IA. He grew up on a farm near Sioux Center and attended Sioux Center Christian School and Western Christian High School. He entered basic training at Fort Lewis, WA in 1968. Dick was stationed in Oklahoma and Georgia where he trained as a paratrooper. He then served as a clerk in Germany until his honorable discharge from active duty in May, 1970. He then served in the reserves until 1974.

After returning from Germany, Dick farmed with his family near Sioux Center. He then moved to Denver, CO where we worked for a large equipment company. When he returned to Sioux Center, he worked at various locations including Franken Implement, Sioux Automation Center, and The Muffler Shop. He married Faith Post on October 10, 1980 at Carmel Reformed Church. They moved to a farm near Sioux Center in 1983 where they raised their four daughters. He owned his own mechanic shop, a hog finishing building, and farmland.

Dick was a life time member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed bow hunting, farming, riding motorcycles, listening to Johnny Cash, assembling his own guns, raising pigs, and mechanic work. To his girls, he was a "jack of all trades". He was an active member of the Doornink-Brunsting Post 199, American Legion of Sioux Center. He served as post commander and as county commander. He was also a member of the veterans organization Forty and Eight.

Survivors are his wife of 30 years, Faith; daughters: Hope Franken of Sioux City, Becky and Brian Groeneweg of Sioux Center, Sarah Franken and fiancé John Zwier of Chicago, and Dana Franken of Sioux Center; two grandchildren, Noam and Maelyn Groeneweg; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Art and Marlene Franken, and Gerald and Joanne Franken, all of Sioux Center; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Deanne and Richard Van Zee of Rock Valley; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Darwin and Lorraine Post, and Warren and Fonda Post, all of Sioux Center; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Bertha Franken; parents-in-law, Walter and Henrietta Post.

Lawrence Wielenga
12/22/1919 - Thursday, December 02, 2010

Lawrence Wielenga, 90, of Sioux Center, IA died Thursday, December 2, 2010 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-8PM with the family present from 2-4PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A prayer service for family and friends will be held Monday at 10:00AM at Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00AM at Betel Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Duane Tinklenberg and Rev. John Lee officiating.

The Wielenga family prefer memorials be directed to: Sioux Center Home Health and Hospice.

Lawrence Harold Wielenga was born on Dec. 22, 1919 to Ring and Hendrena (Schalekamp) Wielenga near Boyden, Iowa. He grew up on the farm and attended country school. He was baptized and made profession of his faith at the Middleburg Free Grace Reformed Church.

Oct. 1, 1941, Lawrence married Mathilda (Tillie) Van Zee at her parents' home. They farmed near Doon and Newkirk before settling on their farm south of Hull. In September of 1983, they retired to Sioux Center. Lawrence and Tillie were blessed with 66 years of marriage. Tillie preceded Lawrence in death on Dec. 22, 2007. Lawrence made his home at Crown Pointe in February of 2009.

Lawrence was a member of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, Iowa where he served on numerous committees and as a deacon on the church council.

In his later years, Lawrence enjoyed woodworking and visiting with friends and relatives. He was a dedicated farmer who loved riding out to his sons' farms. He enjoyed going out for breakfast with his friend, Louis Wynia. Lawrence cherished the time he spent with his grandsons and great-granddaughters.

Left to cherish his memory are two sons and their wives: Rodney (Lois Van Voorst) Wielenga of Orange City, Iowa and Darrel (Lynn Landhuis) Wielenga of Hull, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Evan (Shondra) Wielenga of Hull, Bradley (Andrea) Wielenga of Orange City, Levi (Carol) Wielenga of Sioux City, Luke, Lorn, Lyle and Ladd Wielenga of Hull, and six great-granddaughters: Jenna, Haley, Jessica, Reese, Allison and Megan Wielenga; sister, Anna Mae Ver Steeg of Luverne, Minnesota; brother and sister-in-law, James and Ann Wielenga of Hull, Iowa; and brother-in-law, Anthony (Spike) Van Zee of Sheldon, Iowa.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife, Mathilda; parents and brother-in-law, Norman Ver Steeg.

Mary Burgers
3/24/1925 - Wednesday, December 22, 2010

Mary Burgers, 85 Hawarden, IA died Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at the Hudson Healthcare Center.

A visitation will be held Sunday from 2-6PM, with the family present from 2-4PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A prayer service for family and friends will be held Monday at 9:30AM at Memorial Funeral Home with interment to follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 11AM at the Carmel Reformed Church of rural Rock Valley with Rev. Mark Heijerman officiating.

The Burgers family prefers memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Mary Van Galen Burgers was born on March 24, 1925 to Herman and Hattie (Loverink) Van Galen in rural Rock Valley, IA. She grew up in the Inwood, IA area and attended country schools through the 8th grade and then worked on the family farm.

From 1943-1947 Mary moved west and lived in various locations. She lived and worked in California at a JCPenney store, in New Mexico at a tie factory, and in Colorado at a steel mill. She returned to Rock Valley and worked at Foppe’s General Store until she married.

Mary was united in marriage to Henry Anthony Burgers on January 27, 1948 at her parent’s home in Rock Valley. Mary and Henry lived and farmed by Lester, Rock Valley and Sioux Center, before moving to rural Hawarden in 1957. Mary resided on the farm until she entered the Hudson Healthcare Center on November 12, 2010.

Mary enjoyed writing letters, doing crossword puzzles, reading her Bible and devotionals. She loved spending time with her family and was a friend to everyone she met.

Mary is survived by a son, Gary of Hawarden; three daughters: Erma (Dennis) Christensen of Ruthven, IA; Marilyn (Bob) Top of Palisade, NE; and MaryAnn (Kelly) Zinnel of Hawarden; grandchildren and great grandchildren: Jason Preston and special friend Tracey Hemmert of Lake Park; Angela (Tim) Fisher and daughter, Peyton of Eagan, MN; Andy Preston of Lake Park; Cristi (Randy) Starling and their children: Trevor and Justin of Bellevue, NE; Eric Top of Omaha, NE and his children: Emma, Madison and Curtis of Hartford, SD; Luke (Erika) Top of Calahan, CO; Nic (Kara) Top of McCook, NE; Rita (Cory) Nagel and their children: Wesley, Rose and Will of George, IA; Tonia Ranchau and her children: Ethan, Traci, Ally, Alexis of Hawarden; Matt Zinnel of Hawarden; and Rachel Zinnel of Hawarden. Mary is also survived by two brothers-in-law: Anthony Burgers of LeMars, Henry VandenBrink of Rock Valley; sister-in-law, Winnie Kamminga of Crescent, IA as well as several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Henry on Oct 7, 1999; her parents; son-in-law, Steven Preston; two sisters: Margaret Van Holland and her husband Tony, and Evelyn VandenBrink, sister-in-law Helen Burgers and brother-in-law, Arnold Kamminga.

Anne Muether
12/21/1926 - Saturday, December 25, 2010

Anne Muether, 84, of Sioux Center, IA died Saturday, December 25, 2010 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

Visitation hours will be held Tuesday from 4-8, with the family present from 6-8PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A prayer service for family and friends will be held Wednesday at 10AM at Faith Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11:00AM at Faith Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center, with Rev. Bernie Haan and Rev. Charles Muether officiating.

Anne Lawrence Nicholas was born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 21, 1926 to George and Mary (Bayard) Nicholas. Anne was raised in various communities along the East Coast. She attended St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in Manhattan. On December 8, 1947 she became a Christian through the testimony of a fellow nurse and the Word (Galatians 2:20).

In 1948, Anne took business courses and accepted a position as secretary in the Physics Department at Princeton University. There on September 26, 1949 she met her future husband a Ph.D candidate, Herbert Muether. Anne and Herbert were married in 1951. They joined the Orthodox Presbyterian Church where Anne would serve faithfully for over fifty years as encourager, prayer warrior, teacher and an elder’s wife. The couple was blessed with six children.

On December 24, 2005, her husband of fifty-four years passed away. Anne moved to Sioux Center, Iowa, where she enjoyed five years of gracious Midwest living, embraced by a loving community with many new neighbors and friends.

Anne loved reading and studying the Word, the works of John Calvin and such Puritan writers as Jonathan Edwards and John Owens.

Anne is survived by her children and grandchildren: William and Diane (Huizenga) Muether of Janesville, WI and their children (Patricia, Robert and William), Herbert and Elizabeth (Reuter) Muether of Seldon, NY and their children (Steven and Katharine), John and Kathryn (Patten) Muether of Oviedo, FL and their children (Timothy, Joy Veldkamp and husband, David, Anne and William), Mary and Joe Dirksen of Sioux Center and their children (Benjamin, Joseph and Gail), Charles and Kristie (Klyn) Muether of Pella, IA and their children (Alexandria and Tatiana), Rebecca and David Vander Werf of Sioux Center and their children (Abigail, Jonathan and Sarah).

In addition to her husband, Anne was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Bayard Nicholas.

Richard Oostra
12/19/1916 - Monday, December 27, 2010

Richard Oostra, 94, of Sioux Center died Monday, December 27, 2010 at the Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 4-8PM with the family present from 5-7PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A prayer service for family and friends will be held Friday December 31, 2010 at 9:15AM at Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with interment to follow in Hope Cemetery of Hull.

A memorial service will be held Friday December 31, 2010 at 11AM at the Bethel Reformed Church with Rev. Duane Tinklenberg and Rev. John Hilbelink officiating.

Riender (Richard) Oostra was born on December 19, 1916, on the family farm north of Hull, Iowa to John and Kate (Van Surksum) Oostra. Richard was the oldest of 13 children. Richard spent his childhood days in the Hull and Doon area working on family farms.

On August 27, 1940, he married Geraldine Niezink. They made their home in the Sioux Center area. Richard worked for Sioux Center Coop Gas and Oil before starting his trucking business. Later he worked at the Sioux Center Coop Elevator and Lumber Yard. He was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church where he served on the consistory. Richard loved raising livestock, gardening and growing flowers on the farm near Sioux Center.

Richard is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Rev. John R. Hilbelink of Rockford, Illinois; two sons and daughters-in-law: Larry and Twila Oostra of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Dr. Randy and Barb Oostra of Holland, Ohio; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters: Mary Grooters of Hull, Ruth Van Engen of Sioux Center; four brothers and sisters-in law: William John and Lois Oostra of Winneconne, Wisconsin, Jacob and Teresa Oostra of Rock Valley, Andrew and Wilmina Oostra of Rock Valley and Robert and Muriel Oostra of Hull; sisters-in-law, Marge Niezink of Hudsonville, Michigan and Alice Oostra, of Lynden, Washington as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Geraldine; an infant son; an infant great-grandchild; sister and brother-in-law, Berdina and Gerrit Van Maanen; five brothers: Andrew Oostra, Marinus Oostra, John Oostra and his wife Liz, Ralph Oostra and his wife Cynthia, Gerald Oostra and his wife Gertrude; two brothers-in-law: Gerrit Van Engen and Bernard Niezink and sister-in-law, Johanna Vis and her husband Henry.

Myna De Stigter

Myna De Stigter, 86, of Sioux Center died Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

Visitation will be held Monday January 3, 2011 from 4-8PM with the family present from 5:30PM -7:30PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A prayer service for family and friends will be held Tuesday at 10:00AM at the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday at 11AM at First Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Carl Klompien officiating.

The De Stigter family prefers memorials to Sioux Center Christian Schools or Western Christian High School.

Myna De Stigter was born March 9, 1924 to Henry P. and Winnie (Van Maanen) Vis south of Hull, Iowa. She attended Perkins Christian School for seven years before graduating from Hull Christian School.

On May 19, 1948, Myna was joined in marriage to Peter De Stigter in Hull.

Myna was a longtime member of First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. She was a part of the Golden Hour women’s group. Her family remembers her as one of the first to start making pig-in-a-blanket. Myna enjoyed crocheting, baking and canning the many items from her garden.

Left to cherish her memory are seven children and their spouses: Harlan and Jolene De Stigter of Orange City; Ronald De Stigter of Canton, SD; Winette and John Mc Ewen of Smithers, British Colum¬bia; Jerome De Stigter of Sioux Center; Berwyn and Beth De Stigter of Lennox, SD; Douglas and Lorie De Stigter of Sioux Center and Beverly and Robin Miller of Gilbert, AZ; sixteen grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Evelyn Vis of Sioux Center; sister-in-law, Louise Vis of Rock Rapids; brother-in-law, Bernard Stuit of Ripon, CA. Also left to cherish her memory are: brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Leonard and Ella De Stigter of Sioux Center, Case and Penny De Stigter of Livonia, MI, sisters-in-law: Cecilia De Stigter of Escondido, CA, Florence Kalsbeek of Orange City and Elaine De Stigter of Grand Rapids, MI; Lucille Poel and her husband Norm of Grand Rapids, Ml as well as numerous nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter De Stigter; her parents; one great-grandchild, Kelcee Renae De Stigter; two brothers: Peter Vis and Bert Vis and a sister Hendrene Stuit.
