Gerrit H. Rozeboom
5/7/1926 - Monday, January 03, 2011

Gerrit H. Rozeboom, 84, of Sioux Center, IA died Monday, January 3, 2011 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 5-7PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A prayer service for family and friends will be held Thursday at 10:15AM at First Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11AM at the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating.

The Rozeboom family prefers memorials be directed to the Sight & Sound Ministry of First Reformed Church.

Gerrit Henry Rozeboom was born May 7, 1926, to John and Anna (Kruizenga) Rozeboom at the family farm near Sioux Center, Iowa. He attended country school in Welcome Township. Gerrit married Kathleen Van Rooyen on May 18, 1949, in Orange City, Iowa. Gerrit and Kathleen spent their lives farming on the Rozeboom Homestead. They retired to Sioux Center in 2004.

Gerrit was a lifelong member of First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. He enjoyed his life on the farm, raising cattle and crops and riding horses. Gerrit also enjoyed his large family of kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids, and his sense of humor was always evident.

Gerrit is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathleen; six children: Linda (Rich) McCoy of Bluffton, OH, Stan (Cherilyn) Rozeboom of Sioux Center, IA, Verlyn (Deb) Rozeboom of Sioux Center, IA, Karen (David) Vollmar of Pella, IA, Arlyn (Beth) Rozeboom of Sioux Center, IA, and Galen (Chris) Rozeboom of Sioux Center, IA; a son-in-law, Jim Vander Stoep of Oak Harbor, WA; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren; brother, Bud (Gert) Rozeboom of Sioux Center; sister, Eldine Wagner of Sun City, AZ; sisters-in-law, Irene Pennings, Leora (Leland) De Haan and brother-in-law, Jack (Willie) Van Rooyen all of Orange City as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Gerrit was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Rozeboom; a daughter, Janice Vander Stoep; two infant grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Dick Van Wyk; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Dubb Rozeboom and Dick and Judy Rozeboom; his parents-in-law, Walter and Nellie Van Rooyen; brother-in-law, Gerrit Pennings, and sister-in-law, Marie Van Rooyen.

Helen Bos

Helen Bos, 72, of Sioux Center, IA died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 peacefully at her home.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A prayer service for family and friends will be held Friday at 10:00AM at the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 11AM at First Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Carl Klompien officiating.

The Bos Family prefer memorials be directed to Dordt College or Hospice of Sioux Center.

Helen J. Bos was born May 12, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, to Gerrit and Jennie (Hulst) De Vries. She graduated from South Christian High in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Helen married Abraham Bos on August 9, 1957, in Grand Rapids. She worked 14 years as a Congregate Meals Manager and most recently volunteered as secretary for the Regency Board of Directors.

Helen enjoyed reading, cooking and going on trips with her children and grandchildren.

Helen is survived by her husband, Abe Bos of Sioux Center; four children: Dawn and Tim Goslinga of Lake Worth, FL; Jim and Glenda Bos of Sioux Center; Mary and Roland Ritzema of Waupun, WI; and Matt and Teri Bos of Orange City; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Barb De Vries of Grand Rapids, MI; sister and brother-in-law, Eunice and Don Buning of Jenison, MI; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bruce and June Klanderman of Grand Rapids, MI; sister-in-law, Marge Bos of Seal Beach, CA as well as many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Ruth Bos; brother-in-law, Ralph Bos and sister-in-law, Alice Klanderman.

Peter G. Mouw

Peter G. Mouw, 84, of Sioux Center, IA died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at a Sioux Falls Hospital.

A visitation will be held Friday from 4-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A prayer service for family and friends will be held Saturday at 1:30PM at the First Christian Reformed church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2:30PM at First Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Carl Klompien officiating.

The Mouw family prefer memorials be directed to Sioux Center Christian School or Sioux Center Community Hospital Foundation.

Peter G. Mouw, son of Ben and Hattie (Ramaker) Mouw was born January 18, 1926 in Sioux Center, Iowa.

He was married to Freda (De Zeeuw) on February 20, 1948.

Pete is survived by five children and their spouses: Barry and Susan Mouw, Jeffrey Mouw, Lynne and Al Bloemendaal, Steve and Peg Mouw and Kallen Bruce Mouw; 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Pete is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law: Harold and Marge Mouw, Dr. Orvin and Ernestine Mouw; sister and brother-in-law, Faye and Vern Huisman; two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Mouw and Wilma Mouw; sister-in-law, Frances Schuiteman; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Edith and Herman Sietstra and brother-in-law, Adrian Punt.

Pete was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Freda Mouw on January 28, 2010; four infant children: David, Laura, Kallen and Thomas; his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Virginia Mouw; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Berniece and Ed Rozeboom, Madeline and Gerrit Gesink; two brothers: Lawrence Mouw and Calvin Mouw; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Doris and Herman Harmelink and Joan and Andrew Brenneman; sister-in-law, Gertrude Punt and brother-in-law, Arthur J. Schuiteman.

Esther M. Vermeer
10/5/1921 - Monday, January 03, 2011

Esther M. Vermeer, 89, of Moses Lake, Washington, formerly of Sioux Center and Ireton, IA, passed away Monday, Jan. 3, 2011 at the Monroe House of Moses Lake.

A visitation will be held Saturday from 9:30AM to 10:30AM at First Reformed Church of Sioux Center, IA, followed by a funeral service beginning at 10:30AM in the chapel of First Reformed Church with Rev. Doug Van Aartsen officiating. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Esther Vermeer was born to Andrew and Alida (Berghuis) De Zeeuw on October 5, 1921 at the family home on the farm 3 ¾ miles from Sioux Center. She attended school at Plato No. 8. She graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1939. On June 6, 1939 she married Gerrit E. Vermeer. They lived on the family farm east of Sioux Center. They had five beautiful children, Marilyn Faye, Maxine Beth, Iva Jean, Everett Gale and Don Lee. Esther and Gerrit moved to Lynden, Washington in 1960, where they lived for 30 years. Then due to various circumstances she moved around ending up in Ireton, Iowa from 2000 to 2008. She returned to Eastern Washington after the death of her oldest child to be closer to her three children.

Esther was active in 4-H, church work, women’s bible study and was president of Woman’s Classis of the Cascades (with the First Reformed Church in Lynden) for several years. She loved her role as mother, wife and homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, canning, and baking and would share it with her family and friends. Fellowship time with family, neighbors and friends was always a highlight. In their later years, Esther and Gerrit enjoyed camping in British Columbia.

Above all else, Esther loved the Lord dearly.

She is survived by four children: Maxine Beth (Dave) Richner of Warden, WA, Iva Jean (Larry) Vander Giessen of Moses Lake, WA, Everett Gale (Candy) Vermeer of Quincy, WA, and Don Lee Vermeer of Le Mars; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth (Jake) De Jong of Spirit Lake; two brothers, John (Ella) De Zeeuw of Hull and Earl (Lila) De Zeeuw of Orion, IL.

In addition to her parents and husband, Esther was preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn (Kenneth) Gradert, two sisters: Vera Taylor and Norma Vander Berg, one brother, Roger DeZeeuw.

OTTO BOUMA

Mr. Otto Bouma, age 90, of Hull, passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2007, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, April 18, at 11:00am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Paul Hansen and the Rev. Carl Klompien will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a prayer service on Wednesday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, at the funeral home.

Otto was born on February 14, 1917, at Hull, the son of Bert and Mary (Gritters) Bouma. When he was a teenager, his family lived at Martin, South Dakota, for a few years. Otherwise, he was a lifetime resident of Hull.

On December 18, 1940, he married Harriet Marie Koele at Hull, where they farmed most of their life. In 1963, they moved into Hull. Harriet passed away on April 5, 1996, in Sioux Center.

In February of 2005, Mr. Bouma became a resident of Pleasant Acres.

He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where he had served on the consistory. He had also been on the board of directors of the Hull Christian Elementary School.

Otto thoroughly enjoyed farming, and he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his son and his wife, Loren and Gaylene Bouma, of Hull; five grandchildren, Lynnae Bouma, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Stephanie, and her husband, Sean Baccam, of Hull; Alisa, and her husband, Todd Visser, of Rock Valley; Kara Bouma, of Edgerton, Minnesota; and Brian Bouma, of Hull, and his fiance', Shannon Huitsing; five great-grandchildren, Christopher, Logan, and Braden Baccam; and Madison and Teagen Visser; and a sister, Hattie Te Grotenhuis, of Sioux Center.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Marla Bouma; two brothers, Peter and John Bouma; and four sisters, Della Krommendyk, Bertha Van Surksum, Gertrude Moss, and Jeanette Van Beek.

Memorials may be directed to the Hull Christian Elementary and Western Christian High School Foundations or Hope Haven.

JEANNETT BYLSMA

Mrs. Jeannett Bylsma, age 87, of Orange City, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, March 16, at 10:00am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Timothy Ouwinga will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Jeannett was born on August 27, 1919, in rural Hull, the daughter of Ike and Grace (De Zeeuw) De Jong. She was raised at Perkins and Orange City, where she graduated from the Christian School.

On June 27, 1945, she married Peter Bylsma in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where she was a homemaker. She also did housekeeping and was employed at the De Jong Hatchery, Dutch Oven Bakery, Hope Haven Residential Training Center, and Twilight Motel. In June of 2006, they became residents of the Heritage House, where he passed away on September 16, after more than 61 years of marriage.

Mrs. Bylsma was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where she participated in the Faith, Hope, and Love Society. She also belonged to the Monica Society and the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Auxiliary.

Mr. and Mrs. Bylsma were faithful visitors to the sick and shut-ins. She assisted her family in providing holiday flag service for the Orange City businesses for many years.

She enjoyed crocheting, boating, traveling, working puzzles and puzzle books, and growing plants and flowers. She also liked spending time at their lake cabin.

Jeannett will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister, and friend. She gave a piece of her heart to all she met.

Survivors include her six children, Arlin Bylsma, and his wife, Lorna, of Orange City; Gloria, and her husband, Dennis Alberta, of Caledonia, Michigan; Marilyn Alcantar, of South Sioux City, Nebraska; Merlin Bylsma, and his wife, Holly, of Belgrade, Montana; Edith, and her husband, Donald Owens, of Hospers; and Yvette, and her husband, Randy Feekes, of Archer; 27 grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nelle Hengeveld, of Sioux Center; and Irene, and her husband, Henry Smeenk, of Grandville, Michigan; two sisters-in-law, Tena De Jong and Retta De Jong, both of Orange City; and a foster son and his wife, Jerry and Mary Owings, of Sioux City, and their family.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Henrietta, and her husband, Jake Mantel; Elsie, and her husband, Tim Bruxvoort; and Gertrude De Jong; two brothers, Tom De Jong and Gilbert De Jong; and a brother-in-law, Ted Hengeveld.

Memorials will be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice and the Orange City Christian School.

CORNELIUS A. DE GROOT

Mr. Cornelius De Groot, age 86, of Alton, passed away on Sunday, February 25, 2007 at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.

There will be a funeral service on Thursday, March 1, at 10:00am, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Heilman will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Cornelius was born on August 22, 1920, near Doon, the son of Abraham and Jennie (Koel) De Groot. He was raised in rural Sioux Center, where he attended country school, and he received an honorable discharge from the United States Navy during World War II.

On January 26, 1949, he married Eleanor Jasper in Ireton. They made their home in Sioux County, where he enjoyed farming at Alton most of his life. He was also employed as a tractor mechanic.

“Cornie” was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church, where he had served on the consistory as a deacon.

He liked reading and working with mechanical things. He loved spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of more than 58 years; four children, Larry De Groot, of Zeeland, Michigan; Rodney De Groot, and his wife, Sondra, of Orange City; Denise, and her husband Terry Plagman, of Runnells, Iowa; and Arlin De Groot, and his wife, Lisa, of Boise, Idaho; ten grandchildren, Lori, and her husband, Gordon Steenwyk; Rachael, and her husband, Kevin Kouw; Michael De Groot; Mark De Groot; Kim, and her husband, Brad Hettinga; Paula, and her husband, Ashley Mayland; Grant De Groot, and his fiance, Heidi Van Dam; Greg De Groot; Katie De Groot; and Erin De Groot; six great-grandchildren; a brother, John De Groot, of Orange City; and five sisters, Anna Kroon, of Orange City; Dirkje “Marie” De Weerd, of George; Lena Fedders, of Sioux Center; Gertrude Vis, of Rock Valley; and Edna Vande Broek, of Maurice.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Abraham, Jr., De Groot; and a sister, Jacoba De Weerd.

JEANETTE DE JONG

Miss Jeanette “Janet” De Jong, age 72, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2007 at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There will be a funeral service on Thursday, March 22, at 2:30pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. Todd Zuidema will officiate. Interment will follow at the Sherman Township Cemetery, near Maurice. Visitation with the family will be the hour before the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Jeanette was born on September 11, 1934, at Maurice, the daughter of Otto and Susie (Postma) De Jong. She was raised at Maurice, where she attended elementary school.

As an adult, she did housekeeping and helped her parents with their custodial duties at the First Reformed Church in Maurice. She enjoyed children and also did much babysitting.

After the death of her mother, she became associated with Hope Haven. There she became known as Janet and was employed in their sheltered workshops. She lived at the Residential Training Center in Orange City and later at a group home in Sioux Center.

On July 11, 2001, she moved to the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

She was a member of the Hope Christian Reformed Church in Hull.

Survivors include her niece, Debra Dekker, of Bowie, Maryland; and a nephew, Wendell Dekker, of Hospers.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister and her husband, Clarissa and Gerrit Dekker; and two brothers in childhood, Wendell and Laurence De Jong.
