She was born Trijntje Dragstra on April 22nd, 1913, in Oldeboorn, Friesland, The Netherlands, and emigrated to the United States with her parents at the age of 10 months. She was raised on farms in the Springfield, South Dakota area, and she attended country schools through the eighth grade. At the age of 20, Tena moved to Orange City and was employed as a housekeeper for various families.

In 1941, Tena became engaged to Tom I. De Jong of Orange City. While he was in the Army Air Corps during World War II, she relocated to Lynden, Washington, to be nearer to his base. She worked as an egg candler in Bellingham during this time. They were married in Orange City on December 5, 1945, shortly after Tom was discharged from the service.

After Tom went to be with the Lord on May 2nd, 1998, Tena continued to live in the family home until November, 2006, enjoying her hobbies and visits from family, especially sisters and sisters-in-law and special friends, including Frances Kohl and Florence Driesen.
