LOIS HECTOR

Mrs. Lois Hector, age 82, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, June 7, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, June 12, at 10:30am, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Jon Nelson will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Lois Marian was born on July 4, 1924, at Orange City, the daughter of Henry and Dena (Rexwinkel) Muyskens. She was raised at Orange City, where she attended Northwestern Junior College. She then was a school teacher in Onawa and Le Mars for a year each. She then moved to Holland, Michigan, where she graduated from Hope College. There she met the Rev. Robert Hector, whom she married on June 16, 1949, at the Trinity Reformed Church.

They pastored Reformed churches in Slayton, Minnesota; Chicago, Illinois; Prairie City, Iowa; Friesland, Wisconsin; Venice, Florida; and Middleburg, Iowa. At all of the churches, she was a partner with her husband, often serving as president of the women's organizations. In semi-retirement, they returned to Orange City. In early September of 2005, she became a resident of the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility. After more than 57 years of marriage, “Bob” passed away on December 22, 2006, in Orange City.

Lois was currently a member of the Trinity Reformed Church. Over the years, she served on several denominational committees and was active in the World Home Bible League. She served as a substitute teacher and tutored migrant workers. She was known for her faithful telephone calls to church members on their birthdays and anniversaries.

The Rev. and Mrs. Hector were the host family for a Northwestern College student from China and for most of their married life, they supported a child through World Vision. They enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include her four children, Carol Braaksma, of Orange City; David Hector, and his wife, Miriam, of Le Mars; Mary, and her husband, the Rev. Donald Orange, of Greeley, Colorado; and Janice, and her husband, Jeff Fox, of Perry; five grandchildren, Karlton Hector, and his wife, Jana; Craig Hector; John Braaksma; Daniel Orange; and Andrea Orange; two brothers and their wives, Paul and Pat Muyskens, of Orange City; and the Rev. Joseph and Jean Muyskens, of Homewood, Illinois; and two brothers-in-law, the Rev. John Maassen, of Venice, Florida; and Harold “Booty” Hector, and his wife, Marlys, of Mesa, Arizona.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Harriet Maassen.

Memorials may be directed to Latin American Christian Ministries.

DAVID T. HERDA

Mr. David Herda, age 50, of Alton, passed away on Wednesday, June 13, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital, of injuries received in a construction accident in Sioux Center.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, June 16, at 10:30am, at the Alton Reformed Church. The Rev. David Daumer will officiate. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

David Thomas was born On April 10, 1957, in Rock Rapids, the son of Joseph Thomas and Ailene Mae (Heidebrink) Herda. He was raised at Rock Rapids, where he graduated from the Central Lyon High School.

On March 26, 1976, he married Brenda Renae Ranschau in Rock Rapids. They lived in Rock Rapids a short time and then moved to Alton, where they have since made their home.

Dave was a production manager at American Identity in Orange City until 2005, when he became employed by Siouxland Masonry in Alton.

Mr. Herda was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Orange City.

He enjoyed fishing, carpentry, stock car racing at the Rock Rapids Speedway, NASCAR, being outdoors, and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda; two sons and their wives, Nicholas and Leah Herda, of Alton; and Andrew and Jessica Herda, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; his parents, Joe and Ailene Herda, of Hospers; two brothers, Doug Herda, of Rock Rapids; and Mark Herda, of Spencer; two sisters, Lori Mars, of Orange City; and Peggy Bursch, of Buffalo, Minnesota; his mother-in-law, Nora Ranschau, of Rock Rapids; many nephews and nieces; and his “grandpuppy”, Tess.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Carl Ranschau; and his grandparents, Gerk and Kathryn Heidebrink and Frank and Albina Miller.

GERALD J. HUISMAN

Mr. Gerald Huisman, age 69, of Hospers, passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2007 at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.

There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, March 21, at 1:30pm, at the Newkirk Reformed Church, rural Hospers. The Rev. Dennis Hietbrink will officiate. Interment will follow at the Newkirk Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 7:30pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Gerald Jacob was born on November 7, 1937, in Hudson, South Dakota, the son of Herbert M. and Kate (Van Rooyen) Huisman. He was raised in the Rock Valley and Lebanon areas.

On March 6, 1958, he married Greta May Koldenhoven in Orange City. They first made their home at Rock Valley. From 1960 to 1964, he served in the United States Air Force at the beginning of the Vietnam Conflict. After his discharge, they returned to Rock Valley and also farmed at Newkirk, Iowa. They then moved to Newkirk, Oklahoma, where he was a truck driver. He was also a motel manager in Oklahoma, Texas, and Minnesota. In 2002, they moved to Hospers, where he was employed at the Farm Service Shop and at Aalbers and Niichel Excavating and Trucking in Alton.

“Jerry” was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where he served as assistant Sunday school superintendent, attended the men's brotherhood, and belonged to the pastoral search committee. He enjoyed woodworking and working on mechanical things, especially engines.

Survivors include his wife of more than 49 years; three children, Ashley Huisman, of Stewartville, Minnesota; Bradley Huisman, and his wife, Linda, of Caney, Kansas; and Sara, and her husband, the Rev. Erik Ederma, of Middletown, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Joshua and Makenzie Huisman and Micah and Jonah Ederma; three step-grandchildren, Brandon, Jennifer, and Rachel Thompson; two step-great-grandchildren, Canaan and Bradon; four sisters, Edith, and her husband, David Kuiken, of Maurice; Janet, and her husband, Donald De Groot, of Hull; Harriet Kleinhesselink, of Orange City; and Wilma, and her husband, Stanley De Boom, of Sioux Center; and a sister-in-law, Gertrude Huisman, of Rock Valley.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Matthew Huisman; a sister and her husband, Mina and Sam Renes; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Kleinhesselink.

MARY HUISMAN

Mrs. Mary Huisman, age 53, of Boyden, was called by Jesus to be with him at home in heaven on Friday, May 18, at her residence.

There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, May 22, at 2:00pm, at the United Presbyterian Church in Boyden. The Rev. James Burnette will officiate. Visitation with the family will be the half hour before the service on Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Mary was born on February 1, 1954, in Sheldon, the daughter of William and Barbara (Johannes) Seivert. She was raised on a farm near Ashton. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Ashton and graduated from the Sheldon High School.

On June 9, 1972, she married Terry Huisman at the Parkview Assembly of God in Sheldon. They made their home in Sheldon until 2005, when they moved to Boyden.

Her first employment was as a waitress at Smily's in Ashton. As an adult, she had many community service positions, including being a pre-school teacher's aide, a hostess at the Crown Fork in Sheldon, and a 911 dispatcher for the City of Sheldon. She was also an owner and operator of Huisman Aquatics in Sheldon. Currently, she was a corrections officer at the Sioux County Sheriff's Office in Orange City.

Mary spent her life devoted to the service of her Savior, Jesus the Christ. She was active in her church, where she taught a Sunday school class and volunteered wherever else she could be used. She was also involved in the community, especially with those in need. She had participated in the girl scouts and the teen scene, as well as at the high school as a chaperone.

Mary enjoyed raising her children, playing with her grandchildren, playing cards and board games, especially Zuma, baking cookies, raising plants, and spending time with her sister, Anita. Her favorite job was being a full-time mother, and she was proud of her three wonderful, productive children.

Survivors include her husband of almost 35 years, Terry; a son and his wife, Benjamin and Katie Huisman, of Eaton Rapids, Michigan; two daughters and their husbands, Angela and Eric Burnette, of Hartley; and Melissa and Chad Adams, of Castle Rock, Colorado; eight grandchildren, Greg, Rachel, and Megan Huisman; Gretchen, Emily, and Jonathan Burnette; and Corbin and Caleb Adams; her mother, Barbara Seivert, of Ashton; two sisters and their husbands, Anita and E. J. Poss, of Omaha, Nebraska; and Janet and Kent Lohrenz, of Sheldon; a brother and his wife, Daryl and Dana Seivert, of Newell; a sister-in-law, Monica Seivert, of Sheldon; her husband's parents, Don and Lynda Huisman, of Sheldon; and her husband's two sisters, Jan Huisman, of Coconut Creek, Florida; and Jeri, and her husband, Mark Postma, of Sheldon.

She was preceded in death by her father, “Willie” Seivert, and a brother, Dennis Seivert.

The family requests that all memorials be directed to Operation Serve International (c/o the family), an organization that provides medicines, food, clothing, etc., to the poor and homeless in foreign countries. In the near future, a missions trip to Mexico City, Mexico, will be taken in honor of Mary.

PETER KLEINWOLTERINK

Mr. Peter Kleinwolterink, age 96, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, at the Westwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sioux City.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, June 8, at 1:30pm, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Ter Beest will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Peter was born on December 1, 1910, at Orange City, the son of Henry John and Dena (Bonnema) Kleinwolterink. He was raised at Orange City and Sioux Center.

In 1938, he married Genevieve Schalekamp at Orange City. They farmed at Orange City until 1967, when they moved into town. Genevieve passed away in November of 1968 in Sioux City.

On October 1, 1969, Pete married Margaret Dorothy Moret Bynes in Orange City. From 1971 to 1975, they lived in Boyden, where they operated the Boyden Grocery Store. They then moved to Orange City, where they managed the Pioneer Memorial Home until 1980, when they retired. Dorothy passed away on April 3, 2000, in Orange City.

In January of 2006, he moved to Sioux City. Since February 6 of this year, he has been a resident of Westwood.

Mr. Kleinwolterink was a member of the First Reformed Church. He enjoyed having coffee with his relatives and friends, traveling, fishing, and playing cards.

Survivors include his son and his wife, Rodney and Rose-Marie Kleinwolterink, of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Judy and Kenneth Rawlings, of River Falls, Wisconsin; a step-daughter and her husband, Louetta and Ronald Van Meekeren, of Sheldon; a step-son and his wife, James and Barbara Bynes, of Hull; seven grandchildren, Laura, and her husband, Bijan Vujosevic; Christopher Rawlings, and his wife, Rene'; Lisa, and her husband, Steve Antrim; Ryan Van Meekeren, and his wife, Emily; Sara, and her husband, Scott Grevengoed; Craig Bynes; and Chad Bynes, and his wife, Amber; a grandson-in-law, Randy Goglin; eight great-grandchildren, Nikolas Vujosevic, Craig and Joshua Goglin; Chicago, Micah, and Mercedes, Van Meekeren; and Mackelle and Ashyln Grevengoed; and two brothers, Harold Kleinwolterink, of Sioux Center; and Warren Kleinwolterink, and his wife, Jo, of Orange City.

In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stephanie Goglin; two brothers and their wives, John and Lorraine Kleinwolterink and Alvin and Marjorie Kleinwolterink; a sister and her husband, Johanna and Martin Vander Broek; and a sister-in-law, Eldora Kleinwolterink.

MURIEL M. KOELE

Mrs. Muriel Koele, age 82, of Hull, passed away on Wednesday, June 20, at the Prince of Peace Retirement Community in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, June 25, at 1:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Verlyn Boone will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Muriel Mae was born on March 16, 1925, in rural Hull, the daughter of George and Dora (Van Wyk) Vande Garde. She was raised at Hull, where she graduated from the public high school. She also graduated from Central College in Pella. In earlier years, she was employed as a telephone operator.

On October 21, 1953, she married Harold Koele in Hull. They farmed at Hull, where she was a homemaker. In 1989, they retired into Hull. Harold passed away on December 21, 2000, in Sioux Falls.

In 2001, Muriel moved to Brandon, South Dakota, near her daughter. Since 2004, she has resided at the Prince of Peace Retirement Community.

Mrs. Koele was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she participated in circle, including leading Bible studies, sang in the choir, and was part of a duet which provided special music for many funerals.

She was a member of the Wegman-Koele American Legion Auxiliary in Hull, serving as treasurer for several years. She also helped display flags on Memorial Days, and she enjoyed music, reading, and working crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her daughter and her husband, Carolyn and Robert Spitznagel, of Brandon; a son and his wife, Glenn and Jung Sun Koele, of Parkville, Missouri; three grandchildren, Jeremy Spitznagel, Heather, and her husband, Chad Singleterry, and Daniel Spitznagel; a great-grandson, Shad Singleterry; a sister and her husband, Ruth and George Meendering, of Sioux Center; a sister-in-law, Margene Van Dam, of Oak Harbor, Washington; and six Koele brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Leora Koele, of Sheldon; Marilyn Raap, of Brandon; Elsie Koele, of Hull; Phyllis and Elmer Raman, of Hull; Faith Vander Tuig, of Sioux Falls; and Wayne and Joan Koele, of Cedar Rapids.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Gerald Vande Garde and Donald Vande Garde; and eight Koele brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

CLARA D. KOGEL

Mrs. Clara Kogel, age 81, of Woonsocket, South Dakota, passed away on Friday, May 11, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital, surrounded by her family, after a brief battle with cancer.

Clara was born on January 21, 1926, in rural Woonsocket, the daughter of Emil and Alvina (Ronnfeldt) Schmiedt. She was a lifelong resident of the Woonsocket area, where she attended country schools.

On May 28, 1945, she married Melvin F. Kogel in Luverne, Minnesota. He passed away on April 29, 2005, in Woonsocket.

Survivors include her daughter and her husband, Kay and Mark Jonker; a granddaughter and her husband, Terri and Stan Stoltze; a grandson and his wife, Chris and Rebecca Jonker; and three great-grandchildren, Trevor and Tristin Saarie and Matthew Barthman, all of Orange City; a sister, Viola Flynn, of Sacramento, California; and two sisters-in-law, Emma and Joyce Kogel, both of Huron, South Dakota.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, May 14, in Woonsocket. Interment will follow at St. Wilfrid's Cemetery in Woonsocket. Visitation will be on Sunday, May 13, at the Basham Funeral Home in Woonsocket. Arrangements were completed by the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

JOHN WM. KOOIKER

Mr. John Wm. Kooiker, age 90, of Hull, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2007 at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, March 3, at 4:30pm, at the American Reformed Church, 911 First Street, Hull. The Rev. Steven Bierly will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation with the family present will be on Saturday, from 2:00pm to 3:30pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

John was born on October 17, 1916, west of Hull, the son of Ralph J. and Jennie (Vande Weerd) Kooiker. He attended several rural schools in northwest Iowa and Jones County, South Dakota, graduating from the eighth grade in O'Brien County, Iowa.

On June 16, 1939, he married Esther L. De Koster, the daughter of Dick and Ida (Bregman) De Koster, in Hull.

They made their home in Hull, where he worked for various road contractors, before forming his own company in 1949. In 1970, he founded Kooiker, Inc., with his sons, Clayton and Calvin. They operated out of Hull and Le Mars, doing bridge and culvert construction and excavation. He took great satisfaction in his work, operating his dragline to dig drainage ditches and farm ponds until he was 86 years old.

He also used his skills in support of community activities, such as preparing the ice skating rink, assisting with swimming pool construction, and building bluebird houses for the Sioux County Conservation Board.

John and Esther often traveled in the winter to California, Texas, Florida, and Hawaii, as well as points in between. They also enjoyed attending their grandchildren's school, sports and other activities.

Mrs. Kooiker passed away on March 9, 1998, in Hull, after more than 58 years of marriage. In August of 2004, John moved to Le Mars, where he became a resident of Park Place Estates. In May of 2006, he transferred to Brentwood.

He was a member of the American Reformed Church in Hull, where he served on the consistory as a deacon and was president of the Men's Brotherhood for some time.

Survivors include his twin sons and their wives, Clayton and Janice Kooiker and Calvin and Dixie Kooiker, all of Le Mars; four grandchildren, Stacy (Michael) Kooiker Brostoski, of Casper, Wyoming; Daniel Kooiker, of Le Mars; Jason (Amy) Kooiker, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Jared (Ann) Kooiker, of La Mesa, California; two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Autumn Kooiker, of Le Mars; two sisters, Jennie Vander Sloot, of Lyons, Kansas; and Maxine Napier, of Muskogee, Oklahoma; three brothers, Henry Kooiker, of Bellflower, California; Arthur (Mina) Kooiker, of Sheldon; and Elmer (Celia) Kooiker, of Missouri Valley, Iowa; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Harriet Van Batavia; a brother, Edwin Kooiker; two sisters-in-law, Esther (Boote) Kooiker and Virginia (Sipma) Kooiker; and three brothers-in-law, Jake Van Batavia, Ed Vander Sloot, and Ray Napier.

Memorials may be directed to the American Reformed Church.
