O. DONALD NELSON
Mr. Donald Nelson, age 83, of Hospers, passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, January 2, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Hospers. The Rev. Dr. Brian Janssen will officiate. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, at 1:30pm, at the Hospers Cemetery. Visitation will be on THURSDAY, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.
Orville Donald was born on June 28, 1926, in Hospers, the son of Francis and Nellie (Van Meeveren) Nelson. He was raised at Hospers, where he graduated from high school.
Don served in the United States Army during World War II. He lived his entire life at Hospers, working as a self-employed painter for fifty years.
Mr. Nelson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and participated in an adult Bible study. He also belonged to the Gideons. He had a faith that he never hesitated to express.
He was an avid fisherman, especially in rivers, and he traveled as far as Canada to pursue his sport. He had many friends and everyone in the area knew him.
Survivors include his sister, Marie Stangeland, of Archer; a brother and his wife, Evan “Kirby” and Ginger Nelson, of Rogers, Arkansas; eight nephews and nieces, many grand nephews and nieces; and a special friend, Jolene Hofmeyer, of Hospers, and her family.
He was preceded in death by a brother and his wife, Veril and Marjorie Nelson.

WILLEMINA PALS
Mrs. Willemina Pals, age 96, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2010, at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.
There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, January 5, at 10:30am, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Heilman will officiate. Interment will be on Tuesday, at 1:00pm, at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation with the family present will be the hour before the service on Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Willemina was born on December 1, 1913, on a farm in rural Hull, the daughter of Peter and Minnie (Vander Kooi) Visser. She attended a one room country school at Middleburg. When her father died prematurely of scarlet fever in 1930, she moved into Hull with her mother, younger brother, John, and sister, Josephine.
She pursued various types of employment to help support the family. Ironing clothes for other families was her first job. Working at the Bee Hive, a general store in Hull, was one position she truly enjoyed. She often shared stories of the people of Hull, as they related to retail sales. She also spent several years at the Family Clothiers store, when it opened on Main Street in Hull in the early 1950s.
On July 9, 1937, “Mina” married William Pals in Hull. They made their home in Hull until 1961, when they moved to Sibley. There they purchased and were the administrators of the Sibley Motel until 1974. Then they moved to Orange City, where she worked at De Vries Drapery. “Bill” passed away on February 9, 1976, in Iowa City.
Later, she was very active in the Dinner Date, a senior citizen program in Orange City. In October of 2008, she became a resident of the Heritage House.
For 35 years, Mrs. Pals was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church, where she was active in the Harmony Circle. She will be remembered for her crocheting, quilting, and sewing.
Survivors include her two sons and their wives, Arnold and Joan Pals, D.V.M., of Spring Lake, Michigan; and Peter and Helen Pals, D.D.S., of Orange City; five grandchildren, Carol (Martin) Stewart, Bill (Stephanie) Pals, Sarah (Blake) Born, Robin (Doug) Rylaarsdam, and Kay (Jeff) Joiner; eight great-grandchildren, a Native American foster daughter, Joan Pletcher, of Phoenix, Arizona; a brother, John W. Visser, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and a sister-in-law, Irene Monsma, of Silver Springs, Maryland.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Josephine Vogelzang.

WILLIAM C. REYELTS
Mr. William Reyelts, age 93, of Hull, passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.
There will be a funeral service on Saturday, January 30, at 2:00pm, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Hull. The Rev. John Riggle will officiate. Interment will follow at the church Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.
Wilhelm Claus Fredrick Reyelts was born on May 8, 1916, in rural Trosky, Minnesota, the son of August and Frieda (Funck) Reyelts. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church at Trosky and also attended county school there. As a teenager, his family moved to a farm northeast of Hull, which eventually became a Century Farm.
On September 30, 1941, he married Hendricka Scholten in Worthington, Minnesota. They farmed at Hull, where she passed away on August 4, 1980. On November 30, 1985, he married Marian Anderson Van Dyk at Hull. They continued to live at Hull, where she passed away on February 15, 2009.
Bill was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served on the council as president, elder, trustee, and deacon. He was also a member of the education and Cemetery committees. He had a strong faith throughout his life and was a prayer warrior and regular scripture reader.
In addition, he was a director of the Sheridan No. 4 rural school board.
In earlier years, he attended diesel mechanic school in Chicago, Illinois. He used those skills to repair farm machinery and restore his collection of tractors and antique gas engines. He enjoyed traveling to many areas, including Germany, Arizona, Virginia, and Indiana.
Survivors include five children, Donna (Joe) Gingras, of Rock Rapids; Glenda (Charles) Bryson, of Schleswig; Loren (Mary Ellen) Reyelts, of Hull; Lola Hindbjorgen, of Hendricks, Minnesota; and Marcia (Dennis) Orcutt, of Columbia City, Indiana; a son-in-law, Kenneth Stueven, of George; four step-children, Daryl Van Dyk and Loren Van Dyk, of Hull; Lloyd (Susan) Van Dyk, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Connie (Rigo) Mendez, of Boyden; sixteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Martha Zandstra, Arta Collins, and Arlyna Vande Griend.
In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Stueven; a son-in-law, Paul Hindbjorgen; a grandson, Darrel Stueven; and two sisters, Esther (Ewald) Georinger and Mildred (Alfred) Winter.
ESTHER SCHOLTEN
Mrs. Esther Scholten, age 85, of rural Hospers, passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at her residence.
There will be a funeral service on Saturday, January 30, at 10:30am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Nicholas Davelaar will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hospers Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.
Esther was born on June 29, 1924, in Orange City, the daughter of Jacob and Katrina (Vander Stoep) Peters. She was raised at Hospers, where she attended a country school and graduated from the Hospers Christian School.
On October 18, 1945, she married Morris J. Scholten at her parents' home in Hospers. They first made their home in Newkirk and then Alton, but spent most of their lives in rural Hospers. There she was a homemaker and helped her husband farm, including bringing many dinners to the fields. She also gave piano lessons. Mr. Scholten passed away on April 24, 1998, in Sioux City.
Mrs. Scholten was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where she served as an organist for 61 years. Her sister taught her to play the organ, and she played at numerous funerals. She also belonged to the Golden Hour and Priscilla Societies there.
She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, and spending time with her family, especially babysitting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known for sending cards to others and bringing many meals to the sick.
Survivors include her daughter and her husband, Katie and Harlan Rouse, of Hospers; three sons and their wives, Leland and Arlene Scholten, of Boyden; Arlan and Marcia Scholten, of Orange City; and Darwan and Janice Scholten, of Boyden; thirteen grandchildren, Karre (Jay) Sexton, Mark Rouse, Sara (Travis) Gemberling, Joel (Amanda) Scholten, Kimberly (Wade) Heemskerk, Mikah (Mary) Scholten, Aaron (Dana) Scholten, Keith Scholten, Miranda (Don) King, Larissa Scholten, Sheresa (Rob) O'Neill, Brayden Scholten, and Alyvia Scholten; twenty great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Herbert and Theresa Peters, of Sheldon; Morris' family, Ed and Eunice Scholten, of Sioux Center; Jim Scholten, of Inwood; Harriet and Al Van Zanten, of Doon; Bernard and Anna Scholten, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Helen Scholten, of Rock Valley.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Ava Allison Scholten; two sisters and their husbands, Marie and Cornelius Moerman and Caroline and Gilbert Visser; and Morris' family, Greta Scholten, Irma Scholten, Hilda Scholten, and Andrew Scholten.

RUSSELL B. TE GROTENHUIS
Mr. Russell Te Grotenhuis, age 92, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2009, at the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility.
There will be a memorial service on Monday, December 28, at 2:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Ter Beest will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Monday, at 1:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the funeral home.
Russell Bonnema was born on November 3, 1917, in Orange City, the son of Gerrit and Rena (Bonnema) Te Grotenhuis. He was raised on a farm two miles west of Orange City, where he first attended the Christian school and later the public school.
On August 23, 1943, he married Dorothy Margaret Boone at the home of her parents, Arie and Hattie Boone, in Orange City. They farmed the land where he was born for 26 years. In 1970, they moved into Orange City, where he was a service technician at Orange Motors. More recently, they moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. In November, he joined his wife at the Long Term Care Facility.
Mr. Te Grotenhuis was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he sang in the Men's Chorus. This summer, he decided to read through the complete Bible again. With his family, he loved to sing hymns in harmony.
He was a lifetime member of the Farm Bureau and served on the board of directors of the Sioux County Museum. He was creative and made everything from toys to wishing wells. He enjoyed playing pool, cards, and “Name that Tune” at the Long Term Care Facility.
Survivors include his wife of more than 66 years; a daughter and her husband, Donna Faye and Audley Van Peursem, of Orange City; a son and his wife, Duane and Evelyn Te Grotenhuis, of San Marcos, Texas; five grandchildren, Gregory Scott Van Peursem, and his wife, Donna, Michelle Lyn Grady, Zachary Duane Te Grotenhuis, Amy Allison Te Grotenhuis, and Alexander Dieters Te Grotenhuis, four great-grandchildren, Emily, Connor, and Parker Van Peursem, and Tiahna Grady; and a brother and his wife, Eugene and Leola Te Grotenhuis, of Orange City.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Kurt Douglas Van Peursem; and two brothers and their wives, Arthur and Kate Te Grotenhuis and Milo and Gert Te Grotenhuis.
Memorials may be directed to the church organ fund.
JENNIE VANDE BRAKE
Mrs. Jennie Vande Brake, age 83, of rural Maurice, passed away on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at her farm home.
There will be a funeral service on Saturday, November 21, at 1:30pm, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Dr. Perry De Groot will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Jennie was born on January 22, 1926, in rural Newkirk, the daughter of William C. and Jennie (Van Meeteren) Langstraat. She was raised near Newkirk.
On April 25, 1947, she married Eugene Vande Brake in Orange City. They made their home on a farm north of Maurice. She was a homemaker and partner with her husband, as they farmed and operated a repair shop.
Mrs. Vande Brake was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she participated in the women's activities. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader.
Survivors include her husband of more than 62 years, “Gene”; a son and his wife, Kenneth and Rose Vande Brake, of Alton; two daughters, Jolene De Boer, of Ireton; and Carol, and her husband, Randy Brown, of Chicago, Illinois; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; a brother, Peter Langstraat, of Orange City; a sister, Angelina Torrenga, of Clinton, Wisconsin; and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by six brothers, Cornie, Dick, William, John, Howard, and Walter Langstraat.

SHIRLEY K. VANDE HOEF
Mrs. Shirley Vande Hoef, age 79, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, January 25, 2010, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.
There will be a memorial service on Thursday, January 28, at 2:30pm, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers. The Rev. David Powers will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Newkirk Cemetery. There will be a prayer service on Thursday, at 1:30pm, at the church.
Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Shirley Kathleen was born on June 5, 1930, in Orange City, the daughter of Henry and Dena (Roos) Verdoorn. She was raised at Newkirk, where she graduated from high school.
On November 3, 1948, she married Robert Dale Vande Hoef at Newkirk. They farmed at Boyden for thirteen years and then moved to an acreage in Newkirk, where they lived for forty years. In 2002, they retired into Orange City.
Mrs. Vande Hoef was a homemaker, as well as a supportive assistant to her husband in raising bees and sheep. Over the years, she gave many presentations to students about bees. She also held a few other positions and especially liked serving as a nurse's aide at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.
She had an extensive doll collection and exhibited in two booths at antique malls at the Iowa Great Lakes. There she was able to use her extensive knowledge of antique dolls to do appraisals for others.
She also enjoyed her spinning and weaving group, and Shirley had a special love for her two great-granddaughters, Abbigail and Kaylee.
She was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where she belonged to the Golden Hour Society and the Mission Fellowship. She also taught Sunday school and Bible school classes.
Survivors include her husband of more than 61 years, Bob; four children, Kerry, and her husband, Norman Nieuwenhuis, of Orange City; De Ann Vande Hoef, of Orange City; Peggy, and her husband, Chuck Merriam, of Ringle, Wisconsin; and Scott Vande Hoef, of Hospers; two grandchildren and their wives, Erik and Jenilyn Nieuwenhuis, of Sioux City; and Seth and Jill Nieuwenhuis, of Omaha, Nebraska; two great-granddaughters; a brother and his wife, William and Ginny Verdoorn, of Lake Park; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Cornelia and Craig Camarigg, of Sanborn.
