Leo Brubaker

Leo L. Brubaker, 84, of Prairie City, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines from a heart ailment.

Born Aug. 30, 1916, in Prairie City, he was the son of Earl and Mary Susan "Mamie" Buckingham Brubaker. On April 29, 1938, he married Norma Vroom in Prairie City.
Mr. Brubaker graduated from Prairie City High School in 1935. He owned and operated E.M. Brubaker & Sons in Prairie City. Following his retirement, he refurbished antique machinery and tractors.

He was a member of Prairie City Church of the Brethren, where he served as a lifetime deacon. He was also a member of Prairie City Volunteer Fire Department and the City Council, and charter member of Central Iowa Hawkeye Gas Engine Club.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Noralee Warrick of Prairie City and Marlene Smith of Bonaparte; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Opal Goodrich of Prairie City; four brothers, Carl Brubaker of Medford, Ore., Merlin Brubaker of Bettendorf, Doyle Brubaker of Newton, and Marvin Brubaker of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister, one granddaughter, and two great-grandsons.

Visitation will be after noon Monday at Walters Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Brubaker will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Prairie City Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Timothy Peter officiating. Burial will be in Waveland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Prairie City Church of the Brethren.

Madison Parker

Madison R. Parker, 72, of Crawfordsville, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Morning Sun Care Center in Morning Sun.

Born Feb. 23, 1929, in Sidon, Miss., he was the son of Lewis and Maudell Jaynes Parker. In July 1953, he married Madeline Schuver in Kahoka, Mo. She died Sept. 4, 1993.
Mr. Parker had worked in bridge construction. He enjoyed being a handyman.

Survivors include one sister, Alice Bailey of Carrollton, Miss.; one brother, Sam Parker of Oklahoma City, Okla.; several nieces and nephews; and a friend, Laurita Ross of Columbus Junction.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Honts Funeral Home in Winfield.

The graveside funeral for Mr. Parker will be 2 p.m. Monday in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo.

A memorial has been established for Hospice of Iowa City.

Esther Stimpson

Esther Mae Stimpson, 62, of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Carman, Ill., died Aug. 10, 2001.

Born Nov. 2, 1938, in New London, she married Bobbie L. Stimpson.
Mrs. Stimpson moved to Bradenton six years ago from Carman.

She was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Brenda Lee Jameson of Bradenton; and two brothers, Bob Woodall of New London and Bill Woodall of Fort Madison.

There will be no visitation.

The memorial service for Mrs. Stimpson will be 10 a.m. Friday at Toale Brothers Bradenton Chapel in Bradenton.

A memorial has been established for Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238.

Peggy Barker–Gaskin

Peggy Marie Barker–Gaskin, 43, formerly of New Liberty, died Wednesday evening, Jan. 28, 2004, at the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center.

Born Jan. 21, 1961, in Morrison, Ill., she was the daughter of Robert Lee and Patricia Ann Love Barker. On Feb. 22, 1994, she married Terry Gaskin.

Mrs. Barker–Gaskin was a homemaker. She was of the Protestant faith. She enjoyed knitting and fishing.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Penny Ann Barker of Muscatine; three sons, Robert Lee Barker of Rockwell City, Terry Mack Barker of Grandview, and Jason Scott Barker of Mount Pleasant; three granddaughters; one brother, Douglas Donald Barker of Clinton; and one sister, Jane Johnson of Clinton.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

There will be no service for Mrs. Barker–Gaskin. Her body has been donated to the Deeded Body Program at the University of Iowa.

Dudgeon–McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello is in charge of the arrangements.

Roger Hughes

Roger N. Hughes, 78, of Nauvoo, Ill., died at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Born Oct. 2, 1926, in Freeman Spur, Ill., he was the son of Harley and Inez Newcom Hughes. On Aug. 6, 1948, he married Betty Owen in Herrin, Ill. She died July 14, 1992.

Mr. Hughes taught music in schools in Iowa, New Mexico and Illinois for more than 35 years. He taught and led the band at Nauvoo–Colusa for 25 years. He also sold ads for the Hancock County Shopper.

He was a graduate of Southern Illinois University. Music had been in his life since childhood and he played the French horn from childhood through college. For years he played in bands led by local notables such as Tiny Biggs and Eddie Conn. He was an Army Air Force veteran. He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include one son, Stephen O. "Steve" Hughes of Nauvoo; one daughter, Cindy L. Hughes of Lake Delton, Wis.; special friend, Patricia Ellenberg of Nauvoo; one brother, John R. Hughes of Conway, Ark.; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Lamporte Funeral Home in Nauvoo, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Hughes will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lamporte Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mark Anderson officiating. Burial with a full military service will be in Nauvoo City Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Maxine Ganion

Maxine H. Ganion, 87, of Carthage, Ill., died at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage.

Born March 2, 1917, in Hancock County, she was the daughter of Clarence and Evelyn Lauderback Hardy. On Dec. 31, 1936, she married Robert Ganion in Quincy, Ill. He died in 2004.

Mrs. Ganion worked for Dr. R.W. McClellan in Carthage for 25 years and also was an LPN at Memorial Hospital in Carthage.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Carthage, the Rebecca's and TOPS.

Survivors include one son, Larry Ganion of Muncie, Ind.; three grandchildren; five great–grandchildren; one half sister, Betty Hardy of Carthage; and one stepbrother, Bob Hardy of Burlington.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother, Iona Hardy, and one half sister.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.

The funeral for Mrs. Ganion will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Carthage. Burial will be in Harmony Township Cemetery near Bentley.

Memorials have been established for First Baptist Church and Blessing Hospice of Hancock County.

Joann Jones

Joann M. Jones, 68, of Wever died at 2:55 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at her home.

Born March 1, 1936, in Birmingham, she was the daughter of Samuel Walter and Bertha Ellen Pickral Crafton. On Nov. 7, 1956, she married Thomas M. Jones Sr. in Nauvoo, Ill.

Mrs. Jones was a homemaker. She also worked as a social worker and with home health care.

She was a graduate of Birmingham High School and attended Southeastern Community College. She was of the Protestant faith. She loved playing bingo, gardening, collecting dolls, playing tic tac toe, fishing and going to the casino.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Pam Bullard of Keokuk and Sherry Roxane Jones of Longview, Calif.; one son, Thomas M. Jones Jr. of Fort Madison; four grandchildren; three great–grandchildren; four sisters, Mildred Brown of Burlington, Marjorie Jarmes of Fairfield, Marilyn Rettig of Wever and Idora Crafton of Keosauqua; and three brothers, Roy Crafton of Le Claire, Kenneth Crafton of Waterloo and Leonard Crafton of Birmingham.

She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, her parents and three brothers, one in infancy.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Jones will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. William Porter officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Betty Ertz

The Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Elizabeth E. "Betty" Ertz, 83, will be 10:00 AM this morning at St. Paul's Catholic Church with Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . A memorial has been established for the Burlington Notre Dame School System. Janis L. Haas

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Janis L. Haas, 56, will be 10:00 AM Saturday, February 12, in the Chapel of the Hass–Thielen Funeral Home with the Reverend Tyrone C. Henderson officiating. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery . Visitation will begin at noon today at the Hass–Thielen Funeral Home until 7:00 PM. There will be no family visitation. Fern Pezley

Fern Elizabeth Pezley, 86, of Fort Madison died at 7:55 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

Born March 28, 1918, in Marceline, Mo., she was the daughter of Harry E. and Nora Grogan Wells. On June 25, 1940, she married Ernest Pezley in Marceline. He died Nov. 14, 1983.

Mrs. Pezley was a homemaker.

She was a member of SS. Mary and Joseph Church.

Survivors include one son, Robert Pezley of Sioux City; four grandchildren; four great–grandchildren; one brother, Harry Wells of Fort Madison; and seven nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, four brothers and two sisters.

There will be no visitation. The body has been cremated.

A memorial Mass for Mrs. Pezley will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at SS. Mary and Joseph Church, with the Rev. Thomas Parlette officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for SS. Mary and Joseph Church or a charity of the donor's choosing.

Joseph Macacia

Joseph J. Macacia, 96, of Rosebush Garden Health Center, died at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at the health center.

Born Jan. 9, 1906, in Burlington, he was the son of Phillip and Anna Maria LoBono Macacia.

Mr. Macacia was a professional musician.

He loved music and had played in area bands. He enjoyed his dog, driving his red 1965 Fort Mustang convertible and traveling. He was a member of Sts. John & Paul Catholic Church and the Musicians Union.

Survivors include one niece, Delores Roberts of West Burlington; one great–nephew; one great–niece; many great–great–nieces and nephews; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.

Friends may call after 8 a.m. Wednesday at Hass Funeral Home. There will be no family visitation.

The funeral for Mr. Macacia will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Patrick J. Hilgendorf officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Animal Protection League.
