PHYLLIS A. HULSTEIN

Mrs. Phyllis Hulstein, age 70, of Sioux Center, passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, February 13, at 1:30pm, at the New Hope Evangelical Free Church in Orange City. The Rev. Jeffrey Whitt will officiate. Interment will follow at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Phyllis Ann was born on November 14, 1939, in Cedar Falls, the daughter of Swier and Christena (Stork) Cannegieter. She was raised in rural Grundy Center, where she attended a country school and later the Grundy Center School, graduating in 1958. She then went to Dordt Junior College in Sioux Center, where she received her Associate of Arts degree in 1960. From 1960 to 1964, she was a teacher at the Sanborn and Oskaloosa Christian Schools. She then returned to Dordt, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1965 and taught at the Orange City Christian School for one year.

On July 14, 1966, she married Gerrit S. Hulstein in Wellsburg. They made their home on a farm in rural Orange City, where she was a homemaker. For fourteen years, she was also a teacher's aide at the Sioux Center Community Schools. Gerrit passed away on October 11, 1984, in Sioux City. In 2001, Phyllis moved to Sioux Center.

She was currently a member of the New Hope Evangelical Free Church and a former member of the Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center and the Dover Avenue Alliance Church in Orange City. She served as an organist at both Central and Dover. At Central, she also taught Sunday school classes and she and Gerrit were leaders of Reformed Church Youth Fellowship. At Dover she was active in Awana. In later years, she went on mission trips to Haiti and Paraguay.

In addition, she was an active member of the Siouxland Women's Chorus and of Coffee Break. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, and traveling.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Brent and Mary Hulstein, of Orange City; four grandchildren, Hannah, Amanda, Heather, and Gerrit Hulstein; two sisters, Pearl, and her husband, Al Eiten, of Wellsburg; and Alice Behrends, of Waterloo; and two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Cannegieter, of Dike; and Marlene, and her husband, Ernie Bruns, of Spencer.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Hulstein; a brother, Andrew Cannegieter; a sister, Lillian Barron; and a brother-in-law, Russ Behrends.

ESTHER HULST

Mrs. Esther Hulst, age 79, formerly of Orange City and Sheldon, went home to be with her Lord on February 11, 2010, at the Madrid Home in Madrid.

There will be a memorial service on Friday, February 19, at 1:00pm, at the First Presbyterian Church in Hospers. The Rev. Dr. Brian Janssen will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hospers Cemetery. There will be a prayer service on Friday, at 12:15pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, at the funeral home.

Esther Jeane was born on September 6, 1930, in Orange City, the daughter of Gerrit and Bertha (Vander Broek) Mulder.

She married Marion Hulst of Hospers on September 16, 1955, in Orange City. During their married years, they lived in Sheldon, Kingsley, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Vinton, Ames, and Ankeny. He passed away on November 27, 1991, in Ankeny.

Mrs. Hulst became a resident of the Madrid Home in May of 2008.

She was a homemaker and in later years, worked with custom drapes for an interior decorator. She was also employed in the fabric department of the Wal-Mart store in Ankeny.

Esther was a member of the Bethany Reformed Church in Des Moines.

Survivors include her daughter and her husband, Laura and Tim Brown, of Ames; a son, Robert Hulst, of Ankeny; a sister and her husband, Lois and Peter Jeltema, of Orange City; three sisters-in-law, Harriet Stevens and Gladys Ebel, both of Primghar; and Betty Hulst, of Orange City; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials may be made to the Madrid Home, in loving memory of Esther.

NICK H. HULST

Mr. Nick Hulst, age 86, of Hospers, passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2008, at the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility.

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, June 11, at 1:30pm, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers. The Rev. David Powers will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hospers Cemetery. There will be a prayer service on Wednesday, at 12:30pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Visitation will be after 3:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the funeral home.

Nick was born on August 29, 1921, in rural Alton, the son of Herman and Effie (Roelfson) Hulst. He was raised at Alton, where he attended a country school. He farmed at Alton for 22 years.

On August 14, 1959, he married BettyJane Alice Heeren in the parsonage of the Newkirk Reformed Church. They made their home in Hospers, where he was employed at OK One Stop for 45 years. He also drove a school bus for 32 years, was a rural mail carrier, and served as the Hospers policeman for three years.

In the fall of 2006, Mr. and Mrs. Hulst moved to the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, and in January of 2008, they transferred to the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility.

He was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where he served as head usher for forty years. He also volunteered with the Hospers Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife of more than 48 years; a son and his wife, Jeffrey Lee and Sandi Hulst, of Gladbrook; a daughter and her husband, Nancy Ann and Michael Wilson, of Palm Harbor, Florida; six grandchildren, Nicole and her husband Dustin Johnson, Weston, Tessa, Tanner, and Callie Hulst, and Nathan Wilson; and two sisters, Gladys Ebel and Harriet Stevens, both of Primghar.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Seth Hulst; four sisters, Tracy Dolphin, Maggie Dolphin, Jennie Grondyke, and Margaret Vanden Bosch; and five brothers, Henry, Dick, John, Everett, and Marion Hulst.

Memorials will be directed to the Hospers Volunteer Fire Department.

WILLEMINA JANSEN

Mrs. Willemina Jansen, age 91, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2010, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.

There will be a memorial service on Monday, March 22, at 1:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. Donald Lenderink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Monday, at 12:00noon, at the funeral home.

Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 7:30pm, at the funeral home.

DR. RODNEY G. JISKOOT

Dr. Rodney Jiskoot, age 70, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2010, at the Hospice of the Valley in Mesa, Arizona.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, February 13, at 11:00am, at the American Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Keith Krebs and the Rev. Harlan Van Oort will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Saturday, at 10:00am, at the CHURCH.

Visitation with the family present will be on Friday, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, at the CHURCH. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

DARLENE E. KIERNAN

Mrs. Darlene Kiernan, age 76, of 4 Rebecca Lane, Savannah, Georgia 31411, formerly of Orange City and Sioux Center, Iowa, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2006, at her home, with her husband and children at her side.

Darlene Elva was the daughter of Peter Vanden Berge and Jennie (Reitveld) Vanden Berge. She was born in Orange City on September 28, 1929. Her family moved from their farm home to Orange City in 1944. Darlene was involved in area events and served as the Queen of the annual Tulip Festival at age 16. She enjoyed performing in a number of local theatre productions, and graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City. She taught elementary school students in Orange City and Le Mars, Iowa; Vermillion, South Dakota; and Bangor Maine.

On June 9, 1951, Darlene married Thomas E. Kiernan, who was a student at the University of South Dakota. Throughout their married life, she remained very supportive of Tom's medical practices in Sioux Center, Iowa City and Newton, Iowa. She was a member of the Iowa State Medical Auxiliary and was active in the Jasper County and Skiff Medical Center Auxiliaries. Darlene was a member of the Newton YMCA Board of Directors, Theta Chi, and the Newton Country Club.

Darlene and Tom enjoyed wintering at their home in the Cayman Islands and made many good friends from both the United States and Canada, over the years.

Survivors include her husband of more than 55 years; her daughter, Jane, and her husband, James Kray, of Wheaton, Illinois; her son, James Kiernan, and his wife, Rita, of McHenry, Illinois; five grandchildren, Thomas and Jennifer Kray; and Mallory, Bridget, and Delaney Kiernan; a brother and his wife, Peter and June Vanden Berge, of Orange City; a sister and her husband, Ruth and Frank De Vries, of Orange City; a brother and his wife, James and Judy Vanden Berge, of Traverse City , Michigan; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Vanden Berge, in World War II, and a sister and her husband, Jean and Richard Hawkins, of LeMars.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, August 26, at 10:30am, at the Alton Presbyterian Church, 311 Twelfth Street, Alton, Iowa 51003. Mr. Ronald Brink, C. L. P., will officiate. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, at 10:00am, at the Nassau Township Cemetery, near Alton. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

The family suggests that memorials be directed to the Alton Presbyterian Church building fund or to Hospice of Savannah, Post Office Box 13190, Savannah, Georgia 31416.

R. MAX KIERNAN

Mr. Max Kiernan, age 82, of Alton, passed away on Thursday, September 1, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, September 6, at 10:30am, at the Alton Reformed Church. Mr. Ronald Brink, C. L. P. will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Nassau Township Cemetery, near Alton. There will be a family prayer service on Tuesday, at 9:15am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, and at Masonic Service at 8:00pm, at the funeral home.

Robert Max was born on May 27, 1923, in Aurelia, the son of Earl St.Clair and Gertrude Elizabeth (Leedom) Kiernan. In 1929, his family moved to Wakefield, Nebraska, and in 1936, they moved to Alton. He graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City and served in the United States Army during World War II.

On March 29, 1946, he married Sylva Dykstra in Alton. For seven years, they made their home in Moville, where he was employed at the First Trust and Savings Bank. In 1954, they moved to Alton, where he began working at the Alton Savings Bank. In 1973, he became president of the bank. In December of 1989, he retired and became chairman of the board of directors of the Alton Bank Corporation, which operates the Community Banks in Alton, Orange City, and Hospers.

Mr. Kiernan was a faithful member of the Alton Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, elder, and Sunday school superintendent, and sang in the choir for many years. He also belonged to the Floyd American Legion Post in Alton, the Floyd Masonic Lodge in Orange City, and the Abu Bekr Shrine in Sioux City, where he sang with the Chanters.

In addition, he was a member of the Siouxland and the Iowa Bankers Associations, where he held county and state offices. He was also a member of the Alton Chamber of Commerce, the Alton Area Development Corporation, the Sioux Golf and Country Club, and he was a founding member of the Alton Historical Society.

Max and Sylva enjoyed wintering at the Fountain of the Sun in Mesa, Arizona, for many years.

Survivors include his wife of more than 59 years; three sons, Dr. R. Martin Kiernan, and his wife, Susan, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Thomas Earl Kiernan, and his wife, LaZanne, of Alton; and Dr. John Kiernan, and his special friend, Patty Stein, both of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Mollie Kiernan; Jill, and her husband, Chris McCurdy; Tiffany, and her husband, Brian Leibold; Ryan Kiernan; R. Micah Kiernan; Abigail Kiernan; and Jerrod Kiernan; a brother and his wife, Dr. Tom and Darlene Kiernan, of Savannah, Georgia; and nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister and her husband, Patricia and Dr. Carl Oelrich.

Memorials will be directed to the Alton Presbyterian Church building fund.

NELLIE LANGSTRAAT

Miss Nellie Langstraat, age 91, formerly of Newkirk and Des Moines, passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2009, at the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, November 24, at 1:30pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. David Powers will officiate. Interment will follow at the Newkirk Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be the hour before the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Nellie was born on November 10, 1918, in rural Sheldon, the daughter of Henry P. and Anna Marie (Scholten) Langstraat. She was baptized in the Newkirk Reformed Church on January 17, 1919. She was raised on the family farm north of Newkirk, where she attended a country school and the church's Sunday school. Later, she moved to Sheldon with her parents.

As a deaf woman, she moved to Des Moines to attend a rehabilitation training center. During her first year there, she met Geraldine Armel, who was also deaf. They started a friendship which lasted the rest of their lives.

On April 12, 1956, Nellie became employed at the Lindfelt Glove Factory in Des Moines, which later changed to the Champion Glove Factory. She sewed many types of gloves, but specialized in stitching batters' gloves. She retired on November 1, 1983, after 27 years of service.

She also became a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church for the Deaf in Des Moines, where she faithfully worshipped. She enjoyed playing card games, such as Flinch and Hearts, with other church members and her brothers and sisters. She also liked sewing and making crafts.

Due to declining health, Nell and “Geri” moved to the Prairie View Manor in Sanborn in October of this year. They transferred to the nursing home there in November.

Survivors include a sister, Anna Rensink, of Sheldon; a brother, Herman Langstraat, of Orange City; a sister-in-law, Alice Langstraat, of Orange City; several nephews and nieces, and her dear friend, Geraldine.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and his wife, Peter and Tracie Langstraat; a brother-in-law, Bernie (Anna) Rensink; two sisters-in-law, Grace and Winifred (Herman) Langstraat; two sisters and their husbands, Johanna and Lawrence Den Hartog and Harriet and Elmer Zorgdrager; and a brother, Lester “Ted” (Alice) Langstraat.

Memorials may be directed to the Calvary Lutheran Church for the Deaf.

PETER W. LANGSTRAAT

Mr. Peter Langstraat, age 93, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2010, at Hillcrest Health Care Services in Hawarden.

There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, February 3, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Dr. Perry De Groot will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Peter was born on December 20, 1916, at Hospers, the son of William C. and Jennie (Van Meeteren) Langstraat. He was raised at Newkirk.

On December 21, 1939, he married Elizabeth Doppenberg in Orange City. They first made their home in Newkirk, where he was a clerk at the Newkirk Store. In 1941, they moved to Orange City, where he was a partner with Gerrit and John Mulder in their corn shelling and trucking business. In 1951, he became the Standard Oil agent and bulk plant manager, and in 1961, he began his own corn shelling and trucking business. In 1970, he purchased a truck, which he drove for Farmers Feed and Supply of Boyden. In 1980, he retired to care for his ill wife, who passed away on December 28, 1982, in Sioux Center.

In 1984, “Pete” began driving part-time for Adrian Van Zandbergen Trucking, and in 1988, he started working part-time for De Vries Transfer. He completely retired in 1996. On January 21 of this year, he moved to Hillcrest.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church.

Survivors include his two sons and their wives, LeRoy and Diane Langstraat, of Ireton; and Randall and Kathy Langstraat, of Bensenville, Illinois; a daughter, Kathy Langstraat, of Boyden; four grandchildren, Jim Langstraat, and his wife, Deb, of Elk Point, South Dakota; Jeff Langstraat, and his wife, Denise, of Jefferson, South Dakota; Randy Langstraat, and his girlfriend, Amanda, of Grand Junction, Colorado; and Kristy, and her husband, Darrell Bolte, of Montgomery, Illinois; two great-grandchildren, Manny Langstraat, and his wife, Alysha, of Grand Forks, North Dakota; and Abbey Langstraat, of Elk Point; a sister, Angelina Torrenga, of Clinton, Wisconsin; a brother-in-law, Eugene Vande Brake; two sisters-in-law, Ida and Joy Langstraat; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jennie Vande Brake; and six brothers, Cornie, Dick, Howard, John, Walter, and William Langstraat.

Memorials may be directed to the church organ repair fund.
