DICK TE BRINK

Mr. Dick Te Brink, age 86, of Alton, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2010, at the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, January 15, at 10:00am, at the Alton Reformed Church. The Rev. Michael Hardeman and the Rev. Elizabeth Hardeman will officiate. Interment will follow at the Nassau Township Cemetery, near Alton.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the CHURCH. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Dick was born on April 20, 1923, in Orange City, the son of Bert and Jennie (Vink) Te Brink. He was raised at Orange City, where he graduated from the Christian School. He then worked for several farmers in the Orange City area.

In 1943, he joined the United States Army and was sent over the English Channel three days after D-Day. He fought through France and was wounded on the banks of the Rhine River.

On July 31, 1945, while home on furlough, Mr. Te Brink married Lois Lucille De Boer in Alton. After being discharged from the military later that year, he hauled cream for the Orange City Creamery.

In February of 1948, they moved to the De Boer family farm, near Alton, where he farmed for many years. After being injured in an accident in 1971, he purchased Freriks Trucking in Alton. He then hauled cattle and hogs until retirement.

In October of 2007, Dick became a resident of Happy Siesta.

He was a member of the Alton Reformed Church and the Floyd American Legion Post in Alton. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, and traveling.

Survivors include his wife of more than 64 years; seven children and their spouses, Lloyd and Emalee Te Brink, of Alton; Leah and John Krohn, of Winterset; Elizabeth and John Roberts, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Ruth and David Katt, of Denver, Colorado; Dawn and Kim Wieking, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Paul and Starla Te Brink, of Alton; and Todd and Kathy Te Brink, of St. Charles, Missouri; twenty grandchildren, Sarah (Jason Hendel) Te Brink, Katie (Luke) Horkey, Tim (Kristen) Te Brink, Christopher (Carrie) Krohn, Jennifer Kirby, Nathan (Christine) Krohn, Amy (Dave) Daniels, Johanna (Hector) Uribe, Jeremy (Heather) Katt, Jason (Heather) Katt, Jaci (Dan) Johnson, Jenon Katt, Bret Wieking, Blake (Carrie) Wieking, Bryant Wieking, Bradon Wieking, Tana Te Brink, Austin Te Brink, Tyler Te Brink, and Kelsey Te Brink; eleven great-grandchildren; a sister, Amy Van Engen, of Orange City, a brother Alfred (Jean) Te Brink, of Denver; and three sisters-in-law, Joyce (Nick) Hulst, of Orange City, Dorothy Furda, of Dubuque, and Marilynn (Jason) Loving, of Battle Creek, Michigan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Nettie Mars, Dorothy Jacobsma, and Bernice Mellema; and a brother, John Te Brink.

Memorials may be directed to the church for new audio/video equipment.

DICK VANDER VEGTE

Mr. Dick Vander Vegte, age 78, of Peoria, Arizona, formerly of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at the Hospice of Arizona in Peoria.

Arrangements are being completed by the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

KATHRYN W. ZOET

Mrs. Kathryn Zoet, age 87, of Hull, passed away on Monday, February 9, 2009, at the Fellowship Village in Inwood.

There will be a funeral service on Thursday, February 12, at 2:30pm, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Verlyn Boone will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Kathryn Willemina was born on May 2, 1921, at Orange City, the daughter of Pleun and Jennie (Wiersema) De Zeeuw. She was raised in the Middleburg and Boyden area, where she attended the Capel No. 9 country school.

On May 2, 1946, she married Johan Andrew Zoet in Middleburg. They farmed at Hull, where she was a homemaker and assisted her husband. She was also employed at the Pleasant Acres Nursing Home in Hull and served as a foster grandma at Hope Haven in Rock Valley. “Joe” passed away on July 22, 1989, in Rock Valley, after more than 43 years of marriage.

Mrs. Zoet moved into Hull in November of 1989. She was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she belonged to their ladies aid. She enjoyed reading, raising flowers, embroidering, and babysitting her many grandchildren.

Survivors include four children and their spouses, Harrietta Niemeyer and Philip and Karen Zoet, all of Hull; and Lisa and Mark Van Der Brink and Lori and Steve Reintsma, all of Rock Valley; nineteen grandchildren and their spouses, Paula and Mike Steffes, Joel and Pam Niemeyer, Kim and Jeff Hoogendoorn, Michael and April Niemeyer, Michelle and Bob Reisch, Melanie Beech, Brady and Lori Bakker, Kristie and Tim Van Leeuwen, Heather Bagshaw, Heidi Bakker, Nicholas Van Der Brink, Joseph Van Der Brink, Sarah Van Der Brink, Matthew Reintsma, Rebecca Reintsma, Tyler Reintsma, Amanda Swearingen, Nick Swearingen, and Adam Schultz; and twelve great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Janith Faye Schuldt; three grandchildren, Jason Bakker, Katie Reintsma, and Monica Zoet; a grandson-in-law, Ben Bagshaw; and a sister and her husband, Ann and Peter Leusink.

Memorials may be directed to the Foster Grandparents at Hope Haven and Fellowship Village.

LLOYD WOUDSTRA

Mr. Lloyd Woudstra, age 75, of Sheldon, passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2006, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, November 14, at 11:00am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Duane Tinklenberg will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hospers Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Lloyd Dale was born on June 14, 1931, near Hospers, the son of Ike and Willemina (Reinsma) Woudstra. He was raised at Hospers, where he attended the Christian school. He graduated from the Western Christian High School in Hull.

On June 19, 1951, he married Gertrude Marlene Ennema at Hospers. They made their home in Hospers, where he was involved in the meat packing business. In June of 1978, they moved to Sheldon. He was in the cattle feeding business at the Sioux Center Cooperative Feedlot until his death. He courageously fought his battle with cancer to the end.

Mr. Woudstra was a lifetime faithful member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers. He had been a member of the board of directors of the Hospers Christian School.

His major goals in life were to raise a Christian family and to be a loving and caring husband and father. He felt blessed to have his family, and he enjoyed spending time with them, especially his grandchildren. Lloyd was known for his sense of humor by all who knew him. The three most important things in his life were his faith in God, his family, and cattle feeding.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 55 years, Trudy; six children, Linda, and her husband, Roger Tiedeman, of Hull; Ila Johnson, of Sheldon; Sharon, and her husband, Hank Coulander, of Sheldon; Wayne “Butch” Woudstra, of Le Mars; Shirley, and her husband, Merlin Ryks, of Sioux Center; and Bonnie, and her husband, Glen Bonnema, of Ireton; sixteen grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, a step-great-grandchild; a sister and her husband, Gwen and Bernie Bousema, of Sheldon; and a brother and his wife, Irv and Marlene Woudstra, of Hospers.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.

ALVIN L. WESTRA

Mr. Alvin Westra, age 70, of Orange City, passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, March 5, at 10:30am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Mr. Tom Hydeen will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday at the funeral home.

Alvin Lee was born on December 22, 1939, in rural Maurice, the son of Henry and Clarine (De Vries) Westra. He graduated from the Sioux Center High School and served in the United States Marines, during the Vietnam Conflict.

He made his home in Orange City, where he was a carpenter for Kepp Construction, which later became Krull Construction.

Mr. Westra enjoyed racing, especially NASCAR, reading, and fishing. He liked spending time with his sister and niece and special cousins, Hope and Rick Cameron.

Survivors include his sister, Karen Brunemeier, and a niece, Carissa Brunemeier, both of Orange City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to the Heart Fund or the Cancer Society.

PHYLLIS I. VAN WYK

Mrs. Phyllis Van Wyk, age 84, of Orange City, passed away on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, February 5, at 10:30am, at the Alton Reformed Church in Alton. The Rev. Michael Hardeman and the Rev. Elizabeth Hardeman will officiate. Interment will follow at the Nassau Township Cemetery, near Alton. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Phyllis Irene was born on February 15, 1925, in rural Seney, the daughter of Ed and Hattie (Ruisch) Sorgdrager. At the age of four, her family moved to a farm by Alton.

On February 22, 1949, she married Gerrit Van Wyk at Alton. They made their home on the Sorgdrager farm, where she was a homemaker. In later times, she was also a ward secretary at the Orange City Municipal Hospital for 23 years. In 1994, they retired to Orange City. She moved to the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon in 2004, and in May of 2008, Mr. and Mrs. Van Wyk both became residents of the Long Term Care Facility. Gerrit passed away there on July 12, 2009, after more than sixty years of marriage.

Phyllis was a member of the Alton Reformed Church, where she participated in the women's organizations. She also belonged to the Floyd American Legion Post Auxiliary.

She enjoyed music, especially playing the piano, doing yard work, and going to travelogues. She looked forward to quality time with her grandchildren and spent many hours caring for them.

Survivors include her six children, Harlan Van Wyk, and his wife, Jocelyn, of Des Moines; Stanley Van Wyk, and his wife, Nancy, of Marshalltown; Ronald Van Wyk, and his wife, Connie, of Alton; Lila, and her husband, Brad Goslinga, of Orange City; Gordon Van Wyk, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Roger Van Wyk, and his wife, Kristie, of Sergeant Bluff; seventeen grandchildren, Michelle Davis, Sarah Quang, Dan Van Wyk, Natasha Billow, Nathan Finestead; Lindsey and Ryan Van Wyk; Jesse, Joshua, and Andrew Van Wyk; Brett, Stephanie, Jennifer, and Jason Goslinga; Haley Tomlinson, and Tanner and Jayden Van Wyk; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Edith Rozeboom, of Sheldon.

She was preceded in death by a sister and her husband, Harriet and Theodore Feekes, and a brother-in-law, Lammert Rozeboom.

Warren H. Peters

Warren H. Peters, age 85, of Newell, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2007, in Plymouth, Wisconsin while visiting in the home of his niece.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at the Emanuel St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton with Pastors Wayne Pfannkuch and Greg Baskerville officiating. Burial will be in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery inear Lytton with presentation of the flag by the V.F.W. Post No. 590 and the American Legion Cantigny Post No. 195 of Sac City. Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell from 4 to 8 on Monday.

Warren was born January 28, 1922, on the family farm in Glidden, Iowa, the son of Jans and Elizebeth Peters. He was the 19th child in a family of 20 children. Warren was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Grant Township in Glidden. He worked on the family farm until entering the Merchant Marines and served his country from 1943 to 1945. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

Warren and Elvira Mae (Helmbrecht) were united in marriage at the Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton, Iowa on May 23, 1954. They were blessed with a son Marc who passed away in infancy and three daughters, Jean, Judy and Jayne.

After his military service he returned home and worked in the Glidden creamery for eleven years. He then farmed in Sac County from 1957 to 1989. They moved to Newell in 1991.

Warren was a member of the Emanuel St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton and since moving to Newell also attended the First Congregational Church in Newell. He was a life time member of the Newell Legion and Sac City V.F.W. Warren loved being with and around people. He enjoyed dancing, especially to polka and taught his girls to polka while milking cows. Other activities he enjoyed were fishing, playing cards, playing bingo, gardening and following Newell-Fonda sporting events. Family was very important to him and he dearly enjoyed the annual family reunions and any gathering of friends and family.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Elvira; his children: Jean Elizabeth Sarchet and husband Roger of Newell, Judy Kay Carlton and husband Doug of Newell and Jayne Ann Schumann and husband Dale of Albert City. He is survived by six grandsons, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter. They include Robert Sarchet of Polk City and friend Laura New, Jason and Sarah Sarchet of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin and Luke Sarchet of Newell, Christopher Carlton and Libby Hysell and great-granddaughter, Ellie Joell Carlton of Grimes, Corey Carlton of Burke, South Dakota and friend Molly Luchtel, and Jennifer Schumann and Nathan Schumann of Albert City. His last living sibling is his sister, Lillian Braden of Glidden. along with many extended relatives and family.

Warren was preceded in death by his parents, Jans and Elizebeth Peters, his son Marc and eleven brothers and seven sisters.

T. Q. Smith

T. Q. Smith, age 55, of Nemaha, Iowa, died Sunday, June 24, 2007 after a courageous battle against cancer.
Funeral Services for Mr. Smith will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where there will be a 7:00 p.m. parish vigil service followed by a Legion of Mary rosary.

Thomas “T.Q.” Smith was born July 13, 1951 in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Mike and Mary (Tryon) Smith. T.Q. was baptized as an infant in the Catholic faith at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake and later confirmed his faith as a youth in the same church. He was educated in the Storm Lake Community School, graduating from Storm Lake High School with the Class of 1969.

T.Q. loved nature and being in the rural outdoors. He spent many years partnering with his father as an auctioneer. He often donated his auctioneer services to various benefits throughout the area. T.Q. enjoyed spending time in his garden. He was a modern-day cowboy who was most comfortable when he sat tall in the saddle on one of his beloved Arabian horses. He also loved dogs and had many throughout his life, but he was especially fond of his German shepherds, Aaram, Ace and Sasha. T.Q. was an outgoing and quick-witted man who drew many friends during his life. There was always laughter and a story to tell when T.Q. was present. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Vicki Page of Nemaha; his step-children: Courtney and her husband Davin Engelson of Chicago, Illinois and Tyler Page of Iowa City, Iowa; his mother, Mary Smith of Storm Lake; his brothers: Timothy and Janet Smith of Storm Lake; Ted and Julie Smith of Storm Lake; David and Jane Smith of Hagerstown, Maryland; Tony and Jane Smith of Nemaha; and Dan Smith of Tabor, South Dakota; his sister, Penny and Charlie Neswick of Sioux City, Iowa; extended family and a host of friends.

T.Q. was preceded in death by his father, Mike Smith; and his sister, Becky.

Raymond F. Voss

Raymond F. Voss, age 95, of Schaller, Iowa, died Sunday, June 3, 2007 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral services for Mr. Voss will be held Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, with Reverend David Lyons officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 5, 2007 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00.

Raymond F. Voss was born January 25, 1912 in Odebolt, Iowa, the son of Herman and Cora (Morley) Voss. He was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake, Iowa and later confirmed his faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller. He was raised in the Odebolt area and went to school there, graduating from Odebolt High School.

On May 24, 1932, Raymond was united in marriage to Flora Buehler in Odebolt. They were blessed with seven children: Ray, Don, Janice, Ethlyn, Muriel, Albert and Amos. Flora died in 1969. On December 27, 1972, Raymond married Geraldine Jacobson.

Raymond enjoyed farming and working the land, which he did for much of his life. He was a member of the Rotary Club for many years. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, where he was a Sunday School teacher. He liked to go fishing or hunting and enjoyed a spin around the dance floor. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, as well as a friend to many.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Ray Voss of Schaller; daughter Ethlyn Vogler of Beverly Hills, Michigan; daughter Janice Koenen of Odebolt, Iowa; grandchildren: Cindy, Charlie, Susie, Sandy, Julie, Jim, Jeff, Jon, Mark, Kelly, Scott, Dawn, Jerry, Jr., Kenny, Andrew, Sara and Amanda; many step-children, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Heidemann of Pepin, Wisconsin; extended family and a host of friends.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives; his sons: Don, Albert and Amos; his daughter, Muriel; and one grandchild, Bill.
