Lois Irene Whalen

Lois Irene Whalen, age 86 of Newell, formerly of Schaller died Friday, March 7, 2003 at the Newell Good Samaritan Home. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements, with burial in the Galva Cemetery at a later date.

Funeral services will be at a later date.

Lois Irene Whalen was born May 30, 1916 on a farm north of Galva in Cherokee County to Merritt A. and Mae A. (Walters) Lundberg. She lived with her family in the Galva area. She attended school at Galva and graduated from Galva High School with the class of 1934.

On February 23, 1938 she was united in marriage to Clifford J. Anderson. To this union, two daughters were born, Aletha and Nancy. They farmed north of Galva on his family’s home place until his death when she and her daughters moved to Galva.

On April 23, 1957 she married Francis Whalen when they moved to Schaller. Years later she moved to Storm Lake and resided there until failing health when she went to the Newell Good Samaritan Home.

Lois enjoyed sewing for her family. She did upholstering for many years. She also loved to crochet and to make quilts for family members. She was also willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed.

She is survived by two daughters, Aletha and husband Roger Stephan of Storm Lake and Nancy and husband Dick Kollbaum of Varina; five step-daughters: Pat and Carroll Cone of Storm Lake, Colleen Werkmeister of Schaller, Nancy Epstien of Minnesota, Mickey and Pat Thyme of Missouri, and Mimi and John Rohweeder of Arkansas; seven grandchildren: Randy and Rachel Stephan of Alta, Bryan Stephan and friend Tammie Swanson of Storm Lake, Cheri and Wade Nehring of Newell, Robin Stephan of Storm Lake, Angie and Raul Andrade of Storm Lake, Lonnie and Larry Huegerich of Fonda, and Derek Klima of Fort Dodge; seven great grandchildren: Amanda Stephan of Marshalltown, Aaron, Alex and Aric Stephan of Alta, Justin Nehring of Newell, Nichole and Trevor Huegerich of Fonda; fifteen step-grandchildren; numerous step-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of friends and extended family.

She is also survived by three sisters: Helen Lenhardt of Monroe, Wisconsin, Genevieve and Roy Meyer of Montevideo, Minnesota, and Dorothy Schutler of Cushing; and two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Lundberg of Dakota City, Nebraska, and Ruby Turner of Storm Lake.

Preceded in death by parents, Merritt and Mae Lundberg; first husband Clifford Anderson in 1949; second husband Francis Whalen in 1968; three brothers: Burdette, Harold, and Kenneth; two sisters, Ruth and Agnes; two sons-in-law: Dick Werkmeister and Armin Klima; one granddaughter Lisa Stephan; brothers-in-law: Leonard Schulke, Darrell Schutler, Arlin Lehnhardt, Ray Turner and Vernon Anderson; and one sister-in-law, Leona Lundberg.

Lori Waldner

Lori Ann Waldner, age 41, died Sunday, October 19, 2003 at her home in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 Thursday, October 23 at the United Methodist Church in Newell, with Reverend Dr. Beverlee Bell and Reverend Scott Holmes officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery at Newell, with the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake in charge of arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Wednesday, October 22 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm, where the family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00.

Lori Ann Henrich was born December 20, 1961 at Storm Lake, Iowa to Charles and Gwen (Meseck) Henrich. She was baptized in the United Methodist Church in Newell in 1962 and confirmed there in 1976. As a child, Lori lived with her parents in rural Newell, Iowa, spending her elementary and high school years in the Newell-Providence School system. While in school, Lori was active in sports and music. She had wonderful memories of those years. Lori graduated from Newell-Providence in 1980.

On April 15, 1981, Lori and Aaron J. Waldner were united in marriage at the United Methodist Church in Newell. Their union was blessed with a son, Jonathan. Lori and Aaron created one more wonderful memory when they renewed their wedding vows in a very special ceremony in 1996.

Lori was a loving wife and devoted mother who cherished her family and the time she spent with them. She was a special aunt to her nieces and nephews. Her love for children showed when she taught Sunday School.

Lori liked collecting Precious Moments figurines, pigs, Mickey Mouse and Pooh Bear items and enjoyed spending her free time shopping for these and sometimes, shopping just for the sake of shopping.

Her family knew her to be a decisive individual but a very loving and caring person, with a wonderful dry sense of humor. She was the one who kept everyone in line, the kind of person who did all that her health would permit. Lori was loved by all her family and friends and will be missed every day.

Lori is survived by her husband, Aaron Waldner of Storm Lake; her son, Jonathan J. Waldner of Storm Lake; her mother Gwen Henrich of Storm Lake, her father Charles and stepmother Mary Lou Henrich of West Des Moines; her parents-in-law Jonathan and Dee Waldner of Spencer; brothers Steve and wife Linda Henrich of Arnolds Park and Stan and wife Joleen Henrich of Newell, sister LeAnn and husband Jeff Millar of Angels Camp, CA; brother-in-law Jeremy Waldner and friend Songa Peacock of Forest City, sister-in-law Wendy and husband Jeremiah Gibbons of St. Paul, MN; nieces Alyssa, Kelsey, Jami, Denise and Jaclyn, nephews Logan, Ben, Mark, Nick, Charky, Nathaniel and Brandon; one great-nephew Adan; and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding Lori in death were her grandparents, William, Sr. and Leola Henrich and Erwin and Viola Meseck.

Lee A. Konradi

Lee A. Konradi, age 43, of Storm Lake died Thursday, May 29, 2003 at the Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge following a lengthy illness.

Funeral mass will be held on Monday, June 2nd at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Douglas Klein officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. where the family will be present and where there will be a parish scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

Lee Allan Konradi was born April 12, 1960 in Storm Lake, Iowa the son of Robert B. and Violet M. (Siebold) Konradi. He attended St. Mary’s School.

He worked as a laborer during his lifetime and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Lee enjoyed working on cars and motorcycles and raced stock cars at Alta Raceway.

He is survived by his friend and companion, Doris Anderson of Storm Lake, his mother, Violet Konradi of Storm Lake, a sister, Joy Schuler and her husband, Randy of Storm Lake, a brother, Larry Konradi and his wife, Kathy of Watertown, South Dakota, three sons Matthew and Josh Murray of Mesa, Arizona and Heath Humpil of Tripoli, Iowa. Also surviving are numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.

Lee was preceded in death by his father on November 30, 2002 and by his grandparents.

Lois M. Anderson

Lois M. Anderson of Lake Pointe Villa, Storm Lake passed away Sunday morning, March 30, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 9:30 am, Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Duane Queen officiating. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Tuesday, April 1, 2003 from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present to greet friends from 6:00-8:00 pm.

Lois was the only child born to Nellie (Shaw) and Roy H. Dieterich. She was born July 17, 1916 on the Dieterich farm just northeast of Aurelia and baptized in the Methodist Church in Aurelia. She began grade school in the old schoolhouse, attended grades 1-12 in the new school, graduating with the Aurelia class of 1934. She attended Mrs. Dodge's Business School while living with her Aunt Leota and Uncle John Wetherell in Milwaukee and worked in an insurance office there until her marriage.

On June 13, 1936, she was united in marriage to Robert V. Anderson at the Congregational Church in Aurelia by Pastor Edwin Trigg. Their marriage was blessed with four children.

Lois and Robert farmed in Iowa and Minnesota from 1936 to 1956 when they moved back to Storm Lake, residing at 714 Ontario, 705 Hudson and 115 Hudson Streets.

Lois worked at Skeels Cleaners and for the Pilot Tribune. She and Robert had the "Little Store" in Storm Lake, the Washta Valley Grocery for seven years and the Ideal Café in Pocahontas from September 1984 to November 1986.

During her lifetime, Lois moved seventeen times, each time taking whatever each house had to offer and turning it into a home. She and Robert made lasting friendships wherever they lived and though times were hard, they shared whatever they had with friends and neighbors.

Robert died in 1986. Lois moved to Lake Pointe Villa in September 1998 and resided there until cancer was diagnosed in February of 2003. Up to that time, Lois was an active member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church and the PW Afternoon Circle.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert, sister-in-law Gwen Van Hooser, and brother-in-law August Rudnick on February 21, 2003.

She is survived by sons: Norm and Carolyn Anderson of Yorba Linda, California and Terry and Bobby Anderson of Waverly, Iowa; daughters: Carolyn and Chuck Hoffer of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Sandra and Lorray Jepp of Spencer, Iowa; eight grandsons: Kris, Keith, Ken, Ed, Tracy, Paul, Jeff, and Cory; five granddaughters: Dorinda, Pam D. Pam W., Cheri, and Debbie; eleven great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Vivian Rudnick of Wall Lake, Iowa; and many other very loved relatives and friends.

Jonathon Hale Broders

Jonathon Hale Broders, age 49, of Hitchcock, Texas, formerly Schaller, Iowa, died suddenly on March 4, 2003 at the Columbia Mainland Hospital in Texas City, Texas.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, Iowa with the Reverend David Hagan officiating.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 7, 2003 from 5-7 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller where the family will be present to greet friends.

Jonathon Hale Broders was born January 10, 1954 in Ida Grove to Richard and Barbara (VanGriethuysen) Broders. As a child, he grew up in the Ida Grove, Sac City and Schaller areas.

While living in Sac City, Jonathon attended kindergarten. His family moved to Schaller, where he completed his education and graduated from Schaller High School. While in school, Jonathon competed in various sports, especially excelling in baseball and wrestling.

Jonathon was baptized in February of 1954 in Battle Creek. He received his confirmation from St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller on April 7, 1968.

From 1973-1975, Jonathon served in the U.S.Army. He was initially trained and stationed at Fort Leonardwood in Missouri and then stationed in Alaska. He attained the rank of Corporal while serving his country.

Jonathon worked at the Denison Packing House before attending Iowa Lakes Community College for 2 years in Hotel Management. After receiving his degree, he managed hotels in Virginia, Florida, Arizona, and presently Hitchcock, Texas.

He loved sports, fishing, visiting casinos, and spending time with friends. Jonathon will be remembered for being a good son.

Jonathon is survived by his parents, Richard and Barbara Broders of Schaller; his fiancé, Ida P. Hicks of Hitchcock, Texas; children: Christine Broders of Humble, Texas, Jesse Swanson of Washington D.C., and Julie Ebersole; sister, Megan Ann Broders McGowan and husband, Shawn of Aurelia; niece and nephew, Caiti and Josh McGowan of Aurelia; friend, Julie Johnson; aunts, uncles, and other extended family and friends.

Preceding Jonathon in death are his grandparents, a brother, Tim and three uncles.

Houmphanh Phosy

Houmphanh Phosy, age 71, of Storm Lake died Thursday, July 31, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Rites for Houmphanh Phosy will be Saturday, August 2 at 11:30 a.m. at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Houmphanh Phosy was born on March 2, 1932 in Xayabory, Laos. During his stay in Laos, he had a difficult childhood, as he was an orphan. However, Mr. Phosy was not distracted by those obstacles from pursuing his dreams.

At the age of 18, he served in the Army, and also in the Vietnam War, helping the Americans. In 1959, he was married to Pat Phosy and they had five children together. Because of aiding the Americans, he and his family had a legal right to come to the U. S. and became a U.S. citizen. This was where he started his new life.

On September 11, 1987 he and his family moved to the U. S. A. Living in the United States without knowing English did not discourage him from making the best for his family. He was a wonderful husband and father. The hard work paid off, he was retired in 2002. On June 3, 2003, he became very ill from cancer and finally rests in peace on July 31, 2003 at 1:50 p.m.

Mr. Phosy is survived by his wife and his five children.

Genevieve Carnine

Genevieve Carnine, age 78, of Storm Lake, died May 29, 2003 at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Genevieve Morris was born June 14, 1924 in Galva, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. Andrew and Myrtle (Correll) Morris. She attended school in Galva, graduating from Galva High School in 1942.

On October 31, 1976 Genevieve was united in marriage to Lester V. Carnine in Storm Lake.

Genevieve was a member of the Alta Church of Christ. She had received her baptism in 1974.

Genevieve worked as a sales clerk in Omaha and California in her early years, then at Feldman’s in Storm Lake. She enjoyed reading, church activities and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Lester V. Carnine of Storm Lake; son Robert G. Francis of Seabrook, Texas; daughter Patricia L. Niemeier of Galva; step-sons Leslie Carnine and Barry Carnine; step-daughter Patricia Boatman; sister Margaret Russell of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren: Rachel and husband Chris Swales of Cedar Falls, Michael Niemeier of Okoboji, Jodi Kincaid and Natalie Kincaid, both of Des Moines; step-grandchildren Wendy and husband John Presston of Wichita Falls, Texas and Thad and wife Julie Carnine of Edmund, Oklahoma; great-grandchild Kaeley Kincaid; step great-grandchildren Conner and Caroline Presston and Kailey Carnine; and other extended family members and friends.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. A.S. and Myrtle Morris and brothers Gerald Morris and Burdette Morris.

Emery Zeman

Emery Zeman, age 78, of Storm Lake died Friday, May 16, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2003 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake with Reverend Douglas Haynes officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake with military honors by AMVETS Post #66.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present to greet friends.

Emery Zeman was born June 8, 1924 in Filer, Michigan the son of Ed and Virginia Zeman. The family lived in Two Rivers, Wisconsin where Emery attended school through the 11th grade.

On May 8, 1955 Emery was united in marriage to Mabel Hogrefe at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. He had earlier received his confirmation from Zion Lutheran Church.

Emery served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was sworn in to duty on January 12, 1942 and received an honorable discharge on November 26, 1946. Following his active military career, Emery joined the Merchant Marines for eight years.

Emery worked for Merrill Manufacturing and HyGrade Foods in Storm Lake retiring in 1982. Following his retirement, Emery enjoyed fishing and ballroom dancing.

Emery is survived by his wife, Mabel of Storm Lake; brothers: Robert and Ruth Zeman of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, Jim Zeman of Lompac, California and Harold Zeman of Two Rivers, Wisconsin; sister, Charlotte Fuerbringer of Two Rivers, Wisconsin; brothers and sisters-in-law: Orville and Lilly Sievers of Newell, Iowa, Elmer and Delores Hogrefe of Lowell, Arkansas, Edna Brummer and Alma Hogrefe of Albert City; many nieces and nephews and other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Virginia Zeman, sisters-in-law, Adela Zeman and Jenny Zeman.
