Raymond E. Tongate

Raymond E. "Ray" Tongate, age 88 of Storm Lake died Friday, April 18, 2003 at the Methodist Manor Care Center in Storm Lake after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Marvin Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present to greet friends.

Raymond Earl Tongate was born June 4, 1914 in Hastings, Nebraska the son of Earl A. and Agnes Mae (Abbot) Tongate. He attended schools in Sioux Falls and Valley Springs, South Dakota and then graduated from Rembrandt, Iowa High School in 1932. He attended Buena Vista College and the American Aviation Tech School in Des Moines.

On August 1, 1938 Ray was united in marriage to Elizabeth L. "Betty" Meier in Storm Lake. Betty died on October 24, 2002.

Ray served in the United States Navy as an aviation machinist's mate second class during World War II. He spent his working career in sales, manufacturing and marketing aircraft and had worked for the Carey Salt Company, Thorpe Well Company and Simonsen Manufacturing Company. Ray took great pride in the fact that he had had an opportunity to share his business experience with two young men, helping them to establish their own businesses.

He was an active member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon, he was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, Rotary International and the American Legion.

Ray is survived by a son Don Tongate and his wife, Linda, Nashua, New Hampshire; a daughter Jane Wells and her husband, Dan, Vienna, Virginia; a grandson Christopher Tongate and his wife, Michelle and their children Tyler and Alivia, Peoria, Arizona and other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty and by a sister Treza Mae.

Robert C. "Bob" Ohlund

Robert C. “Bob” Ohlund, age 74, of Storm Lake died September 7, 2003 in the Nebraska Veterans Home in Norfolk, NE.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at 10:30 at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, with Reverend Dr. Beverlee Bell officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Amvets Post #66 will conduct full military rites. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime after 4:00 on Tuesday where the family will greet friends from 6-8 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. A Masonic Service will be held at 7.

Bob was born in Stanton, Nebraska on December 22, 1928 to Gustaf and Ida (Norling) Ohlund. He attended grade school and high school in Stanton, then graduated from Scottsbluff Junior College in 1949. He served his country for four years in the military as a torpedo man’s mate second class in the Navy on the USS Bashaw during the Korean Conflict. During this service he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.

After his discharge from the Navy, Bob attended Wayne State Teacher’s College on the G.I. Bill and graduated with a B.A. in Education in 1956. While at Wayne State, he met Betty Bunger and they were married in Wayne on May 27, 1956. To this union, three children were born: Tamara, Gregory and Barbara.

Bob taught a variety of subjects at the high school and junior high levels, and also coached football, basketball and track at Bloomfield and Tekamah, Nebraska. While teaching at Tekamah, he attended evening classes at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, graduating in 1971 with a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration. During summers, Bob worked for Farmers Mutual Insurance Company as a crop adjuster and joined Farmers Mutual full time in 1973 as a Northwest Iowa Territorial Supervisor.

After retirement, Bob pursued his avid interest in golf, fishing, playing (and sometimes cheating at) cards, and spending time with his family and friends. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, as well as at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center coffee shop. Bob loved “spoofin” his grandkids, cooking up practical jokes for his friends, nick and dime betting on cribbage, watching his grandchildren play sports, eating good food, and laughing at himself—and letting his golf buddies know he was a Swede and proud of it. He is loved and he will be missed.

Bob is survived by his wife, Betty of Storm Lake; his children: Tamara S. Schwartz and husband Dave of Harlan, Iowa, Gregory G. Ohlund and wife Lori of Denison, Iowa, and Barbara Ohlund and husband Joe Monahan of Lincoln, Nebraska; his grandchildren: Bryan, Todd, Derek and Taylor Schwartz, Grant Ohlund, and Dominic Monahan; his siblings Stan Ohlund of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Alex Ohlund of Torrance, California and Blanche Sutherland of Stanton, Nebraska; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Ohlund was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Norman, Clifford and Dr. Arley Ohlund, and his sisters Betty Dobb, Joy Ohlund and Norleen Ohlund.

Robert L. Lamb

Robert Lamb, age 84, of Storm Lake died Sunday, June 15, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, at 11:00a.m. with Reverend Douglas Haynes officiating. Burial will be in the Gilford Township Cemetery in Oak Center, Wabasha County, Minnesota on Thursday, June 19 at 1:00 p.m.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present to greet friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Robert Leslie Lamb was born on the family farm May 4, 1919 in Oak Center, Wabasha County, Minnesota; the son of Harvey and Clara (Gilbert) Lamb. Robert engaged in farming on the family farm with his father. In 1953 after finishing electrical/radio school in Minnesota, Robert relocated to Storm Lake and worked as the chief radio engineer at radio station KAYL until 1975. After the radio station, he worked as a custodian at Storm Lake High School and at the Methodist Manor. He retired in 1981.

Robert married Beatrice Atkinson on September 19, 1948. Robert married Esther (Gerke) Stieghorst, widow of Ray Stieghorst on May 24, 1980. Robert and Esther enjoyed traveling around the United States and visited many sights.

Robert enjoyed his grandchildren, participating in camera club, working on amateur radio, gardening, and attending church functions. One fun activity was playing dominoes with the grandchildren. Because of his interest in electronics, he was continually building radio components for his Ham Radio Station KØEVC. He was the key member of the local Ham radio club. You would find him constantly talking to other radio enthusiasts from his radio in the basement of his home. He often told stories of the many people he would encounter in his conversations.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Clara Lamb; an infant son; his first wife Beatrice (Atkinson) Lamb; one granddaughter; sister Edith Meyer; and brother Harold Lamb.

He is survived by his wife, Esther Lamb of Storm Lake; brother, Alfred and wife Vera Lamb; brother, Arliss Lamb; one daughter, Nancy and husband Ramon Mayo of New York; two sons, Bill and wife Mary Lamb of Ocala, Florida and Andy and wife Mary Lamb of Tucson, Arizona; three step-daughters, Diane and husband Gary Christiansen of Peterson, Donna and husband Dave Dose of Storm Lake, and Darlene and husband Blaine Perry of Aurelia; 18 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

Ruth Fairchild

Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Ruth Geneal Kenney Fox Fairchild, age 77, passed away September 15, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center after a courageous battle with a lingering illness.

She was born January 17, 1926, in Gunnison, Utah, to Leo Amasa and Sarah Mable Levie Kenney. She married Cleo Lee Fox, November 29, 1941, in Reno, Nevada. They had one child, Neldon Lee Fox. They divorced, November 8, 1944. She married Leslie Harold Fairchild, February 26, 1946, in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had two children, Beth Geneal Fairchild Close and Marcia Ann Fairchild Hagar. Harold died February 20, 1998.

As a child she lived with her parents at Sevier and Gunnison, Utah, attending school through the 9th grade. Later they moved to Salt Lake City, where she attended Granite High School.

Ruth was a loving wife and devoted mother, cherishing the times that were spent with her family. She spent many years as a homemaker and was known as a very good cook. She was very pleased to have won first place at the Clay County Fair for her lemon meringue pie. Ruth enjoyed gardening and loved all flowers, especially roses and peonies. She liked to spend her spare time listening to the older country music songs.

Ruth and Harold liked to travel when possible and they liked to recall special memories of the early 1960’s, when they attended the motorcycle rallies in Sturgis, South Dakota. Ruth worked at the canning factory and at Vilas Turkey Plant in Storm Lake.

Ruth and Harold lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, Storm Lake, Iowa, El Monte, California and finally settled in Storm Lake.

Ruth was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Ruth is survived by her son, Neldon Lee Fox of Orem, Utah and two daughters, Beth Geneal Fairchild Close of Orem, Utah and Marcia Fairchild (Jerry) Hager of Richfield, Minnesota; grandchildren John Close, Tommy Close, Debbie Close (Rusty) Bench, Rickie Close, Randy (Sarah) Hager, Richard (Jennifer) Hager, Russell Hager, RaLene Fox (David) Wood, Marlene Fox (Kent) Clayson, RaeLee Fox (Bill) Price and Christon Fox; 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter; brothers Delmar Leo Kenney, June Dale Kenney and Adrean Jay Kenney. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Harold, her parents and three brothers, Rex Loren Kenney, Fred Amasa Kenney and Raldon Clen Kenney.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 20, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with President Kent Radford officiating.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Friday, September 19, 2003, where the family will be present until 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Interment will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery, Storm Lake, Iowa.

Ruth F. Britt

Ruth F. Britt, age 94, of Storm Lake passed away Saturday, May 3, 2003 at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 5, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hope Evangelical Free Church in Storm Lake, Iowa with the Reverend Jim Hofman officiating.

Visitation will begin Monday, at noon prior to service time at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth Florence Wenell was born on January 25, 1909, to Carl and Ida (Ross) Wenell in Albert City, Iowa. Ruth grew up on the family farm and attended country school. She worked on the farm and for other people until her marriage. She was the tenth child of eleven children.

Ruth married W. Lonnie Britt on November 3, 1928. They lived in Albert City and moved to a farm in the area. Eventually, they farmed in the Linn Grove, Iowa, area until moving to Storm Lake in 1957. Ruth worked at Constable Drug Store until going to Lee’s Variety Store. She retired from there as the manager of the store.

The greatest joy for Ruth was having the children, grandchildren, and the great-grandchildren in her home. She enjoyed making quilts, sewing, and crocheting for the family. She and Lonnie lived at their home in Storm Lake until they were no longer able to live on their own. They moved to Methodist Manor at that time.

Ruth is survived by daughter, Ilona and husband LaVerne Koster of Chester; daughter Eleanor and husband Harold Engen of Iowa City; daughter Deloris Britt of Storm Lake; daughter Shirley Britt of Fairmont, MN; daughter-in-law Darlene Britt of Alexandria, MN; sisters-in-law Lucy Walker of Monticello, KY and Mae Lovell of Rockford IL; plus grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Lonnie; her son, William J.; grandson, Donald Koster; great-grandson, Trevor Huntley; her parents, grandparents, siblings and spouses.

Philip Gilchrist Jarnagin

Philip G. Jarnagin, age 98, long-time Storm Lake newspaper publisher and civic leader died Thursday, April 3, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 7th at 10:30 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home on Sunday after 12 noon where the family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m.

Philip Gilchrist Jarnagin was born May 3, 1904 in Cedar Falls, Iowa the son of William C. and Jean (Gilchrist) Jarnagin. William Jarnagin served Des Moines daily newspapers before moving his family to Storm Lake in 1921. Phil graduated from West Des Moines high school in 1921. He attended Buena Vista College for one semester in 1924 and graduated from Drake University in 1926.

He married Jennette M. Olsen, the daughter of A.P. and Anna Olsen of Storm Lake at Lakeside Presbyterian Church on September 6, 1927. Their only child Jean Anne Seagren died on February 15, 1982.

Phil’s journalistic career began with the Drake Delphic and the Des Moines Register sports desk. He worked Fairall Advertising Agency in Des Moines before joining his father at the Storm Lake Pilot-Tribune in 1930. He served the Spencer News-Herald in 1931 and became co-publisher of the Sheldon Sun in 1931, and sold it in 1943 to rejoin his father at the Storm Lake Register and the Pilot-Tribune. He was named Iowa Master Editor-Publisher in 1965, he retired in 1970.

He was a member of the board of directors of Methodist Manor for 16 years and was chairman of five years until 1979. Following his wife’s illness and death he moved to Methodist Manor in August 1997.

Phil was a past president of the Sheldon and Storm Lake Kiwanis clubs with over 56 years of perfect attendance. He was tournament champion at the Sheldon Golf Club in 1937.

Phil was always involved in community activities. He was past secretary of the Buena Vista University Board of Trustees and held memberships in the Chamber of Commerce, Izaak Walton League, Elks Lodge, Lake Creek Country Club, the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, the Lake Preservation Association and the Republican Party.

Survivors include his grandchildren and great grandchildren: Carol Seagren Hanthorne and her husband, James, Spencer, Iowa, Reverend Kirk Seagren and his wife, Reverend Lilian Seagren and their daughter, Jane Anne, Guthrie Center, Iowa and Reverend William K. Seagren and his wife, Jenny and their children, Hannah, Nate and Rachel, Philomath, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jennette on September 16, 1996, by his daughter, Jean Anne and by his son-in-law, Bernard Seagren and by his sister, Jane Reid.

Marie K. Stern

Marie K. Stern, age 87 of Storm Lake passed away at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa on March 12, 2003 following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am, Saturday, March 15, 2003 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Pastor Steven Schulz officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will begin after 2:00 pm, Friday, March 14, 2003 with the family present to greet friends from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Marie Kathryn Weitzel was born on December 6, 1915 in Sac County to Henry and Ruth (Andrews) Weitzel. She attended school in Early, Juniata, and Hayes Consolidated School of Storm Lake, Iowa. She quit school following 10th grade to help support her family by hiring out as a housekeeper.

On October 5, 1937 she was united in marriage to Alvin J. Stern at the Lutheran Parsonage in Waverly, Iowa. This union was blessed with two children, Robert and Bonnie. They farmed in Butler County, the Truesdale, Hanover, Aurelia, and Alta areas before settling west of Storm Lake in 1950. Marie worked seasonally at the canning factory and Dekalb Seed Corn. She retired from Vern’s Variety in 1977 after working there for over 15 years.

In the early years, she raised and sold rabbits, parakeets, and chinchillas. Her favorite pastimes were gardening and fishing. For many years, she enjoyed making and selling craft items. Her lastest passion was bingo. She divided her time between Mesa, Arizona and Storm Lake for the last ten years.

Marie is survived by her son Robert and wife Bonnie Stern of Storm Lake; daughter Bonnie and husband Thomas Augard of Cherokee; four grandsons; five great grandchildren; sisters: Dorothy Jarvis of Sac City, Doris and husband Loran McBride of Early, and Elaine and husband Chuck Goodman of Alta; sister-in-law Dorothy Weitzel of Storm Lake; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Marie in death are her parents, Henry and Ruth Weitzel; husband, Alvin; grandson, Michael Stern; brother, Melvin Weitzel; sister, Margaret Miller; and a special friend, Ken Foell.

Ruth Witte

Ruth Anna Witte, age 83, of Schaller died Friday, November 7, 2003 at the Willow Dale Willness village in Battle Creek, Iowa.

Funeral services for Ruth Witte will be held on Monday, November 10, 2003 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, with Reverend John Schauer officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 9, 2003 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Ruth Wendel was born on September 27, 1920 to Albert and Matilda (Fett) Wendel, on a farm north of Schaller. She attended school in Schaller and graduated from Schaller High School.

Ruth worked as a bookkeeper at the Schaller Telephone Company until she married Lee Witte on June 4, 1951. To this union, two children were born.

She was an active lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Schaller where she was involved in Ladies Aid. She also belonged to several clubs including Arts & Crafts and C-Con Club.

Ruth is survived by a son, Lyle Witte and wife Vicki of Sutherland; daughter Valerie Ladwig and husband Rick of Ida Grove; two granddaughters Stephanie and Melonie; brother Floyd Wendel and wife Hilda of Schaller; sister Arletta Stille and husband Kenny of Schaller; and many nieces and nephews.

Other survivors include five brothers-in-law: Edward Witte of Schaller, Burdette Witte and wife Viola of Ida Grove, Don Witte and wife Wilma of Bentonville, Arkansas, Emmit Witte and wife Laura of Schaller, and George Witte and wife Janice of Schaller; and four sisters-in-law: Esther Patterson of Britton, South Dakota, Irene Carstensen of Ida Grove, Leona Witte of Wahoo, Nebraska and Joyce Witte of Sac City.

Preceding Ruth in death are her husband Lee, granddaughter Brandi and sister Bernetta Wogahn.
