Merle Yearous

Merle Yearous, age 69, of Holstein, Iowa died Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at the Holstein Good Samaritan Center.

Memorial Services will be Friday, July 30, 2004 at 10:30 at the Galva United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery at Balaton, Minnesota. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

A time of gathering will be held at the Galva United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 29, 2004, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Merle Marie Elizabeth Huck was born October 26, 1934 to Clarence Andrew and Irene Agnes (Meyer) Huck at Alma, Iowa. She was baptized at her parents’ home on August 11, 1935 and confirmed in St. Peter Lutheran Church in Alma. Merle spent her childhood in her parents’ home in Howard County, Iowa where she attended school, until the family moved to Russell, Minnesota in 1951.

On April 26, 1959, Merle was united in marriage to Gene Albion Yearous at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Balaton, Minnesota. Three children blessed their union: Bradley, Jackie and Gena. Merle and Gene celebrated 45 wonderful years together in April this year. They are members of Galva United Methodist Church.

Merle was a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother who spent many happy years making a warm and comfortable home for her family, whom she treasured. Of course, she delighted in her grandchildren and loved to spend time with them. In her spare time, Merle enjoyed bowling and dancing. She liked to spend time outdoors in her garden and spent many an hour watching and feeding her feathered friends. She was especially happy to spot cardinals, as they were her favorite birds.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Gene of Holstein; son, Bradley and wife Julie (Kalin) Yearous of Galva; daughters: Jackie Yearous of Holstein and Gena Yearous of Balaton, Minnesota; grandchildren: Amy Yearous, Jason Yearous, Mallory Yearous, Kyle Yearous, Katie Yearous, Maggie Yearous and Lauren Yearous; one brother, Clarence and wife Mary Ann Huck of Russell, Minnesota one sister, Marjorie and husband Russell Mathews of Canby, Minnesota; and many other relatives and a host of friends.

Preceding Merle in death were her parents; her older sister, Margaret Anderson; and an infant granddaughter, Elizabeth Yearous.

Bernard “Bud” McDermott

Bernard “Bud” McDermott, age 81 of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, April 23, 2005 at Buena Vista Manor Care Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, April 27, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Mary in Storm Lake, with Father Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial with full military rites by the Alta VFW will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2005, where a Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 3:30 pm and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm.

Bud was born November 10, 1923 in Storm Lake, Iowa to John B. and Alma (Garrison) McDermott. He received his education in the Storm Lake school system, graduating from high school in 1941. He proudly served his country as a member of the Army Air Force during World War II. Bud was a patriot and long-time member of the VFW. He was a faithful and active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake where he served as a Eucharistic minister.

On October 22, 1946, Bud was united in marriage to Imelda Pitts in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with two sons: John and Alan, and six daughters: Peg, Mary, Connie, Georgia, Cindy and Denise.

Bud was employed at the Hy-Grade plant in Storm Lake for many years in the maintenance area. He retired in 1981 at the age of 59 years. He liked working on building projects in his spare time.

He was a devoted father and husband who loved to spend time with his family. The McDermotts liked to go camping and enjoyed fishing. Bud always had the patience to help the kids bait their hooks and see that they had a good time. He was a kind and good person who went out of his way to be helpful to elderly people. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: John McDermott (Denise) of Bettendorf, Iowa, Alan McDermott (Stacy) of LeMars, Iowa, Peg Gutta of Anamosa, Iowa, Mary (Dennis) Hurd of Bettendorf, Iowa, Connie (Leonard) Schimmel of Rock Island, Illinois, Georgia (Carl) Rivenbark of Jensen Beach, Florida, Cindy (Carl) Hansen of Storm Lake, and Denise McDermott and special friend, David Eliason, of Alta, Iowa; grandchildren: John Gutta, Michael, Jody and Kelly Hurd, Angela Thomas, Julie Madden, Betsy Semotan, Justin and Seth Hansen, Nyna Anderson, Adam and Jessica McDermott, Blair Syndergaard, Rachel and Breana McDermott; six great-grandchildren; sister Verna “Toots” Stevens of Des Moines, Iowa; brothers- and sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Imelda.

Joan Schulz

Joan Marie Schulz, 69, of Storm Lake, died Friday, November 25, 2005 from complications of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Palmer, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held Monday, November 28, 2005 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Joan Marie Peters was born June 26, 1936 in a rural farmhouse in Pocahontas County, Iowa to Carl and Eldora Peters. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. John Lutheran Church near Palmer.

She attended country school and graduated from Manson High School. She attended Wartburg College for two years and obtained a degree to teach elementary school. She taught fourth grade 2 years in Iowa Falls and first grade 2 years in Strawberry Point.

On June 8, 1958, she was united in marriage to Walter Schulz, whom she met at Wartburg College during freshman orientation when he asked her to wash his car. The newlyweds made their home initially in New York City. They moved to Strawberry Point, Iowa and in 1960, moved to Storm Lake. Since the school system would not hire married women, they decided to start a family. Three children were born of the marriage: Roger, Susan, and Jennifer. Joan stayed home with the children until 1985, when she began work as a secretary at Buena Vista University until she retired in 1998.

Joan enjoyed doing volunteer work in many settings. She served as a scout leader, 4-H leader, and hospital coffee shop volunteer. She was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and the women’s organization and served a variety of offices. She taught Sunday School, made quilts for Lutheran World Relief, assembled layette kits, and enjoyed being a Stephen’s Minister.

Joan will be remembered for helping others. She cooked and delivered meals and cinnamon rolls to friends and church members. She served a home-cooked, candlelight dinner for 30 residents at Methodist Manor. She invited widows and widowers to her home for holidays and dinners. She made and sent many cards to mark people’s special events.

Joan was an expert hand quilter and her children treasure the wall hangings and quilts she gave them. She was an avid Scrabble player with her daughters. She was a sports fan and especially enjoyed watching her son and grandchildren play basketball and other sports. Her children and grandchildren were treasured by her. For years, she enjoyed meeting with five close friends in a weekly Bible study.

After her retirement, she and Walt enjoyed wintering with many friends in Apache Junction, Arizona. She loved the game of Pickleball and won the women’s doubles tournament more than a year after developing ALS. Joan courageously fought the disease and focused positively on the things she could do rather than on her losses.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Carl and Eldora Peters, and her sister, Norma Carver. She is survived by her husband, Walt; her son Roger Schulz & wife Carla of Cedar Rapids and their children, John, Kate, and Mark; her daughter Sue Maher & husband Mark of Cleveland Heights, Ohio and their son, Jacob; and her daughter Jenny Schulz of Cedar Rapids.

Cecil P. Morgan

Cecil Morgan, age 86, of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, August 23, 2007 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, surrounded by his devoted wife of 61 years, Marion, and his family.
Services will be held Monday, August 27, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Rembrandt, Iowa, with Reverend Mark Youngquist officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call on Sunday, August 26, 2007 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present.

Cecil Paul Morgan was born April 6, 1921 in Lamar, Colorado to Jesse and Myrtle (Ruby) Morgan. Cecil’s family moved to Guthrie, Oklahoma, and later to Palo Alto County, Iowa, where Cecil attended Palo Alto Country Schools.

Cecil worked as a farmhand until departing for military service. He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1944. Following his discharge, Cecil returned home and met the love of his life – Marion. They were married in 1946. Together they farmed in Palo Alto, Clay, and Buena Vista counties in Iowa, settling on a farm southwest of Rembrandt, Iowa in 1963 where they farmed until their retirement in 1987. Cecil and Marion then moved into Storm Lake.

Cecil and Marion were blessed with six children: James, Charles, Kenneth, Judy, Rodney and Kathy.

Cecil most enjoyed taking many countryside drives, and working on his farm machinery. He especially treasured the time he spent with his six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Cecil was a member of the American Legion as well as Farm Bureau.

Those who will cherish his memory are his wife, Marion; his children: Chuck of Mondovi, Wisconsin; Ken and Rita of Cherokee, Iowa; Judy Freeman of Madrid, Iowa; Rod and Laura of Rembrandt; and Kathy of Cody, Wyoming; his grandchildren: Brad and Shawna of Indianola, Iowa; Josh of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Jerry and Jenifer of Egan, Minnesota; Mary and Amy, both of Rembrandt; his great-grandchildren, Hunter and Brady Freeman of Indianola, Iowa; his sister, Violet Chism of Albia, Iowa; his special aunt, Grace Oelsen of Fowler, Colorado; two brothers-in-law, eight sisters-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

Cecil was preceded in death by his parents; his son, James; his granddaughter, Kristi Freeman; his brother, Hugh; and his sister, Blanche Wood.

Memorials may be directed to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Hospice Program and/or Faith, Hope, and Charity, both in Storm Lake.

Eric Jensen

Eric M. Jensen, age 73, of Newell died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at his home in Newell.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. There will be Full Military Rites by the Newell American Legion Post #193. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Eric M. Jensen was born on September 17, 1930 to Einar and Elsie (Magelssen) Jensen at Newell, Iowa. He was baptized in Rushford, MN, and later confirmed at Nain Lutheran at Newell. Eric spent his childhood years with his parents on their farm outside of Newell. He attended school in the Newell-Providence school system, where he graduated from high school with the Class of 1948.

Eric enlisted in the service on January 11, 1951 and served as a Sergeant with the 596th Sig spt Company for two years in Germany during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on December 16, 1953.

On May 28, 1955 Eric was united in marriage to Elise Stoltenberg in San Francisco, California. This union was blessed with a daughter, Eileen. The Jensens also enjoyed having a foreign exchange student, Tuomo Mörä from Finland, for one year from August 1979 through August 1980.

Eric spent most of his life as a farmer, working the land until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, where he served as a former church treasurer. Eric enjoyed woodworking and built custom cabinets in many homes in Newell. He was an outgoing person who liked to be around people, and enjoyed having coffee and socializing at the local elevator coop.

Eric loved his family and cherished every moment he could spend with them. His family loved him and will miss him daily.

Survivors include his wife Elise of Newell; his daughter Eileen and husband Kurt Wilson of Bellevue, NE; grandchildren Christina and Robert Wilson, “adopted” son Tuomo Mörä of Finland, and many other relatives and friends.

Eric was preceded in death by his parents, Einar and Elsie Jensen.

Irma J. Harris

Irma J. Harris, age 77, of Des Moines formerly of Newell, passed away Friday, May 23, 2003 at Genesis Care Center in Des Moines, Iowa following a lengthy illness.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Newell. Rev. Geneva Parsons will be officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Irma Jean Carlson Harris was born November 27, 1925, in Sioux Rapids the daughter of Oscar and Blanche Dunlap Carlson. She graduated from Linn Grove High School and attended Buena Vista College. She taught country school near Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Irma was united in marriage to Edwin Harris on February 21, 1954 at their farm home, Newell.

In 1970, she received her LPN degree from Iowa Central Community College, Fort Dodge. She was employed at Buena Vista North Manor. Following their retirement, Irma and Edwin enjoyed traveling in their motor home and spending winters in Tucson, Arizona.

Irma enjoyed knitting and gave many afghans, slippers and stocking caps to relatives and friends.

Playing Bingo was one of her favorite pastimes in addition to the morning coffee with friends.

Her family was very important to her especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter Donna Davis and friend Kasey Kiplinger, Des Moines, Iowa, three grandsons: Jeffrey and Audra Davis, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Tony and Robbie Davis, Des Moines and four great grandchildren; step daughter Charlene and Jim Breazeale, Pleasantville, Iowa, three step grandsons: Steve, Shane and Shawn Breazeale, and five step great grandchildren; brothers: Oliver and Betty Carlson, Algona, Glen and Nola Carlson, Storm Lake, Oscar and Marilyn Carlson, Onalaska, Wisconsin, Don and Deb Carlson, Fort Dodge, Larry and Sheryl Carlson, Alta; one sister, Donna Stelling, Pocahontas and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband Edwin (2000), son James Lee Master (1967), infant granddaughter, parents Oscar and Blanche Carlson, brother Arvid Carlson, brother-in-law Hans Stelling, sister-in-law Jan Carlson and two nephews Bill Carlson and Rory Carlson.

June F. Rice

June Francis Rice, age 79, of Storm Lake died Friday April 18, 2003 at her home in Storm Lake after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 23rd at 10:30 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the LeRoy City Cemetery in LeRoy, Minnesota.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.

There will be a graveside service at 10:30 on Thursday at the LeRoy Cemetery in LeRoy, MN under the direction of Hutchins Funeral Home in LeRoy. MN.

June Francis Konradi was born November 29,1923 in Ida County, Iowa the daughter of Jake and Winnie (Wimberly) Konradi. She began her education attending country school in Ida County through the 8th grade and Battle Creek High School through the 11th grade.

On March 6, 1943 June was united in marriage to Glen Rice in South Sioux City, Nebraska.

June was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. She had received her baptism from the Catholic Church in Ida Grove in 1924. During her married years, June was a housewife and enjoyed playing BINGO.

Survivors include her husband Glen Rice of Storm Lake; sons: Steve Rice of Sioux Rapids, Dennis (Deb) Rice of LeRoy, Minnesota, Kenny Rice of Sparks, Nevada and Jason (Elizabeth) Rice; brother, Clyde Konradi of Storm Lake; sisters: Helen Ellis of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Dorine Oehler of Storm Lake; nineteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; and numerous other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Winnie Konradi; sons: Timmy Rice, Glen "Sonny"Rice, and Jim Rice; brothers, Floyd, Earl, and Bobby Konradi; and sister, Dorthy Mae Schuning.

Alice R. Shea

Alice R. Shea, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Thursday, July 29, 2004 at her home in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at 12:30 pm at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home where the family will greet friends from 6:00-8:00 pm.

Alice R. (Thutt) Shea was born in Goshen, Indiana on March 12, 1912, the older of two daughters born to Rev. Albert Thutt and Marie (Cramer) Thutt. The family moved to Iowa during her pre-school years and she attended school at Cherokee, and Clarinda, graduating from Clarinda High School in 1929, and in 1933 from The University of Michigan with a degree in Education. She taught school for four years in Greenfield, Iowa and for two years in Ames and then married Dr. Shea.

They spent a year in LaCrosse, Wisconsin while he was interning there. Then when he entered the Army, they moved to Carmel, California until he went overseas in April 1943, when she returned to the Midwest to live with her parents in Tarkio, Missouri.

Alice gave birth to a girl, Patricia in November 1943.

When Dr. Shea returned to the States in 1945, she joined him in Brigham, Utah, at The Bushnell General Hospital while he recovered from an illness resulting from his Army service in the Pacific.

In 1946, they settled in Storm Lake, where she lived until she passed away on July 29, 2004.

Alice gave birth to another girl, Susan, in February 1948 and to a third girl, Jean Ann in December of 1949.

Her first priority was always her family, which she cared for with the greatest kind of loving devotion, patience and wisdom. She was a capable community volunteer and was a faithful worker in the following organizations: Presbyterian Church, Chapter EP, PEO, Questors, PTA, Cosmopolitan Club and Ingleside and countless hours with the BVRMC Auxillary.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mary Aline Veline; and one niece, Nancy Veline.

She is survived by her husband; three daughters and their spouses: Patricia and Joe McPherson of Omaha, Nebraska, Susan and John Stewart of Billings, Montana and Ann and Pete Stahl of Fort Worth, Texas; five grandchildren: Kristofer Stewart and wife Sarah of Iowa City, Toby Stewart and wife Kirsten of Lincoln, Nebraska, Angela Stahl Smith and husband Bill of Dallas, Texas, Mathew Stahl of Fort Worth, Texas, and Adam Stahl of Fort Worth, Texas; one great grandchild, Naomi Stewart of Iowa City; and one niece, Phyllis Currans and husband Jim of Denver, Colorado, and their two children, Beth and Tony and his wife Loren.
