Leota Neppl

Leota Neppl, age 90, of Storm Lake and formerly of Fonda, Iowa, died Monday, June 18, 2007 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Neppl will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Fonda. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Friday anytime after 5:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A vigil service will be held at 6:00 p.m., followed by recitation of the Legion of Mary Rosary at 7:00, both at the funeral home. Leota was born February 3, 1917 in Mt. Carmel, Iowa, the daughter of Henry J. and Anna (Goecke) Otto. She was baptized as an infant in the Catholic faith at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and later confirmed her faith as a youth at the same church. She attended grade school at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic School before graduating from Carroll High School in 1934. She continued her education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and received her teaching certificate to teach Rural School (Normal Training Degree). She taught rural school for the next three years.

On May 24, 1938, Leota was united in holy matrimony to Everett Neppl at her church in Mt. Carmel. The couple was blessed with five children. They lived and farmed in Carroll County for 12 years and in the Fonda area for 30 years. After retiring in 1980, Everett and Leota moved to Storm Lake. They enjoyed traveling until Everett’s health declined.

Leota was a loving and devoted wife and mother who cherished her family. She was a faithful Catholic and lived her life to reflect her faith. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, a past member of the Holy Family Society, and a “praying” member of the Legion of Mary. She enjoyed playing cards, walking and reading.

Survivors include her two sons: James Neppl and wife Diane of Rock Island, Illinois; and Roger Neppl and wife Jennifer of Evergreen, Colorado; her two daughters: Kay Sterbick of Des Moines, Iowa; and Diane Baskerville and husband Roger of Washington, Kansas; sixteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; other extended family and many friends.

Leota was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett; her son, Gary; her twin brother, Leo; her brother, Art; and her sisters: Loretta, Marie, Agnes and Bernadette.

Kenneth W. Miller

Kenneth W. Miller, age 90, a longtime farmer from the Storm Lake, Iowa area, died Monday, October 1, 2007 at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa.

Services for Mr. Miller are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 4, 2007 at the Church of Christ in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present.

Kenneth William Miller was born September 4, 1917 at Osceola, Iowa, the son of George and Mamie (Claypool) Miller. His early years were spent in the Winterset, Iowa area before the family moved to Sulphur Springs, Iowa, where Kenneth went to school through the 10th grade.

On December 15, 1940, Kenneth was united in marriage to Maxine C. Hansen. The couple was blessed with three children: Shirley, Karen and Bruce. Kenneth was a dairy farmer his entire adult life until his retirement in 1989. He was a long-time, faithful member of the Church of Christ in Storm Lake, where he had served as a deacon. He was a member of the Truesdale Co-op Board of Directors for several years. He enjoyed golf and bowling and took great pleasure in having coffee with his farmer friends. Kenneth’s family was very dear to him and in his later years, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart. He will be missed daily by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years, Maxine, of Storm Lake; daughter Shirley McCormack and husband Aubrey of Virginia Beach, Virginia; daughter Karen Eickhoff of Spencer; and son Bruce Miller and wife Sandra of Marion, Iowa; grandchildren: Annette Spears and husband Steve, Doug Eickhoff and wife Deon, Brent Miller and wife Jodie, Kyle Miller, Kelly Limbach and husband John, and Shannon McCormack; great-grandchildren: Meghan Spears, Amber Spears, Lakyn Spears, Austin Eickhoff, Jalen Thompkins, Chloe Limbach, Sierra Lynn Roberts, Luke Rutledge, Logan Rutledge and Lawson Rutledge; brother John Miller of Phoenix, Arizona; extended family and many friends.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Russell Miller, Les Miller and Cecil Miller; son-in-law Steve Eickhoff; and grandson Craig Eickhoff.

Flora M. Rice

Flora Rice, age 100, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Friday, June 22, 2007 at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.
Funeral Service will be Monday, June 25, 2007 at 10:30 am at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime after 4:00 on Sunday, June 24, 2007, where the family will be present from 6-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. An Eastern Star Service will be held at 7:30 pm.

Flora Mary Taylor was born February 6, 1907 in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, to Joseph Telesphere and Marie (Roy) Taylor. She joined one sister, Mary Ann, and one brother, Bill, prior to the family moving to Iroquois, Illinois. The Taylor family then welcomed three more children: Delia, Ed and Albert. The entire family eventually moved by train to the Rembrandt, Iowa area.

On April 16, 1927, Flora was united in marriage to Everett Rice in the Methodist Church in Fort Dodge, Iowa. This union was blessed with five children: Marjorie, Robert, Richard, Edward and Thomas. They lived their entire married life in Storm Lake. Initially, the family lived in a house on the south side of Storm Lake from 1927 to 1945, and then to the farm in 1945.

Flora was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church as well as a 50 year member of Eastern Star. She shared many stories of her life over the years with her family and friends.

Everett and Flora shared many adventures and memories over their 54 years of marriage. They traveled to 46 of the 50 states, as well as embarking on various cruises. Her greatest blessing was her family. She found much pleasure in their visits and joy in their company.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Marjorie Otto and her husband Arlin of Lakeside, Iowa; four sons: Robert Rice and his wife Dorothy of Denison, Iowa, Richard Rice and his wife Monica of Storm Lake, Edward Rice and Loa of Alta, Iowa and Thomas Rice and his wife Doris of Storm Lake; 19 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; many extended family and friends.

Flora was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett; her five siblings: Mary Ann, Bill, Delia, Ed and Albert; two great grandchildren: Christopher Allen and April Rice.

Darold W. Veerhusen

Darold W. Veerhusen, age 78, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Sunday, July 29, 2007 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake, with Reverends Tom Hinshaw and Kory Kleinsasser officiating. Interment will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery with military rites performed by Alta VFW Post #6172. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Monday, July 30, 2007 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00.

Darold Walter Veerhusen was born in Fonda, Iowa, on May 23, 1929 to George and Pearl (Sweat) Veerhusen. He received his education in the Fonda school district. Following graduation from Fonda High School, Darold continued his education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.

On February 20, 1951, Darold married Rosalie DeVolder. They were blessed with two children: Dan and Laurie.

Darold served in the Army National Guard for over 25 years. He was very proud of “his boys” in the Guard. Following retirement from his full time services in the Guard, Darold owned and operated the Lake Hardware and Sporting Goods store in Storm Lake for many years. In addition, he also drove a school bus and worked at Merrill Manufacturing of Storm Lake. Darold was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also was instrumental with the Operation Christmas Child Project of Samaritan’s Purse.

Survivors include his wife, Rosalie Veerhusen of Storm Lake; two children: Dan Veerhusen and his wife Sara of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Laurie Wilcox and her husband Carl of Haxtun, Colorado; two grandchildren: Andrea Wilcox and Matthew Wilcox of Haxtun, Colorado; one sister, Mary Lou Sanders of Bettendorf, Iowa; other extended family and friends.

Darold was preceded in death by his parents and brothers-in-law, Joe Sanders, Mel Miller and John DeVolder.

Velma Liechti

Velma (Vee) Liechti, age 92, of Newell, Iowa died Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at the Good Samaritan Center in Newell.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 20, 2006 at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will follow at Newell Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to service time.

Velma Schmidt was born February 3, 1914 in Newell, Iowa to Petrea and Nis (Jensen) Schmidt. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell and later confirmed her faith at that same church as a youth. Vee received her education in the Newell community; it is known she attended country school, however record of her schooling after that is unclear.

In November of 1937, Vee was united in marriage to Roy Liechti. She was a lifelong, faithful member of Nain Lutheran, where she was a Sunday School teacher in earlier years. Vee loved children and was a special aunt to her nieces and nephews. She will be remembered as a good-natured, caring person by all who knew her.

Left to cherish her memory are two nieces, two nephews, several great-nieces and great-nephews; extended family and friends. Vee was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; her only brother, Peter; and four sisters: Maria, Rebecca, Otillia and Edith.

Dorothy Benson

Dorothy Alice Benson, age 87, of Albuquerque, New Mexico and formerly of Marathon, Iowa, died Monday, May 26, 2008 in Mesa, Arizona.

Funeral services for Mrs. Benson will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Marathon. Burial will be in Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. The Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Friday, May 30, 2008 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present. An Eastern Star service will be presented by the Storm Lake Eastern Star Chapter #209 at 7:00 p.m. during the visitation hours at the funeral home. Memorials in Dorothy’s honor may be directed to the United Methodist Church in Marathon.

Dorothy was born in Odebolt, Iowa on May 13, 1921, the daughter of Russell and Bertha Krusenstjerna. She was baptized and confirmed in the Odebolt Presbyterian Church. Dorothy attended grade school in Odebolt and graduated from high school in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She received her teaching certification from Iowa State Teachers’ College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, which is now the University of Northern Iowa. Dorothy then taught fourth grade in Marathon. While teaching, Dorothy met Delford Benson, and they were united in marriage on April 23, 1943.

Active in Eastern Star, Tuesday Study Club, 4-H, and the Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, Dorothy enriched the Marathon community until the Bensons moved to Albuquerque in 1978. She helped develop the Vineyard Community in Albuquerque and was also active in Chapter X of PEO, Ada Chapter of Eastern Star, Sunbonnet Shop, and First Presbyterian Church. Dorothy was a tireless volunteer for many worthwhile causes her entire life. In addition to traveling extensively throughout the world, Dorothy and Delford enjoyed the last ten winters at Leisure World in Mesa, Arizona.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Delford; three children: Kathie (Roy) Leeper and Kirk (Lynn Rogers) Benson of Albuquerque, and Jim (Terry) Benson of Marathon; her brother, Jack (Phyllis) Krusenstjerna of Odebolt; 10 grandchildren: Byron (Lisa) Webster, Daniel (Fabiola) Webster, Matthew (Rainey) Webster, Kirstin Webster, James Benson, Jr., Jennifer (Dennis) Bussey, Melissa (Tim) Harris, Lucas Benson, Christopher Benson, Kali Benson; 11 great-grandchildren; extended family and many friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents.

Delbert McCoy

Delbert “Del” McCoy, age 75, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, June 7, 2008 in Storm Lake.

Funeral services for Mr. McCoy will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at 10:30 at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Monday, June 9, 2008 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present 6:00 to 8:00.

Delbert Dean McCoy, the son of Orpheus Creighton McCoy and Era Matilda (Lown) McCoy, was born on November 1, 1932 in Terril, Iowa. He spent his youth in the Clarkfield, Minnesota area and graduated from Clarkfield High School in 1950. Del then continued his education at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, from which he graduated in 1954. He began teaching science and coaching football, basketball and track at Alta High School in Alta, Iowa in 1956.

It was while Del was teaching in Alta that he met Carol Joann Radke. Del and Carol were united in marriage on July 23, 1961 at St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover (rural Alta). They were blessed with three children: Valerie, Vanessa and David.

In 1969, Del also was awarded his masters degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Del and Carol subsequently moved their family to Storm Lake, where Del started a new job teaching biology and coaching football, basketball and track at Storm Lake High School. He taught there for the rest of his teaching career, until he retired in 1995.

Del and Carol spent many happy years together raising their family and attending the many school events in which their children participated, as well as those sports events Del coached.

A loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, Del lead a full and happy life. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, where he held various offices over the years, and was a member of the Storm Lake Kiwanis Beavers. He enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture, reading and especially gardening.

Del and Carol would have been married 47 years this coming July 23rd. Anyone who knew Del, knew his family was his first love and priority. He treasured every moment he spent with his children, and later his grandchildren. He also was a dear friend to so many, and will be remembered by countless students and young athletes as a very respected coach and teacher in both the Alta and Storm Lake school systems. Del will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carol, of Storm Lake; daughters Valerie Rosenthal and Vanessa (Jeff) Stewart, both of Alta; and son David (Kimberlynn) McCoy of O’Fallon, Missouri; grandchildren: Jacob (Amy) Stewart, Benjamin Rosenthal, Jackson Rosenthal, Logan McCoy and Preston McCoy; sisters Lucille (Frank) Rose of Spencer, Iowa, Colleen (Roger) Olson of Wood Lake, Minnesota and Judith (Andy) Van Dorpe of Fargo, North Dakota; extended family and a host of friends.

Del was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Erwin and Alice Radke; his brothers, Leland, Kenneth, Dale and Duane; his sister, Ruth Marie Cushman; his nephew, Gary Olson; his nieces, Cindy Olson and Monica Van Dorpe; his sister-in-law, Audrey McCoy; and his brother-in-law, Darrel Cushman.

Donald R. Mentzer

Donald Ralph Mentzer, age 89, of Schaller, Iowa, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2008, at the Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 24th, at the First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt with Rev. Mark Volkers officiating. Burial will be at the Schaller Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller.

Don was born on May 28, 1918, on a farm in Cherokee County, Iowa, to Ralph and Marian (Parker) Mentzer. At the age of nine, the family moved to Sac County to the farm where Ray Mentzer now lives. Don attended a country school near the family farm and Early High School.

On February 6, 1944, Don married Helen Godbersen at the Presbyterian Church in Odebolt, Iowa, where he was a long time member, and served as a Trustee. Four children were born to this union: Donna, Kenneth, Bruce, and Rick.

As a young man, Don started farming with horses, and he was still farming through the 2007 harvest. Don was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed family reunions. Don especially enjoyed Christmas. A real tree and lighting the fireplace provided a warm and loving homecoming for all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. You could often find him at the feedmill having coffee with his friends. He will be missed by many.

His favorite pastime was restoring antique tractors, which led to a large collection. Including the 1935 John Deere A that was purchased by his father, Ralph as a new tractor. These tractors were proudly displayed at many area celebrations.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; his children: Donna and (Gene) Cedar of Meriden, IA; Ken and (Linda) Mentzer of Holstein; Bruce and (Jackie) Mentzer of Schaller; and Rick and (Brenda) Mentzer of Schaller; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Neil Cedar; Kami (Reggie) Morton and their children Kylei and Braelin; Kent (Tami) Mentzer and their son Kale; Kallie (Matt) Voge and their children McKenzie and Addison; Sara (Chad) Steinkamp and their daughter Josie Ann; Mitchell Mentzer; Ayla (Jim) Alesch; Alyssa Ringgenberg; Austin Mentzer; and Hallie Mentzer. Other survivors include his brothers: Howard (Betty) Mentzer of Nemaha and Raymond (Marilyn) of Early; sister-in-law Hallie Mason; many extended family members; and a host of friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; one great-grandson; two brothers: Homer in infancy and Russell Mentzer and wife Lucille; two sisters and their husbands: Lola and Everett Stoneberg and Joyce and Lee Mason; and two nephews.

Edna D. Brummer

Edna D. Brummer, age 97, of Albert City, Iowa, died Friday, May 09, 2008 at Pleasant View Home in Albert City.

Services for Mrs. Brummer will be held Monday, May 12, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with Reverend Stephen Kieser of Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery in rural Newell, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, 2008 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present.

Edna Dorothea Bertha (Hogrefe) Brummer was born on her parent’s farm in Grant Township, Buena Vista County, on August 30, 1910, the daughter of John and Amanda (Hartje) Hogrefe. She was the first of six children.

Edna was baptized September 18, 1910 at Zion Lutheran Church. She attended Zion Parochial School until the age of 13 before dropping out. Edna was confirmed on April 13, 1924. She chose as her confirmation verse, Revelation 3:20.

On January 29, 1937, Edna was united in marriage to Oscar Brummer at St. John’s United Church of Christ, rural Newell, Iowa. It was a double wedding ceremony shared with Oscar’s twin brother, Arvin Brummer and Edna’s sister, Hilda Hogrefe. The couple was blessed with two children: Robert and Ronald.

Edna and Oscar spent their entire married life on a farm in Buna Vista County from 1937 until his death in June 1984. She liked being outdoors helping Oscar with the crops and chores. For many years she tended to a garden and raised a flock of ducks, which she dressed out in the late fall.

Edna enjoyed watching game shows and ball games on television, listening to polka music, playing cards, knitting, crocheting, and sewing. She did a lot of baking, especially bread, cinnamon rolls, coffee cakes and cookies, which she generously shared with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Robert Brummer and wife Dorothy Ann of Albert City; one granddaughter, Kerry and husband Brian Amendt of Spencer, Iowa; two great-grandchildren: Tyler and Erica Amendt; one sister, Mabel Zeman of Storm Lake; two sisters-in-law: Delores Hogrefe of Lowell, Arkansas and Gretel Brummer of Storm Lake; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, John and Amanda Hogrefe; husband, Oscar Brummer; her infant son, Ronald; two sisters: Hilda Brummer and Lilly Sievers; and two brothers: Emil and Elmer Hogrefe.
