Gerhardt C. Niemeier

Gerhardt C. Niemeier, age 85, of Galva, Iowa died Friday, December 31, 2004 at the Ida Grove Hospital.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, January 4, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva with Reverend Paul Egger officiating. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in rural Galva. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be from 4-8:00 pm at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva, where the family will be present from 6-8:00 pm to greet friends.

Gerhardt (Gay) Carl Niemeier was born September 24, 1919, in rural Ida County to Arnold Sr. and Anna (Rusch) Niemeier. He lived with his family in rural Ida County where he attended school. On October 4, 1919, Gerhardt was baptized in St. John Lutheran Church in Galva and in1933 was confirmed.

On April 28, 1942, Gerhardt entered the United States Air Force. He served during WWII in American Panama, earning the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal before his honorable discharge on October 25, 1945.

After returning home, Gerhardt resumed farming. On February 2, 1947, he was united in marriage to Caroline Johanna Godberson at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva. To this union, three children were born: Kenneth, Katherine and Karen.

Gerhardt remained an active member of St. John Lutheran Church throughout his life. He held the positions of: Elder, Trustee, usher, janitor, Financial Secretary and played in the Dartball League.

The love of family and farming were foremost in his life. He also enjoyed playing cards and always had a smile on his face. He was also a member of the Galva American Legion Unit #454.

Left to cherish Gerhardt’s memory are his beloved wife, Caroline; children: Kenneth Lee Niemeier and wife Linda, Katherine Ann Thornton and Karen Jensen and husband Jerry; grandchildren: Gerald and Teresa Brown, Chad and Carol Brown, Gabriel and Mona Brown, Kimberley and Kirk Holst, Scott Niemeier, Kristi and Matt Mentink, Chad and Billi Niemeier, and Heather Jensen; great grandchildren: Troy and Keith Brown, Kristen and Megan Brown, Samantha, Cole and Jessi Brown, Jon and Tyann Epping, Dylan and Emma Holst, Mason and Malachi Mentink; sister, Ruth Boysen and husband Vertis, as well as a host of extended family and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Arnold and Anna Niemeier; brothers, Arnold Niemeier, Jr. and Lester Niemeier, sister, Leona (Niemeier) Matthew and brother, Carl Niemeier; grandson, Kevin Niemeier; and sons-in-law: Don Jeffries and Eldon Thornton.

Harriet Vogler

Harriet Vogler was born August 13, 1922 in Early, Iowa to Osmer and Jessie Vogler. She died at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 12 days on Monday, October 25, 2004 at the Fonda Care Center in Fonda, Iowa

Funeral Services were held Thursday, October 28, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa, with Reverend Jamie Cutler of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church officiating. Deanna Larson served as pianist for the service. Interment was in the Early Union Cemetery at Early, Iowa under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Visitation was held on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Mabel V. Benjamin

Mable V. Benjamin, age 91, of Galva, Iowa died on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at the Loring Care Center in Sac City, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, August 16, 2004 at 10:30 am at the United Methodist Church in Galva. Burial will be in the Laurel Cemetery in Laurel, Nebraska. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 pm, Sunday, August 15, 2004 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller where the family will greet friends from 6:00-8:00 pm.

Mable Benjamin was born August 26, 1912 in Hartington, Nebraska where she lived with her parents. She received her education in Hartington, graduating from Hartington High School.

Mable was united in marriage to Clarence Benjamin in her family’s home on March 5, 1937. Mable and Clarence moved to their farm near Galva in 1948, retiring to town in 1976. She was a homemaker, who enjoyed helping with the daily activities on the farm. Mable loved flowers and gardening, and was fond of traveling especially to Texas with Clarence every year with their 5th wheel camper.

Those glad to have shared their lives with Mable are her many nieces and nephews, as well as a host of other extended family members and friends.

Mable was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence on February 9, 1984, five sisters: Bessie, Pearl, Anna and two infant sisters, and one brother Henry.

Omar Reyes

Omar Reyes, age 24, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Friday, September 10, 2004 in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Storm Lake Cemetery.

Friends may call anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Monday, September 13, 2004 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Omar was born on August 7, 1980 to Guillermo and Angelica (Manriguez) Reyes in St. James, Minnesota. He was baptized in St. James, and later moved to Storm Lake, where he belonged to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Omar graduated high school while attending an all boys academy. He was attending Iowa Central Community College, Storm Lake campus, and working at Friesen of Iowa.

Omar wanted to be someone important who would someday change the world with his dreams and inspirations. He had a passion for music and enjoyed writing musical lyrics. He was always there to help those who were close to him. His daughter, Ebony, was everything to him.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Guillermo Reyes and Angelica Manriguez; his daughter, Ebony Reyes; his brothers, Leonel Loza and Fabian Reyes; his sister, Corina Reyes; and many extended family members and many friends.

Raymond “Shorty” Hansen

Raymond “Shorty” Hansen, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, November 6, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, November 10, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Douglas Haynes officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Tuesday, November 9, 2004 from 4—8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where family present from 6—8:00 p.m.

Raymond was born April 4, 1922 at Blair, Nebraska to Chris and Maren (Nielsen) Hansen. He spent his early childhood on his parents’ farm at Blair before moving with them to Storm Lake. He graduated from Storm Lake High School with the Class of 1940.

Shorty was a veteran of World War II and the Battle of the Bulge, having enlisted on March 18, 1943. He served his country with honor until his discharge on November 9, 1945, remaining a patriot his entire life.

On January 19, 1949, Shorty was united in marriage to Mary Anderson at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. Their union was blessed with a son, Greg, and a daughter, Monie. Shorty operated a shoe repair service in Storm Lake until his retirement in 1985.

Shorty was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. He served his community as a member of the Storm Lake Volunteer Fire Department for 13 years. He was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s activities, especially baseball games. Shorty will be remembered as a loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather who treasured the time he spent with his family.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary, of Storm Lake; son Dr. Greg Hansen of Storm Lake; daughter Monie and husband Ron Person of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren: Jeremy and wife Lana Person of Portland, Oregon, Jennifer and husband Michael Powell of Portland, Oregon, Chris Hansen, Beth Hansen and Colleen Hansen of Storm Lake; and other extended family members and a host of friends.

Shorty was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers Tony and George.

Shirley M. Woods

Shirley M. Woods, age 74, of Holstein, Iowa, formerly of Storm Lake died Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at the Holstein Good Samaritan Center in Holstein, Iowa.

Memorial Services will be Friday, December 3, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Rev. Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will be in the Good Shepherd Cemetery in Jackson, Minnesota. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Thursday, December 2, 2004 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., where there will be a Legion of Mary Rosary at 3:30 p.m. and the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Shirley Mae Boies was born May 8, 1930 to Samuel Peter and Grace A. (Smith) Boies. She lived as a child with her parents in Emmetsburg, Iowa.

On June 9, 1949, Shirley was united in marriage to LaMar R. Baker in Long Beach, California. She was a homemaker, who loved her family dearly. She resided in Minnesota, California, and Arizona before she returned to Iowa in September of 2000.

Shirley was a member of the Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Phoenix, Arizona. She enjoyed traveling to historical sites and was a member of the 1000 Trails Travel Club. Her other enjoyments in life were playing cards and other games, sewing, collecting and refinishing antiques.

Left to cherish Shirley, are her daughters: Pamella Jean Iosty and husband Dennis of Storm Lake, Christina Jo Lovaasen and husband Gary of Goodland, Minnesota, and Melinda Jane Barros of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren: Tamra Bennett, Brenda Miller, Clint and Alicia Lovaasen, Brent, Amber, Joel, Sheri and Barry Anderson and Marnie Greggs; great grandchildren: Keely Bennett, Robinson, Samuel and Caroline Miller, Kailie Anderson, Camren Fisher, Davis and Shelby Greggs; one brother, William Boies of Pueblo, Colorado; two sisters: Margaret Kilen and husband Kent of Milford, Iowa and Sandra Nelson of Windom, Minnesota; as well as many extended family and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter Mary Anne in 1952, a son Robert in 1992 and a sister Patricia Swartzbaugh.

Arvilla E. Degner

Arvilla E. Degner, age 98, of Newell, Iowa died Sunday, October 9, 2005 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the United Methodist Church in Newell, with Reverend David Schumann officiating. Burial will be in the Varina Cemetery under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 11, 2005 from 6-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Arvilla E. Gloss was born August 1, 1907 to August W. and Anna (Fippinger) Gloss in Bellwood, Illinois. Her family moved from Illinois to Minnesota, where she received her early education. The family later moved to Iowa and Arvilla completed her education in the Albert City and Newell schools.

On February 22, 1928, Arvilla was united in marriage to Frederick W. Degner at the Congregational Parsonage in Newell. Their union was blessed with five children: Freddie, Barbara, Ruth, Robert and David. Arvilla was a loving wife and devoted mother who treasured her family. She was a homemaker who loved to bake. She was especially known for her good bread and her wonderful apple pies. She also enjoyedembroidery in her free time.

Arvilla was confirmed at St. John’s United Church of Christ in rural Albert City, and was currently a member of the United Methodist Church. She was active in the WSCS in Varina and Newell.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Freddie (Thelma) Degner of Albert City; Barbara (Roger) Waggie of Storm Lake, Iowa; Robert (Barbara) Degner of Fonda, Iowa; David (Ellen) Degner of Newell and a foster child, Eleanor Martin of Long Beach, California. She is further survived by 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; as well as extended family and friends.

Arvilla was preceded in death by her parents; husband Fred, who died in 1972; daughter and son-in-law Ruth and Leonard Paulson; three infant granddaughters: Susan Kay Beilby, Elizabeth Ann Paulson and Heidi Paulson; and one half-brother, Clyde Timke.

Alberta Shevel

Mrs. Alberta Shevel, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 18, 2005 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Memorial Services will be Friday, October 21, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Duane Queen. Inurnment will be in Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

There will be no visitation.

Alberta was born April 3, 1916 at Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of C. J. and Elizabeth (Rusch) Claussen. She was raised in the Schleswig area and received her primary education from the Schleswig school system, graduating from Schleswig High School in 1933. She continued her education at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls (then called Iowa State Teachers’ College) and graduated with a two-year Elementary Education degree. Alberta then taught the fifth and sixth grades at Moorehead, Iowa for two years and then taught fourth grade at Gowrie, Iowa. It was there she met Don Shevel; they married in 1940.

In 1945, Don and Alberta and family moved to the family farm south of Storm Lake. In addition to being a caring mother and making a warm and comfortable home for her family, Alberta served as chairperson of Hayes P.T.C. She was also a faithful member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, where she taught Sunday School, was deacon and elder, served as chairperson of Christian Education and was a member of the ladies circle and Presbyterian Women.

Left to cherish Alberta’s memory are her husband, Don of Storm Lake; daughter Sally and husband Jim Lockwood of Prospect Heights, IL and their daughters, Gwynn Lockwood of Berkeley, CA and Dana Lockwood and husband Mark Sanders of New York, NY; daughter Linda Craig and husband Jim Kimball of Portland, OR; daughter Susan and husband Richard Darby of Litchfield Park, Arizona; son Scott and wife Joanie and their daughter Katy of Storm Lake; a sister Pauline and husband Ben Bielenberg of Westlaco, TX; as well as other family and friends.

Alberta was preceded in death by her parents, C.J. and Elizabeth Claussen, and a brother, Claus.

Amy Swanson

Amy Swanson, age 38, of Springfield, Virginia, formerly of Schaller, Iowa died at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC on Sunday, August 14, 2005.

Funeral Service will be held Saturday, August 20, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Schaller, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4-8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. where family will greet friends from 6-8:00 p.m.

Amy Louise Swanson was born July 1, 1967 in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Jansen) Brenner. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Schaller, Iowa. While living with her family in Schaller, Amy attended and graduated in 1985 from Schaller High School. She furthered her education in child care at Biloxi, Mississippi and Fairfax, Virginia.

On June 26, 1986, Amy was united in marriage to Mike Swanson in Schaller, Iowa at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. They were blessed with two children: Shane and Zoe.

She worked as a teacher’s assistant and preschool teacher in the Fairfax County School District. Her passion involved taking care of children. But most of all, Amy loved her family and friends, and treasured the time she spent with them. She currently was a member of Fort Belvoir Catholic Church in Springfield, Virginia.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Mike Swanson from Springfield, Virginia; her children, Shane and Zoe of Springfield, Virginia; her mother, Mary Brenner of Schaller, Iowa; brothers: Bill Brenner of Schaller, Iowa, Roger Brenner of Schaller, Iowa, Raymond Brenner of Schaller, Iowa, and Ed Brenner of Alta; sisters: Diane Stevenson of Sioux City, Joanne Carlson of Alta, and Kathy Breucklander of Forest City; father- and mother-in-law, Richard and Karen Swanson of Estherville, Iowa; as well as many other relatives, several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Amy was preceded in death by her father, Joe in 1998.
