Irene V. Mandernach

Irene Mandernach, age 88, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Sunday, November 11, 2007 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mandernach will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Reverend Steve Schulz will officiate. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call Lake on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present.

Irene Vernice Mahler was born April 17, 1919 in Aurelia, Iowa, the daughter of Theodore and Sophie (Hasenwinkel) Mahler. She spent her youth in Cherokee County and attended school at Elk Country School. On June 4, 1939, Irene was joined in marriage to Raymond Mandernach at the Methodist Parsonage in Storm Lake. The couple was blessed with six children: Bruce, Eugene, John, Jeannine, Darrel, and one son who died as an infant.

Raymond and Irene farmed north of Storm Lake until they moved to Storm Lake, where they lived together until Raymond’s death on September 14, 1993. Irene was a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, where she was also active in the Ladies Aid. She was a member of the Buena Vista Garden Club and gave time as a volunteer for the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Coffee Shop. Irene enjoyed sewing and liked to quilt. Her family was always her first concern and she treasured the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and greatt-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all those who loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her four sons: Bruce and wife Eileen of Newell, Iowa; Eugene and wife Gladys of Storm Lake; John and wife Millie of Adel, Iowa; Darrel and wife Linda of DeSmet, South Dakota; her daughter, Jeannine Johnson of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Rhonda (Ron) Degner, Rodney (Melisa) Mandernach, Ryan (Sherry) Mandernach, Reece Mandernach, Brenda (Lance) McFadden, Douglas (Linda) Mandernach, Rick (Lisa) Mandernach, Angela Mandernach, Grant (Diana) Mandernach, Eric (Jean) Mandernach, Melissa (James) Temple, Kirk (Jaci) Johnson, Carrie (Josh) Nothdurft, LeAnn (Michael) Bartholow, Jenna Mandernach; great-grandchildren: Rachel, Shayla, Shane, Chelsea, Mackenzie, Aaron, Allison, Megan, Lauren, Jordan, Jaycee, Hunter, Preston, Rebecca, Elli, Nolan, Savannah, Mason, Aibrey, Andrew, Courtney, Collin, Trevor, Ayden, Avery and Ethan; foster great-grandchildren: Tyler, Alexis and Jeremy; her sisters: Florence Buddenhagen of Aurelia, Iowa and Rosalyn Puhrmann of Litchfield, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Delores Mahler of Cherokee, Iowa; brother-in-law, Earl J. Mandernach of Odebolt, Iowa; nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; an infant son; a grandson, Michael; a granddaughter, Julie; brothers and sisters and their spouses: Clara and Calvin “Kelly” Zoffka, Walter and Esther Mahler, Elmer and Waldina Mahler, Florence Mahler (Elmer’s first wife), Leona and Albert Holland, LaVera Mahler, Emmett and Eunice Mahler, and Richard Mahler; brothers- and sisters-in-law: John Buddenhagen, Earl Puhrmann, Dorothy and Russell Anderson, and Bonnie Mandernach.

Orville Ehlers

Orville Ehlers, age 80, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, August 9, 2007 at Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral Service for Mr. Ehlers will be held Monday, August 13, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake, with Pastor Michael Harman officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 12, 2007 from 4-8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6-8:00 p.m.

Orville was born June 4, 1927 in rural Newell, Iowa to Paul and Amanda (Ripke) Ehlers. He was baptized as an infant at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake and confirmed his faith as a youth in 1942 at the same church. He received his education at Zion Lutheran school. A life-long member of Zion Lutheran, Orville loved his Lord and served Him faithfully in the church choir for 50 years.

On April 12, 1953, Orville was united in marriage to Irene Lange at Zion Lutheran Church. The couple was blessed with three children: Connie, Orlan and Ilon. Orville and Irene shared many happy years until her death in 1996. On July 12, 1997, Orville married Alva Carlson and they shared a wonderful companionship these last years.

Orville was a farmer who loved working and living on the land. He was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed fishing in his earlier years. He was fascinated by airplanes and liked to watch them in the sky. He took great pleasure in being able to converse in German with his neighbor. Orville was also a member of the Lions Club in Albert City.

Family was always first in Orville’s life, and he treasured every moment he was able to share with his children, grandchildren, brothers and extended family. He will be dearly missed.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Alva, of Storm Lake; his children: Connie (Melvin) Easter of Somers, Iowa; Orlan Ehlers of Storm Lake; and Ilon (Jon) Negus of Sutherland, Iowa; grandchildren: Jennifer (Jeremy) Blake of Muscatine, Iowa; Jodie Easter and Cellie Easter, both of Somers, Iowa; Heath, Karle and Sean Negus of Sutherland, Iowa; two step-children: Leonard (Janice) Grice and Lane ((Judy) Carlson; brothers: Edgar (Marcella) Ehlers of Storm Lake and Dwayne (Phyllis) Ehlers of Alta, Iowa; sister-in-law, Margie Ehlers of Albert City, Iowa; extended family and many friends.

Orville was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Irene; brother Gordon Ehlers and sister Eldora Zadow.

May God bless the memory of Orville Ehlers.

Charles Zemke

Charles Fredrick “Chuck” Zemke, age 95, of Newell, Iowa, died Friday, June 13, 2008 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral Services for Mr. Zemke are scheduled for Tuesday June 17, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Monday, June 16, 2008 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. for visitation at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00. There will be a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m.

Charles Fredrick Zemke, son of Frederick William and Martha (Porath) Zemke, was born on August 19, 1912 in Clark County near Osceola, Iowa. His family moved to Mullen Nebraska where he was baptized on September 4, 1913 at the Methodist Church. He attended school in Mullen until 1925 when they moved to Newell, Iowa. Here he attended Varina School until eighth grade.

Charles was confirmed at the Salem German Methodist Church west of Varina in 1928 by Reverend Emil Witter. He had been a life long member of the Methodist Churches in both Varina and Newell, where he held several offices.

On March 3, 1940 Charles was united in marriage to Ruth Anna Briggeman of Waco, Nebraska at the Varina Methodist Church. Two daughters were born to this union, Phyllis Ann and Sandra Naydene.

Chuck, as he was known, was a lifetime farmer in the Newell community, retiring from farming in 1975. He was a 4-H leader for the Newell Boosters 4-H Club for ten years. He enjoyed his fishing trips, especially the ones to Canada where he caught the “big ones.” He also enjoyed his flowers and gardening and growing “bigger and better” vegetables which he shared with others.

Chuck was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Newell, Scottish Rite, and Abu Bekr Shrine of Sioux City, Iowa. He enjoyed traveling with Ruth and friends, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was extremely grateful to celebrate over 52 years of marriage. His family was always of great pride and a joy in his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth Anna Zemke in 1992, twin brothers Lester and Leslie, and sisters, Charlotte Witter and Bernice Smith.

Survivors include children: Phyllis and husband Eldon Kolbe of Sac City, Iowa and Sandra and her husband Eldon Dilworth of Adair, Illinois; grandchildren: David Kolbe, Sara Kolbe and great-granddaughter Natasha, all of Des Moines, Iowa; Cassandra Ballou, Jason Ballou and wife Erin Ballou and great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Mackenzie, Grace and Bryce of Newell Iowa; also several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

H. Dwayne Stille

Dwayne Stille, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa passed away Friday, May 2, 2008 at Sunset Knoll Care and Rehab Center.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at St. John’s United Church of Christ in rural Newell, Iowa. Burial is at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2008 in Immanuel E&R Cemetery in rural Schaller, Iowa under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Visitation will be held 5-8:00 p.m., Monday, May 5, 2008 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Dwayne Stille was born on January 14, 1926 in Sac City, Iowa to Herman and Loretta (Burkhardt) Stille. As an infant he was baptized in the Immanuel Reformed Church in rural Schaller. Growing up, Dwayne attended school at Hayes and graduated high school in 1944. He then continued his education at Buena Vista College and graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree and “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities” honors.

On June 11, 1950 he was united in marriage to Joyce Elayne Hillman at the First Christian Church in Oelwein, Iowa. They were blessed with two children: Barbara Sue and Elizabeth Deanne.

Over the years Dwayne had been very involved in many organizations. He served on his church board as president and treasurer. He was also on the Cemetery Board and taught Sunday school for twelve years. Dwayne was a Washington Township Trustee from 1966 to present, a member of the IOOF Lodge #221for sixty-five years serving as Past Noble Grand, Truesdale Farmers’ Club, an Advisory Board member for Iowa Central Community College and was on the Buena Vista County Care Review Committee. As well as being involved in a number activities and organizations, Dwayne enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and teaching them many things including how to play bridge.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joyce; children: Barbara Ault and Elizabeth Yahr; grandchildren: Richard (Rachel) Yahr, Christopher, Laura and Gregory Yahr, all of Waukesha, Wisconsin and Anthony Ault of Omaha, Nebraska; brothers: H. Dean (Marilyn) Stille of Wells, Minnesota; sisters-in-law: Levelle (Bob) Reichers, Rebecca Bayness, Florine Hillman and Judi Stille; brothers-in-law: Gary (Nancy) Hillman and Don (Bonnie) Schoentag, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Dwayne was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Loretta (Burkhardt); brother, Daryl Stille; nephews: Scott and Kevin Stille.

George W. Krohn

George W. Krohn, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services for Mr. Krohn will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be at a later date. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Friday, April 18, 2008 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00.

George was born March 4, 1916, in rural Webb, Iowa, to Knute and Ruby (Warriner) Krohn. He was baptized as an infant in the United Methodist Church in Webb and confirmed his faith as a youth in the same church. He received his education in the Garfield Consolidated School located in Garfield Township just east of Webb. He graduated from Garfield Consolidated High School in 1933.

On November 29, 1941, George was united in marriage to Violet Mae Struve in Pender, Nebraska. The couple was blessed with five children: Jeanette, Ruby, John, James and Kristin. George married Dorothy Weatherly in 1985.

George was a farmer for much of his life, but he also worked as a custodian at Buena Vista College in his later years until he retired in 1990. He was a faithful and active member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, where he served on the Board of Trustees.

As a child, George enjoyed his membership in 4-H, and as an adult, he was a 4-H leader in Peterson, Iowa. At the time he lived in Sioux Rapids, he served his community as the chief of the rural volunteer fire department for five years. George was a fan of almost all sports, and he coached Little League for several years. He attended local sporting events regularly, but was a lifelong, avid backer of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. In 1926, he rode a horse to a location two miles away so he could listen to the Cards play the New York Yankees in the World Series championship game. He was also a fan of BVU sports.

Despite the many hours George spent earning a living and serving his community, his family was always first in his heart. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Dorothy, of Storm Lake; his children: Jeanette Krohn of LeMars, Iowa; Ruby Grunig of Ankeny, Iowa; John (Leah) Krohn of Winterset, Iowa; James (Jeanne) Krohn of Elkhart, Iowa; and Kristin (Terry) Thompson of Clive, Iowa; step-children: Marjorie (Dennis) Strum of New Hampton, Iowa and Tim (Barbara) Weatherly of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; grandchildren: Dan Grunig, Angela (Bill) Stoffel, Christopher (Carrie) Krohn, Jennifer (Steve) Kirby, Nathan (Christine) Krohn, Eric (Michelle) Krohn, and Nick Krohn; step-grandchildren: Todd (Liza) Schug, Cyndi (Wayne) Bahler, Jen (Ken) Miller, Matthew (Krista) Strum; Ann (Mike) Mendez, Dan (Carmen) Strum, Danika Weatherly, Tessa Weatherly, and Sonni (Perry) Cosby; seven great-grandchildren and eleven step great-grandchildren; one sister, Leah Nielsen of Spencer, Iowa; extended family and friends.

George was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Violet; one sister, Marion Joines; step-daughter Barbara Schug and step son-in-law Steven Schug.

Michele A. Harrington

Michele A. Harrington, age 27, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and formerly of Rembrandt, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at her home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa. Burial is in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon, Iowa. There will be no visitation. The Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Michele was born August 12, 1980 in Storm Lake, Iowa to Robert and Sharon (Trenary) Harrington. She attended grade school and graduated from Sioux Central High School in Sioux Rapids, Iowa in 1998. From there, she continued her education at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. On April 12, 2005 she was blessed with a daughter, Emma.

Michele loved spending time outdoors; she enjoyed fishing, camping and mushroom hunting. The fire pit in the backyard was Michele’s and Emma’s special place; they spent as much time there as possible. Michele will be remembered as a fun girl who was full of spunk and had a good heart. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Emma Isis Seifert; her parents, Robert and Sharon Harrington of Rembrandt; her brother, Justin Harrington of Rembrandt; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Michele was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Ed and Kathelyn Harrington; maternal grandparents, Orville and Maxine Trenary; and aunts: Kathy Harrington and Marida (Harrington) Davis Karr.

Myra M. Waples

Myra Myrthel Waples, age 78, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Buena Vista Manor Care Center in Storm Lake.

Graveside services for Ms. Waples will be held Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. at Kennebec Cemetery in rural Castana, Iowa. Reverend Carolyn Hollar of the Quimby United Methodist Church will officiate. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no visitation.

Myrthell was born February 19, 1930 in Castana, Iowa, the daughter of Clair and Millie (Tanner) Waples. She was raised in the Castana area and attended school there. In 1969, Myrthel’s family moved to Storm Lake, where she lived the rest of her life.

Left to cherish her memory are her cousins: Duane Hawthorn of Sioux City, Iowa; Clarice Watson of Eugene, Oregon; extended family and friends.

Myrthel was preceded in death by her parents, Clair and Millie Waples; aunt Hazel Hawthorne; uncle Eldon Waples; and her cousins, Mariam Baker Nye and Virginia Simonsen.

Nelson A. Rivas

Nelson Antonio Rivas, age 46, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, March 20, 2008 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Services for Mr. Rivas will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 25, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where a parish vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m., followed by the recitation of the Rosary.

Nelson Antonio Rivas was born January 10, 1962 in San Salvador, El Salvador, the son of Ramon Campos and Natalia Rivas. He was baptized and confirmed in 1967 in San Salvador.

Nelson was united in marriage to Maria Elena Escalante. They were blessed with two daughters, Nancy and Kelly.

He enjoyed traveling, fixing cars, NASCAR racing and taking road trips. Nelson loved his family and treasured every moment he spent with them. He will be deeply missed.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Maria Elena Rivas of Storm Lake; his children: Nancy Areli Rivas and Kelly Lillibeth Rivas, both of Storm Lake; Karen Rivas and Nelson Rivas, both of California; his parents, Ramon Campos and Natalia Rivas of San Salvador, El Salvador; grandchildren: Frankie Palacio and Alex Rivas, Jr.; brother Sammy Rivas of California; sister Ana Rivas of California; two nieces: Zalene Suyza and Joceln Yvett; three nephews: Alex Rivas, Sergio Marquez and Ricardo Marquez; extended family and many friends.

Nelson was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, his maternal grandparents, and his granddaughter, Destiny Rivas.

Richard J. Kay

Richard J. Kay, age 71, of Storm Lake, Iowa passed away on Friday, May 2, 2008 at Careage Hill Nursing Home in Cherokee, Iowa.

No services are scheduled. Inurnment will be at a later date in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Mason City, Iowa.

Richard J. Kay was born on September 16, 1936 in Mason City, Iowa to James and Stella Kay. He was baptized into the Catholic faith as an infant. He graduated from Mason City High School. Richard enjoyed many activities such as fishing, traveling and flying remote control airplanes.

Left to cherish his memory are his brothers: Jim (Blanche) Kay of Bettendorf, Iowa and Jerry (Ann) Kay of Spanaway, Washington; and sister, Jean (James) Osegaro of Storm Lake, Iowa.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, James and Stella Kay; one sister, Josephine; and one brother, Donald.
