Sau Van Thong

Sau Van Thong, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at his home.

Funeral Services for Mr. Thong will be held Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Inurnment will be in Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Friday, April 18, 2008 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present.

Sau Van Thong was born April 8, 1926 in Bahnsang Meungmu, North Vietnam, the son of Hao Vanh and Ong Thi Thong. He was married to Lun in 1950 in North Vietnam. Together they raised 10 children. Sau served with the French Army during the Vietnam conflict. In October 1975, he moved his family to the United States of America.

Sau was a man who loved life. He enjoyed gardening and he was very good at fixing almost anything that needed it. He took pleasure in a good game of cards. His greatest love, however, was his family, and especially his grandchildren in his later years. His kind and caring ways will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lun Thong of Storm Lake; children: Vieng Thong of Spencer, Iowa; Dawn and husband Vic James of Storm Lake; Neuy and husband Chanh Manivong of Fresno, California; Suzzan and husband Mike Khounlo of Storm Lake; Xuyen and husband Dave Johnson of Aiea, Hawaii; Hup and wife Tran Thong of Jordan, Minnesota; Seng and wife Jody Thong of Clovis, New Mexico; Heui Thong of Hopkins, Minnesota; and John and wife Deb Thong of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren: Christina Thong, Brandon Thong, Nith and husband Steve Young, Nom Baccam, Nancy Baccam, Robert Baccam, Barbie and husband Keo Synarong, Minna and husband Nalinh Sithep, Toni and husband Kevin Minard, Skyler Khounlo, Steven Lovan, Shawn Lovan, Kyle Lovan, Bianca Thong, Trianna Thong, Sabrina Thong, Alan Thong, Bryan Thong, Arianna Thong, Ashtyn Thong, Rayden Broyld, Daniel Tilley, Jacob Weaver and Bayley Weaver; great-grandchildren: Leighton Young, Addie Young, Keegan Alexander, Kianna Alexander and Quinton Alexander; brothers: Sam Thong, Nam Thong and Po Thong; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Sau was preceded in death by a son, Thou Thong; and brothers: Hom Thong, Noi Thong and See Thong.

Wilberta Mae “Billie” Dannenberg

Wilberta Mae “Billie” Dannenberg, age 94, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa.

Memorial services for Mrs. Dannenberg will be held at a later date. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Billie was born November 15, 1913 in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Beatrice (Littell) Caldwell. She spent her youth with her family in Storm Lake, where she attended grade school through high school. She graduated from Storm Lake High School with the Class of 1930.

On November 16, 1931, Billie was united in marriage to Lawrence A. Dannenberg in Beatrice, Nebraska. The couple was blessed with three children: Marilyn, Linda and Jon.

Billie was a loving wife and devoted mother who loved keeping a warm and comfortable home for her family. She also worked side by side with Larry at the Willow Motel in Storm Lake until 1964. A faithful and active member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Billie served as head of the UMW funeral committee for years. She was also a member of Chapter EP of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Her hobbies were playing bridge and knitting.

Billie learned to knit in the 1940s from a neighbor. When she later heard of the Red Cross’ request to contribute knitted scarves, hats and mittens, Billie knitted many scarves which were sent to the soldiers. Billie’s care and concern for others didn’t stop there. For many years, Billie knitted the little pink and blue hats that new babies wore home from the hospital. Between 1987 and 1994, Billie counted that she knitted 2, 263 little hats for babies born at BV Regional Medical Center. Many more caps, lap-size and baby-size afghans were created by Billie over the years and donated to a variety of organizations, including Mr. Goodfellow, Goodwill Industries, Gingerbread House in Storm Lake, and the United Methodist Church, where they were distributed to children and others who most needed them.

Billie’s priority in life was always her family and she treasured every moment she spent with them. Her kind and caring ways will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Marilyn Rehnstrom of Spencer, Iowa and Linda (Vernon) Wade of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren: Anne Rehnstrom of Des Moines, Iowa; Mark (Monica) Rehnstrom of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Jay (Bucky) Rehnstrom of Sioux Rapids; Jonna (Rick) Tornquist of Tucson, Arizona; Shelly (Paul) Carver of Tucson; Jason Dannenberg of Anthon, Iowa; and Todd (Melissa) Dannenberg of Boise, Idaho; 12 great-grandchildren; close family friend, Jan Travis; nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

Billie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence, in 1995; her son, Jon Dannenberg; her grandson, Steven Rehnstrom; son-in-law Don Rehnstrom; and one sister, Frances Hix.

Sub Navongsa

Sub Navongsa, age 46, of Storm Lake died Friday, June 27, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Rites for Sub Navongsa will be Sunday, June 29 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery on Sunday, July 6 at 3:00 p.m.

Sub Navongsa was born October 2, 1956 in Laos, the son of Tauel Navongsa and Sauw Navongsa. He attended school in Laos.

Sub was married to Nhouphona Navongsa in Laos. Four sons were born to this union.

Sub came to Storm Lake in where he worked at Bil Mar Foods. Sub enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was helpful and a friend to others.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Nhouphona; his sons Thavoe, Kaisona, Khonsavanh and Tommy; his brother Souay; and his sister Siang.

Sub was preceded in death by his parents.

Arnold Wunder, Sr.

Arnold Wunder, Sr., age 93, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Tuesday, August 8, 2006 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services for Mr. Wunder are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 11, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery, where Full Military Rites will be accorded by Alta VFW Post 6172. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 10, 2006 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Arnold Herman Wunder was born August 30, 1912 to Herman W. and Alvena (Meves) Wunder on a farm near Shelby, Iowa. He attended country school near Walnut, Iowa before his family moved to the Harlan, Iowa area. A member of the National Honor Society, Arnold graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1930.

On July 18, 1932, Arnold was married to Laura Hazel Oaks in Pipestone, Minnesota. They were blessed with a son, Arnold, Jr. on May 11, 1933. In April of 1943, Arnold joined the United States Navy and served during World War II. Nine months of his duty was discharged on Okinawa. He was honorably discharged during December of 1945. Arnold came back home to his family and his business, Wunder Tires, in Storm Lake, Iowa. He owned and operated the tire business for 37 years before he retired in September 1977.

Arnold was active in his community. He was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, Masons, Oddfellows, Kiwanis Gold Key Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6172 of Alta, as well as a past Grand Counselor of U.C.T. of Iowa. Arnold and Hazel enjoyed 12 years of traveling and they spent their retirement years wintering in Arizona. Arnold was an avid antique collector and he enjoyed card playing.

Survivors include his son, Arnold (Joni) Wunder, Jr. of Storm Lake; brothers Leo Wunder and Victor (Mildred) Wunder; grandchildren Vicki (Allen) Fugate, Lynda (Jeff) Booth, Lisa (Dan) Shull, Laura (James Christenson) Wunder and Holly (Walter) Rentsch; great-grandchildren: Kathryn Wunder, Laura Fugate, Ellie Fugate, Jordyn Booth, Joshua Shull, Taylor Shull, Carly Christenson, Hunter Christenson, Piper Christenson, Adam Rentsch, Sarah Rentsch and Hanna Rentsch; extended family and friends.

Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, Herman W. and Alvena Wunder; his beloved wife, Laura Hazel Wunder; his younger brother, Edmund, who was lost at sea during World War II; younger brother Herman; older brother Albert; and his older sister, Ann Paulson.

Floyd Klinzman

Floyd Klinzman, age 95, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral Service for Mr. Klinzman is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2006 at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Lake View, with Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Burial will be in Wall Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Friday, September 29, 2006 from 5-6:30 pm at the Fireside Room at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake.

Floyd Burton Klinzman was born December 6, 1910 near Cornell, Illinois to Daniel and Mabel Husted Klinzman. He moved with his family to Bagley, Iowa in 1919 where he graduated from high school in 1928.

In 1936, he married Wilma Black. After her death in 1947, he moved with his two small daughters to Lake View where he lived with his sister and brother-in-law, Ethel and Dale Prescott.

Floyd then married Alice Clark Sheffield in 1950. He worked for Harry Parkinson Construction of Lake View and Allied Construction of Atlantic. The family moved to Storm Lake in 1961 where he continued in construction until being employed by the Buena Vista College Maintenance Department in 1966. He retired in 1986.

He was a long-time active member of the Congregation-United Church of Christ in Lake View and is presently a member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Until losing his eyesight, he loved reading, gardening, tatting and watching his favorite teams, the Chicago Cubs and Iowa State Cyclones.

Floyd is survived by his wife, Alice of Storm Lake; Sue (Richard) Faltonson of Nye, Montana; Marc (Linda) Klinzman of Kailu-Kona, Hawaii; LuAnn (Daniel) Teigen of Omaha, Nebraska; Kimble (Holly) Klinzman of Parachute, Colorado; grandchildren, Abby Smith and husband Felipe Cruz of Morelos, Mexico; Darrin Teigen of Ames, Iowa; Rachel (Brody) Linder and children, Alexa, Griffin, and Graffton of Ames; Traci (Randy) Armbrust and children, Addison and Avery of Omaha; Val (David) Godel and children, Aiden and Kyleigh of Denver, Colorado; sister Kathryn (Donald) Schrad of Auburn, Iowa; extended family and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles; and sister, Ethel Wagner.

Audrey E. Henderson

Audrey Henderson, age 96, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, September 24, 2007 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Graveside Services for Mrs. Henderson age will be conducted on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Aurelia, Iowa. There will be no visitation. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Left to cherish Audrey’s memory are her son, Bob and his wife Shirley Henderson of Storm Lake; granddaughter Christy and her husband Rick Ramthun of Rockwell City, Iowa; grandson, Rob and his wife Pat Henderson of Waconia, Minnesota; great-granddaughters Amy Curran and Ann Henderson; great-great-granddaughter Hailey Curran; extended family and friends.

Audrey was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Henderson.

Valborg J. Swenson

Valborg “Vallie” Johanna (Haugen) Swenson, 93, of Storm Lake, Iowa died July 20, 2007 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake IA.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 25, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Pastors Connie Spitzack and Mark Youngquist officiating. Graveside services and burial will be at 3:30 pm, following the church service, at the Soldier Valley Lutheran Cemetery in Soldier, Iowa.

Visitation will be 5-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present to greet friends. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday, one hour prior to the service.

Vallie was born March 11, 1914 in Dunlap, Iowa to Einar and Annette (Foss) Haugen. Vallie graduated from Dunlap High School in 1933 as valedictorian. Vallie married Swen K. Swenson on July 10, 1943 in Soldier, Iowa. The couple lived in Soldier, Moorhead, Storm Lake and Varina. Vallie continued to live at their acreage in Varina following Swen’s passing in January 2000 until February 2004 when she returned to Storm Lake.

Vallie had been a homemaker and manager of the Alley Galley Café at Ressler Drug in Storm Lake. Following her retirement at Ressler Drug she and Swen began a yard, odd jobs and snow removal business retiring again in 1993.

Vallie enjoyed playing cards, working outdoors with her rose bushes, watching all sports, participating in sew and do at church, folding bulletins & newsletter at church and being with her family and friends.

Vallie was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary Unit W. D. Steiner #588 of Varina, and the Peppy Pals and Leisure Ladies Card Clubs of Varina.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Swen; a daughter, Virginia Banks; a granddaughter, Penny Swenson; five brothers, Anton “Tony” Haugen, Jimmy Haugen, Johnny Haugen, Einar Haugen, and Rolland Haugen; and four sisters, Agnes Hicks, Olga Cornelius, Margaret Haugen and Ruth Haugen.

Survivors include two sons, Swen Jr., Urbandale, and Richard and his wife, Lucy, Des Moines; five daughters, Sandy Wagener and her husband Renny, Ankeny; Lenora Libolt and her husband, Bob, Storm Lake; Sallie Leibhart and her husband, Duane, Adel; Ila Chapman and her husband, Richard, York NE; Connie Demers and her husband, John, Storm Lake and a son-in-law, Vernon Banks, Adel; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild; sisters, Helen Swenson of Harlan, Iowa, and Edna Comfort of Whiting, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Leola M. Henrich

Leola M. Henrich, age 90, of Newell, Iowa, passed away on Friday, October 17, 2003, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell. Leola M. Freeman was born on July 23, 1913, in Sac City, the daughter of Roy Dale and Veda Maude (Davis) Freeman. She attended country school and lived on a farm near Sac City until her marriage. On December 10, 1931, Leola was united in marriage to William H. Henrich, Sr., in Sac City.

Leola devoted her life to being a loving wife, mother, and homemaker, helping on the farm and taking care of her children. She enjoyed sports and followed all of Newell's sporting events. She especially enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren's activities. She liked to crochet special gifts for her family.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Newell and a member of the U.M.W. and the Newell Rebekah Lodge.

Surviving Leola are her three sons: Charles Henrich and his wife Mary Lou of West Des Moines, IA, Marvin Henrich and his wife Joan of Indian Lake, FL, William H. Henrich, Jr. and his wife Shirley of Newell; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandsons; several step grandchildren; brother DeVon Freeman and his wife Frances of Sac City, IA; two sisters-in-law: Virginia Freeman of Fonda, IA and Gwen Freeman Gibbons of Sac City, IA; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband William H. Henrich, Sr.; her three brothers: Wayne, Gaylord, and George: and two sisters: Glenadeen Anderson and Ardyth Henrich.

Service for Leola M. Henrich is Wednesday, October 22, 2003, at the United Methodist Church, Newell, Iowa, at 10:30 am, with Rev. Scott G. Holmes officiating. Music will be provided by Brian Cessford, soloist, and Coleen Baughman,organist. Flowers will be taken care of by Linda Stauber, Carol Johnson, and Brenda Schwarz. Pallbearers include: Steven Henrich, Stanley Henrich, Howard Henrich, Seth Henrich, Heath Henrich, Monica Koellen, Lisa Henrich, and LeAnn Millar. Burial will be at the Newell Cemetery. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Homes, Newell, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Tuesday, October 21, 2003, 4-8:00 pm with the family present from 6-8:00 pm, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Elmer Ehlers

Elmer D. Ehlers, age 94, of Storm Lake died on Sunday, June 6, 2004 at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present after 6 p.m. The Rosary will be recited by the Legion of Mary at 3:00 p.m., and a parish vigil service will be held at 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends wishing to send condolences may do so on-line.

Elmer D. Ehlers was born on March 19, 1910 in Egan, South Dakota to William and Anna (Goetsch) Ehlers. He spent his childhood on the family farm near Flandreau, South Dakota, where he attended school.

While working in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Elmer met Catherine B. Grady. They married on June 29, 1936 in Elkton, S.D. They had two children, Richard and Barbara.

In the early 1930 Elmer worked for Maxwell Hardware in Sioux Falls, S.D. During the depression Elmer worked with the WPA in South Dakota. In the late 1930’s Elmer went to work for Montgomery Ward, and in 1941 Wards transferred him to Storm Lake as assistant manager in charge of hardware. Next Elmer worked briefly for Gambles before joining DW Hussey installing furnaces and gutters. Later he worked for Foote Sheet Metal. He started Ehlers Furnace and Gutter Repair in 1975. He was a perfectionist and prided himself on a job well done.

Elmer joined St. Mary’s Catholic Church in 1951 where he was a faithful member.

Elmer enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and cherished the time he spent at these activities with his family. When asked, “How are you?” Elmer replied with a smile and shaking fist, “As mean as ever!” Elmer always had a joke that he often shared with his friends at Malarky’s. Elmer made friends with the neighborhood squirrels and birds; some became tame enough to eat from his hand.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Richard Ehlers and wife, Shirley, of Perry, IA; Barbara Landgraf and husband Jerry of Albuquerque, NM; his six grandchildren: Donna (Landgraf) Jones and husband Jerry, Kirsten Ehlers, Kim Ehlers, Bill Landgraf, Laura Landgraf, and Aaron Landgraf; his two great-grandchildren: Nicklaus and Noah Jones; his sister, Helen Salem of Sioux Falls, SD; and extended family members and friends.

Preceding Elmer in death are his parents; his wife, Catherine; three brothers: Grover, William, and Elvin Ehlers; and one sister, Anita Mitchell.
