Janet W. Garlock

Janet W. Garlock of Schaller passed away Friday, March 28, 2003 at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Schaller, Iowa with the Reverend Ken Fells officiating.

There will be no visitation. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Janet W. Wood was born to Lucien and Gladys (Straight) Wood on January 9, 1916 in Fonda, Iowa. Janet lived with her parents in her younger years in Fonda. She attended Fonda Community School from kindergarten in 1922 through her sophomore year of high school in 1931, then moved to Des Moines and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1933. Following graduation, Janet attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, receiving her degree in Commerce (BA Business) in 1937. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, the University of Iowa Marching Band, and the University of Iowa Seals Swim team.

On January 28, 1939, Janet married Charles William Garlock in Des Moines, Iowa. To this union, two children were born, William and Lucinda.

Janet received her baptism in January of 1916 at the Fonda United Church of Christ where she was an active member from 1957-1996. Janet was the UCC organist for 30 years, a Sunday School teacher, a member of the church board, delegate assembly member, bible school teacher and active in the UCC women’s organization. In 1996, Janet transferred her church membership to the Schaller Presbyterian Church.

Janet was a housewife, who was active with the farm management of the family farms. She also operated Jan’s Style Shop in Fonda from 1966-1975. Upon her retirement in the spring of 1975, Janet found more time to devote to her many hobbies of: reading, gardening, sewing, needlework, crocheting, knitting, painting and quilting. Janet was very involved in many church and community organizations throughout her entire life.

She cherished her family and had special memories involving her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Some of these memories include: U.S. Naval Dependent’s Cruise on USS Valley Forge with her grandson, John Patterson, attending the Marine Corps Graduation of her grandson, Michael Patterson, Mercede’s baptism, and 36 years of trips to her special cabin in Aitkin, Minnesota with her family. Janet traveled with her friends and especially enjoyed a trip to Europe as well as a trip to the National Tole Painter’s Convention in San Francisco. She made many trips to California to be with her sister Marcia and her nieces and nephews. She also visited her sister Kathryn in Guadelahara, Mexico.

Survivors include her children: William Wood Garlock of Lehigh, Iowa and Lucinda Wood Garlock Joens of Schaller, Iowa; brother, Lucien (Bud) S. Wood of Green Valley, Arizona; sisters: Marcia Tweedie of Monarch Beach, California and Kathryn Davison of Laguna Woods, California; grandchildren: Janette Thornton of Kingman, Arizona, William Grieme of Alta, Iowa, Janelle Elizabeth Grieme of Storm Lake, Iowa, John Alexander Patterson of Lake View, Iowa, and Michael Dennis Patterson of Lake View, Iowa; step grandchildren: Bradley (Patricia) Joens of Galva, Iowa and Jennifer (Jim) Holcomb of Sioux City, Iowa; great grandchildren: Mercedes Dreyer of Storm Lake, Iowa and Jamison Point of Kingman, Arizona; step great grandchildren: Colby, Rosemarie and Kenneth Joens of Galva, Iowa, and Jon and Alyssa Holcomb of Sioux City, Iowa; great-great grandson, Destry Point of Kingman, Arizona; nieces: Janet (George) Zaun of Orange, California, Bridget (Robert) Burke of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Molly (Michael) Bearden of Taos, New Mexico, Elizabeth (Kent) Snodgrass of Austin, Texas and Karen (Bill) Eilers of Omaha, Nebraska; nephews: Bruce Bluedom of Hamptons, New York, Bud (Julie) Wood of Webster City, Iowa, Gilbert (Kathy) Wood of Olathe, Kansas, and John (Karen) Tweedie of Upper Arlington, Ohio; as well as many other extended family and friends.

Janet was preceded in death by her father Lucien Wood in 1955, her mother Gladys Wood in 1964, her husband Bill (William) Garlock in 1962, and brother-in-law Jack Tweedie in 2002.

Genevieve “Jane” Candor Walby

Genevieve (Jane) Candor Walby, age 92 of Storm Lake, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at 7:30 p.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Rev. Duane Queen will be officiating. Following the service there will be a time of fellowship held at the church.

Jane was born March 11, 1911, in Cogswell, North Dakota, the youngest of four children born to Robert Arthur and Viola Kendall Candor. She attended Battle Creek (Michigan) High School her junior and senior years, graduating in 1928. She then attended Battle Creek Community College for two years before transferring to Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where she was affiliated with Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She graduated from Iowa State University in 1932 with a degree in dietetics. She did a one-year internship at the University of Minnesota Hospital and then accepted a job in Foley, Minnesota as the county home extension agent.

On April 25, 1936, Jane married Alden M. Walby at her family home in Cogswell. They lived in Oakes, North Dakota, until the spring of 1945 when they moved to Alexandria, Minnesota. In March of 1951, Jane returned to the University of Minnesota to take further dietetics courses. Upon completion, she accepted a job as the first dietitian at Buena Vista County Hospital, until her retirement in 1970.

During her life, Jane was active in Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Tuesday Study Club, SERPACI, Eastern Star, Storm Lake Centennial activities, and the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter JD. She sewed over 1,700 garments for Hillcrest Family Services in Dubuque, Iowa, and Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Inc. She wrote her memoirs in a booklet, “I Remember When,” with proceeds going to fund a journalism scholarship at Buena Vista University.

Jane is survived by two daughters, Ida Mae (Ren) Holland of Little Falls, Minnesota, and Ann (Ray) Steben of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alden of 54 years, one sister, two brothers, and her parents.

A memorial service and celebration of Jane’s life will be held at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Storm Lake, on Tuesday, May 27, at 7:30pm. There will be a private family interment at Old Sargent Cemetery in Cogswell, North Dakota. The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be designated to Lakeside Presbyterian Church or Hillcrest Family Services of Dubuque. Funeral arrangements were made by the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake.

Lena Luft

Lena Ida Elsie Luft, age 100, formerly of Schaller, died March 1, 2003 at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services for Lena Luft, age 100, of Schaller will be Tuesday, March 4th at 2:00 p.m. at the Schaller United Methodist Church with the Reverend Carol Gailey officiating. Burial will be in the Eureka Township Cemetery in Schaller.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller with the family present to greet friends from 6-8 p.m.

Lena Ida Elsie Lenz was born September 23, 1902 in Wall Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Gottlob and Wilhelmina (Rhode) Lenz. She lived with her parents in Holstein and attended the Holstein School.

On December 6, 1929 Lena was united in marriage to Louis Luft. To this union, two sons were born, Verdeen and Calvin.

Lena was a member of the United Methodist Church in Schaller.

She was a homemaker, who loved to bake pies and enjoyed canning.

Survivors include her two sons: Calvin Luft of Schaller, and Verdeen Luft and wife Darlene of Schaller; grandchildren: Dean Luft, Jolene Turnquist, David Luft, Keith Luft, Carol Jones, and Gayelynn Starf; great-grandchildren: Rachel, Brandon, and Wes Turnquist, Angie Luft, and Collin and Benjamin Jones; great-great grandchildren: Tiffany and Mikayla Hanson; honorary grandchildren: Laurene Mills and Paula Bubke; honorary great-grandchildren: Andy Mills, Michael Mills, Heather Gray, Neil Bubke, and Michelle Bubke; and other extended family members and friends.

Lena was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis in 1976; and siblings: Otto, William, Charles, Minnie, Martha, Oscar, Robert, John, Alice, Clarence, Marvin and an infant brother.

Loretta M. Schott

Loretta M. Schott, age 89 of Early passed away at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa on Sunday, March 23, 2003, following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Thursday, March 27, 2003 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early with Reverend Timothy Schott officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Early, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will begin at 5:30 pm, Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early with a vigil service at 7:00 pm.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Early or Briar Cliff University Scholarship Fund.

Loretta M. McKenna was born March 15, 1914, on a farm north of Early, Iowa to John and Alma (Smith) McKenna. The family resided in rural Early. She attended and graduated from Sacred Heart School in Early. Following graduation, Loretta attended Briar Cliff College where she earned her two year teaching degree in 1934. She later went on to attend Buena Vista College to complete her four year degree.

Prior to marriage, Loretta was a teacher in rural schools around Early and in Sulphur Springs.

On June 17, 1938, Loretta was united in marriage to Louis Schott at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early. This union was blessed with five children, John, Ted, Max, Timothy, and Diane. She taught in the Newell Special Education Program and Sac City Work Study Program, retiring in 1978.

Loretta was a life long member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early where she had earlier received her baptism and confirmation. She was devoted to her Catholic faith, to her husband and family, and to the value of learning.

Loretta is survived by her sons: John and Judy (Scharfenkamp) Schott of Raleigh, North Carolina; Max and Molly (Morgan) Schott of Des Moines, Iowa; and Father Timothy Schott of Carroll, Iowa; daughter, Diane and Henry Evans of Chewelah, Washington; brothers: James F. McKenna and Donald McKenna; sister, Margery Parrott; grandchildren: Karen Price, Susan Harrell, Nancy Schott, Michael Schott, Max Schott II, Heidi Carsello, Bridget Hrabe, Maggie Evans, and Benjamin Evans; great-grandchildren: Alyssa Price, Lauren Price, Kristen Price, Courtney Harrell, Adam Harrell, Sophia Schott, Linnea Schott, and Oscar Hrabe; and other extended family and friends.

Preceding Loretta in death are her parents, her husband, Louis H. Schott (December 23, 1988); son, Ted Schott (September 23, 1942); and brothers J. Melvin and Bernard McKenna.

Pearle Kaufman

Pearle Kaufman, age 101, of Storm Lake died Saturday, October 11, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at 1:30 pm at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call on Monday anytime after 3:00 where the family will be present from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. A Rebekah Lodge Memorial Service will be held at 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home to conclude the visitation.

Pearle Margarete Goff was born May 12, 1902 on a farmstead near Newell in Providence Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa. She was one of seven children born to Dora Rosella Parker Goff and Orlando Ficklin Goff.

She was a student at Sulphur Springs school until the eighth grade when she was needed at home to care for her brothers and sisters.

On November 10, 1923, Pearle was married to Harold Francis Kaufman by Reverend Herbert Clegg at the Methodist parsonage in Storm Lake. A son and daughter were born to this union—Jack R. Kaufman and Marjorie E. Kaufman Clough, both of Storm Lake.

Pearle was a faithful member of the United Methodist church in Storm Lake, a lifetime member of the Rebekah Lodge, Royal Neighbor Lodge and Methodist Manor Guild. She held many offices in all her endeavors, along with being Chairman of the Election Board and P.T.A. president.

Pearle wrote and presented the history of the United Methodist church to its members. She will be long remembered for the beautiful tatting, quilting, crocheting and writings, along with the ability to alter clothes for everyone. Each of her grandchildren received a handmade quilt at their graduation. Pearle had a kind and generous spirit, always sharing her cookies, pies and rolls with shut-ins and faithfully visiting the sick.

Pearle leaves to mourn her death her son, Jack and wife Vivian Kaufman, her daughter, Marjorie Kaufman Clough and husband Roy Clough; her grandchildren, Candy Clough and husband John Fitzpatrick, Kelly and wife Connie Clough, and Linda Kaufman Jones and husband Chauncey Jones; six great-grandchildren: Joel and Kate Fitzpatrick, Greta and Amy Jones, Christian Clough and Cole Peterson.

Preceding Pearle in death were her parents, her husband Harold in 1976, a granddaughter, Kerry Jan Clough Peterson, six brothers and sisters: Harold, Dorothy, Ruth, Frances, Dora and Charles.

Richard O. Nelson

Richard O. Nelson, age 45, of San Antonio, Texas formerly of Storm Lake died suddenly on Monday, September 22, 2003 at his San Antonio home.

Private family funeral services will be held on Friday, September 26th in Storm Lake with Reverend Connie Spitzack of St. Mark Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established at St. Mark Lutheran Church. Condolences may be sent to the family via the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home website.

Richard Owen Nelson was born November 18, 1957 in Emmetsburg, Iowa the son of Henry Morris Nelson and Arlene Mary (Vanderby) Nelson. Richard was baptized on December 15, 1957 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ringsted, Iowa and confirmed on May 13, 1973 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.

Richard graduated from Storm Lake High School with the class of 1976. He continued his education at Iowa State University where he graduated in 1981 and then earned a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1983.

At the time of his death he was self-employed as a design engineer.

On January 4, 1996 he was united in marriage to Maria Magdalena Romero in Wichita, Kansas. The couple had made their home in Illinois before moving to San Antonio in April of 2003.

Richard always had fond memories of growing up with his Emerald Park schoolmates, he participated in tennis at Iowa State and loved fishing and playing golf at Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake with his dad and brothers. He will be remembered by his wife and children as a kind, generous and loving husband and father.

She is survived by his wife Maria Magdalena, a daughter Amy Michelle, age 6 and a son Alan Richard, age 4, of San Antonio, his parents of Storm Lake, four brothers, Harlan and his wife, Virginia of Flagstaff, Arizona, Dennis Nelson of Carnsville, Missouri, Steve and his wife, Emma of Seattle, Washington and Eric and his wife, Ann of Pella, Iowa and a sister, Donna Nelson of Carson City, Nevada. Also surviving are three nieces, Paige, Tanna and Angelica Jo Nelson, three nephews, Shaun Kennedy and Sam and Henry Nelson along with an aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Robert E. “Bob” Reis

Robert E. “Bob” Reis, age 71, of Storm Lake died Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake following a lengthy illness.

Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, August 9th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial with full military honors by Amvets Post #66 will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, rural Storm Lake.

Friends may call at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake any time after 3:00 p.m. on Friday where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a Legion of Mary Rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a parish scripture service at 7:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Robert Eugene Reis was born November 26, 1931 in Storm Lake, Iowa the son of Bernard M. and Erna G. (Engle) Reis. He graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic School in Fonda. He served in the military for 11 years, first during the Korean War in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant and later as a member of the Iowa National Guard.

On April 28, 1956, he married Evelyn M. “Evie” Braun at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda. She died on December 13, 1982. On October 17, 1986, Bob married Judith A. “Judy” Wagner Pullen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the couple celebrated their wedding with a public dance, the last one ever held at the Cobblestone in Storm Lake.

Bob worked as an auto mechanic and auto shop service manager and later owned and operated The House of Woods in Storm Lake.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, past commander of Amvets Post #66, served on the board of directors of “The Red Barn” (now Genesis Development) and was a Little League Coach.

Bob retired from the Storm Lake Volunteer Fire Department after 25 years of service, 15 years as the Assistant Chief. He enjoyed camping, wood working and dancing. He will be remembered by his family as a loving and caring husband and father, for his great sense of humor, and for his love of his country.

He is survived by his wife, Judy of Storm Lake, four sons; Mark Reis and his wife, Julie and their children, Jennifer, Matthew and Amy of Altoona, Michael Reis and his wife, Tracy of Des Moines, Curtis Reis and his wife, Connie and their children, Caycee and Christopher of Storm Lake, and Daniel Reis and his fiancée, Judy King of Des Moines, a daughter, Karin Reis of Storm Lake, three step-daughters; Deborah Struthers and her husband, Steve and their daughter Rebecca of Storm Lake, Joanne Brinkman and her husband, Robert and their children, Jacob, Thomas and Samuel of Rolfe and Kathleen (Kathy) Smith and her husband, Peter and their children, Amanda, Tyler, Garrett, Kayla and Emma of Crete, NE. Also surviving is a step-great granddaughter, Leah Burleigh, a brother, Dale Reis and his wife, Bev of Fonda, a sister Marge Cramer of Indianola along with numerous other extended family members and friends.

Southchay Xayarath

Southchay Xayarath, age 30, of Holland, Michigan died Friday, December 19, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake after a brief illness while visiting relatives in the Storm Lake area.

The casket will be blessed at 1:00 p.m and Buddhist rites will be performed 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 21, 2003 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Southchay Xayarath was born on February 3, 1973 in Laos to Banthai Xayarath and Khamtanh Xayarath. After coming to America, Southchay lived in California and graduated from high school there.

Southchay was a kind person who liked people and enjoyed conversation over a good meal. She had a special love for children. Southchay was an avid card player and especially liked the game of Red Card. She loved to go shopping and traveling to other states to visit.

Survivors include her parents; her son, Tony Xayarath; her daughters: Phawnkham Bee Xayarath, and Emily Rathida; brothers Kahamsay Xayarath, Khansavay Xayarath and Phonexay Xayarath; a sister, Khambay Xayarath; and many other extended family members and friends.

Yvonne Meyer

Yvonne Meyer, age 67, of Storm Lake died Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral mass for Mrs. Meyer will be Saturday, September 20, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Bruce Lawler officiating.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Friday, September 19, 2003 after 3:00 p.m., where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a Legion of Mary Service at 3:30 p.m. and a parish scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Yvonne Shannon was born on December 18, 1935 at Storm Lake, Iowa to Ross and Mildred (Sliefert) Shannon. A lifelong member of St. Mary’s Church in Storm Lake, she was baptized, confirmed and married there. She spent her childhood years on a farm near Storm Lake with her parents. She attended country school and graduated from Storm Lake High School with the Class of 1954.

On June 23, 1973, Yvonne married Don Meyer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. She was a loving wife and devoted mother who cherished the time she spent with her family. Yvonne worked for a number of years at the Storm Lake Municipal Golf Course, retiring in 2002.

Yvonne liked to play golf, enjoyed crafting, collected cat memorabilia and was an ardent Iowa Hawkeyes basketball fan.

She was loved by her family and friends and will be missed.

Yvonne is survived by her husband, Don, son J. Kerry Ryan of Las Vegas; daughters Tami Dean of Alta and Tina and husband Mike Roberts of Barnum; grandchildren: Tanner and Walker Roberts and Shannon and Adam Dean; great-grandchild Treyvon Bailey of Alta; and her sisters Opal Peterson of Webster City, LaVern and husband Darrell Mommer of Des Moines, Viola McMahon of Perry and Doris Gustafson of Arnolds Park.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Michael Ryan, and a brother, Ross Shannon.
