Elin Frandsen

Elin Marie (Jacobsen) Frandsen, age 89, of Newell, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Loring Hospital in Sac City, Iowa. Elin was born August 21, 1914, in Tyler, MN, the daughter of Aage and Andrea (Panum) Jacobsen. She was baptized September 27, 1914, in Tyler and graduated from Tyler High School in 1932.

Elin was united in marriage to Marvin H. Frandsen on January 24, 1937, in Tyler, MN. They moved to a farm near Newell, IA, after their marriage. They were the proud parents of three daughters: Sonja, Linda, and Julie. Elin was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. She worked as a cook in the Newell Schools and was a member of the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. She was also a member of the Danish Sisterhood, married Meeters, and Church Ladies Aid.

Elin and her husband Marvin enjoyed many years together, gardening, fishing and spending time with their children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughters: Sonja Irwin to Topeka, KS, Linda Harris of New Orleans, LA, and Julie Duffy and her husband Richard of Boone, IA; her six grandchildren: Kathy Collins, Cindy McVicker, Lisa Kintz, Randy Duffy, Beth Sword, and Katie Harris; 12 great-grandchildren; her brother Henry Jacobsen and his wife Sharon of Tyler, MN; sisters-in-law: Erna Jacobsen and Berta Jacobsen; many nieces and nephews; extended family and friends.

Elin was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Marvin; a sister Mildred Duffy; two brothers: Ewald and Elmer Jacobsen; and two sons-in-law: Bud Irwin and Joe Harris.

Funeral services for Elin is Tuesday, May 4th, 10:30 a.m., at the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, IA, with Rev. Paul Johnston officiating, and Carol Hansen organist. Flower arrangements will be taken care of by Linda and Jerry Stauber. Pallbearers include: Jerry McVicker, Jimmy Collins, Randy Duffy, and Nic McVicker. Interment will be at the Newell Cemetery under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home.

Visitation is 4:00 – 8:00, Monday, May 3rd at the Fratzke Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Elsie Hansen

Elsie M. Hansen, age 90, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Memorial service was held on Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, at the funeral home.

Elsie Marie Hansen, the daughter of Otto and Agnes Anderson Johnson, was born in Des Moines, IA on August 5, 1913.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith.

Her childhood years were spent in Alta and the Highview area where she attended school. On August 23, 1933, she was united in marriage to Einer A. Hansen. To this union a son, Gary was born.

Elsie was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed her children and family.

Several years were spent near Aurelia and Alta where they were engaged in farming. In 1941 they moved to Rembrandt and to Storm Lake in 1954. Following Einer’s death in 1970, Elsie moved to McCord Manor and then to Buena Vista Manor due to failing health.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a sister, Edna Johnson; a brother, Stanley Johnson; and step-father, Herman Franzene.

She is survived by her son, Gary and wife Karen of Denver, CO; three grandchildren, Kim and Eric Martins of South Orange, NJ; Kari Kline of Denver, CO; and Jeff and Becky Hansen of Denver, CO; 4 great-grandchildren, Taylor and Mitchel Martins; Kendall Kline; and Jill Hansen; four sisters, Elayne and Everett Grapenthin of Linn Grove, IA; Vivian and Jack Kaufman of Storm Lake, IA; Vera and Frank Miller of Bella Vista, AR; and JoAnn Heppler of Apple Valley, CA; a sister-in-law, Delores Johnson of Peterson, IA; beloved nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Evelyn M. Nehring

Evelyn M. Nehring, age 85, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on July 21, 2004 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 25, 2004 at 10:30 am at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake where Reverend Douglas Haynes will officiate. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, rural Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 pm at the church where the family will greet friends from 6:00-8:00 pm.

Evelyn Minnie Sievers was born April 6, 1919 to William and Anna (Griffel) Sievers in Grant Township, where she lived with her parents. She attended Zion Lutheran School for eight years. Evelyn was baptized on April 27, 1919 and confirmed April 9, 1933 at Zion Lutheran Church by Reverend F. Albrecht. She was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.

On September 25, 1938, Evelyn was united in marriage to Wendolin H. Nehring at the Evangelical Reformed Church in Grant Township in rural Storm Lake by Reverend Thomas G. Halbur. To this marriage, nine children were born: Richard, Garland, Shirley, Karolyn, Cynthia, Robert, Shari, Gailyn and Mark. Evelyn was an active housewife who loved to farm and raise her sons and daughters. Evelyn loved and dearly cherished all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an avid sports fan, especially of the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

She is survived by her sons: Richard (Rosalie) of Des Moines, Robert (Sara) of Atlantic, Gailyn (Billie) of Storm Lake and Mark (Lori) of Alta; daughters: Shirley (Gary) Williams of Manson, Karolyn (Wayne) Halverson of Storm Lake, Cynthia (Rick) Hatch of Early and Shari McCaulley of Manson; daughter-in-law, Karen Nehring of Newell; sister, Marcella Radke of Storm Lake; sisters-in-law, Doris Sievers, Dorothy Sievers, and Audrey Miller; twenty-six grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wendolin on April 27, 1958; son, Garland in 1977; daughter-in-law, Diane in 1999; son-in-law, John in 1992; brothers: Fred, Willie, Martin and Wayne; sisters: Pauline, Leah, Viola, Eldona and LaVerne.

George Ernst

George Harry Ernst, age 77, of Newell, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, November 10, 2004, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

George was born on February 26, 1927, at White River, South Dakota, the son of Christopher Alfred and Elizabeth (Mauch) Ernst. He grew up in White River where he attended school.

In 1952 George joined the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Private 1st Class, serving during the Korean Conflict.

On April 20, 1960, he was united in marriage to Beverly Blaskowski in Fargo, North Dakota. Their union was blessed with seven children: Karen, Bonnie, Joey, Tammy, Daniel, Christopher, and Amy. The couple moved to Iowa in 1970 from Minnesota. He worked for Lange Dairy until they closed, and in 1973 began working for Nobles till they closed in 1984. He retired in 1999 from grounds keeper at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake.

His interests included woodworking, fishing, doing puzzles, playing cards, collecting eagles, belt buckles, and hats, and playing softball in his younger years. The family has many special memories of fishing trips to Minnesota.

George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who enjoyed spending lots of time with his grandchildren and attending family reunions.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Beverly; children: Karen (Tom) Christensen of Cherokee, Bonnie (Steve) Hopper of Newell, Joey (Ginny) Ernst of Newell, Tammy (Larry) Laird of Pocahontas, Daniel Ernst of Newell, Christopher (Jessica) Ernst of Early, and Amy (Ray) Koster of Menlo, IA; 16 grandchildren; brother Jake (Pat) Ernst of Grantsburg, WS; sisters: Kathreen Walters of Greeley, CO, Marge Ziebell of Pierre, SD, Mary (Art) Bromwich of Cambridge, MN, and Elsie (Don) Mack of Grantsburg, WI; many extended family members, and friends.

George was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Rueban, Lee, Wes, and Ben; and sister Carolyn Nieman.

Funeral services for George will be held Saturday, November 13th, 2:00 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in Newell, Iowa, with Reverend Greg Baskerville officiating. Burial will be at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home.

Visitation for friends and family will be held Friday, November 12th, 5:00-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Iona Hausman

Iona Hausman, age 85, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Saturday, February 7, 2004 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Douglas Haynes officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake, under the direction of Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call anytime after 4:00 on Monday at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friends wishing to send condolences to the family may do so online.

Iona Huseman was born on July 17, 1918 in Hanover, Iowa to Bill and Ida (Oatman) Huseman. She spent her childhood in her parents’ home in rural Alta, Iowa, attending country school through the 8th grade.

On December 28, 1940, Iona was united in marriage to Forrest Henry Hausman in Alta. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Mary.

Iona was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. She was baptized on August 8, 1918 in Hanover and later confirmed on November 8, 1936 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alta. Iona, or “Tiny” as she was known to her family, was a floral designer by trade. She enjoyed gardening, handiwork, baking pies for the B.V. County Fair and was especially fond of spending time with her family. Iona was a great card player. She had time for anyone in need and always put others first.

Iona’s greatest delight was her family. Her three great-granddaughters brought her much joy. She treasured every minute that she spent with them.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Mary Steffen and husband William of Storm Lake; brother, Vernon “Dutch” Huseman and wife Joyce of Fort Dodge; sisters: Lola Radke and husband Orville of Alta and Faye Peterson and husband Ronald also of Alta; grandchildren Pete DePuma and wife Mary Ann of Storm Lake and their three children, Emily, Grace and Ellie; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Huseman of Fort Dodge and Peggy Huseman of Alta; several nieces and nephews and many extended family members and friends.

Preceding Iona in death were her parents, William and Ida Huseman; her husband, Forrest “Dutch” Hausman in August 1989; and her brothers: Merle “Moose” Huseman and Darrel “Dob” Huseman.

Jenice Sanders

Jenice (Willcutt) Sanders, age 73, of Mesa, Arizona passed away November 1, 2004.

A memorial gathering of family and friends was held at Melcker Mission Chapel in Mesa on Friday, November 5, 2004.

Graveside Services will be Saturday, November 13 at 11:00 a.m. in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake, with Reverend Duane Queen officiating. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Jenice was born to Everett and Letha (Saunders) Willcutt on March 14, 1931 in Storm Lake, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Jenice graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1949 and attended the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls, Iowa. Jenice was a born teacher and started her career at Sulphur Springs, Iowa. In 1955, having moved to Fargo North Dakota, she continued teaching for 40 years in the Fargo Public Schools and Sunday School at the Fargo Methodist Church.

On June 3, 1951, Jenice was married to Bud Sanders at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Bud passed away in 1995 and in 2000, Jenice moved from Fargo to Mesa, Arizona.

Her retirement years were filled with travel and adventures with her loving partner, Ron Petersen of Mesa, as well as swimming and socializing with her cousin, Donna Bell and friends and neighbors in Country Club Estates. Jenice will be greatly missed by countless friends whom were sent birthday cards each year—the dates were written in her original birthday book and kept since her youth.

She is survived by daughter Liz, son-in-law Rich, and granddaughters Maggie and Kate of Northbrook, Illinois; daughter Becca, son-in-law Jon and grandson Henry of St. Paul, Minnesota; and her brother, Bob, sister-in-law Ann and their three children of Manchester, Massachusetts.

Jenice was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

In lieu of flowers, Jenice’s family has established a memorial fund in her name.

Lowell Larson

Lowell G. Larson, age 83, of Storm Lake died on Saturday, September 4, 2004 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake of lymphoma.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at 10:30 am at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the B.V. Memorial Park Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Lowell Grant Larson was born December 18, 1920 on a farm southwest of Alta, Iowa to Uno S. Larson and Ellen (Johnson) Larson. He lived with his parents on that same farm until March 1, 1930, when the family moved to Storm Lake, Iowa.

During his school years, Lowell attended Maple Valley #9 Country School, south of Hanover for 2 years, prior to completing his grade school at Storm Lake West School and Storm Lake Junior High School. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1938 as class Salutatorian. The class of 1938 was the largest of that time, having 93 graduates.

On November 10, 1943 Lowell was united in marriage to Jane E. Hatch at the Hatch farm, southeast of Alta, Iowa. To this union, three children were born: Gordon, Deanna and Gary.

Lowell was a member of the United Methodist Church in Alta before transferring his membership to the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. He was an active member who held the following positions: Sunday school teacher, Financial Secretary for Alta United Methodist Church for 17 years, Official Board, Trustee as well as assisting with other committees over the years.

Lowell was called to service during WWII on September 2, 1942. He was sent to U.S. Army finance training in Lincoln, Nebraska. On January 9, 1944, Lowell received orders to go to Camp Howze in Texas for combat/infantry training. He left Fort Meade, Maryland in March on the Queen Mary for South Hampton, England where shortly after he received more combat training in a camp in Germany. On Friday, the 13th, Lowell was transferred back to a finance office in Germany. He worked in finance offices in Germany and France until March 1946, when he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.

Following his return, Lowell worked as an accountant in Storm Lake for Dlugosch Motors (1946-1958 when the garage closed), Noble Manufacturing Co. in Sac City (1958-1959), Thermogas Co. in Storm Lake (1959-1969), and Buena Vista County R.E.C. in Storm Lake (1969-until his retirement in 1985).

Lowell enjoyed golf, sports and attending his children’s activities in school and college. He cherished the time he spent on family vacations, and especially the many bus tours he and Jane took throughout the U.S., including Hawaii. He also had great joy attending the State High School basketball tournaments in Des Moines watching the Tornadoes play, while Gary was a member of the team. Lowell was active in the West School P.T.A., Storm Lake Citizens Advisory Board, Storm Lake Park Board, Little League Coaching Staff, Methodist Manor Care Review Board, American Heart Association and the Storm Lake Lions Club for over 40 years (serving as President for 1 year and Secretary/Treasurer for 39 years).

Those blessed to have shared in Lowell’s life are his wife, Jane E. (Hatch) Larson of Storm Lake; son, Gary L. Larson and his wife Sally of Shoreview, Minnesota; daughter, Deanna K. Larson of Storm Lake; grandson, Matthew T. Larson of Madison, Wisconsin; niece, Mary Ann Zweibahmer of Schaller; great niece, Ann Marie Fiorendino and her husband Gene of Storm Lake; great nephew, Ben McVinua of Storm Lake; great-great nephew, Tanner Fiorendino of Storm Lake; sister-in-law, Doris Patterson of Alta, as well as a host of other extended family members and friends.

Preceding Lowell in death are his infant son, Gordon Larson; parents, Uno and Ellen Larson; brother, Ilo Larson; sister-in-law, Pauline Larson; nephew, Scott E. Larson; and brothers-in-law, Ralph Hatch and Thayer D. Patterson.

Lowell was a loving and devoted husband and father. Throughout his life, he strived to do his best. His faith in God was a source of strength. Even the last days of his life, Lowell considered himself to be a lucky man. He was grateful for his family and friends and for the many other blessings God had bestowed upon him.

Alice Boger

Alice Boger, age 97, of Odebolt, Iowa died Friday, May 13, 2005 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be Monday, May 16, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Arthur, Iowa. Burial will be in the Odebolt Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Sunday, May 15, 2005 from 6-8 p.m., where the family will be present, and again on Monday at the church in Arthur from 11:30 a.m. until service time.

Alice was born March 20, 1907, in Danbury, Iowa, the daughter of Burt Edward and Ida Geneive (Sanders) Nepper. She attended country school and St. Patrick’s Academy at Danbury, graduating from Mapleton High School in 1927. On September 12, 1927 she was united in marriage to Wm. M. Boger in Denison. They spent over 62 years together before Bill’s passing in 1990.

The couple farmed in Ida and Sac Counties. They retired from the farm in 1972 moving to Odebolt. She spent a number of years doing day care after moving to town. She enjoyed traveling to visit her children and grandchildren. Her hobbies were reading, mending clothes and love for plants and flowers. Family and friends were her life and she always looked forward to their visits, cards and phone calls. She seldom forgot a family member’s birthday or anniversary.

She was baptized on September 7, 1997 at the Arthur Evangelical Free Church and became of member of the church on September 14 of the same year. She enjoyed reading her bible, was a member of a bible study group and in later years when she could not attend church she enjoyed listening to the church’s weekly sermon on tape.

Survivors include three sons: William (Joanne) Boger, of Storm Lake, James Boger of Denison, Roger (Cheri) Boger of Windsor, MO; three daughters: Shirley (Wm.) McBride, of Kenosha, WI; Lois Catero of Mesa, AZ and Marjorie (LuVerne) Rydberg of Storm Lake; one son-in-law Robert Johnson of Arthur; two sisters-in-law: Eunice Nepper and LuElla Nepper of Ida Grove; 26 grandchildren: Michael Boger, Christopher Boger, Ronald Boger, Martin ( Jennifer) Catero, Joni (Allan) Walquist, Marguerite Mander Jones, Thomas Boger, Angelique Catero, Nancy (Robert) Kobisk, Natalie (Jay) Roth, Barbara (Robert) Wilhelm, JoEllen (James) Williamson, Vicki Kalsto, Beth (Gary) Williamson, Kathy ( Bruce) Wilson, Gayle (Harold) Craig, Lori (Al) Mc Bride, LaDon (Brenda) Rydberg, David Mc Bride, Kent (Brenda) Rydberg, Bobbie Pruiksma, Anne (Rollin) Nordell, Debbie (Richard) Hall, Paul (Nancy) Rydberg, Andrew Johnson, Joan (Tadd) Chapman; 76 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; a son, Kenneth; two daughters, Joyce Johnson and Carol Boger; three grandchildren, L.J. Rathjen, Patti M. Devine and Bill Catero; six brothers, Edward, Franklin, Joseph, Paul, Robert and Lawrence (Bud); two sisters, Mary and Loretta; two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
