Warren M. Frerichs

Funeral services for Warren Frerichs will be held on Friday, May 27th, 11:00 a.m., at the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa, with Reverend Paul Johnston officiating. Burial will be at the Newell Cemetery under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Visitation will be on Thursday, May 26th, 4:00-8:00 p.m., with family present from 6:00-8:00, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Warren M. Frerichs, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at his home in Newell, Iowa.

Warren was born on April 21, 1921, the son of August and Margaret (Mann) Frerichs, in Wall Lake, Iowa. He graduated from Wall Lake High School in 1938 and served in the U. S. Coast Guard from June of 1941 through June of 1946. He earned the rank of Yeoman 2nd Class.

On August 13, 1943, Warren was united in marriage to Elva Virginia Petersen in Seattle, Washington. Two children were born to this union.

Beginning his career while attending Wall Lake High School, Warren pursued the printing profession, working in Walnut, IA. He moved to Newell with his family in 1948, where he worked on The Newell Mirror staff, which later became the Buena Vista County Journal. He retired from the Journal in 1984.

He was a member of the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, and an active member of the Newell American Legion. Warren had the honor of being the first WWII veteran to serve as the post commander, and was in that role while the Allee Building was built and dedicated. He especially enjoyed traveling to Washington State to spend time with his daughter and son-in-law. His interest in all things nautical remained with him throughout his life.

He will be missed by his daughter, Mary Marler and her husband Dan of Hansville, Washington; his sister Norma Cunningham and her husband Elmer of Morro Bay, CA; sisters-in-law: Betty Christensen of Newell and Verna Witter and husband Joe of Plainfield, IL; and his brother-in-law Virgil Petersen and his wife Donna of Loveland, CO. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

His parents; wife Elva on July 29, 2004; and an infant daughter, Nancy Ann, preceded Warren in death.

Walter F. Lullman

Walter F. Lullman, age 78, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, April 9, 2005 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake, with Reverend Tom Egger officiating. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., where the family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Walter Fred Lullman was born April 10, 1926 to Henry Sr. and Louise (Boettcher) Lullman on the family farm. He lived with his family on the Lullman family farm in Grant Township, Buena Vista County. He was baptized on April 10, 1926, confirmed on March 29, 1942, and remained a life-long member of the Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. Walter attended parochial school at Zion Lutheran School.

During his entire life, Walter farmed in Buena Vista County. He loved the farm as well as listening to the radio and going for rides. It was a great enjoyment of Walter’s to see the area livestock and crops on these rides.

Those left to cherish Walter’s memory include his brother Bill Lullman and wife Tootie of Storm Lake; sisters: Lil Cornell of Storm Lake, and Laura Bumann and husband Marvin of Storm Lake; sister-in-law Maxine Lullman; special friend Ella Wilson of Storm Lake; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Walter was preceded in death by his mother, Louise Lullman in 1973, his father Henry Lullman, Sr. in 1980; three brothers: George Lullman in infancy, Dick Lullman in 1991 and Henry Lullman, Jr. in 1999; and sister-in-law Beulah Lullman.

Agnes Scott

Agnes Scott, age 73, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Monday, November 13, 2006 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass for Mrs. Scott will be said at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Bruce Lawler as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 17, 2006 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00. A Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 3:30 and a 7:00 vigil service will be held, also at the funeral home that same day.

In lieu of flowers a memorials may be designated to the Lake Preservation Association.

Agnes Helen Brander was born August 9, 1933 in Storm Lake, Iowa to Edward Warner Brander and Rose Susan (Minette) Brander. She was baptized into the Catholic faith as an infant and received her education at St. Mary’s School in Storm Lake.

On September 2, 1957, Agnes was united in marriage to Gerald Scott at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple was blessed with four children: Kelly, Julie, Daniel and Karen.

Agnes was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, St. Mary’s Guild, participated and believed in the power of the Prayer Chain. She also cleaned the church.

Agnes enjoyed many pastimes; among them were water skiing, working crossword puzzles, dancing, playing cards and writing poetry. She loved her family and friends and treasured the time she spent with them.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Gerald Scott of Storm Lake; daughter Kelly DenHartog of Port Byron, Illinois; daughter Julie (Don) Erps of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; son Daniel (Teri) Scott of Beresford, South Dakota; daughter Karen Scott (Chris Todden) of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Jennifer Harding, Michael Erps, Derek Harjes, Heather Erps, Nate Harjes, Alex DenHartog, Ben Simonds and Sam Simonds; sisters Lorraine Peterson and Rose Mills, both of Storm Lake and Mary Hartman of Le Mars, Iowa; sister-in-law Esther Brander of Spencer, Iowa; extended family and many friends.

Agnes was preceded in death by her mother, Rose Brander; brothers Ward Brander, Lloyd Brander, Allen Brander and Edward Brander; and her sister, Dorothy Brander.

Beverly Ernst

Beverly Ernst, age 65, of Newell, Iowa died Monday, August 7, 2006 at Newell Good Samaritan Home.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, August 10, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Congregational Church in Newell, with Greg Baskerville officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, where family will be present.

Beverly Jean Blaskowski was born on December 15, 1940 to John and Edna (Walworth) Blaskowski in Bismarck, North Dakota. She was one of thirteen children born to this union.

On April 22, 1960, Beverly was united in marriage to George H. Ernst. They were blessed with seven children: Karen, Bonnie, Joey, Tammy, Daniel, Chris and Amy.

Over the years, Beverly found great joy in raising her family and taking care of their needs. In her later years, she delighted in watching her grandchildren grow and took time to play ball with them. She was a great fan of the Minnesota Twins and often spent time listening to their ballgames. Beverly also enjoyed collecting bells.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter Karen and husband Tom Christensen; daughter Bonnie and husband Steven Hopper and their children David and Joshua; son Joey and wife Ginny Ernst and their children Kayla and her husband John, Mitch, Austin and Ashley; daughter Tammy and husband Larry Laird and their children Nick, Lesli and Kiley; son Daniel Ernst and his children Kerry, Shelby and Spencer; son Chris and his wife Jessica Ernst and their children Shanel, Alexia, Janessa and Zander; daughter Amy and her husband Ray Koster; four brothers: Oscar and wife Char Blaskowski, John and wife Dawn Blaskowski, Jim and wife Jeanette Blaskowski and Robert and wife Donna Blaskowski; eight sisters: Helen and husband Bob Judisch, JoAnne and husband Tim Rehborg, Mary Ann and husband Kenny Hanson, Margaret and husband Dennis Brown, Anna and husband Jerry Boffin, Elizabeth and husband Tony Hahn, Patsy and husband Jim Perry, Rose and husband James Gillespie; as well as extended family and friends.

Preceding Beverly in death by her parents, John and Edna Blaskowski and her husband, George H. Ernst.

Everett Ploeger

Everett Ploeger, age 90, of Schaller, Iowa died Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at Odebolt Nursing and Rehab in Odebolt, Iowa.

Funeral Services for Mr. Ploeger are scheduled for Friday, August 18, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Schaller Presbyterian Church, with Reverend Marvin Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Thursday, August 17, 2006 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Everett E. Ploeger was born June 8, 1916 to Frederick and Amelia (Luelf) Ploeger in rural Schaller. He was baptized into the Christian faith as an infant at Immanuel Reformed Church, rural Schaller and later confirmed as a youth in the same church. He attended country school and Schaller public school and graduated from Hayes Consolidated High School. After graduation, Everett worked as a hired hand for area farmers and as a carpenter.

On January 25, 1940, Everett was united in marriage to Verna Sanderman at Immanuel Reformed Church, rural Schaller. The couple was blessed with three daughters, Janice, Judith and Mary. Everett and Verna farmed in the Schaller area until Everett’s retirement in the fall of 1980. In November 1982 they moved into their home in Schaller.

Everett was a lifelong, faithful member of Immanuel Reformed Church, rural Schaller, where he willingly served his Lord as he was needed. He was a past Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Elder and member of the Cemetery committee. Everett enjoyed playing cards and watching the Chicago Cubs baseball games on television. He and Verna especially enjoyed eating out and playing cards with their rural neighbors and some of Everett’s former high school classmates.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years, Verna, of Schaller; daughter Janice Ploeger of Sheldon, Iowa; daughter Judith (Keith) Beyler of Murphysboro, Illinois; daughter Mary (Ronald) Haight of West Des Moines, Iowa; granddaughter Lisa (Joseph) Aldiano; grandsons Mark Beyler and John Beyler; great-grandsons Noah and Isaiah Aldiano; his brother, Reverend Chester (Grace) Ploeger of Garner, Iowa; sister Evelyn (Wilbur) Currie of Schaller; sister Mildred Demers of Storm Lake, Iowa; sister-in-law Mardella Ploeger of Sioux Center, Iowa; extended family and friends.

Everett was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; his brothers, Ivan Ploeger and Lester Ploeger; his sister, Opal Langner; and brothers-in-law William Demers and Lyle Langner.

Gladys Combes

Gladys Combes, age 93, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Services for Mrs. Combes will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Gladys M. Nagel was born September 26, 1913 in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Will and Martha (Klitzke) Nagel. She grew up in the Rock Rapids area, attending school there before graduating from Rock Rapids High School in 1937. In November of 1937, Gladys was united in marriage to Omer Combes in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They were blessed with one daughter, Shirley.

A loving wife and devoted mother, Gladys’ life was always centered around her family, and she treasured the time she spent with them. In her later years, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-granddaughter were a special source of joy for Gladys. Her home was always open to visitors and friends, with whom she enjoyed visiting. Gladys also enjoyed the time she was able to spend traveling. Her special presence will be dearly missed in the lives of her family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Shirley and husband Bob Henderson of Storm Lake; granddaughter Christy (Rick) Ramthun of Rockwell City, Iowa; grandson Rob (Pat) Henderson of Waconia, Minnesota; great-granddaughters Amy Curran and Ann Henderson; great-great-granddaughter Hailey Curran; many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Omer; her brother, Orville Nagel and her sister, Evelyn Vogel.

Kenneth Burke

Kenneth Burke, age 90, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass for Mr. Burke is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, with Father Matt Hewitt as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery with full military rites performed by AMVETS Post #66. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2006 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 3:30 and Parish Vigil Service will be held at 7:00, both at the funeral home.

Kenneth Cecil Burke was born in Henry, South Dakota on February 27, 1916. He was the youngest of ten children of Patrick Francis Burke and Theresa (McKenna) Burke. He attended a one-room schoolhouse and worked on the family farm. His father died when Ken was eleven years old, leaving the family to manage through the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression.

In 1942, Ken enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was stationed aboard an LST, participating in 10 amphibious landings, including the liberation of New Guinea and the Philippines. He was in Manila Bay when General McArthur made his famous return to the Philippines. After the war ended, Ken earned his B.S. in Agricultural Economics from South Dakota State University. He went to work as a field officer for the Iowa Farm Bureau. While working in the Sibley, Iowa area, he met the young woman who would be his wife for 55 years, June Elinor Whitney. They were married in 1951.

Ken began his employment with Citizen’s First National Bank and moved his family to Storm Lake in 1954. He remained with the bank until his retirement in 1986. He continued to serve on the bank’s Board of Directors for many years following his retirement. While working for the bank, Ken attended the Harvard School of Banking and the University of Wisconsin School of Banking.

During the years Ken lived in Storm Lake, he served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, and President and Director of the Community Chest. He also was a lifelong member of the Kiwanis Club. As a charter member of the Lake Preservation Association, Ken played an integral role in the first dredging of Storm Lake in 1958. His Catholic faith was an important part of his life, and he was an avid supporter of St. Mary’s parish and school. He served as Lay Director for St. Mary’s parish for a number of years and was a continuous presence in church volunteer efforts.

Ken was often heard proudly stating that “his only jewels were his children” and “eight kids and not a horse-thief in the bunch.” He is survived by his wife, June of Storm Lake; his eight children: Pat (Carol) Burke of Morris, Minnesota; Tim (Mary) Burke of Storm Lake; Jane (Dave) Smith of Hagerstown, Maryland; Anne (Mark) Hoffard of Storm Lake; Joe Burke of Dallas, Texas; Julia (Pat) Mooney of Storm Lake; Susan Burke of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin; and David (Cathy) Burke of St. Paul, Minnesota; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; extended family and many friends.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, nine siblings and a granddaughter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Ken’s honor may be directed to St. Mary’s Foundation in Storm Lake or the Lake Preservation Association.

Kevin Iehl

Kevin Iehl, age 50, of Rembrandt, Iowa died Thursday, July 27, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 31, 2006 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Rembrandt. Burial will be in the Little Sioux Valley Cemetery in Rembrandt. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Kevin’s family will be present from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 30, 2006 to receive friends at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Kevin was born December 8, 1955 to Everett and Barbara (Irwin) Iehl in Storm Lake. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Kevin graduated from Albert City -Truesdale High School with the Class of 1975. He continued his education at Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg, Iowa for another year.

On August 20, 1977, Kevin was united in marriage to Jeanne Hale at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Rembrandt. They were blessed with a daughter, Jill, and two sons, Brian and Casey.

Kevin was very involved in the community in which he lived and raised his family. He served as a former mayor and council member of the city of Rembrandt, was a volunteer member of the Rembrandt Fire Department for 13 years, and was a member of the Moose Lodge in Storm Lake. He enjoyed the outdoors and sports, especially bowling, golf, boating, camping. He was an avid NASCAR fan and liked to hunt. He was a member of the Ridge Runners Hunting Club. Kevin was employed by Storm Lake Hydraulics as their parts person.

Kevin’s family was always his first priority, however. A loving husband and devoted father, Kevin treasured every moment he spent with Jeanne and his kids. His caring presence will be dearly missed by his family and friends every day.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jeanne, of Rembrandt; daughter Jill (Justin) Henningsen of Ruthven, Iowa; sons Brian Iehl (Shayla Degner) of Rembrandt; and Casey Iehl (Stephanie Thompson) of Rembrandt; father Everett (Jo) Iehl of Fremont, Nebraska; sister Kathryn (Paul) Sefcik of Ottosen, Iowa; father and mother-in-law Raymond and Wilma Hale of Rembrandt; sister-in-law Teresa (Junior) Lammers of Rembrandt; brother-in-law Michael (Elaine) Hale of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; sister-in-law Lisa (Everett) Huffer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sister-in-law Kim (Eddie) Farris of Rembrandt; sister-in-law Angie Hale (Charlie Grienke) of Linn Grove, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended family and a host of friends.

Kevin was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Iehl, on March 13, 2006.
