Lloyd McKibban

Lloyd McKibban, age 77, of Early, Iowa died on Friday, December 15, 2006, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be Monday at 2:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake with Pastor Jim Steen officiating. Burial will follow at the Storm Lake Cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 2:00 pm Sunday at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home where the family will greet friends from 4-6 pm.

Lloyd Everett McKibban was born November 28, 1929 in Maxberg, Iowa to Everett William and Golda (Douglas) McKibban. After his father’s death, his mother was remarried to his stepfather Don Raner.

On August 25, 1963, Lloyd was united in marriage to Deloris Jenkins in Winnebago, Minnesota. Their union was blessed with four children: Margarett, Betty, Lloyd Jr., and Will.

Throughout Lloyd’s life he worked as a farm hand doing anything and everything required to keep the farm in order. He retired in 1997, however always kept his love of farming alive by driving throughout the countryside watching the crops progress. Lloyd also enjoyed tinkering in the yard and especially loved visiting with his friends and family. Above all, Lloyd loved his family and was a devoted husband and wonderful father and grandfather.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 43 years Deloris McKibban of Early; two daughters Margarett (Kendall) Zobel of Galva, IA; Betty Walters of Mason City, IA; three sons Lloyd Jr. (Michelle) McKibban of Sioux Falls, SD; Will (fiancé Michelle) McKibban of Fort Dodge, IA; Jim Simonds of St. Louis, MO; eleven grandchildren Jared, Christie, Michael, Abigail, Sarah, Mitchell, Alyssa, Erica, Alec, Jacob, and Sidney; one great-grandchild Sophie; three brothers Dale (Theressa) McKibban of Livermore, IA; Paul (Katie) McKibban of Livermore, IA; and Richard McKibban of Little Rock, AR; one uncle Delbert Douglas.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Brittney, and two sisters.

LaVada Petersen

LaVada Petersen, age 89, of Newell, Iowa died very peacefully on the afternoon of October 11, 2006 at Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services for Mrs. Petersen are scheduled for Monday, October 16, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, with burial to follow in the Newell Cemetery. Pastor Greg Baskerville will officiate at the service. Friends may call for visitation from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Laura LaVada Miller was born January 16, 1917 in Purdy, Iowa in Lucas County to Edward Elmer Miller and Edna Rosetta (Clement) Miller. She was baptized in the First Christian Church in Belinda, Iowa at the age of 12 years. She received her first eight years of her education in country schools in English township, also in Lucas County. She moved to Chariton, Iowa to finish her high school education, graduation in 1934. Following her college education in Des Moines, Iowa and at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, she then taught school in several country schools for three years.

LaVada moved with her parents to a farm in Buena Vista County, Iowa in 1938, where she met her neighbor “across the fence.” On August 13, 1939, she was married to that neighbor, Eugene Aroe Petersen, in a beautiful ceremony in the Sulphur Springs Church in Sulphur Springs, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Leah Rosetta, Jon Ralph and Donald Eugene.

The Petersens spent most of their lives farming in the Newell, Iowa area until 1974, when they decided to retire to Phoenix, Arizona. Finding retirement boring, the couple began renovating homes for resale and managing apartment complexes until they decided to “really” retire. LaVada worked for several years as a nurse’s aide at Methodist Manor and Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake. She was an active member of the Buena Vista County Rebekah Lodge #258 her entire life, and served as the Iowa Rebekah Assembly state president from 1965—1966. She was a member of the Ladies Encampment Auxiliary #86 of Storm Lake and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Patriarch Millatant of Storm Lake. In Phoenix, she joined the Charity Rebekah Lodge #6 and was very active there, as well. Other activities LaVada enjoyed included singing with the Buena Vista Choral group and her membership in the Rural Study Club of Providence Township in Buena Vista County. LaVada enjoyed baking wedding cakes and making wedding dresses for several brides in the area. She loved her crafts and music a great deal. She also enjoyed spending time doing church work in both Nain Lutheran Church in Newell and Camelback Christian Church in Phoenix.

For the past few years, LaVada has lived back in Newell in an apartment, wanting to enjoy her time with her family. LaVada spent a great deal of time with her family, traveling between Phoenix, Newell and Arkansas on a regular basis. She had been in failing health for some time and finally entered Newell Good Samaritan Home in Newell in the fall of 2005, where she resided until the time of her death.

LaVada was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Edna Miller; her husband, Eugene Petersen; sister Lucile Anderson of Chariton, Iowa; sister Cleta Thomas and husband, Richard, of Lakeside, Iowa; sister Madalyn Clothier and husband, Walter, of Applington, Iowa; brother Clement Miller and wife, Jess, of Fairmont, Minnesota; parents-in-law Andrew and Ivo Petersen; and brother-in-law Ralph Petersen of Newell.

She is survived by her daughter, Leah Franzmeier, of Newell; son Jon and wife Joy Petersen of Lead Hill, Arkansas; son Donald and wife Joan Petersen of Phoenix, Arizona; brother Calvin “Bud” and wife Shirley Miller of Dayton, Iowa; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and their spouses; other relatives and a host of friends.

Sharon Fassler

Sharon Fassler, age 67, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Monday, July 31, 2006 at the Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 4, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Aurelia’s Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call on Thursday, August 3, 2006 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00.

Sharon Ann Richter was born January 22, 1939 in Storm Lake to Clarence and Charlotte (Tyson) Richter. She was baptized into the Christian faith on April 2, 1939 at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church and has been a life-long, faithful member of that congregation. Sharon received her education in the Truesdale school, graduating from Truesdale High School with the Class of 1957.

On January 30, 1970, Sharon and Melvin Fassler were married in the Witter Chapel of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Lisa, and a son, Scott.

Sharon was a natural caretaker and she loved caring for her family, baking and cooking and keeping a warm and comfortable home for them. Friends were always welcome in the Fassler home—Sharon was an outgoing person and enjoyed visiting with people from all walks of life. She loved children and enjoyed attending dances. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Sharon’s caring presence will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her father, Clarence Richter of Storm Lake; daughter Lisa Fassler of Flagstaff, Arizona; son Scott Fassler of Linn Grove, Iowa; stepchildren: Duane (Karin) Fassler of Hosbach, Germany; Debbie (Mike) Borgstrom of Smyrna, Tennessee; Del (Denita) Fassler of Peterson, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister Linda (David) Fassler of Storm Lake; brother Steve (Patti) Richter of Granger, Iowa; brother Jim Richter of Newell, Iowa; brothers Jon Richter and Tom (Caroline) Richter, both of Storm Lake; several nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding Sharon in death were her mother, Charlotte Richter; and her husband, Melvin Fassler.

Virginia M. Hussey

Virginia M. Hussey, age 81, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Thursday, November 2, 2006 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hussey will be held on Monday, November 6, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Virginia Maxine Burkhart was born February 12, 1925 in Spencer, Iowa, the daughter of A. C. and Jennie (Crane) Burkhart. She grew up in her parents home and graduated from Wilson High School in Cherokee, Iowa. On September 19, 1942, Virginia was united in marriage to Donald Hussey in South Sioux City, Nebraska. The couple was blessed with two children: Richard and Patricia.

Virginia was a busy mother and business owner, first raising her family and then working at her Mode-O-Day women’s shop in Storm Lake. She also was a partner with her husband in their trucking firm. A member of the Methodist Church, Virginia also found her membership in the Order of Eastern Star very meaningful. She and Don loved to go camping and enjoyed traveling. They were founding members of the Stormy Water Rollers Good Sam Camping Club. When they weren’t taking the grandkids camping, they were following their activities. And wherever there was a good game of Bingo, you’d find Virginia. But most dear to her heart was her family. She treasured every moment she spent in the company of her loved ones.

Left to cherish Virginia’s memory are her husband of 64 years, Donald of Storm Lake; her daughter, Pat (Dennis) Fisher of Lakeside, Iowa; her daughter-in-law, Donna Hussey of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Kris (Matt) Pearson of Storm Lake; Kim Hussey of Storm Lake; Steve (Amber) Hussey of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Brian Fisher of Grimes, Iowa; Matt (Amanda) Fisher of Newell, Iowa and Mel Fisher of Storm Lake; great-grandchild, Kile Hussey of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; extended family and friends.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Dick Hussey; her grandson, Gregory Ryan Fisher; her brothers Carvel and Clayton (Mick); and her infant sister, Hazel.

Clyde F. Carrington

Clyde F. Carrington, age 87, of Clear Lake, Iowa and longtime businessman from Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, October 27, 2007 at Mercy North Iowa Hospital in Mason City, Iowa.

Services for Mr. Carrington will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery with Full Military rites performed by Alta VFW Post #6172. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m., both during visitation hours at the funeral home.

Clyde Francis Carrington was born October 10, 1920 in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Ira and Florence (Coakley) Carrington. He was baptized in the Catholic faith as an infant at St. Mary’s Church in Storm Lake and confirmed his faith as a youth at the same church. Clyde attended grade school at St. Mary’s School in Storm Lake and graduated from St. Mary’s High School with the Class of 1938. He was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Church in Storm Lake and was also affiliated with St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake.

Clyde was honored to serve his country in the United States Marine Corp during World War II. He received a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and a Silver Star and was stationed in Iceland, Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Saipan, Tinian before he was honorably discharged.

On August 22, 1945, Clyde was united in holy matrimony with Bernice L. Rausch in Storm Lake. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Cathy and Connie. Clyde and Bernice raised their family in Storm Lake, where Clyde was an electrical contractor for many years prior to his retirement in October of 1975.

Clyde was a member of the Storm Lake Fire Department and served as a former Assistant Chief of the department. He loved history and liked to watch westerns. Clyde was a member of different bowling leagues over the years and enjoyed playing golf and going fishing. Above all, he was a loving husband and devoted father. In his later years, Clyde held a special spot in his heart for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He treasured the time he was able to spend with his entire family. His caring presence will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Cathy (Keith) Haugen and Connie (Bob) Bird, both of Clear Lake, Iowa; grandchildren: Travis (Theresa) Glidden, Matt Glidden, Mark (Lisa) Glidden, Jackie (Matt) Firsching and Kelly (Jay) Kuns; great-grandchildren: Cody, Autumn, Tristin and Ty Glidden; Cassie and Callie Glidden; Alec, Shae and Rhys Glidden; Dylan Firsching; Kirstin Buol-Kuns and Madison Kuns; and Baby Boy Kuns due in February of next year; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Clyde was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Bernice in 1994; brothers: Bob Carrington, Bill Carrington, Gene Carrington and their spouses; sisters: Dolores Way, Phyllis Wall, Bunny Kaufman and their spouses; special nephews Mike Carrington
and Tom Carrington; and brother-in-law Wesley (Wilmet) Rausch.

Cynthia (Ploeger) Wolf

Cynthia (Ploeger) Wolf, age 49, of Everett, Washington and formerly of Schaller, Iowa, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, November 4, 2007 at her home, surrounded by her family.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Wolf will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 9, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church in Schaller. Reverend Adam Cox of Schaller and Reverend Kevin Freese of the Battle Creek Presbyterian Church will serve as officiants. Burial will be in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery in rural Schaller. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Thursday, November 8, 2007 between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Snohomish Community Church in Snohomish, Washington.

Cynthia Rose Ploeger was born October 20, 1958 in Fort Hood, Texas, the daughter of Melvin and Dorothy (Stille) Ploeger. She lived her youth in Schaller and graduated from Schaller High School.

On December 5, 1981, Cyndi was united in marriage to Randy Wolf at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in rural Schaller. The couple was blessed with three children: Jennifer, Adam and Matthew.

Cyndi loved her work as a commercial loan officer and assistant vice-president at Frontier Bank, and the many people that she was associated with at the bank. She was an avid scrap booker and maker of greeting cards. She would spend hours in her craft room. She also enjoyed ceramics and earned awards in that field. Cyndi was most happy when she was involved with family activities, including annual trips to Lake Chelan and floating the Columbia River. She also enjoyed boating in the San Juan Islands. She was a devout Christian, Baptist church youth leader, and later a member of the Snohomish Community Church. Cyndi also enjoyed being a member of the Everett Rotary Club. Cyndi will always be remembered for her quick wit and beautiful smile. She was loved by all who met her and will be greatly missed.

She leaves behind her husband, Randy, the love of her life for 26 years; their three children: Jennifer and husband Christopher of Marysville, Washington; Adam and wife Jessica of Renton, Washington; and Matthew and wife Linnea of Massillon, Ohio. She is also survived by her parents, Melvin and Dorothy Ploeger of Ida Grove, Iowa and her father- and mother-in-law, Glen and Bonita Wolf of Storm Lake, Iowa; her two sisters, Diana (Scott) Myrtue of Schaller and Jean (Mark) Burns of Ida Grove, Iowa; her brother, Edward (Joleen) Ploeger of Eureka, Missouri; her two best friends, Cindy Fairchild of Edmond, Oklahoma and Carolee Franzkowiak of Schaller; her grandchild, Matthew, Jr.; Matthew and Linnea’s foster children, Abigail and Sarah; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as a host of friends.

Preceding Cyndi in death are her maternal grandparents, William and Lillie Stille; her paternal grandparents, Edward and Nley Ploeger; uncles Kenneth Stille, Donald Stille and Robert Ploeger; and aunts Donna Jean Stille, Pat Stille and Virginia Burhop.

Elda Plog

Elda Plog, age 102, of Storm Lake, Iowa and formerly of the Alta and Hanover areas, died on Friday, July 13, 2007 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at the Hanover St. John Lutheran Church in rural Alta, Iowa. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the start of the service on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover.

Elda Henriette Wilhelmine Bumann was born on September 1, 1904 to Fred and Wilhemine (Oldenburg) Bumann at her parents’ home in northeast Ida County. She was baptized on October 9, 1904 by Pastor H. A. Maas, the Lutheran pastor of Galva.

Elda’s parents and six brothers moved to the Hanover area when she was in her infancy. Elda attended the St. John Lutheran School and on the 8th of March 1918, Elda was confirmed in her faith.

Elda assumed house-hold responsibilities, caring for her father and brothers, as her mother became gravely ill. Her mother passed away when Elda was sixteen.

On the 18th day of July 1929, Walter Plog and Elda Bumann were united in marriage. The Lord blessed them with 58 years together.

Walter and Elda ran the Hanover store for 26 years, retiring in the fall of 1963.

In their retirement, Walter and Elda continued to live on the acreage at Hanover. Walter entered Sunset Knoll and on July 24, 1987, he was called from this life to his heavenly home.

Elda moved to Alta in October 1987 and resided there until June 1991. She entered Methodist Manor (residential side) and later the Health Care wing. She was always very out-going, pleasant to be around and would joke with nurses and staff.

Elda opened her heart and home to her father and he lived with the Plogs until his death. An uncle, Ernest Oldenberg, lived with them during the winter months for many years and helped at the store.

Elda planted a huge garden each year and then canned the bounty she harvested. She was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover.

Those who cherish her memory include nieces Donna Bumann, Bernice Grau, Donna Jesse, Arlene Ivers, Phyllis Southwick and one nephew, Arlin Bumann.

Elda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; her six brothers: William, Ernest, Edward, Herman and twins, George and Julius Bumann and their respective spouses. Three Bumann nephews also preceded Elda in death: Orren, Eugene and Donald Bumann.

John J. McGowan

John J. McGowan, age 96, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, December 10, 2007 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services for Mr. McGowan will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 13, 2007 St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Bruce Lawler celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Prior to the service, a visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. that morning at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Fonda, Iowa.

John Joseph McGowan was born September 9, 1911 at Joliet, Illinois, the son of Luke and Catherine (Prendergast) McGowan. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda. He attended country school in rural Newell before graduating from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Fonda in 1929. Following his high school graduation, John began farming in the Newell area until he moved to Storm Lake in 1974. He then began working as a maintenance man at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.

On September 22, 1973, John was united in marriage to Dorothy Delmore at Marian Home in Fort Dodge, Iowa. They were happily married until Dorothy’s death in 2005. John was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake since 1974, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing cards with friends. A devoted son and brother, John was a good neighbor and friend to all who knew him. He will be remembered as a kind and helpful person, one who always took time to listen.

Left to cherish his memory are his sister, Helen Riley of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Luke and Catherine McGowan; two brothers, Vincent and Leo; and an infant sister, Cathleen.
