Donald W. Elk

Donald Wayne Elk, 83, a long-time resident of Storm Lake, who currently resided at Otsego Place Assisted Living Center, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, of pulmonary fibrosis at Methodist Manor.

In accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 12, at 10:30 am in the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jamie Cutler officiating and burial to follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery, under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Don was born Oct. 4, 1924, in Galva, the son of Clarence Cleveland and Mildred Whealen Elk. His family moved to Storm Lake in 1933 and he was a 1942 graduate of Storm Lake High School, lettering in football, basketball and track. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and was in flight school when the war ended. Following his discharge in 1945, he enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserve from which he retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He attended Iowa State College in Ames lettering in track. He received the Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1948.

He was united in marriage with Elizabeth Anne Watt on Dec. 19, 1947, in Grinnell. They resided in Marshalltown from 1948 until 1951 when they returned to Storm Lake when he joined the firm of Whealan and Elk Insurance, which later became Owen Elk and Holmes, and now Colburn and Elk. He was engaged in the life insurance and real estate business throughout his professional life.

He was avid golfer, enjoyed singing in his church's choir and in community musicals, enjoyed playing bridge and other card games, was known as a jokester, he active in various community groups including the board of the Methodist Church and Methodist Manor, the United Methodist Mens' group, past president of the Storm Lake School Board, president of the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce, Commodore of the annual Star Spangled Spectacular, and a Co-Chairperson of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE).

He is survived by his daughter Sara Jane (Sally) Elk of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sons, James Watt Elk and his wife Catherine of Bar Harbor, Maine, and Robert Thomas Elk and girlfriend Ulrika Johannson of Los Angeles, Calif.; five grandchildren Laurel, Martha, Claire and Kevin Elk of Bar Habor, Elizabeth Dixon of Philadelphia and his sister, Marianna Meier of Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Elizabeth Watt Elk, an infant daughter, and his son-in-law Stuart Paul Dixon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to The American Lung Association (61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006.) Lois Mack

Lois Mack, age 90, of Wall Lake, Iowa and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mack will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend David Koehler officiating. Burial will be in Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Mack Family Scholarship Fund at Buena Vista University, 610 W. Fourth St., Storm Lake, IA 50588.

No visitation will be held.

Lois Ione Lille was born in Lake View, Iowa on September 22, 1917 to Frances (McCarter) and Clarence “Dutch” Lille. The second of five daughters, Lois graduated from Lake View High School in 1935 and was selected as Miss Lake View. She received her degree from the Iowa School of Beauty Culture in Des Moines and worked as a hairdresser in downtown Sac City.

On September 1, 1940, she married Edgar Mack, a Storm Lake attorney, and they had two children, Karen Elizabeth and Warren Edgar. Lois was a devoted wife and mother. She loved hosting family gatherings of both the Macks and Lilles, playing bridge, fishing, and shopping with Karen. She had a flair for cooking—bread, Christmas cookies, turkey and apple-raisin dressing, and suet pudding were her specialities. She volunteered as a leader with the Youth Club at Lakeside Presbyterian, Karen’s Brownie Scout troop, Methodist Manor and Meals on Wheels. She belonged to P.E.O., the 37 Club, Penguin Club and was a charter member of Lake Creek Country Club. She delighted in her three grandchildren. An elegant lady, Lois was always gracious.

Lois is survived by her sisters Marian Swihart of Grand Island, Nebraska and Darlene (Herb) of Lake View, Iowa; daughter Karen (John) of Sunnyvale, California; son Warren (Linda) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; granddaughters Kendra of Minneapolis and Leslie of La Pointe, Wisconsin; and her grandson, Christopher Kulander, of Sunnyvale, California; and her beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Edgar, who died in 1992; sisters Elaine Lille and Marjorie Dettmann; and brothers-in-law Willis Dettmann and Albert Swihart.

The family would like to thank the loving staff at Twilight Acres, who took such good care of her the last five years, and the hospice nurses from Loring Hospital who made her comfortable in her last days.

Robert H. Miller

Robert H. “Bob” Miller, age 69, of Rembrandt, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral service for Mr. Miller will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the church Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4-8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2008 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present the entire visitation time.

Robert Henry Miller was born April 7, 1939 in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Frank and Mary (Demers) Miller. He was baptized in 1939 at St. Mary’s Church in Storm Lake and later was confirmed there as well. He enjoyed school and in 12 years of attending classes, he missed no days of school. When he graduated from Providence Consolidated Schools of Sulfur Springs, Iowa in 1957, he was presented with a trophy for his perfect attendance record.

On July 28, 1968, Bob was united in marriage to Marjorie Boettcher at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. The couple was blessed with two sons, Chad and Michael. Bob and Marjorie would have been married 40 years on July 28th, this coming summer.

Bob loved working on the farm and doing anything connected with agriculture. He drove truck for many years and also worked for the Sulfur Springs Elevator. He liked to be outdoors and enjoyed any kind of outdoor activity. He was a big fan of John Wayne and his movies. A loving husband and devoted father, Bob’s family always came first in his life. He will be deeply missed by those that knew and loved him,

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marjorie, of Rembrandt; son Chad (Lynn) Miller of Estherville, Iowa; son Michael of Agoura Hills, California; brothers John (Mary) Miller of Des Moines, Iowa, and Jim (Jan) Miller of Kingman, Arizona; sister Florence (Willard) Christensen of Storm Lake; mother-in-law Leona Boettcher of Storm Lake; sister-in-law Margie Miller of Buffalo Center, Iowa; brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Linda Boettcher of Richland, Iowa; extended family and friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and his brother, George.

Sidney F. Krebs

Sidney F. Krebs, age 63, of Storm Lake, Iowa died peacefully at his home with his family present on Sunday, March 30, 2008.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present from 5:00 to 8:00.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial fund for Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Hospice.

Sid was born on December 3, 1944 to Raymond “Swede” and Vesta (Paeper) Krebs in Storm Lake and was raised on the family farm near Varina, Iowa. He was baptized on December 31, 1944 at St. Columbkille Church in Varina and received his first communion there on May 6, 1951.

He attended grade school at Providence Consolidated School in Sulphur Springs, Iowa, and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1962. Following graduation, Sid attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri.

On August 28, 1965, Sid eloped with Judith Mohr to Salem, South Dakota to wed. Shortly after marrying Judy, Sid was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, where he was a faithful member. To this union, three children were born in Storm Lake: Halley, Amy, and Mitchell.

Sid spent his entire professional career in the agricultural industry, retiring from Farmland Industries. He was a well-respected, well-liked colleague and enjoyed the relationships he developed over the years.

Sid had several hobbies and enjoyed all sorts of activities including his barn and horses, lake living, and he especially cherished the time he spent with his family and friends. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband of nearly forty- three years, father to three wonderful children and grandfather to five admiring grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Judy of Storm Lake; his children Halley (Steve) Lee of Pierre, South Dakota; Amy (David) Fordyce of Carroll, Iowa; and Mitchell Krebs of Chicago, Illinois; five grandchildren, Sydney and Sawyer Lee; and Abbey, Jack and Joe Fordyce; a sister, Trudy (Leonard) Peterson of Storm Lake; a brother, Rex (Jennie) Krebs of Sioux City, Iowa; a sister, DeEtte (Don) Graham of Carson, Iowa; his mother-in-law, Ruth Mohr of Storm Lake; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

Sid was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Vesta.

Eloise M. Newell

Eloise M. Newell, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Monday, December 15, 2003 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Wednesday, December 18, 2003 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., where the family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00.

Eloise Margaret Blakeley was born on October 13, 1921 at Storm Lake, Iowa to George and Jesse (Martz) Blakeley. She spent her childhood in her parents’ home in Storm Lake and attended school there, graduating from Storm Lake High School. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake.

On September 1, 1940, Eloise was united in marriage to Howard E. Newell at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Their union was blessed with two children: James and Shirley.

Eloise spent her life making a warm and comfortable home for her husband and family, who she cherished and with whom she loved to spend her time. She was a loving wife and a devoted mother and grandmother who will be missed daily.

Left to treasure her memory are her son, James and wife Ruth Newell of Grand Rapids, Michigan; her daughter, Shirley Abeel of Colorado Springs, Colorado; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many other extended family members and friends.

Preceding Eloise in death were her parents, her husband Howard on December 2, 1992, three brothers and two sisters.

Eldor D. Sump

Eldor Sump of Albert City died June 7, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Hospital in Storm Lake. Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Tom Egger officiating.

Eldor Dietrick Daniel Sump was born on May 31,1913, to John & Mary (Rurode) Sump at rural Clarinda, IA, in Page County. He was baptized on June 22, 1913.

He first attended the Center Public School where there were only 15 pupils. He walked 1/2 mile carrying his dinner bucket or pail with his noon lunch. Each morning they stood outside by the flagpole and said the Pledge of Allegiance.

In 1925-1927, he attended the Immanuel Lutheran School where they had a religious class each day along with their other classes. He rode in a top buggy (which was open in the front) for 3 1/2 miles. It was very cold in the winter! There were 70 pupils and only one teacher! They had school all day and sat in double desks. Eldor sat with the same boy for three years. Eldor was confirmed in 1927. His chosen Bible verses were Rev. 2:10 & Rev. 3:11. During his teens, he enjoyed his church youth group, singing in the choir and playing on and managing softball teams.

Eldor loved it when he could start farming with his dad, which he did at an early age. His family bought their first tractor, a GP John Deere in 1929. He and his brother Herbert later bought a 1939 Allis Chalmers together. He enjoyed farming the hills of Page County for many years.

Eldor began visiting relatives in northwest Iowa and met Anna Louise Franzmeier. They were married on Dec. 17, 1944, at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Storm Lake. They first farmed on the “Nehring Farm”, west of Albert City and then on their “home place” southwest of Albert City.

This union was blessed with three daughters, Judith Ann, Jean Marie and Janet Kay.

Eldor enjoyed raising cattle, hogs, horses and a crop each year. He held various church offices during this time. He especially enjoyed being on the church dartball team and visiting with players from other congregations. He continued this until he was 80 years old! He loved his family and friends and always enjoyed going down to Page County to visit and reminisce.

He and Anna farmed until the fall of 1975 when they retired to Albert City. He then spent his time working part-time for the town, gardening, playing cards and going to the Albert City Thresherman Days.

Eldor and Anna were privileged to celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary last December. At the end of December, they moved into the Pleasant View Home in Albert City. Anna passed away there on March 1, 2003.

Eldor passed away 14 weeks after his wife died, on June 7, 2003, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Eldor is survived by his three daughters: Judy and Ben Malcom, Jean and Del Carlson, all of Albert City, and Janet and Rick Meyer of Alta. Grandchildren: Ty and Jenni Malcom, Dubuque; Tiffany Malcom, Colorado Springs, CO; Tara Malcom, Storm Lake; Jennifer and David Reddel, Ankeny; Jill Carlson and fiancé Michael Loehr, Naperville, IL; John Carlson, Ames; Angela and Aaron Gillespie, Davenport; and Shane Meyer, Davenport. Great-grandsons: Alexander Gillespie, Davenport; and Carter Reddel, Ankeny. Brothers: Herbert Sump and his wife Clara; Wayne Sump and his wife Elnora. Sisters: Ethel Wichman, Mabel Sunderman and her husband Mervil, all of Clarinda. Sister-in-law Hattie Sump, Storm Lake. Brothers-in-law, Otto Franzmeier and his wife Eleanor, and Edwin Franzmeier, Albert City, plus nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Anna, his parents John and Mary Sump, brothers-in-law, Bill Wichman, Wilbert Sump, Ewald Franzmeier and his wife, Annie, Eldon Franzmeier and his wife, Darlene and sister-in-law, Lorna Franzmeier.

Eldor is now in the loving arms of His Savior and is greatly missed by all who knew him.

Kaen Khaoorn

Kaen Khaoorn, age 84, died on Saturday, March 1, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral services for Kaen Khaoorn will be at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2003 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake with Pastor Barry Thongvanh officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery.

Kaen Khaoorn was born May 2, 1918 in Sayaboury, Laos to Tee and Bova Khaoorn. He grew up with his parents on a farm in Sayaboury, Laos.

He married Keo Khaoorn and had one son, Sai Khaoorn who resides in Laos. Following Keo’s death, Kaen married Sei Khaoorn and had 10 children.

During his working years, Kaen was a farmer in Laos. He was a member of the Christian faith.

Kaen is survived by his wife, Sei Khaoorn; four sons: Sai Khaoorn, Khio Khaoorn, Peter Khaoorn, and La Khaoorn; one daughter, Mord Khaoorn; three sisters: One Khaoorn, age 109 years, Noy Khaoorn, age 98 years, and Sy Imboua, age 81 years; and other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Keo and six children.

Rosemary Overmohle

Rosemary Overmohle, age 73, of Storm Lake died at her home on Wednesday, December 17, 2003.

Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, December 20, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Friday, December 19, 2003 from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m., where the family will be present. Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 3:30 and a Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 p.m.

Rosemary Koch was born at her parents’ home in Washington Township near Storm Lake, Iowa on October 11, 1930 to Paul and Helen (Schmitt) Koch. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, baptized there on October 19, 1930 and confirmed on October 4, 1941.

Rosemary spent her childhood in her parents home and attended country school for one year before enrolling at St. Mary’s School in Storm Lake, where she graduated from high school with the Class of 1948. Rosemary then graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa.

On January 15, 1953, Rosemary was united in marriage to Leo George Overmohle at St. Mary’s Church in Storm Lake. Their union was blessed with nine children: sons Michael and Robert and daughters Cindy, Susan, Laurie, Beth, Barb, Nancy and Mary. Rosemary and Leo celebrated 50 years together in January of 2003.

Rosemary worked as a surgical nurse for a number of years and served as a secretary at St. Mary’s High School from November of 1974 until her retirement on October 31, 1993. In her spare moments, she enjoyed quilting, kayaking, camping, traveling and putting together puzzles.

However, Rosemary’s most important calling was making a happy home for her family. She treasured any time she spent with family and friends, and especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rosemary was a loving wife and devoted mother who was loved very much and will be missed daily.

Left to cherish Rosemary’s memory are her husband Leo of Storm Lake; children: Cindy and husband Jerry Hugo of West Point, NE, Susan and husband James Garrett of Hampton, IA Michael and wife Diane Overmohle of Storm Lake, Laurie Wilson of Storm Lake, Beth and husband Ron Rubendall of Fonda, Barb and husband David Liske of Elkhart, IA, Nancy Pommrehn of Orange City, FL, Robert and wife Beth Overmohle of Storm Lake, and Mary Porath of McCook Lake, SD; grandchildren: Nick, Alexis, Todd and Travis Hugo; Jeremy and Kim Garrett, Jerome and Jessie Garrett, Amanda Garrett and Jeff Garrett; Jessica, Josh and Abbey Overmohle, Jason and Chrissy Overmohle, Justin Overmohle; Ted and Molly Wilson, Ben, Rebecca, Caleb and Katie Wilson; Chris, Tiffany, Nathan and Noah Rubendall; Brian and Heather Liske, Kyle, Adam and Jordan Liske; Andrew, Matthew and Melissa Pommrehn; Tyler, Shelby and Blake Overmohle; Heather, Brittni and Meghan Porath; great-grandchildren: Eddie Wilson; Hannah and Bailey Liske; and many other extended family members and friends.

Preceding Rosemary in death were her parents, her brother Robert Koch and his wife Margaret Koch, her son-in-law Byron Pommrehn, and three brothers-in-law: Robert Burke, Howard Mahaney and Jerry Harmon.
