Joan E. Wallin

Joan Elizabeth Wallin, age 79, of Sioux City, Iowa, died of cancer on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at her residence.

Funeral services for Mrs. Wallin will be held Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Connie Spitzack officiating. Interment will be at 3:00 p.m. that afternoon in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2008 at Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial in Joan’s name.

Joan was born August 12, 1928 at home in Porter, Indiana, the daughter of Alec F. and Esther M. (Anderson) Carlson. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Porter. At the age of 9 years, Joan lost her parents and went to live with her aunt and uncle.

She married the Reverend Dr. Ralph Albert Wallin on December 27, 1950 in Chesterton, Indiana. He was the love of her life for 47 years and has been sorely missed these last eleven years of her life. Joan graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois in 1950, where she received an A.B. degree. She received her M.A. degree in special education from Morningside College in Sioux City in 1980.

Joan taught school in various places, including Moline, Illinois, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Chicago, Illinois. While living in Sioux City from 1977 to 1987, she first taught school in Winnebago, Nebraska, and then at West Middle School in Sioux City. After moving to Storm Lake in 1988, she taught at the Fonda Community School in Fonda, Iowa, before retiring in 1994.

Joan was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake until recently, when she relocated to Sioux City, transferring her membership to St. Mark Lutheran Church there.

Joan was actively involved in many organizations, committees, clubs and volunteer work. She loved to entertain, travel, garden, read, play board games and complete cross-word puzzles. She cared deeply about education and was an advocate of special needs children. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include two sons: Dr. Stephen and his wife, Dr. Marta Wallin, of Pueblo, Colorado, and Ronald Wallin of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Rebecca and Richard Schwartz, of Sioux City; six grandchildren: Sylvia and Bruce Wallin, Crissy Schwartz-Dangerfield, Michael and Leah Schwartz, and Brandon J. Grant; two great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Elaine Carlson, of Des Moines, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, and the “sister of her heart”, her cousin, Marion P. Sperry.

Marita E. Dick

MaritaMarita E. Dick, age 89, of Silver Bay, Minnesota and formerly of Schaller, Iowa died on March 17, 2008 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 2:00 PM, Church of the St. Edward, 9401 Nesbitt Ave., Bloomington, MN. Visitation 1 hour prior to Mass at church. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Silver Bay, MN (Attention - Fr. Frank Paquette).

Graveside Service will be Thursday, March 20, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery in Schaller. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the local arrangements.

Marita was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Elenora (Schulte) O'Tool and her husband, Leo. She is survived by her children, Donna Moe, James (Patt), Ray (Lee), Roy (Sally), Melisa Dick, Diane (Don) Iverson, Mary (Eric) Lind; sisters, Leona Orth and Bonnie Mooney; sisters-in-law, Evelyn O'Tool and Marcella Dick.

Robert A. Haburn

Robert A. Haburn, age 87, of Albert City, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2008 at his home.

Funeral service for Mr. Haburn will be held Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 19, 2008 at the Bethel Baptist Church in Newell, where the family will be present.

Robert A. Haburn was born November 20, 1920 on a farm in Hayes Township, south of Storm Lake, Iowa. He was the second child of Lloyd E. and Grace J. (Combes) Haburn.

Bob attended Hayes Consolidated School until March of 1927, when he moved with his parents to a farm near Russell, Minnesota, where they lived for seven years. While there, he attended a country school near Russell. During this time, the family attended the First Baptist Church of Russell, Minnesota. Church and Sunday School were an important part of the rural life. Bob accepted Christ as his personal Savior as a young boy and was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Tyler, Minnesota in 1931.

In March of 1933, the family moved to a farm near Lake Park, Iowa. Bob attended Excelsior Consolidated School, graduating in 1938. Upon graduation, he continued to farm with his father in their dairy and general farm operation.

On October 4, 1942, Bob was united in marriage to LaVonne Lundberg of Alta, Iowa. Shortly after the wedding, he was inducted into the military, but soon received notice of deferment. The couple was blessed with four children: Kathy, Paul, Ted and Lori.

Bob and his family continued to farm in Dickinson county until January of 1955. Due to back injuries, they sold out, left the farm and moved to Newell. He was then employed as a Registered Sales Representative for State Bond Sales Corp. of New Ulm, Minnesota for the next 39 years. Throughout his career, he won many sales awards as well as several co-sponsored trips for he and his wife.

The First Baptist Church was their place of worship for many years. Bob was an active member, who had served as the Sunday School Superintendent and on the Board of Deacons. Presently, Bob and LaVonne are both members of Bethel Baptist Church.

Bob served on the Buena Vista Board of Review for seven years, as well as on the committee for Meals on Wheels and the Helpers Club at the Good Samaritan Center. While his sons were young, he was also very active in the Cub Scout organization.

He enjoyed golf (which his sons taught him), loved fishing, especially his trips to Canada and Minnesota. Bob especially cherished the many bus trips he and LaVonne took throughout the United States and Canada.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, LaVonne; his children: Kathy (Paul) Miller of Grand Lake, Colorado; Paul (Teresa) Haburn of Fort Worth, Texas; Ted (Van Marie) Haburn of Port St. Lucie, Florida; and Lori (Dale) Arends of Newell, Iowa; grandchildren: Courtney (Patrick) Clayton, Kelly (Eric) Schwarm, 1st LT. Matthew (Colleen) Miller, Danielle Arends, Rob (Emly) Arends; five great-grandchildren: Jessica Mayberry, Ethan and Ryleigh Miller, Carson and Cashton Clayton and Ryan Robert Arends; two sisters: Virginia and Juanita; and one brother, Bill; as well as a host of friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Grace; sisters: Mary Lou Hovda and Joyce Johnson; brother, Arnold; brothers-in-law, Cyril Bundy, Wayne Peterson, Wil Hovda and Glen Johnson.

Ruby J. Strandberg

RubyRuby Jeanette Strandberg, age 73, of Elk Horn, Nebraska and formally of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Life Care Center in Elk Horn, Nebraska.

Funeral services for Mrs. Strandberg will be held on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Sunday, March 9, 2008 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present.

On December 22, 1934, Ruby Janet Sievert was born in Alta, Iowa to Fred and Vivian (Roberts) Sievert. As a youth she was baptized into the Christian Faith. She attended grade school in Alta through the eighth grade.

Ruby was later married to Glen Strandberg from which they raised six children: Paul, Richard, Jerry, Todd, Jody and Tammy.

Over the years, Ruby loved reading and playing cards with her sisters. She was a great cook and enjoyed preparing food in her kitchen as well as Lakeshore Restaurant in Storm Lake, Iowa. Ruby took pride in cooking and baking; she was known as the “Pie Lady”. Most of all, she cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glen; brothers: Chuck Sievert and Al Sievert; and two grandsons: Nathan Webster and B.J. Strandberg.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Paul (Pat) Darnell of Fenton, Iowa, Richard (Sandy) Strandberg of Storm Lake, Iowa, Jerry (Anna) Strandberg of Omaha, Nebraska, Todd Strandberg of Omaha, Nebraska, Jody (Heather) Strandberg of Peterson, Iowa, and Tammy Reimers of Yankton, South Dakota; grandchildren: Kenny Darnell, Misty Nelson, Angel Riecks, Hope Bell, James Totten, Adam Strandberg, Brad Strandberg, Ben Strandberg, Abby and Colby Strandberg, and Jordan Reimers; and nine great-grandchildren; brothers: Wayne Sievert of Storm Lake, Iowa and Bill (Connie) Sievert of Pocahontas, Iowa; sisters: Betty Ammonds of Cherokee, Iowa, Mel Schnetter of Alta, Iowa and Marion Larimer of Sioux City, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Lois Sievert of Alta, Iowa and Ione Sievert of Storm Lake, Iowa; extended family and many friends.

Shane Handy

Shane Handy, age 37, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Tuesday, April 29, 2008 in Storm Lake.

Friends may call on Saturday, May 3, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 1:00 to 3:00.

Burial will be at a later date. There will be no other services.

Shane Handy was born July 23, 1970 in Spencer, Iowa, the son of Everette Handy and Debbie (Erichsen) Friedrichsen. He attended Storm Lake Community School, completing his education in 1987.

Shane was an outgoing young man who enjoyed spending time with his family. He spent many hours writing songs and playing his beautiful music. He was also very artistic. He loved his dog, Slammer. He liked his work, both here and at his previous job in Colorado. He valued his many great friendships in Colorado, as well as those he held here in Iowa. Shane will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his father, Everette Handy of Spencer, Iowa; his mother and stepfather, Debbie (Erichsen) Friedrichsen and Scott Friedrichsen of Schaller, Iowa; his daughter, Pesha Handy of Hawarden, Iowa; brothers Jade (Elizabeth) Handy of Des Moines, Iowa; Dustin Handy of Laurens, Iowa; and Toby Handy of Emmetsburg, Iowa, sisters Melanie Bressman of Spencer, Iowa and Jeŕal Bussell of Loveland, Colorado; maternal grandmother, Helen Erichsen of Des Moines, Iowa; and paternal grandparents, Junior and Estelle Handy of Spencer, Iowa; extended family and many friends.

Shane was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Floyd Erichsen.

Frederick E. Brandenburg

Frederick E. “Fred” Brandenburg, age 85, of Storm Lake died Friday, June 6, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be Monday, June 9th at 1:30 p.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Beverlee Bell officiating. There will be no public visitation, the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.

Frederick Eugene Brandenburg was born on October 28, 1917, in Kirklin, Indiana the son of Ovid and Mabel (Goins) Brandenburg. The family moved to Indianapolis where Fred attended schools. He graduated from Washington High School where he excelled in football. For 26 years Fred enjoyed working at the Indy 500 Races.

Fred served his country during World War II in the United States Navy aboard the ammunition ship the Mona Loa, he was honorably discharged in 1945.

He moved to Storm Lake in 1966 where he worked as the purchasing agent for Kingan & Company, later Hy-Grade Foods he retired in 1982. On September 14, 1970 he married Marjorie Thomas Siebels at the Methodist Parsonage in Storm Lake.

Fred was an avid golfer and was one of the charter members of Lake Creek Country Club, he was particularly proud of his two “holes in one” there. He was a fan of all sports and followed Buena Vista University and Storm Lake High School teams. He was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church.

He leaves to mourn, his wife, Marjorie of Storm Lake, his children; James Brandenburg and his financee Beverly Jarratt of Hendersonville, TN, Sheila Brandenburg, Christiana, TN, Lori Siebels, Des Moines, Marcia Siebels, Cypress, CA, Roger Siebels, Golden Valley, AZ, a granddaughter, Shelby Herlong, Christiana, TN and a sister Ruth Suggett of Newport, NC. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers.

George V. Peterson

George V. Peterson, age 91, of Lakeside, Iowa died Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at the University Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 14th at 2:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with the Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Friday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. to greet friends.

George V. Peterson, the youngest of nine children of Nels and Mary (Ort) Peterson, was born in Newell, Iowa on February 2, 1912. He lived with his family in Newell.

On September 18, 1935 George was united in marriage to Helen Toohey in Council Bluffs. To this union, three children were born.

George worked as a carpenter for all of his life, semi-retiring in 1979. Following his retirement, he continued to keep busy doing odd jobs. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing, gardening and fishing. George was especially fond of raising roses, as well as being an avid hunter. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include his son, Charles Petersen and wife Judy of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter, Shirley Herzog and husband Jack of Lakeside; grandchildren: Debra Williams, Barb Koehler and husband Jay, Bill Herzog, Sheryl Hunter and husband Mike, Mike Petersen, Wendy Groth and husband Gary, Melissa Newcomer and husband Mike, and Mark Petersen; great grandchildren: Aaron and Jim Koehler, Deana and Devin Williams, Whitney Hunter, Michael and Trevor Groth; sister-in-law Jane Toohey; nephews: Paul Toohey and wife Connie, Jim Petersen and wife Betty Jean, and Bill Petersen; nieces: Mary Jane Garrison and husband Lee, Phyllis Coddington, LaVone Kriskov and Margie Becraft; and numerous other extended family members and friends.

George is preceded in death by his parents, son Ronald Dean Petersen, three brothers and five sisters, and two great-granddaughters, Jennifer Jean Koehler and Mercedes Nicole Hunter.

Lois Jensen

Lois E. Jensen, age 83, of Holstein, Iowa died Sunday, May 4, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 8, 2003 at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva, Iowa with Reverend Paul Egger officiating. Burial will be in the Galva Township West Cemetery. The funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake.

Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva where the family will be present to greet friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Lois Elizabeth Jensen was born November 9, 1919 the daughter of Herman and Emma (Kropf) Schelldorf. She lived with her parents in rural Kiron, Iowa where she attended country school.

Lois was united in marriage to Russell Jensen on November 24, 1936. To this union four children were born: Jerry, Judy, Joanne, and Jon. They made their home on what is now considered the home place north of Galva. Here they lived for 22 years. Lois was an active farmwife raising her children and assisting with many of the farm duties. In 1973, Lois and Russell moved from the family farm to the Alta Golf course where they built their retirement home. They truly enjoyed their retirement for 10 years until Russell’s passing in 1983.

Lois was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Galva, Iowa. For many years, she was involved in Ladies Aid.

Over the years, Lois enjoyed her flowers and cooking, attending her grandchildren’s activities, knitting, and playing cards. She was also an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bulls, and Tiger Woods. Some of her most cherished times involved traveling and spending time with family. She and Russell divided their time between traveling to Lake Okoboji and Mercedes, Texas where they often entertained friends and family. Lois was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Lois is survived by her two sons: Jerry Jensen and wife Jean of Aurelia and Jon Jensen and wife Roxanne of Galva; two daughters: Judy Murray and husband Darrell of Racine, Wisconsin and Joanne Jensen of Flower Mound, Texas; one sister, LaJune Fineran of Denison; grandchildren: Jeff Murray and wife Tracy of Racine, Wisconsin, Teresa Larson and husband Brian of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jay Jensen and wife Maggie of Sioux City, Jed Jensen and wife Amy of Spirit Lake, Don Brandt and wife Sue of Plainfield, Illinois, Kris Vaughn and husband Trent of Flower Mound, Texas, Nathan Jensen and wife Nancy of Storm Lake, Nick Jensen of Iowa City, and Olivia Jensen of Galva; eleven great-grandchildren; and other extended family and friends.

Preceding Lois in death are her parents, her husband Russell, two sisters, one brother, and an infant grandson.
