Virginia K. Seeley

Virginia K. Seeley, age 81, of Cherokee passed away at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa on May 30, 2003.

Graveside services will be 11:30 am, Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at the Scandinavian Cemetery in Alta with Reverend David Arulnathan officiating. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 am on Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake prior to the burial.

Virginia Kathryn Hobbs was born on August 4, 1921 in Alta, Iowa the daughter of Francis and Mavis J. (Lindlief) Hobbs Jr. She attended school in Alta and Fairview, graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1938.

On August 7, 1938 Virginia was united in marriage to Ernest Leroy Seeley in Elk Point, South Dakota. They made their home in Galva prior to moving to Cherokee. To this union, six children were born.

Virginia sold Avon for many years and was top seller many times.

Survivors include her children: Phillip Seeley and wife Susan of Cherokee, Betty Haselhoff and husband Armon of Schaller, Lois Syndergaard of Schaller, Sherry Mills and husband Douglas of Linn Grove; daughter-in-law Julie Seeley of Schaller; thirteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren; and other extended family and friends.

Preceding Virginia in death are her parents, husband Ernest, infant daughter Sally Ann, and son James.

Arnold G. Else, Jr.

Arnold G. Else, Jr., age 65, of Galva, Iowa passed away Friday, December 24, 2004 near Galva after being involved in a one vehicle accident.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva with Reverend Paul Egger officiating. Burial will be in the Galva Township East Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be from 4-8:00 pm at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva.

Arnold Jr. was born May 28, 1939 at Battle Creek, Iowa to Arnold G. Sr. and Edith (Rasmussen) Else. In 1946, he moved to the family farm, northwest of Galva and attended Galva schools, graduating in 1957. Junior was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he was baptized on August 27, 1939 and later confirmed.

On January 5, 1963, he was married to Peggy Allen at Pomeroy, Iowa in the Wesley Methodist Church. They were blessed with a daughter and three sons.

Junior was a farmer at heart, avid fisherman and wildlife conservationist. He enjoyed gardening, bowling, cooking and smoking meats for family and friends. He was a 4-H leader for 25 years, past fair board member, Sunday School superintendent and teacher, church trustee and active in the county and state Cattleman’s Association. He was also an NK seed dealer for 39 years.

He was a great husband, dad, grandpa and a friend to all, young and old. There was never a child that didn’t love and adore him.

Junior is survived by his wife, Peggy of Galva; children, Grant and Shelly Else of Holstein, Dawn and Johnny Miranda of Missouri City, Texas, Stuart and Jill Else of Holstein, and Justin Else of Ames, Iowa; and eleven grandchildren: Michaela, Montana, Madeline, Alyson, Nicholas, Emily, William, Evan, Lance, Lucas and Savannah.

Also surviving are two brothers: John Else and Harlan and Jane Else of Holstein; two sisters: Judy and Gaylen Winterhof of Galva and Ardie and Don Camarigg of Surprise, Arizona; Peggy’s parents, Orin and Merna Hanson of Pomeroy; five brothers-in-law: David and Rosie Allen, Paul and Kathy Allen all of Pomeroy, Dennis and Jan Allen, Bruce and Deb Allen all of Houston, Texas, and Steve Allen of Denison; as well as a host of extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith (1980) and Arnold Sr. (1993); father-in-law William Allen (1967); brother, William Else (1963); nephew, Randy Else (1984) and niece Jodie Schulke (2004).

Beverly Joan Post

Beverly Joan Post, age 73, of Fort Collins, Colorado and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa died December 17, 2004 at Hospice LifeCentre at Columbine West in Fort Collins.

Funeral Service will be Tuesday, December 21, 2004 1:00 p.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, Reverend Dr. Beverlee Bell officiating and Jeff Post assisting. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Monday from 4-8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6-8:00 pm.

Joan was born January 21, 1931 in Lee Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa to Raymond and Thelma (Norby) Findley. She grew up in the Linn Grove, Iowa area and graduated from Linn Grove High School in 1950.

One March 9, 1952, Joan was united in marriage to Richard Neil Post at Shepard Air Force Base, Texas. Their marriage was blessed with four sons: David, Jeff, Gregory and Steven.

Joan and Dick made their home in Storm Lake for many years, where Dick was employed by the U.S. Post Office. Joan was a homemaker who spent her life making a warm and comfortable home for her beloved husband and family. She enjoyed visiting with people and loved having “coffee” with her many friends and family members. Dick and Joan were intent on traveling in their retirement when Dick was taken ill and passed away on February 2, 1990. After Dick’s death, Joan came back to Storm Lake to live, until she became ill, after which she went to live with her son, David and his wife Tracey in Fort Collins.

Those left to cherish her memory include her four sons: David of Fort Collins, Jeff of Burnsville, Minnesota, Gregory and Steven of Nederland, Colorado; eight grandchildren; one brother: Donald D. Findley of Fairfield, Washington, two sisters: Marlys Drake of Ocean Springs, Mississippi and Shirley Jessen of Storm Lake; as well as other extended family and a host of friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and sisters Janice Rath in 1964 and Bonnie Wilson in 2003.

Memorials in Joan’s honor may be sent to Hospice of Larimer County, 7604 Colland Drive, Fort Collins, Colorado 80525.

Dean Stull

Dean Stull, age 73, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Monday, January 26, 2004, at the family farm near Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 29, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Reverend David Koehler will officiate.

Friends may call anytime after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Friends wishing to send condolences to the family may do online.

Dean Stull was born on August 30, 1930 in Buena Vista County to Ralph and Bertha (Keith) Stull. He spent his childhood in his parents’ rural home near Storm Lake, attending Washington Township country school through the 8th grade, and then graduated from Storm Lake High with the Class of 1947.

On February 18, 1951, Dean was united in marriage to Carolyn Shannon in Storm Lake. Their union was blessed with four sons: John David, Randal Nick and Lonny; and five daughters: Jane, Cindy, Diana, Cheryl and Sonya. Dean and Carolyn would have celebrated 53 their 53rd anniversary in February this year.

Dean spent his life working the land that he loved, farming in the Storm Lake area. He was an avid NASCAR fan and liked to restore antique farm equipment. He enjoyed attending tractor pulls at county fairs. But the greatest joy in his life was his family. He was a loving husband, a devoted father and a doting grandfather. He loved having his grandchildren around him, and spent as much of his time as he possibly could with them. Whether it was helping the grandkids with a project in his garage or attending their various events, Dean always seemed to have children around him—and that’s how he liked it.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carolyn of Storm Lake; his sons: Nick of Ames, and Lonny of Storm Lake; his daughters: Jane and husband Sonny Madden of Storm Lake, Cindy and husband Marvin Wernimont of Rembrandt, Diana Hummel of Shenandoah, Cheryl and husband David DeMan of Rembrandt, and Sonya Vrieze of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Jennifer Péna, Christine Mileham, Michael Stull, Natasha Dailey, Cory Wernimont, Chad Hummel, Brian Hummel, Brianne Perrigo, Lisa DeMan, Andrew DeMan, Michael Vrieze, Jeremy Vrieze, Alex Vrieze and Jacob Vrieze; great-grandchildren: Felicia and Devon Madden, Jessica and Rebecca Péna, Sydney, Tanner, Brielle and Erin Wernimont; and many extended family members and friends.

Elna Thuesen

Elna Thuesen, age 100, of Solvang, California and formerly of Newell, Iowa, passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of November 23, 2004 at the Solvang Lutheran Retirement Home.

Memorial Services will be held at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa on Saturday, December 11, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is assisting with the arrangements.

She was born in Newell, Iowa to Knud and Anne (Christiansen) Thuesen, the youngest of five children. Her brothers and sisters were Dora Jensen, Jenny Husted, Harold Thuesen and Ernest Thuesen, all deceased.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa

Elna received her education in Newell, Iowa graduating from the Newell High School in 1923 and also attended Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa.

In 1926 she moved to California and made Santa Barbara her home, which has always had a special place in her heart. In 1984 she moved to Solvang Lutheran Retirement Home in Solvang, California.

In May of this year, Elna celebrated her 100th birthday and reminisced with family and friends about the many adventures of her life.

She always enjoyed traveling. Locally, she traversed San Marcos Pass on a one speed bicycle. In 1936 she took a four-month bicycle trip with her girlfriend, Elna Larsen, to Denmark and Germany and they covered over 700 miles. She traveled all around the United States by Greyhound Bus.

Elna camped often in the California Sierras and made the National Geographic magazine when she attended a ranger talk in Yosemite. She enjoyed doing volunteer work and participated in many meaningful causes throughout her life.

Many of her working years were spent in retail as well as doing manufacturing for the war effort during World War II.

She will be remembered by nieces and nephews Merlyn Jensen of Gowrie, Eula Petersen of Newell, Elva Jorgensen of Santa Barbara, CA, Ardis Tuttle of Newell and Miriam Rohlfsen of Des Moines, grand nieces and nephews, great-grand nieces and nephews and great, great-grand nieces and nephews and many friends. Two nephews, Virgil Jensen and Darrell Jensen, are deceased.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Solvang Lutheran Home in Solvang, California; to Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa; and to Direct Relief International.

Frederick O. Kempfert

Pastor Frederick O. Kempfert, age 81, of Alta, Iowa, formerly of Royal and Sanborn, died of cancer on June 21, 2004 at Sunset Knoll Nursing Home in Aurelia.

Funeral Services for Pastor Kempfert will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2004 at 2:00 pm at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva. Burial will be in the Galva Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 anytime after 4:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will greet friends from 6-8:00 pm.

Frederick, son of Otto and Elleanora (Westphal) Kempfert, was born on the family farm at Maribel, Wisconsin on May 6, 1923. He was baptized later that month at St. John Lutheran Church of Maribel.

He received his elementary education in the parochial school of St. John. He then attended Northwestern Preparatory School at Watertown, Wisconsin for a year, spent the next two years on the family farm, and then again enrolled at Northwestern Prep., graduating in 1943. Thereupon, he attended Northwestern College of Watertown, graduating in June 1947. He then entered the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Seminary at Thiensville, Wisconsin, graduating in June 1950.

On July 2, 1950, he was joined in matrimony with Esther Beck of Grafton, Wisconsin. Their union was blessed with a son, Elwyn, and a daughter, Lorna. In His Mercy, the Lord took Esther to Himself in November 1994.

Pastor Kempfert’s first assignment was as assistant pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church of New Ulm, Minnesota from 1950 to 1952. At that time he accepted a call to a 3-point parish in northwestern Wisconsin, consisting of St. Croix Falls, Centuria and Rock Creek.

In May of 1956 he accepted the call of St. John of Edgar, Wisconsin and Bethlehem of Milan, Wisconsin. By the acceptance of this call he became a member of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.

In the fall of 1960 he was called to St. John of Galva, Iowa and was installed there as pastor in November. Here he served for 19 years, which was half of his active ministry.

After this he was at St. John of Sanborn, Iowa until the end of 1985. He then entered semi-retirement status as pastor of Trinity of Royal, Iowa. In November of 1988 he fully retired and he and Esther moved into their own home in Alta. Since that time, however, he frequently was a pulpit supply pastor for churches in the area, and from January 1993 to the end of 1998 was part-time assistant to the pastor of Trinity of Cherokee.

In the Iowa District West, he was appointed as a member of the Constitution Commission in 1974, being chairman from 1978—1994. Congregations he served as interim pastor were St. Paul of Ida Grove, Trinity of Odebolt, St. Paul of Alta, Zion of Ocheyedan, St. Peter of Newell, and Zion of Storm Lake.

On December 1, 1995 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Schaller, he was joined in marriage with Clara (Covey) Engel.

Survivors include his wife, Clara; his son, Elwyn and wife Lisa of Aurelia; his daughter and husband, Lorna and husband Steve Bode of Schaller; five grandchildren: Brad and Brian Kempfert of Aurelia, and Traci, Brian and Becki Bode of Schaller; two sisters, Lorraine Pantzlaff of Greenleaf, Wisconsin, and Velma Buth and a brother Arnold Kempfert, both of Manitowoc, Wisconsin; and several nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles and step-relatives.

Preceding Pastor Kempfert in death were his parents, his first wife, Esther, and his granddaughter, Michelle.

Helen Tymeson

Helen Tymeson, age 91, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, October 25, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, October 29, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Duane Queen officiating. A private family burial will be held at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery prior to service time, under the direction of the Fratkze & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call anytime after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 28, 2004 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will greet friends from 6-8:00 p.m.

Helen Norma Waterman was born to George and Emily Waterman on March 31, 1913 in Newell, Iowa. One of eight children, Helen was baptized in the Congregational Church in Newell. She graduated from Newell High School and attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.

On September 29, 1940, she married Aikin Tymeson of Storm Lake. They had two children, Sara Jane and John Albert. Aikin passed away in September of 1974.

Helen was an active member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake for over 70 years, serving as Deacon and active in circles and Presbyterian Women while her health permitted. She was a member of Chapter EP of PEO and of the Delphian Study Club, BV Hospital Auxiliary, and several bridge clubs.

She leaves to cherish her memory her two children: Sara Gailey and husband James of Newell, and John Tymeson and wife Jodi of Winterset, Iowa; six grandchildren: Kevin Christensen and wife Janelle, Dan Christensen and wife Lisa, Molly Montag and husband Dennis, Jamie Gailey, Erin Morgan and husband Joel, and Amanda Tymeson; six great-grandchildren: Andrew and Travis Montag, and Paige, Dara, Reed and Carly Christensen; brother-in-law Lloyd Tymeson; as well as many very special nieces and nephews and close friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five sisters and two brothers.

Ila Gjevre

Ila “Betty” Gjevre, age 81, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, July 17, 2004 at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, July 22, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Father Bruce Lawler officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Betty was born on November 3, 1922 to William and Agnes (Mader) Essex in Bay City, Michigan. She was baptized in Michigan as an infant. She married Jesse Gjevre in 1979.

Betty will be remembered as a loving wife, a devoted mother, a treasured grandmother, and a caring sister and aunt.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Robert O’Brien of Omaha, Nebraska; three grandchildren and a niece, Marilyn Williams of Michigan.

Preceding Betty in death were her parents; her husband, Jesse Gjevre; one son, Richard O’Brien; three brothers and two sisters.
