John Patterson

John Patterson, age 33, of Lake View, Iowa died Saturday, November 6, 2004 in a car accident.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Summit Evangelical Free Church in Alta, with Pastor Doug Corlew officiating. Inurnment will be in the Cedar Cemetery in Fonda. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 from 4—8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6—8:00 p.m. at Summit Evangelical Free Church in Alta.

John Alexander Patterson was born December 11, 1970 to Lucinda (Garlock) Joens and Donald Dennis Patterson at Fonda, Iowa. He was baptized at the United Church of Christ in Fonda in April, 1970 and confirmed in the Schaller Presbyterian Church in 1984. He attended elementary school at Fonda in kindergarten and first grade, then moved with his family to Odebolt, where he attended grades 2 and 3. His family moved to Schaller where John completed his primary education, graduating from Schaller High School with the Class of 1989. He later attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.

John served in the United States Army National Guard from 1988 to 1990, and then enlisted in the United States Navy in December 1990. He served his country in the Desert Storm War aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Valley Forge, earning many commendations—Battle “E” Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with Bronze Star, Southwest Asia Medal with Three Bronze Stars, Navy Unit Commendation, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal—before receiving his discharge in November, 1994. John was awarded the Honor Gauntlet at the US Army Guard graduation ceremonies at Fort Campbell, Kentucky in 1988, and also earned the marksmanship ranking of Hawkeye Expert during his service to his country.

John was employed as a commercial electrician. He enjoyed fishing, biking, weight lifting and camping. He had great memories of the special times he’d spent fishing with his brother and uncle, his experience at the Boundary Waters, the Naval Dependents Cruise with his grandma, his Desert Storm Homecoming, and the 1:10 Bible Study with his Summit Evangelical Church friends.

Survivors include his mother, Lucinda (Garlock) and husband Rollin Joens of Alta, Iowa; father, Donald Dennis and wife Sis Patterson of Jolley, Iowa; brother Mike and wife Stephanie Patterson of Auburn, Iowa; paternal grandmother Gladys Patterson of Pomeroy, Iowa; uncle Bill Garlock of Lehigh, Iowa; and many extended family members and a host of friends.

John was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Donald Patterson and his maternal grandparents Bill and Janet Garlock.

Kamma Duitsman

Kamma Duitsman, age 84, of Arthur, Iowa, died at her home in rural Arthur on Monday, October 4, 2004.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, October 9, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, with Reverend Paul Johnston officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Kamma Margarethe Nielsen was born April 27, 1920 in Nr. Vium, Denmark to Kristen and Margarethe (Hustedt) Nielsen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran religion in her hometown in Denmark. She spent her childhood in Denmark and received her education there. Kamma then worked in Copenhagen as a seamstress during World War II.

Kamma journeyed to the United States as a young woman, arriving in New York City on June 30, 1947. She came to the Newell area and worked as a housekeeper for her brother, Jens, until marrying Robert Duitsman in Fort Dodge, Iowa on November 28, 1950. Their union was blessed with three sons: Kurt, Thomas and Thorben.

Kamma was a homemaker and devoted mother who loved making a warm and comfortable home for her family. She enjoyed sewing and liked to garden. Kamma enjoyed people and especially liked visiting with friends and family on Sunday afternoons, creating many fond Danish memories that remained dear to her.

Survivors include her husband, Robert of Arthur; her three sons: Kurt Duitsman of Arthur, Thomas and wife Leanne Duitsman of Boone, Iowa and Thorben and wife Cindy Duitsman of Sac City, Iowa; her two granddaughters: Jennifer and Stephanie Duitsman; and other relatives and many friends.

Preceding Kamma in death were her parents; brothers Hans Nielsen and Jens Nielsen; and sisters Astrid Rasmusen, Ragnhild Wilms, Anna Rasmusen, Kirstine Pedersen and Karen Pedersen.

Kathryn George

Kathryn George, age 93, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Friday, August 6, 2004 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass will be held Monday, August 9, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Dale George officiating as celebrant and Reverends Bruce Lawler and Eriberto DaCosta as concelebrants. Deacon Bob Lenz and Homilist Reverend Andy Hoffman will also participate. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 8, 2004 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present. A Legion of Mary Rosary Service will be held at 3:30 and a Parish Vigil Service at 7:00, both at the funeral home.

Kathryn L. Pitts was born June 19, 1911 in Cherokee county, Iowa to William and Gertrude Pitts. She was baptized in June of 1911 and confirmed in 1920 at Visitation Parish in Maryhill, Iowa. Kathryn grew up in Cherokee county, attending grade school at Visitation Parish School before attending St. Joseph Catholic High School in LeMars, Iowa.

On May 19, 1931, Kathryn was united in marriage to Leonard J. George at Visitation Parish in Maryhill. Their union was blessed with two sons: Dale and Richard, and five daughters: Marilyn, Janice, Mary Ellen, Judith and Rosie. Kathryn and Leonard celebrated 53 happy years together before he died in 1983.

Kathryn was a loving wife and devoted mother who spent much of her lifetime making a warm and comfortable home for the family she treasured. In later years, she continued to provide moral support for her family, and very much enjoyed visiting her children and grandchildren. Kathryn had a talent for and enjoyed cooking. She cooked for the parish priest at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake; if she learned anyone was ill, she made a point of learning their favorite food, which she then prepared and took to them.

An active and faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Kathryn participated and held offices in Catholic Daughters, Ladies Guild and Prayer Chain.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons: Father Dale George of Cave Creek, AZ, and Richard George of Collinsville, IL; daughters: Marilyn and husband Alfred Naughton of Carroll, IA, Janice Johnson of Woodstock, IL, Mary Ellen and husband Doug Palmer of Rockport, MO, Judith and husband Mike Murrell of Chilicothe, MO, and Rosie and husband Mark Vonnahme of LeMars, IA; 27 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Bob Rahn of Cherokee, IA; two sisters-in-law: Della George and Louise George, both of Cherokee, IA; and many other relatives and a host of friends.

Preceding Kathryn in death were her husband; grandson, Ricky Showers; brothers: Alvin, Melvin, Joseph and William Pitts; and sisters: Mary Ellen Leonard, Gertrude Messerole, Rose Zimmer and Helen Rahn.

Khoune Kavan

Khoune Kavan, age 93, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.

Buddhist Rites for Mr. Kavan will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Khoune Kavan was born in Vietnam on January 20, 1911 to Mr. Anh and Mrs. Kathi Kavan. He lived with his parents in Sonla, Vietnam as a child, attending school there through the 6th grade.

Mr. Kavan served as a Sergant with French troops in Vietnam from 1929 to 1937. In 1937 he was married to Mouan Kathi in Sonla, Vietnam. He was the Mayor of Mei City on Sonla, Vietnam before coming to the United States.

Mr. Kavan enjoyed the arts. He retired in 1979 and lived at Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake. He was a member of the Southeast Asian Church in Storm Lake.

Survivors include three sons: Edward and his wife Da Kavan, Tony and his wife Sone Kavan and Reno Kavan; a daughter: Vieng Kathi and her husband Som; a brother, Kan Kavan of Laos; grandchildren: Kheunmalay and her husband Mesa, Arron, Amanda, Malisa, Arissa, Marvin, Jesse and Samantha Kavan; and many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Kavan was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mouan Kathi.

Lorna M. Jewell

Lorna M. Jewell, age 81, of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Lorna was born on May 10, 1923, the daughter of Edward W. and Edna M. (Kischer) Meinking, on the family farm south of Albert City. Pastor Rink baptized her on June 10, 1923, at St. John Lutheran Church, in rural Albert City, and she was confirmed in 1937 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell by Pastor P.G. Stephan. She attended country school, rural Storm Lake, and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1940. She continued her education at a commercial college in Des Moines. She worked as an office worker after the war.

On July 6, 1947, Pastor Hoemann united Lorna and Bruce M. Jewell in marriage at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell. They were blessed with a son Bryan. Lorna was a loving wife and homemaker and enjoyed crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her son, Bryan Jewell and his wife Kay of Spirit Lake, IA; grandson, Brandon Jewell also of Spirit Lake; a brother, Robert Meinking and his wife Betty of Fort Dodge, IA; a sister, Joan Ohlsen and her husband Wilbur of Rockwell City, IA; and a sister-in-law, Betty Stewart and her husband Jim of Sioux City, Iowa.

Lorna was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Edna Meinking; and her husband, Bruce Jewell on July 23, 1998.

Funeral services for Lorna will be held Monday, July 26th, 11:00 am, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa. Reverend Michael Harman will officiate. Reva and Dale Arends will sing a duet accompanied by Donna Larsen. Trudy Peterson and Janene Grote will take care of the flower arrangements. Pallbearers include the following: Brandon Jewell, Art Mulder, Darren Voss, Todd Ohlsen, Leonard Peterson, and Ronnie Jorgensen. Burial will be at the Newell Cemetery under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home.

Ruth Love

Ruth Love, age 84, of Newell, Iowa passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at 10:30 am at the United Methodist Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Memorial Gardens in Boone, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 6:00-8:00 pm, Monday, August 16, 2004 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell where the family will greet friends.

Ruth Brunton was born February 8, 1920 in Boone, Iowa, the daughter of John and Lena (Dorman) Brunton. She attended Boone Schools and graduated in 1938. She received her diploma from Des Moines Area Community College in 1977 with Correspondence Secretary. She was a Warrant Officer in the Boone Wing Civil Air Patrol in the early 1940’s.

On July 10, 1945 Ruth was united in marriage to James Love. To this union, four children were born: James L. Love, Pamela Eaves, Phyllis Smith, and John R. Love. She also raised her granddaughter, Paula Love DeMey.

Ruth liked crocheting and embroidering, and also embroidering by painting.

Surviving Ruth are her children: James L. Love, Pamela Eaves, Phyllis Smith all of Pilot Mound, John R. Love of Payton; granddaughter, Paula and grandson-in-law Keith DeMey of Newell; great granddaughter Brittany Love; sister, Estella Henry of Fair Oaks, California; and a number of nieces and nephews as well as a host of other extended family members and friends.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers: Robert and John Jr., and one sister Lois Phipps.

Susan Peters

Susan W. Peters, age 59, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services will be Monday, December 27, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, with Pastor Steve Schultz officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime on Sunday, December 26, 2004 between 6-8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Susan was born January 17, 1945 in Storm Lake to Lewis J. and Viola (Thomford) McManus. She was baptized and confirmed in the Church of Christ in Storm Lake.

She grew up in Storm Lake, receiving her education there and graduating from Storm Lake High School.

On October 16, 1965, Susan was united in marriage to Ralph A. Peters, Jr at the Church of Christ in Storm Lake. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Brian and Jeff.

Susan was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake and was employed for 27 years at Trimark Buena Vista Clinic in Storm Lake, most recently as the clinic business manager. In her spare time, Susan liked to play cards, travel and bowl.

Susan was a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother, who treasured the time she spent with her family. She especially enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchild.

Those left to cherish her memory include sons: Brian and wife Truell Peters of Olathe, Kansas and Jeff and wife Cathy Peters of West Bend, Iowa; grandchildren: Brett Peters, Brii Peters, Megan Klemm and husband Shawn and Ruth Wilson; great-grandson Jacob Klemm; brothers: Ron and wife Shirley McManus of Tucson, Arizona, Mike and wife Bonnie McManus of Des Moines, Iowa and Pat and wife Kathy McManus of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; as well as other extended family and a host of friends.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents Lewis and Viola McManus and her husband, Ralph.

Verlene M. Walker

Verlene “Terry” Walker died on Sunday, January 4th, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, January 7, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Schaller, with Reverend Carol Gailey officiating. Burial will be in the Holstein Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Tuesday, January 6, 2005, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller.

Terry was born on May 12, 1931, at Holstein, Iowa, to Clifford and Ella (Schade) Terry. She was baptized in the Methodist faith in Holstein. As a child, Terry lived with her parents and attended grade school and high school in Holstein.

Terry was retired, but she kept busy baking homemade bread and her excellent Pride of Iowa cookies to share with her many visitors. She was a people person, and liked to keep in touch with her friends and family at morning coffee time. She also enjoyed her frequent telephone conversations.

Terry liked playing Bingo, card games and cribbage. Her constant companion was her beloved dog, Bridgett, who Terry delighted in spoiling.

Left to cherish Terry’s memory are a brother-in-law, Don Schmidt of Schaller; two sisters-in-law: Marian Johnson and Jan Terry, both of Holstein; and her many family members and friends.

Preceding Terry in death were her parents; four brothers: Floren, Willis and LaVerne Johnson and Clifford Terry; and one sister, Lorene Schmidt.

Wayne L. Swanson

Wayne L. Swanson, age 85, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Sunday, June 20, 2004 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, June 24, 2004 at 11:00 am at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Burial will be Thursday at 2:30 pm at Kiron, Iowa, under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home.

Friends may call on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 anytime after 4:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will greet friends from 6-8:00 pm.

Wayne Leroy Swanson was born July 16, 1918 at Kiron, Iowa to Roy E. and Viola (Buller) Swanson. He spent his childhood years in his parents’ home in Kiron, where he attended school, and graduated in 1935 from Kiron High School as the class valedictorian. He attended business school in Omaha.

On March 31, 1938, Wayne was united in marriage to Emily Elaine Eaton of Ruthven. Their union was blessed with three children, Peggy, David and Alvin.

Wayne served as a radarman in the United States Navy during World War II. He learned the craft of watch repair and worked for Paxton’s Jewelry in Storm Lake as watch repairman for 30 years. He was a member of the Isaac Walton League. Wayne was an avid fisherman in his spare time, but he also enjoyed reading and woodworking. Wayne and Elaine were faithful members of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake.

Wayne loved his family and treasured every moment he could spend with his children and grandchildren, and more recently his great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Elaine; daughter Peggy Miller of Storm Lake; sons, David and wife Joan Swanson of Topeka, and Alvin Swanson of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Steve Mimnaugh, Lisa Carlson, Corey Miller, Cindy Glass Brent Swanson and Andy Swanson; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding Wayne in death were his parents; two sisters: Dorothy Tranter and Dolly Stoner; and two granddaughters: Laura Mimnaugh and Tressa (Swanson) Torkelson.
