Almeda Oberg

Almeda Soper Oberg, age 93, a longtime resident of Silver City, NM, entered eternal rest on June 29, 2004 at Silver City Care Center. A celebration of her life through a memorial service was held on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at First United Methodist Church in Silver City. A second memorial service was held on July 24, 2004 at the United Methodist Church in Washta, Iowa.

Mrs. Oberg was born December 22, 1910 in Washta, Iowa, the daughter of Iphegena and Hilda (Bring) Soper. Almeda and her family came to Silver City in 1944. She taught in public schools over forty years, most years as a ninth grade English teacher at Stout and La Plata Junior High School. She was very active in her professional organizations at the local, state and national levels, receiving honors in each area. She was inducted into the Southwest District Hall of Fame in 1978.

Mrs. Oberg belonged to and/or held office in these organizations: First United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Kappa Kappa Iota and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Left to cherish her memory are two sons: Harold Oberg and his wife Greta of Silver City and Carl Oberg and his wife Charlotte of Mimbres, NM; grandsons: Rick Oberg and his wife Lyla of Silver City, Troy Oberg and his wife Laura of Tucson, AZ, Todd Oberg and his wife Christine of Albuquerque; granddaughter Sharolyn Roberts and her husband Gary of Silver City; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding Almeda in death were her parents; her husband, Ernest L. Oberg; infant brother, Ransom; brother, John Hawthorne Soper; and one sister, Carrie Ann Soper.

Virgil Lichtenberg

Virgil Lichtenberg, age 82, of Schaller, Iowa died May 16, 2003 at his home. Memorial Services will be held Monday, August 25, 2003, at 7:00 p.m at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with Military Rites by Amvets Post #66.

Friends may call from 6:30 p.m. until the time of service at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Virgil William Lichtenberg was born on November 8, 1920 in the Hanover community area to Edmund and Annie (Hintz) Lichtenberg. He was baptized November 8, 1920 and later confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Hanover. As a child, Virgil lived with his parents in the Hanover area, and he attended country school there.

Virgil served in the United States Army as a young man. While stationed in Texas, he was incapacitated with severe food poisoning, requiring that he be hospitalized for a lengthy period of time.

During his hospitalization, he took a correspondence course in library science and eventually became a librarian. He worked as a librarian in Omaha and later at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.

After his retirement, Virgil went into business with Lary Gunville in Storm Lake. Together they owned and operated a bait shop located behind Puff’s White Cap Inn along the lake.

Virgil liked to travel and see new places. He had a natural propensity for books and read a great deal. He was a gentle man who cared for all God’s creatures, but he especially liked cats. Virgil enjoyed playing the Spanish guitar. He had a good friend in Texas and they liked to play their guitars and sing together. Virgil’s favorite song to play and sing was “Good Night, Irene.”

Virgil Lichtenberg is survived by one aunt, numerous cousins, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Harold W. Matthaidess

Harold W. Matthaidess, age 88, of Early, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, Storm Lake, Iowa.

Harold was born August 16, 1914, at Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Reverend G.A. and Louise (Seisler) Matthaidess. He attended school in Sioux City graduating in 1932 from Central High School. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Early, Iowa.

Harold and Pauline Strohbehn were united in marriage on January 22, 1940, in a ceremony performed by Harold’s father. In 1943 they moved to Early and in 1946 Harold purchased, from his brother Otto, Matt’s Tourist Court, Service Station and Café which was the first of its kind in Early and which he operated until his retirement in 1977.

Following his retirement, he worked at Spring Lake Golf Course and helped his sons with their quarter horses. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed painting and drawing.

Harold is survived by his sons: Richard Matthaidess and his wife Vicki of Early, IA, and Lyn Matthaidess and his wife Rita of Adel, IA; four grandchildren: Chad and his wife Lori, Tim and his wife Sheri, Troy and Luke; four great-grandchildren: Bailey, Hannah, Jake and Cole; sister-in-law Venita Matthaidess; and brother-in-law Bernell Strohbehn and his wife Donna.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Pauline September 23, 1978; four brothers: Paul, Otto, Edwin, and Enno; and two sisters: Isma Kyle and Wilma Smith.

Henrietta Franz

Henrietta Franz, age 86, of Schaller died on Sunday, July 27, 2003 in the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 30 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller with Reverend Albert Buelow officiating. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 29 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00.

Henrietta Marie Schwiesow Franz was born January 22, 1917 to Henry and Marie (Springer) Schwiesow on a farm northeast of Chamberlain, South Dakota, one of twelve children to bless that union.

Etta attended country school for eight years. Her father died of cancer when she was eight years old, and it was necessary for Etta to help on the farm and find part-time employment. She later went to Sioux Falls and worked at the country club and did domestic housework for some of the country club members.

One August night Etta went to the Neptune Park dance pavillion southwest of Sioux Falls. At that same time, Marvin Franz was going to Augustana College during the days and worked for John Morrell Company on the night shift. He got off work early one night and decided to go to Neptune Park. He picked out the best looking girl that appealed to him and asked her to dance. Etta and Marvin believed that God brought them together. They were married January 1, 1938 at Zion Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls and were happy together for over 65 years.

Marvin later went to work for John Deere Company, Omaha, Nebraska at the Sioux Falls branch house. While Marvin served in the United States Navy during World War II, Etta and their son Robert lived in Sioux Falls. After Marvin returned home from his tour of duty, Etta, Marvin and sons moved to Schaller in August, 1950 to go into the John Deere dealership business.

Etta was a full-time homemaker and enjoyed gardening, card clubs, and church activities. Etta and Marvin enjoyed traveling to all 48 continental states, plus Hawaii in 1969 and Alaska in 1982, the Bahamas in 1966, and Germany, Switzerland and Austria in 1990, where they attended the passion play presented every decade at Oberammergau.

After encountering health problems in 1994, Etta went to live at Colonial Manor in Odebolt. Marvin drove every day it was possible from Schaller to Odebolt to spend time with Etta while she was at Colonial Manor.

Survivors include her husband, Marvin; two sons, Robert and wife Maureen Franz of Faribault, MN and Raymond and wife Jackie Franz of Schaller; one daughter, Pamela Franz of Storm Lake; four grandchildren: Nacelle and husband Joseph Winrich of Salem, MA, Daniel Franz of Duluth, MN, Kristine Franz and Debra Franz of Fort Dodge, IA; two great-grandchildren: Abby and Ben Winrich of Salem, MA; one brother Leaman and wife Jean Schwiesow of Madison, SD; and two sisters: Lucile Shovly of Madison, SD and Delpha Haselquist of Yorba Linda, CA; and many other friends and relatives.

Henrietta was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Karl, Harry, Sylvester, Sidney and Martin; and sisters Meta, Elthie and Regina.

Walter Becker

Walter Becker, age 86, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services for Mr. Becker will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Father Bruce Lawler celebrating the Mass for Christian Burial. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2008, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00. A Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 3:30 and a vigil service held at 7:00 p.m., both at the funeral home during visitation hours.

Walter Becker was born on May 9, 1922 to Casper and Susie (Lutgen) Becker on a farm south of Downs, Kansas. He was baptized in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Tipton, Kansas. Walter went to school in a one-room country school through the eighth grade and later attended high school in Downs.

He left Kansas to come to Storm Lake, where he lived with Don and Ruth Ford on their farm, helping with the farm work and doing odd jobs until November 1942, when he was inducted into the United States Army. Walter served as a Surgical Technician Instructor at Surgical Technician School at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado. He was sent to India to become a noncommissioned officer Sergeant 3rd grade in charge of surgery. He was honorably discharged in April 1946.

Walter returned to Iowa in July of 1946. He worked for Inman Electric, Jennings Super Valu and Don Merry Contracting until November 1947. He then began doing carpenter work on his own. At first he built kitchen cabinets, then homes and farm buildings. In 1952 he started doing bank work, which became his entire operation by 1956.

On May 6, 1947, Walter was united in marriage to Dorothy Faye Johnson. Three children were born to this union: Linda Kay in January 1949, Robert Walter on February 13, 1950, and Gary Raymond on June 10, 1951. Linda and Gary died in infancy. Robert and his family now live in Washington state, near Seattle.

Walter and Dorothy made their home in Storm Lake until 1955, when they moved to Alta, Iowa, where Walter headquartered his business, Becker Manufacturing and Bank Design Consulting Services. His business covered six states in the mid-western United States.

In 1962, Walter received his pilot’s license. He flew over 7,000 hours in 19 years, mostly for business purposes. He received his instrument rating and multi-engine rating. He owned six different airplanes: four single engines and two turbo-charged twin engine planes.

On June 26, 1976, Walter lost his wife, Dorothy, to cancer. He closed his business in October 1986. He sold the building in 1989 to the city of Alta, and it is now serves as the city’s community center.

Walter kept busy during his retirement years in his home workshop. He also did some traveling, but mostly just enjoyed being in his home.

He served on the board of directors of Security Trust and Savings Bank in Storm Lake, was a trustee on the Buena Vista County Hospital Board, and on the hospital foundation board. He served on the board of directors of Blue Cross/Blue Shield for western Iowa and South Dakota, as well as on various other Blue Cross advisory boards. Walter served on the Alta City Council, Alta Hospital board of directors, and was president of the Alta Industrial Development board. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, American Legion, Disabled Americans, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Casper and Susie; his children, Linda and Gary; his wife, Dorothy; his sister, Josie; and his brother, Francis.

He is survived by his son, Robert and wife, Karen; three grandchildren: Jeffery, Jason and Justin; six great-grandchildren: Grady, Lydia, Aimee, Kendall, Henry and Garrett; his brothers, Charles, Julius and Leo; his sister, Helen; extended family and many friends.

Harald "Harold" Grau

Harald (Harold) Haahr Grau, age 89, of Newell, Iowa, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2004 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, with Reverend Lillette Johnston officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

There will be no visitation held. Friends who wish to send condolences to the family may do so online.

Harold was born December 18, 1914 to Jorgen C. and Anna C. (Haahr) Grau northeast of Newell in Coon Township in Buena Vista County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the Danish Lutheran Church in Newell. Harold attended country school and in later years went to winter school at Grandview College in Des Moines, Iowa.

On January 24, 1948, Harold was united in marriage to Evelyn Waskom in Wickenburg, Arizona. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Joann.

Harold's first job was running a service station close to the family farm. During the World War II years, he worked as a diesel mechanic at Anderson Ranch Dam and towed cars across the mountains. He later owned and operated the Grau Motors and Implement in Newell, representing Chrysler, Plymouth and Allis Chalmers lines. He retired in 1975.

Harold enjoyed the outdoors and liked fishing and hunting. He was a fan of car racing and especially enjoyed playing golf with his friends and relatives. He found great pleasure in having coffee and conversation sessions with his friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Evelyn; his daughter Joann Grau and John Beckner of Grand Junction, CO; brothers: Solon and wife Marjorie Grau of Ames, IA, and Leo and wife Bernice Grau of Storm Lake, IA; sisters: Ruth Bennett of Sun City, AZ, Dorothy and husband Richard Stilling of Northridge, CA, and Ardyth Barber of Okoboji, IA; sisters-in-law: Kay Grau of Storm Lake, IA, Mildred Rogers of Newell, IA, Lucile Schnirring of Sac City, IA, and Crystal and husband Don Larimer of St. Louis, MO; a special God Son, Tony Weiland; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members and friends.

Preceding Harold in death were his parents; brothers: Holger and Theodore; brothers-in-law: Dean Rogers, Glen Schnirring, H. G. "Ben" Bennett, Charles Weiland and Jerry Barber; sister-in-law Leona Grau; and his niece Kristi Emmick.

Merlyn Boese

Merlyn Boese, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at Sunset Knoll Nursing Home in Aurelia.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at 2:00 pm at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will greet friends from 6:00-8:00 pm.

Merlyn William Boese was born July 29, 1915 in Grant Township, Buena Vista County to Edward and Malinda (Griffel) Boese. He lived with his family in Grant Township, Section 9 in Buena Vista County where he attended Grant Township Country School through the 8th grade.

On September 5, 1915 Merlyn was baptized and later confirmed on September 15, 1929 at the St. John Evangelical and Reformed Church in rural Newell. He was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, where he frequently ushered.

Merlyn was united in marriage to Evelyn Marie Lange on June 18, 1938 at the St. John Evangelical and Reformed Church in rural Newell. To this union three daughters and one son were born: Beverly, Barbara, Lynette and Jerald. They raised their family on the farm in Grant Township. He enjoyed many years farming until he retired in 1980.

When not farming, Merlyn enjoyed reading, watching baseball games and traveling. He was an active member of SERPACI (old car club). Merlyn especially valued his time with family and participating in the many family activities. He was active in his community and served on the County Farm Bureau Board, worked for ASCS, and belonged to the Storm Lake Kiwanis. He also worked at the Storm Lake Canning Factory, and served on the Grant Township School Board and the County Extension Council.

Surviving Merlyn are his wife, Evelyn Boese of Storm Lake; three daughters: Beverly and husband Ernie Glienke of rural Aurelia, Barbara and husband Paul Posivio of Calmar, Iowa, and Lynette and husband Randy York of Waco, Texas; grandchildren: Brian and Cindy Glienke of Aurelia, Dale and Kris Glienke of Aurelia, Keith and Marcy Glienke of Aurelia, Lois and Roger Morris of Spencer, Brent and Tami Posivio of Iowa City, Jackie and Todd Feller of Cedar Rapids, Justin York and fiancé Danielle McDowell of Houston, Texas, Jamie and Ed Brunson of Germany and Josh York of Houston, Texas; great grandchildren: Adam & Stacie Glienke, Courtney and Cody Glienke, Kyle, Jason and Brandon Glienke, Levi, Dana and Tanner Morris, Mike and Luke Posivio, Scott Feller, Kelsi and Sydney Brunson; as well as a host of other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son Jerald Edward on December 7, 1970.

Melvin Dannenberg

Melvin Dannenberg, age 94, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Friday, August 20, 2004 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services will be Monday, August 23, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, with Reverend Dr. Beverlee Bell officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Sunday, August 22, 2004 from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m., where the family will be present from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Melvin Henry Dannenberg was born on January 4, 1910 at Odebolt, Iowa to August and Matilda (Frevert) Dannenberg. He was baptized at Richland Methodist Church near Odebolt and later confirmed at the same church. As a child, Melvin moved with his family to Escondido, California, then to Hastings, Nebraska and back to Odebolt, where Melvin graduated from high school with the Odebolt H.S. Class of 1927. He went on to attend Iowa State in Ames for one year before returning to begin farming. In addition to his farm work, Melvin was in farm machinery sales for a number of years. He retired in 1976.

On December 28, 1944, Melvin was united in marriage to Lucille Miller at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. They were blessed with a daughter, Candace.

Melvin was an active proponent of good soil conservation practices, having learned the practice from his father, who was a co-founder of the soil conservation commission. Melvin himself served as a soil conservation district commissioner for many years.

During his retirement, Melvin enjoyed playing cards with his friends, and delighted in playing golf regularly. One of the highlights of his golfing career was the day he aced the number 5 hole at the Alta Golf and Country Club during Thursday afternoon league play.

Melvin was a loving husband and a devoted father whose family was always his first priority. He will be missed daily.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lucille of Storm Lake, his daughter, Candace and husband Bob Madich of Omaha, Nebraska, and his pet cat, Dusty.

Preceding Melvin in death were his parents, and his brothers, Lawrence and Walter Dannenberg.
