Mary McGuire

Funeral Mass for Mary (Leahy) McGuire will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday June 12, 2004 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Mary died on Tuesday June 8, 2004 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Friends may call anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Friday where the family will greet friends from 6-8 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. A Legion of Mary service will be held at 3:30 and a Vigil Service at 7:30 during the visitation on Friday.

Mary (Leahy) McGuire, daughter of Ed and Josephine Leahy, was born May 24, 1903 on a farm north of Danbury. She attended Tower Hill Country School until she was six years old, then she attended St. Patrick’s Catholic school in Danbury, graduating in 1921. Later, Mary taught country school at Danbury for four years.

On January 12, 1926, Mary was united in marriage to Charles T. McGuire in Danbury. The couple farmed in rural Danbury before moving into town in 1950. Charles died in October of 1952.

Some of Mary’s hobbies included working crossword puzzles, reading, sewing, tatting and crocheting. She also enjoyed singing, which she did for banquets and other occasions when she was young.

Mary moved to Sioux City in May of 1954 and worked at St. Vincent’s Special Diet Kitchen for 16 years. She retired in 1970. In February 1988, she moved to Storm Lake where she spent the rest of her life. In August of 1989, she entered the Methodist Manor.

She is survived by her children, Charlotte Sitzmann and husband Robert of Storm Lake, Laurence (Hooley) McGuire and wife Janice of Holstein, Patrick McGuire and wife Judy of Brighton CO; daughter-in-law, Mary Kay McGuire of Marion; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Leahy of Norman, IL; 21 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding Mary in death are her parents and husband; two sons: Cleo and Gerald; one daughter, Pauline Hanson; one grandson; one great granddaughter; one brother Martin Leahy; four sisters: Margaret Forch, Ellen Leahy, Leona Leahy, and Edna Brenner.

Ross Hartman

Ross E. Hartman, age 80, of Storm Lake died on December 25, 2004 in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Schaller Cemetery. Full Military Rites will be performed by the Alta VFW. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the services.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 7:00- 9:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Ross Eugene Hartman was born February 25, 1924, in Schaller, Iowa to Myron Phillip and Emma Jane (Bennett) Hartman. He lived with his family in Schaller until he was four years old, when the family moved to Sterling, Oklahoma. Ross attended school in Sterling, Oklahoma until he enlisted in the Army on May 24, 1944.

On June 25, 1945, Ross was united in marriage to Robbie Frances in Chickasha, Oklahoma.

He was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. As a child, Ross was baptized in Schaller and later confirmed in Sterling, Oklahoma.

During his enlistment in the Army, Ross served in WWII with the Company L 22nd Infantry. He attained the rank of Private First Class and was designated as acting squad leader soon after he came to his unit. The special honors he received prior to his honorable discharge on May 17, 1946, are as follows: WWII Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon, three Bronze Service Stars, the Bronze Star Medal, and the GO 6 Hq 4th Infantry Division 46 Army of Occupation Ribbon (Germany).

Following his discharge from the Army, Ross started work as a mechanic, then farmed, and later worked for Wunder Tire Shop. He retired from Wilson Foods in 1985. During his years, Ross was active in the church and the Buena Vista County Historical Society.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Robbie of Storm Lake; son, Charles Hartman of Iowa City; sister-in-law, Dema Leu of Duncan, Oklahoma; brothers-in-law: Ernest Kitsmiller of Moorehead, Minnesota and Don Kitsmiller of Correctionville; as well as other extended family members and friends.

Preceding Ross in death are his parents, infant sons: Jerry Ray and Dean Ross; and his siblings: Floyd, Ralph, Ethel Bruggeman, Archie, Cashie, Cora Rogers, Ben, Roy, Vera Hutton, George and Lewis.

Thomas H. Fraser

Thomas H. Fraser, age 82, of Green Bay, Wisconsin and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa died from natural causes on Thursday, July 22, 2004 in Green Bay.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, July 26, 2004 at 11:00 am at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Pastor Jamie Cutler will officiate with burial in the Storm Lake Cemetery following the services. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call before service time from 10:00-11:00 am at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends.

Thomas Hugh Fraser was born May 22, 1922 to James Hugh and Inez (Bakke) Fraser in Greenville, Iowa. Tom was born at his grandmother’s home in Greenville. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1939. Before the war, he owned and operated an oil station in Greenville. He entered the U.S. Army in January 1943 and served his entire overseas tour in the Pacific theater. He returned home in January 1946.

His entire adult life thereafter was working in both housing and heavy construction. He retired in 1984.

On May 10, 1947, he married Phyllis (King) in Jackson, Minnesota. Together they resided in Estherville, Iowa, had four children and lived in Estherville until 1967 before moving to Storm Lake, Iowa. Tom and Phyllis lived there for 32 years before moving to Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1999.

Tom’s lifelong joys were being with family, normally helping build or fix items, tinkering with cars and visiting with friends at the Elk’s Club or AMVETS.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis of 57 years; four children: Matt of Appleton, Wisconsin, David (Kathleen) of Ames, Iowa, Paulette (Gary) Rossman of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Tom (Sharon) of Fort Dodge; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild and one great-grandchild soon to arrive. He is also survived by his sisters: Ruth (Charles) Thurston of Spencer, Iowa, Phyllis (Bill) Bielfeldt of Ruthven, Iowa, and Mary Ann Fairchild of rural Spencer, Iowa, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents. Special thanks to the staff and nurses in the ICU unit and 3rd floor at St. Mary’s Hospital in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Victor A. Durán

Victor A. Durán, age 32, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Friday, April 2, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa after suffering a fall at work.

Funeral mass for Mr. Durán will be held Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Father Eriberto Da Costa officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may attend a traditional 24-hour Hispanic vigil from 12:00 noon on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 until 12:00 noon on Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Victor A. Durán was born on December 7, 1971 in El Salvador where he was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith before coming to the United States with his family. They settled in Storm Lake where he attended high school.

After high school Victor enrolled in the Radio Training Academy extension program. He worked at KAYL radio in Storm Lake and also worked in the electrician field.

On October 5, 2002, Victor was united in marriage to Maria Isabel Romero at the church of St. Mary in Storm Lake, where he and Isabel were members. He recalled his wedding day as the happiest of his life.

Victor loved music and enjoyed listening to it. He was very happy with his job in the radio business. He loved children and he and Isabel looked forward to starting their own family. He was a loving husband, a devoted son, a dear brother and a wonderful friend to many.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Isabel; his parents, Nicolaza Durán Rodriguez and Manuel De Jesus Zetino Toloza; brothers: Jose Guillermo Durán Zetino and Carlos Alberto Durán Zetino; sisters: Maria Esther Durán Zetino, Irma Noemi Durán Zetino, Ana Margarita Durán Zetino, and many other family members and friends.

Victor was preceded in death by Ricardo Durán Zetino.

Cecil Miller

Cecil Robert Miller, age 78, of Plano, Texas and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa died peacefully at his home on March 11, 2005.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 11:00 am at the Church of Christ in Storm Lake, Iowa, with Pastor Jack Barber officiating. Interment will follow at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake, under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

There will be no visitation prior to the memorial service, but after the services, family and friends are invited to gather together to share memories and celebrate Mr. Miller’s life.

Cecil Robert Miller was born in Murray, Iowa on April 3, 1926 to George William and Mamie (Claypool) Miller. In 1943, Cecil graduated from high school in Storm Lake, Iowa. He then joined the Navy and served during World War II in the Philippine theatre. After returning home, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service (when stamps were 3 cents). It was during this time that he met his future bride at the Cobblestone Ballroom in Storm Lake and they were married June 25, 1950. Cecil changed careers at that time and farmed in the Storm Lake area for seven years before moving away. They were members of the Storm Lake Church of Christ and enjoyed their involvement in the choir.

Cecil and his family, including his father George, moved to East Peru, Iowa in 1957 where he farmed for the next 37 years. He was an honest, kind man and he enjoyed being with family and friends, playing bridge and cribbage, and cheering for all manner of sports. He had excellent taste in jazz music, a great sense of humor, and loved to golf and bowl. Cecil was very active in various civic organizations and was known for his community spirit.

Farming was Cecil’s life and in 1990 he began making trips from Iowa to Dalhart in the Texas panhandle, to help his son-in-law, Bill Kruse, with his farming operation. After he sold the farm in Madison County and moved to West Des Moines, Iowa, he continued to travel to Dalhart to farm. In May of 2004, Cecil and Maxine moved to Plano, Texas, to be closer to their Texas family, leaving behind many cherished friends and family. He passed away peacefully in his home on the morning of March 11, 2005.

His mother, father, and two brothers, Lester Freel Miller and Russell Harken Miller, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine Mae (Nielsen) Miller of Plano, Texas; three children, Debby Kruse and husband Bill of Irving, TX, Mark Miller of Los Angeles, California, and Melinda Brown and husband Jim of Virginia Beach, Virginia; two brothers, Kenneth Miller and wife Maxine of Spencer, Iowa and John Miller of Phoenix, Arizona; five grandchildren, Jodi (Kruse) Owens and husband Christian of Lewisville Texas, Stacey Kruse and fiancée Will Hartung of Irving, Texas, Tyler Kruse and wife Adrianne of Dallas, Texas, and Morgan and Mackenzie Brown of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one great-grandson, Cade Patrick Owens of Lewisville, Texas; many beloved nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Eugene L. Pishek

Eugene L. “Gene” Pishek, age 70, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Sunday, December 18, 2005 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Reverends Bruce Lawler and Eriberto DaCosta serving as concelebrants. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, 2005, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. In addition, a Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday.

Eugene Louis Pishek was born to Robert and Marie (Navotny) Pishek on November 26, 1935 at Tabor, South Dakota. He received his education in the Tyndall school system, and graduated from Tyndall High School in Tyndall, South Dakota with the Class of 1953.

Gene joined the South Dakota Air National Guard in 1958 and served his country until he was honorably discharged in 1965.

On June 13, 1959, Gene was united in holy matrimony to Donna Pechous at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor, South Dakota. The couple was blessed with six children: Teresa, Mark, John, Mary Lauren, Paul and Mary. Gene and his family moved to Storm Lake in 1967 to join the Bomgaars staff. He later worked for Buena Vista County in its road maintenance department. Gene retired from his work at B.V. County in December 2000. He was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake

Gene was a loving husband and devoted father who treasured his family above all else. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, visiting and playing cards. Gene also enjoyed being outdoors and puttering about in the yard at his home. He was a past member of the Storm Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

Gene loved music and delighted in the time he spent playing his bass horn and singing with the American Heritage Singers and Musicians. He enjoyed all types of music, but had a real soft spot in his heart for a polka. Gene will be remembered with great love and missed dearly by his family and many friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 46 years, Donna of Storm Lake; daughter Teresa (Alan) Vonnahme of LeMars, Iowa; son Mark (Lisa) Pishek of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; son John Pishek of Lincoln, Nebraska; son Paul Pishek of Auburn, Iowa; daughter Mary (Sean) Dailey of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren Molly, Jill and Becca Vonnahme of LeMars, Iowa, and Mick and Lauren Pishek of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; as well as many extended family members and a host of friends.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marie Pishek; and an infant daughter, Mary Lauren Pishek.

Joshua Ryan Castro

Funeral services for one-year-old Joshua Ryan Castro, son of Eliseo and Xiomara Castro of Alta, Iowa were held at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with Father Matt Hewitt officiating. Burial is in Woodlawn Cemetery at Alta.

Visitation was held on Monday, June 20, 2005 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m.

Joshua was born April 15, 2004 in Sioux City, Iowa. He died June 18, 2005 at University Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

Katherine Bowles

Katherine Bowles, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, April 3, 2005 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Memorial Services will be held Thursday, April 7, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Inurnment will be in North Lawn Cemetery in Spencer. There will be no visitation prior to the memorial service. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Katherine was born April 20, 1912 to J. Onesine and Laura (Lewis) Legere at Linn Grove, Iowa. She received her education in the Spencer Community Schools, where she graduated from high school.

On August 20, 1934, Katherine was united in marriage to Arthur E. Bowles while on a fishing trip to Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with two sons: Alan and Gary. Katherine had many interests in her life, but her family was most important to her, and she treasured the time she could spend with them. She also maintained a close tie to all of her many nieces and nephews.

Katherine was a member of many community organizations including Eastern Star and Sewing Club. She was an original member of the hospital auxiliary and a member of Beta Sigma Phi for more than 75 years. In the time she had to call her own, Katherine enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, sewing and having coffee with friends. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Left to cherish her memory is her son, Alan Bowles of Arnolds Park, Iowa; grandson, Jeffrey Bowles of Ames, Iowa; many dear nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, Onesine and Laura Legere; husband Arthur; son Gary; sisters Eva, Ethel, Blanch and Helen; and niece Margaret Lykins.

Marlys Brown

Marlys Brown, age 68, of Storm Lake, Iowa died August 7, 2005 in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Monday, August 8, 2005 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where family will greet friends from 6-8:00 p.m. A Legion of Mary Rosary Service will be held at 3:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7: 00 p.m., both at the funeral home.

Marlys Ann Johnson was born March 3, 1937 to Henry “Hank” and Catherine (Koppie) Johnson in Mallard, Iowa. She was baptized in the Roman Catholic faith as a baby in 1937 and later confirmed in the church. She remained a faithful member of the Catholic Church throughout her life.

Marlys received her education in the Laurens, Iowa school system, graduating from Laurens High School in 1955. On October 29, 1955, she was united in marriage to Jens “Pete” Brown. Their union was blessed with four children: James “Jim”, Gary, Richard and Thane.

Marlys was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake at the time of her death, but held offices over the years at the Catholic Church in Laurens. She was also a member of BPOE Lodge (Elks) in Storm Lake and her Birthday Club. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and playing cards and dominoes. Marlys loved flowers and liked to spend time in Bible study with Thane. Family and friends always were first in Marlys’ life, however, and she especially treasured the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. Her presence will be missed by all those who loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: James “Jim” and wife Lisa Brown of Storm Lake, Gary Brown of Linn Grove, Iowa, Richard and wife April Brown of Storm Lake and Thane and wife Kelly Brown of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Anson and Austin Brown, Kate and Jordan Brown, Richelle and Ashley Brown, Nam and Lan Huong Brown; brothers: Merlyn “Bud” and wife Elvie Brown of St. Louis, Missouri and Ron and wife Rosie Johnson of Laurens; half-sisters: Helen Vaudt of Harlingen, Texas, Louella and husband Gene Ryen of Pocahontas, Iowa, and Viola Koster of Dover, Arkansas; brother-in-law Lee Pomeroy of Spirit Lake, Iowa; as well as extended family and a host of friends.

Marlys was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Catherine Johnson; her husband of more than 42 years, Jens “Pete” Brown, on June 16, 1999; two sisters: Arlene Pomeroy and Joleen “Romelle” Johnson; half-sisters: Ivadel Mumford and Genevieve Critser; and brother-in-law Albert “Jake” Vaudt.
