Grace Weaver

Grace Weaver, age 68, of Marathon, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Weaver will be held on Monday, June 16, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Marathon. Burial will be in Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Marathon, where family will be present for the entire visitation time.

Grace Ellen Staples was born on January 3, 1940 in Lake City, Iowa to Clifford and Ethel (Hoyle) Staples. She attended grade school in Lohrville, Iowa and later graduated from Hayes Township School in rural Storm Lake, Iowa in 1957. Her younger years were spent in the Storm Lake area. Grace worked at the movie theater as a ticket taker and later at the downtown bookstore.

On June 28, 1959, Grace was united in marriage to Alvin “Tuck” Weaver at the Baptist Church in Storm Lake. Shortly after their wedding, Tuck and Grace moved to Mason City, Iowa for a short time, before making their home in Marathon, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children: Alvin Jr., Michael, Constance and Candace.

Grace was a very active community member. She was a member of the Marathon United Methodist Church, served on the Marathon City Council, as well as the Baseball/Softball Community organization. Additionally, Grace had worked at Buena Vista University and the Marathon Farmer’s Coop. She was not scared of hard work and demonstrated this value by the many hours she would spend over the years tirelessly picking up rocks and walking beans.

Her family and grandchildren were the love of her life. Grace found much pride and enjoyment in spending time with her loved ones and friends. She was a great friend, who possessed a generous personality. Over the years, Grace enjoyed playing golf, being outdoors, attending craft shows and auctions, playing cards, cooking, baking pies and making homemade noodles. She had a great sense of humor and was quick-witted. She will forever be remembered as a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Michael (Nancy) Weaver of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; daughter, Connie (Ruben) Mendoza of Lakeside, Iowa; daughter, Candi (Larry) Nielsen of Newell, Iowa; grandchildren: Michelle (Andy) Riesner, Cassie Weaver, Amber Weaver, Brandon Nielsen, Alex Weaver, Bryce Nielsen and Ian Morales; great granddaughter, Katie Riesner; brothers: William “Bill” (Flo) Staples of Sheldon, Iowa and Raymond “Butch” (Colleen) Staples of Kerrville, Texas; several nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents; her infant son, Alvin, Jr.; her husband, Alvin “Tuck” Weaver in March 2007; sisters: Clara Kerner and Donna Hunt; brothers: Roy Staples, Clifford “Bud” Staples, Charlie Staples, Ken Potts and Don Potts.

Keo Banhleuxai

Keo Banhleuxai, age 42, of Storm Lake, passed away May 27, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Traditional Buddhist Rites for Keo Banhleuxai will be held Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 1:30p.m. at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Keo Banhleuxai was born October 15, 1965 in Savanhketh, Laos, the daughter of Phao Phommakhot and Kap Phimmajaneh. She was married to Sifong Vongnakhone in January of 1990 in Thailand.

Keo had a passion for fishing, collecting purses and jewelry. She also loved to cook and watch movies. Her family held a very special place in her heart. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory is husband, Sifong; six children: Nittaya (Linthong) Xayyavong of Storm Lake; Deuan Banhleuxai of Storm Lake; Douan Banhleuxai of Storm Lake; Enoi Banhleuxai of Storm Lake; Emmy Banhleuxai of Storm Lake and Emily Banhleuxai of Storm Lake; sisters: Daeng Sounavanh of Wayzalia, California; Dao Phimsen of Storm Lake; Khao Phommakhot of Seattle, Washington; Tao (Andy) Phommakhot of Logansport, Indiana and Lao Phommakhot of Porterville City, California; four grandchildren; extended family and many friends.

She is preceded in death by her mother, and brother, Toui.

Marjorie McGowan

Marjorie McGowan, age 88, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Friday, March 28, 2008 at her residence in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass for Mrs. McGowan was held Monday, March 31, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Reverends Bruce Lawler and Paul Kelly concelebrated the Mass for Christian Burial. Burial is in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Fonda, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation was held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, 2008 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. A rosary was recited at 4:00 p.m. and a parish vigil service was held at 7:00 p.m., both at the funeral home.

Marjorie Opal Ashbrook was born June 28, 1919, in Rockwell City, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Mabel (Wisthoff) Ashbrook. She was baptized as an infant and confirmed her faith as a youth. Marjorie received her education at Jolley, Iowa, graduating from Jolley High School in 1936.

On February 17, 1941, Marjorie was united in marriage to Vincent A. McGowan at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Pomeroy, Iowa. The couple was blessed with eleven children: Patricia, Robert, Karen, Sharon, Ronald, Richard, William, Janice, Michael, Larry, and Judy. The couple lived in Marathon, Iowa, until they moved to Storm Lake in 1982.

Marjorie was a loving and devoted wife and mother who treasured her family and loved keeping a warm comfortable home for them. She loved flowers and enjoyed tending her garden of flowers as well as the vegetables she grew to preserve for winter meals for her family. She took great enjoyment from meeting and greeting her neighbors at their various coffee times. Marjorie was an avid reader of all types of books and loved a good game of cards. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Catholic Daughters of America, and St. Mary’s Guild.

Marjorie will be remembered as a kind and caring person. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Patricia of Storm Lake; Robert (Fran) McGowan of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota; Karen (Monte) Leiting of Carroll, Iowa; Sharon (Howard) Weitl of Audubon, Iowa; Ronald McGowan of Lakewood, Colorado, Richard McGowan of Des Moines, Iowa; William McGowan and special friend, Barb DeWitte of Lakewood, Colorado; Jan (Richard) Nelson of Manson, Iowa; Michael (Janet) McGowan of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Larry (Wendy) McGowan of Lakewood, Colorado; and Judy (Kelly) Netsch of Storm Lake; 14 grandsons: Tony (Melissa) McGowan, Dan McGowan, Bob Lenz, John (Angie) Weitl, Mike Weitl, Dan (Tina) Drysol, Chad Allen, Christopher Nelson, Colten Nelson, Sean McGowan, Luke McGowan, Patrick McGowan, Nick Netsch, and Tyler Netsch; eight granddaughters : Sherri (Bob) Harms, Angie (Lorne) Hupp, Kelly (Craig) Miller, Kayleen (Sam) Bertman, Amanda Roed, Stephanie Allen, Courtney Nelson, and Jessica (Doug) O’Bannon; 25 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Raymond “Bud” (Suzanne) Ashbrook of Sun City , Arizona; and Bill (Shirley) Ashbrook of Omaha, Nebraska; one sister, Jean (Dave) Van Fleet of Omaha, Nebraska; two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Schmakede of Arthur, Iowa; and Gwen Ashbrook of Eager, Arizona; many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Marjorie is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vincent; sister, Mary Pirie and her husband, Kenneth; brother Frank Ashbrook and his wife, Betty; brother Jim Ashbrook; brother Charles Ashbrook Jr.; and infant twins, Irma and Phillip Ashbrook.

Virgil B. Jones

Virgil Byron Jones, age 85, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Services for Mr. Jones will be held on Monday, May 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Sunday, May 18, 2008 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Virgil was born January 1, 1923 in Rossie, Iowa, the son of Byron and Ruth (Lundt) Jones. He was baptized in the Methodist Church as an infant and later confirmed his faith in that church as a youth. He attended grade school in Spencer, Iowa before moving to Storm Lake during the middle of his junior year. He graduated from Storm Lake High School. Virgil then served his country in the United States Army as an engineer during World War II, and was awarded the Bronze Star .

On October 12, 1947, Virgil was united in marriage to Doris Esther Anderson at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Marcia, and a son, Brad.

Throughout the years, Virgil remained very active in his work and in community affairs. Virgil owned and operated Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery and Jones’s Nursery, in which he later helped his son. He also worked for many years at Iowa Public Service Co., concluding his career there at the position of Safety Director.

Virgil served as Assistant Chief on the Storm Lake Fire Department, was a member of the Elks Club, was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, and was a member of Alta V.F.W. Post 6172. He was a sports fan who enjoyed watching his favorite teams, the Iowa Hawkeyes, St. Louis Cardinals, and the Chicago Bears. He also enjoyed playing Pitch and many other card games. He was a friend to many and will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Marcia (Larry) Lawrence of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; his son, Brad (Diane) Jones of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Marisa Bolton and her husband Brian of Trophy Club, Texas; Ben Jones of West Des Moines, Iowa and Jenny Jones of Storm Lake; his brother-in-law, David Chapman of Taylorsville, North Carolina; extended family and many friends.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris, in 2007; his twin sister, Virginia Wood and her husband, Gene; and his sisters, Cleone Messenger and Wilma Chapman.

Elaine Page

Margaret Elaine Page, age 84, of Alta, Iowa, passed away peacefully Monday, February 13, 2006 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend David Koehler officiating. Inurnment will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Wednesday, February 15, 2006, where the family will be present from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Margaret Elaine Holben was born August 23, 1921 in Pisgah, Iowa, the daughter of the late John and Tessie (Jones) Holben. She attended Pisgah High School where she was Valedictorian of her graduating class. Elaine then went on to graduate from the Sioux City School of Business in 1940. As a young person, she was an accomplished singer and played the organ for church services.

Elaine met Sherman Archie Page at a Civilian Conservation Corps dance in Soldier, Iowa. They were married shortly thereafter in August of 1941. The couple later moved to Storm Lake, where they purchased the local bakery and Elaine spent her time decorating cakes. Page’s Storm Lake Bakery thrived under their ownership for the next 15 years before they sold the business to their son, Brent.

Following Elaine and Sherm’s “retirement,” Elaine opened Page by Page Bookstore in Storm Lake, a perfect place to combine Elaine’s business acumen and her passion for reading. She was an avid fan of college basketball and loved all dogs, but especially her dogs, Sally and Lilly.

Of all the accomplishments in Elaine’s life, she was most proud of her family, each of whom she treasured. Her children and grandchildren will remember her as always going above and beyond duty’s call. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Elaine is survived by her five sons: Sherman Douglas and special friend Peg of Alta; Gregory and wife Patricia of West Des Moines, Iowa; Charles Kirk and wife Lisa of Fon du Lac, Wisconsin; Brent and wife Karen of Storm Lake; and Scott and wife Jeanne of Fon du Lac, Wisconsin; 15 grandchildren: Sherman David and wife Gena of Chicago, Illinois; Sarah Verrips and husband Larry of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Jenifer Sliefer and husband Trent of Phoenix, Arizona; Maria Witt and husband Jason of Phoenix, Arizona; Sherri Nichols and husband Marc of Eagan, Minnesota; Liz Page and husband Zaki of Portland, Oregon; Logan, Andy and Sean Page of Fon du Lac, Wisconsin; Courtney Engelson and husband Davin of Chicago, Illinois; Tyler Page of Iowa City, Iowa; Andrew Barnett of Iowa City, Iowa; Brian Barnett and wife Stacey of Joplin, Missouri; and Zach and Nicholas Page of Fon du Lac, Wisconsin; eight great-grandchildren: Noah and Max Page, Alex and Abbie Verrips, Trey, Jack and Dylan Page, and Mia Witt; as well as extended family and a host of friends.

Preceding Elaine in death were her parents and her husband of 47 years, Sherm Page.

Elvin B. Schimmer

Elvin B. Schimmer, age 60, of Galva, Iowa died on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at his home in Galva.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 15, 2003, at 10:30 a.m at the Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Holstein with Reverend David Hemann officiating. Burial will be held in the Calvary Cemetery in Holstein.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m Friday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Holstein, where the family will be present. There will be a Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and Scripture Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m. The Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Elvin B. Schimmer was born on November 9, 1943 at Battle Creek, Iowa to Leo and Elizabeth (Schleimer) Schimmer. He was baptized in the Catholic faith in Anthon, Iowa and later confirmed in Schaller. He grew up in his parents home in Galva, Iowa, attending school in Galva through his high school graduation with the Class of 1962. He served his country with honor in the National Guard from 1965-1968.

On December 5, 1970, Elvin was united in marriage to Janet Gaskill at Cherokee, Iowa. This union was blessed with a son, Kyle and a daughter, Melanie.

Elvin was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Holstein, where he was a member and treasurer of the Men’s Club and served on the religious education board. He spent his life as a farmer working the land he loved and caring for his cherished family.

In his spare moments, Elvin enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He and Jan shared wonderful memories of their trips to Colorado, where they particularly delighted in seeing the mountains.

Elvin was loved by his family and will be missed daily.

Survivors include his wife, Jan of Galva; son Kyle and his wife Jennifer of Galva; and daughter Melanie of Denver, Colorado; brother Leo Schimmer of Storm Lake; sisters: Norma Schemmel of Remsen, Shirley & husband Dewyne Stucynski of Storm Lake; brother-in-law Allan and wife Bev Johnson of Hinton, IA; sister-in-law Janet Schimmer of Storm Lake, IA; and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding Elvin in death were his parents, Leo and Elizabeth Schimmer, his brother Paul, his sister Corrine Johnson, his brother-in-law Robert Schemmel and his sister-in-law Wilma Schimmer.

Larry D. Lickiss

Larry D. Lickiss, age 61, of Storm Lake, passed away Monday, May 26, 2003 at his home in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Thursday, 1:30 pm, May 29, 2003 at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake with the Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Aurelia.

Larry was born on October 9, 1941 in Quimby, Iowa, the son of Murl and Winona Fern (Jackson) Lickiss. He was baptized into his faith in the United Methodist Church.

As a child, Larry lived first in Quimby and then moved to Cherokee, Iowa with his family, where he graduated from Cherokee High School. Following graduation, he received his associate degree in electronics from Iowa State University in Ames in 1963. Larry was employed by Iowa Office Supply in Storm Lake for over 25 years.

Larry served his country with honor as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force at George Air Force Base in California from 1966 through 1970, when he was honorably discharged.

On November 30, 1963, Larry married Charlene Carole Waddell in Aurelia, Iowa, a union which lasted nearly 40 years. Their marriage was blessed with two sons and one daughter.

Larry was a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. He always considered the welfare of his neighbors and to that end, donated over 40 gallons of blood in the past 30 years.

Larry loved fishing and model railroading. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. However, spending time with his family was Larry’s most precious pastime.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene; one daughter Laura Anne and spouse Jon Lane of Lander, WY; two sons, Stephen James Lickiss and fiance Julia Husak of Des Moines, Iowa and Anthony Paul Lickiss of Kansas City, Missouri; one brother, Neil Lickiss and wife, Anna Marie of Cherokee, Iowa; two step-brothers, Chuck Driggs of LeMars and Doug Driggs and wife Diana of Cherokee; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Waddell and Anna Waddell, both of Aurelia; family friend, Lee Dobbs of Kansas City; and several nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his father and mother, Murl and Winona Lickiss; his step-father, Clyde Driggs; one step-sister, Helen Driggs; and one brother-in-law, Robert Waddell.

Robert D. Madsen

Robert D. “Bob” Madsen, age 61, of Storm Lake, long-time realtor and owner of Madsen Music Center, died Thursday, July 17, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Memorial services will be Monday, July 21st at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church with the Reverend David Koehler officiating. Private family burial will be in the Newell Cemetery prior to the memorial service. A memorial fund has been established.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. where the family will be present to greet friends.

Robert Dean Madsen was born April 23, 1942 in Storm Lake, Iowa the son of Andrew and Marie (Hallengren) Madsen. He attended Highview School through the 11th grade and graduated from Rembrandt High School with the class of 1959.

In 1966 he established Madsen Music Center in Storm Lake which he continued to operate until his death. Bob was also a licensed real estate broker and owned and operated A.C.R. Real Estate in Storm Lake.

On November 12, 1971 he was united in marriage to Judy Barker in Rembrandt, Iowa.

Bob was baptized and confirmed at the Rembrandt Presbyterian Church and was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Hy Noon Kiwanis and played the accordion in the Kiwanis Zaur Kraut Band. He held a private pilot’s license and was a CB and Amateur Ham Radio operator.

He is survived by his wife, Judy, Storm Lake, three sons, Dean Madsen, Ankeny, Keith Madsen and Lynn Ebel, Storm Lake and Mark and Jennifer Madsen, Boone, a brother, Kenneth Lee Madsen and his wife, Marthann, Pasadena, TX, a half-brother, Ernest Madsen and his wife, Vivian, Pocahontas, a sister-in-law, Marge Madsen, Rembrandt and numerous other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his half-brother, Glenn Madsen.
