Karen K. Friedlund

Karen K. Friedlund of Storm Lake, Iowa died at her home on Thursday, May 12, 2005 at the age of 61 years and nine months.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 am, Monday, May 16, 2005 at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be 2:00 P.M. in Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove, Iowa under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call Sunday May 15, 2005 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Karen was born August 3, 1943 to Dar and Marian Friedlund in Buena Vista County, Iowa. She lived with her family in Aurelia and attended grade school there before moving to Storm Lake, where she graduated from Storm Lake High School with the Class of 1962.

Karen made her home in Storm Lake and was employed as a Dietary Assistant at Buena Vista Manor for 30 years. She was a faithful member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake.

Karen loved life and treasured her family and the time she spent with them. Her cat, Sparky, was a loyal companion and Karen spent many happy hours spoiling Sparky. Karen also enjoyed visiting with her many friends, working on her picture albums and watching television and movies.

Among those left to cherish her memory are her brother, Dan and wife Ramona Friedlund of Omaha, Nebraska; her nieces, Stacy and husband John Christie of Atlanta, Georgia, and Sarah Friedlund of Chicago, Illinois; her nephew, Chris Edwards of Omaha, Nebraska; her great-nephews and niece, Jack, Kate and Will Christie; close family friend, Velma Peterson; and many other relatives and friends.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Dar and Marian Friedlund.

LaVaughn R. Currie

LaVaughn R. Currie, age 79, of Storm Lake, formerly of Schaller, Iowa, passed away Friday, April 22, 2005 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa following a short illness.

Funeral Services will be Monday, April 25, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva, with Reverend Paul Egger officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Sunday, April 24, 2005 from 3-7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where family present from 5-7:00 p.m.

LaVaughn Ruth (Specketer) Currie, daughter of Clarence and Clara (Otto) Specketer was born September 22, 1925 in Sac County. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Galva, Iowa.

She graduated in 1943 from the Galva High School. After graduation, she worked at an Insurance Office and for the Rationing Board.

On June 1, 1946, she married Roger Currie at St. John Lutheran Church. To this union, three children were born: Scott, Andrea and Mark.

They farmed until 1985, when they moved to Schaller. LaVaughn worked in the office of a seed corn plant and was involved in her church as a Sunday School teacher and as an officer in Ladies Aid. She enjoyed making quilts for World Relief and also served on the Library Board in Schaller.

In 2001, LaVaughn moved to Wel-Life Assistant Living in Alta, Iowa then moved to Otsego Place in Storm Lake in January of 2004.

She is survived by a son Scott, daughter Andrea and her husband Richard Hoskins, and son Mark and wife Mary; one sister Ardis and husband Burdette Grieme; eight grandchildren: Lindy and Andrew Currie-Suntken, Tanner and Lucas Hoskins, Jarid, Kayla, Mike and Nick Currie, and numerous friends and relatives.

LaVaughn was preceded in death by her parents, husband Roger, brothers: Virgil and Garland and two sisters: Leta and June.

Margaret Cook

Margaret Mae Cook, age 89, of Schaller, Iowa died Friday, December 16, 2005 at Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at 11:00 am at the Presbyterian Church in Schaller, with Reverend Marvin Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Schaller Cemetery. A visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Margaret Mae Saathoff was born February 14, 1916 in Storm Lake, Iowa to George and Maude (Dragoo) Saathoff. She was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Margaret attended country school and graduated from high school at Hayes Consolidated School with the Class of 1935.

On June 8, 1938, Margaret was united in marriage to Harold Cook in Sioux City, Iowa. They were blessed with three children: Wayne, Dennis and Mavis.

Margaret was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Schaller, where she also held membership in the church Women’s Circle.

Margaret was a homemaker but she enjoyed working outside on the farm also. She was a loving wife and devoted mother who treasured her family. In her later years, her grandchildren brought her great joy. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons: Wayne (Connie) Cook of Beaufort, South Carolina and Dennis (Ilene) Cook of Schaller; her daughter, Mavis (Tim) Rusk of Sioux City, Iowa; grandchildren: Kevin (Beatriz) Cook of Maumelle, Arkansas, David (Melissa) Cook of Fort Dodge, Iowa, William Cook of Beaufort, South Carolina, Justin Cook and Kayla Rusk, both of Sioux City, Iowa; great-grandchildren: Augusta Cook and Darylinn Cook; one sister, Lucile Christensen of Gilmore City, Iowa; two sisters-in-law: LaVerna Saathoff-Meyer and Mildred Saathoff; and many other relatives and friends.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; and two brothers: Clayton Saathoff and G. Allen Saathoff.

Marjorie G. Lyman

Marjorie Grace Lyman, age 70, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Sunday, July 31, 2005 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, August 4, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, where family will greet friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Marjorie was born June 25, 1935 to Andrew Adolph Adamsen and Hazel Monk in Correctionville, Iowa. Her family moved to the Storm Lake area and Marge graduated from Hayes Consolidated School in 1953.

On November 15, 1953, Marge was united in marriage to Robert Duane Lyman at the Methodist Church in Newell, Iowa. Their union was blessed with six children: Mardel, Mitchel, Mary Lou, Michael, Merlin and Mark. In addition to making a warm and comfortable home for her family, Marge also , for a time, was a restaurant owner until she retired in March of 2000. She was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church.

Marge enjoyed dining out, casino trips and participating in her card club. She loved the companionship she shared with her dear friend Lyle Peters. Above all, Marge loved her family and treasured the time she spent with them. She enjoyed simple times together, the holidays and special events, as well as traveling to visit her family members. Her presence will be dearly missed.

Left to cherish her memory are her treasured companion Lyle Peters of Storm Lake;

her children: Mardel (Bernie) Gutz of Belleville, Illinois, Mitchel (Lauri) Lyman of Newell, Iowa, Mary Lou (Kerry) Herzog of Guttenburg, Iowa, Michael (Joan) Lyman of Chandler, Arizona, Merlin (Mary Beth) Lyman of Shiloh, Illinois and Mark (Diane) Lyman of Cedar Falls, Iowa; grandchildren: Brandon (Heidi) Hout of Waterloo, Iowa, Brenda (Jay) Zietler of Milton, Iowa, Mandy (Brad) Mahler of Newell, Iowa, Anthony Lyman of Mesa, Arizona, Brian Hout, currently stationed in Pusan, South Korea, Shane Lyman of Meadowbrooke, Illinois, Justin (Ginger) Lyman of Norwalk, Iowa, Misty Lyman and Candi Lyman of Mesa, Arizona, Shanda Lyman of Mascoutah, Illinois, Robert Lyman of Phoenix, Arizona, Jeff Bonham of Shiloh, Illinois, Rachel Lyman and Rebecca Lyman of Cedar Falls, Iowa; great-grandchildren: Chloe Lyman, Hailey Lyman, Dakota Pinchera, J.R. Zietler, Carson Zietler, Aden Mahler, Treyton Mahler and Nevaeh Lyman; brothers: Alan (Wanda) Adamsen of Lake Havasu, Arizona, Aaron (Sandie) Adamsen of North Whittier, California, Austin (Cathy) Adamsen of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Arnie (Pat) Adamsen of Las Vegas, Nevada; sisters: Andre Adamsen of Las Vegas, Nevada and Mary Jo (Don) Roggatz of Correctionville, Iowa; and many other family members and a host of friends.

Marge was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Lyman; her mother, Hazel Monk; her father Andrew Adamsen; brother Arlen; and her father-in-law and

mother-in-law, Dean and Helen Lyman.

Richard W. “Dick” Schmitt

Richard W. “Dick” Schmitt, age 77, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died September 7, 2005 at his home.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, September 10, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Burial will be in the E & R Cemetery in rural Schaller. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Friday, September 9, 2005 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., where the family will be present.

Dick was born January 28 1928 on a farm near Alta, Iowa, to Frank L. and Ann Catherine Schmitt. He attended rural country school at Maple Valley Numbers 6 and 7, grade school at Storm Lake St. Mary’s, spent his freshman year at Fairview, and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Storm Lake in 1946. He worked on the family farm for one and one-half years, and during the winters of 1946, 1947 and 1948 on the loading dock of Hygrade (now Tyson Foods). In 1949 and 1950, he worked in construction for Stedwell and Anderson of Storm Lake.

On April 14, 1951, Dick was united in marriage to Kathleen J. Stille. Their marriage was blessed with three daughters: Stephanie, Stacy and Sandra.

In March of 1951, Dick began working for Iowa Public Service Company (now Midwest Energy), as a laborer paid at $1.04 per hour. He worked in Cherokee as a truck driver for three months and then as a serviceman in Storm Lake for five months. He became a service lineman on the city truck, then lineman, crew foreman and finally crew supervisor. He retired in June of 1990.

Dick was a devoted husband and father, and he had a strong sense of community. On January 1, 1961, he began his service on the Storm Lake City Council, which ended 24 years later. He served on the Planning and Zoning Board, and on the Harold Rowley Recycling Center Board as a representative of the city, a position he still held. Dick was a volunteer fireman for 13 years, starting as engineer and retiring in 1963 as Assistant Chief. He was a member of the Kiwanis Beavers. Dick was a faithful member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, serving on various boards, as usher and Elder.

He enjoyed his woodworking shop, repairing and building many items, among them furniture and toys. He will be remembered as one who gave freely of his time and energy for the good of his community. His family will treasure his memory and miss him dearly.

Survivors include his wife of more than 54 years, Kathleen, of Storm Lake; daughters: Dr. Stephanie Schmitt and husband Dr. Olu Sobowale of Lakeland, Florida; Stacy Blee of Waseca, Minnesota; and Sandra Schmitt of Storm Lake. His memory will also be cherished by his granddaughters, Alyssa and Alanna Blee, and Femi Sobowale; as well as two grandsons, Funso and Funmi Sobowale.

He is further survived by his sisters: Veronica (Mrs. Merritt Lutter) of Des Moines, Iowa; Mary Norris of Lacey, Washington; and Dorothy (Mrs. Fran Waldo) of Canyon Lake, Texas; brothers: Donald and wife Betty Schmitt of Storm Lake; James and wife Phyllis Schmitt of Alta; Charles Schmitt of California and Joseph Schmitt of Petaluma, California; sisters-in-law: Ellen (Mrs. Henry) Stille of Decorah, Iowa and Karen (Mrs. Gordon) Johannesen of Alta; brother-in-law Gerald and his wife Carolyn Stille of Schaller, Iowa; as well as many extended family members and a host of friends.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents.

Ardeth Kreft

Ardeth Kreft, age 83, of Newell, Iowa and formerly of Early, Iowa died Sunday, November 19, 2006 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Kreft will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2006 at Faith Lutheran Church in Early. Pastor Chuck Bettin will officiate. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 24, 2006 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Ardeth was born May 30, 1923 in rural Storm Lake, Iowa to Oscar and Rose (Petersen) Willadsen. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell and later confirmed her faith in that same church as a youth. She graduated from high school in Sulphur Springs, Iowa.

On August 6, 1950, Ardeth was united in marriage to Eugene Kreft at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Ardeth was a dedicated and caring teacher to many young students for many years. She loved teaching young people and helping them learn.

A faithful member of Faith Lutheran Church in Early, Ardeth served her Lord gladly with her participation in the Mission Society and on various committees within the church. She was a voracious reader of all types of books and enjoyed listening to sports broadcasts on her radio. Ardeth was a member of the Buena Vista College Choir and loved to take a turn on the dance floor. Her gentle, caring presence will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Evelyn Christensen of McCallsburg, Iowa; sister-in-law Marilyn and her husband Gordon Fett of Storm Lake, Iowa; beloved nephews and nieces; extended family and many friends.

Ardeth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene; and one brother, Leo Willadsen.

Dean R. Layman

Dean R. Layman, age 88, of Newell, Iowa died Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral Service will be Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Newell United Methodist Church, with flag presentation by the Newell American Legion Post # 193 at the church. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery at a later date. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 17, 2006 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Masonic Service will be held during visitation at the funeral home.

Dean Richard Layman was born August 15, 1918 to Denton and Jess (Muirhead) Layman in San Antonio, Texas. After attending school through the eleventh grade, Dean entered the United States Army on July 6, 1937. He was trained in cooking and bakery services while in the Army. He served during World War II before he received his honorable discharge.

On October 7, 1943, Dean was united in marriage to Helen Kellander. The couple was blessed with two children: Rick and Vicki.

Dean worked as a meat cutter at the Hygrade plant in Storm Lake for 33 years. He was a member of the Newell Methodist Church and served his community as a volunteer in the Newell Fire Department for 16 years. Dean was a Royal Arch Mason and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed golfing and fishing and particularly liked to go trout fishing near Strawberry Point in Iowa. He also collected ducks.

Dean’s family always came first and he treasured the time he could spend visiting with his family and friends.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 62 years, Helen of Newell; his son, Reverend Rick Layman of Shell Rock, Iowa; his daughter, Vicki Medici of Newell; grandchildren: Troy Medici of Newell, Heather Layman and Jennifer Layman of Cincinnati, Ohio; great-granddaughter Micaiah; sister-in-law Irene Mobley of Hampton, Virginia; extended family and many friends.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Denton and Jess Layman; and his brother, Scott Layman.

Karolyn Halverson

Karolyn Halverson, age 58, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, September 23, 2006 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Halverson are scheduled for Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, with Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 from 4-8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6-8:00 p.m.

Karolyn Kristen Nehring was born September 19, 1948 at Storm Lake, Iowa to Wendolin and Evelyn (Sievers) Nehring. She received her education in the Albert City school system.

On October 2, 1971, Karolyn was united in marriage to Wayne Halverson. The couple was blessed with four children: Brent, Shelly, Brian and Troy.

Karolyn was a loving wife and devoted mother whose family always came first in her life. As grandchildren came along, she found them to be a new light in her life. Any time she could spend with her family was precious to Karolyn. She was a race fan and enjoyed attending races whenever she could. Karolyn also loved to travel and see new and interesting places.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Wayne, of Storm Lake. He and Karolyn would have celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on October 2nd this year. She is further survived by her son Brent (Lori) Halverson of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; her daughter Shelly (Bill Chapman) Woodard of Storm Lake; son Brian Halverson of Overland Park, Kansas; son Troy (Cinda) Halverson of Spencer, Iowa; her beloved grandchildren: Austin, Emily, Jessica, Nick, Matt, Amber, Courtney, Paige, Alex, Calvin and Allie; her precious great-grandchild, Dominik; brother Richard (Rosalie) Nehring of Des Moines, Iowa; brother Bob (Sara) Nehring of Atlantic, Iowa; brother Gailyn (Billie) Nehring of Alta, Iowa; brother Mark (Lori) Nehring of Alta, Iowa; sister Shirley (Gary) Williams of Manson, Iowa; sister Cindy (Rick) Hatch of Early, Iowa; sister Shari McCaulley of Manson, Iowa; extended family and a host of friends.

Karolyn was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Garland Nehring; her father- and mother-in-law, Arthur and Helen Halverson; her brother-in-law, John McCaulley and her sister-in-law Diane Nehring.
