Marilyn Warriner

Marilyn Warriner, 72, of Schaller, passed away Monday, May 5, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Services for Mrs. Warriner will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Schaller Methodist Church in Schaller. Reverend Terry Pollard will officiate. Burial will follow in Schaller Cemetery, under the direction of Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, May 7, 2008 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will be present from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Marilyn Joan Miller was born October 1, 1935 in Sac City, Iowa, the daughter of Bert and Gwendolyn (Skinner) Miller. Marilyn was baptized in the Baptist Church in Sac City. She grew up in and around Sac City, except for her first grade year, when she was in Des Moines, Iowa. She returned to the Sac City area and attended Jackson No. 6 Country School and graduated from Sac Community High School May 28, 1953. Marilyn was employed by the Polar Ice Cream Shop from September 1952 until May of 1955. She was later employed at Deit’s and Sparky’s in Schaller.

Marilyn was united in marriage to Harold Warriner on May 22, 1955 at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. The couple resided on a farm two miles from Schaller. Harold and Marilyn were blessed with two children: Linda and Duane.

In 1963, Marilyn became a member of Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in rural Schaller, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and held membership in Women’s Fellowship. After that church closed, Marilyn joined the Schaller United Methodist Church in 2006.

Marilyn was a friend to all, and always had a smile to share. She loved to garden and enjoyed playing cards. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, her family was always first in her heart. She treasured the times she spent with her family, and especially enjoyed their special family gatherings and holidays. Her kind and caring ways will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Linda Westeen, and special friend, Randy Collum, both of Grinnell, Iowa; her son, Duane Warriner of Schaller; three grandchildren: Michael (Rhonda) Westeen of Slayton, Minnesota; Steven Westeen of Grinnell, Iowa; and Kimmy (Jake) Hoffman of Dunkerton, Iowa; three great-grandchildren: Evan Westeen, Ethan Westeen and Lynzi Joe Hoffman; extended family and a host of friends.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved husband, Harold, in 2003.

Carol McCoy

Carol McCoy, age 69, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, November 3, 2008 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services for Mrs. McCoy will be held on Friday, November 7, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, with Pastor Steven Schulz officiating. Interment will be in Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Thursday, November 6th, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home, 1615 West Milwaukee in Storm Lake, where the family will be present for the entire visitation.

Carol Joann Radke was born in Alta, Iowa on May 14, 1939, the daughter of Erwin and Alice (Holtz) Radke. She was baptized on June 4, 1939 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Hanover (rural Alta) and in 1953 affirmed her faith when she was confirmed in the same church.

Carol received her education from kindergarten through fourth grade in the Aurelia, Iowa school system. She attended grades five through eight at St. John’s School at Hanover. Carol graduated from Alta High School in 1957.

Following graduation, Carol worked as a secretary at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, and then was a secretary at the Alta School District, where she met a new teacher and coach named Delbert McCoy. Del and Carol were united in marriage on July 23, 1961 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hanover. The couple was blessed with three children: Valerie, Vanessa and David.

Del and Carol subsequently moved their family to Storm Lake, where Del started a new job teaching and coaching at Storm Lake High School. They spent many happy years together raising their family and attending the numerous school events in which their children participated, as well as the sports events Del coached. Del passed away June 7, 2008. He and Carol would have been married 47 years last July.

A loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, Carol led a full and happy life. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, where she was involved in various activities, including Altar Guild and Ladies Aid. She was also a member of Buena Vista Regional Hospital Auxiliary. Along with raising her family, Carol worked part time as a secretary at Josten’s, The Women’s Shop, and the Storm Lake Middle School. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and needlework and often made special gifts for her family. In 2005, Carol and Del took great pleasure from a trip they took together to Europe.

Carol’s family was always her priority. She treasured every moment she spent with her children, and in later years her grandchildren found a special place in her heart. Carol’s gentle and caring presence will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Valerie Rosenthal and Vanessa (Jeff) Stewart, both of Alta; son David (Kimberlynn) McCoy of O’Fallon, Missouri; grandchildren: Jacob (Amy) Stewart of Alta; Benjamin Rosenthal and Jackson Rosenthal of Alta; Logan McCoy, Preston McCoy and Maddux McCoy of O’Fallon; brothers: Gordon (Doris) Radke of Warden, Montana and Robert (Sally) Radke of Boone, Iowa; sister Marilyn (Arlin) Hinkeldey of Cherokee, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Lucille (Frank) Rose of Spencer, Iowa; Colleen (Roger) Olson of Wood Lake, Minnesota; Judith (Andy) Van Dorpe of Fargo, North Dakota; and Dorothy McCoy of Clarkfield, Minnesota; extended family and a host of friends.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Erwin and Alice Radke; her husband, Delbert McCoy; her parents-in-law, Orph and Era McCoy; her brothers-in-law: Kenny McCoy, Dale McCoy, Leland McCoy and Duane McCoy; and her sister-in-law, Marie Cushman.

Donald D. Galbraith

Donald D. “Shorty” Galbraith, age 80, of Newell, Iowa, died on Saturday, November 29, 2008 in rural Newell, the result of a pickup accident.

Funeral services for Mr. Galbraith will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery with full military rites by American Legion Post 193. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 2nd, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00.

A memorial fun in Shorty’s memory has been established.

Donald Dean “Shorty” Galbraith was born May 24, 1928 on a farm east of Sac City, Iowa, to Julian and Alice (Mooney) Galbraith. He was baptized and confirmed at “The Galbraith Church” south of Newell and graduated in May of 1945 from Newel High School.

Shorty entered the service in 1949 and served at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, Fort Sill, Oregon, Camp Otterberry, Indiana, and Fort Hood, Texas. He was honorably discharged in 1951.

Don and June Barnes were united in marriage on June 18, 1953. Three children were born to this union: Gerri Dee, Richard Shannon and Alicia Lee. Several years later they divorced.

Shorty farmed for several years south of Newell before moving to Lake City in 1957, where he worked as a Moorman Feed salesperson for many years. While there, he was a member of the Lake City Legion, was on a softball team, and served on the Lake City Fire Department for 20 years. He also clerked at the Lake City Sale Barn, even after moving back to Newell in 1977.

After he moved back to Newell, Shorty continued farming on his parents’ farm. He held various offices at the United Methodist Church, was a faithful Lions’ Club member for over 20 years, and he was a good member of the American Legion Post 193. He was always a willing worker when asked to donate his time. Shorty and Donna enjoyed their Euchre card club group. Shorty was a sports enthusiast and was an Iowa Hawkeye fan, but his greatest joy was following all the Newell-Fonda sports and sharing the teams’ happy moments with their many “wins.”

Survivors include his three children: Gerri and husband Norbert of Honolulu, Hawaii; Richard and wife Donna of Wells, Nevada and their son, Mark, and his wife, Kelley; and Alicia of Scottsdale, Arizona; several grandchildren; his brother, Lloyd (Jeanette) Galbraith of Newell; two nieces and two nephews: Terry, Theresa, Toni and Tom, and their families; cousins and many friends. Also surviving Shorty is his special friend, Donna, and her family: Kim and Mary Beth of Elgin, Illinois; Terri and Doug, Stephanie, Amy and Michael of Blair, Nebraska; and Duane and Cindy, Cole and Morgan of Newell.

Don was preceded in death by his mother, Alice, in January 1997, and by his father, Julian, in December 1998.

Dorthea Newell

Dorthea M. Newell, age 96, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Thursday, November 6, 2008 at the Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral services for Mrs. Newell will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 14, 2008 at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home Storm Lake, with Pastor Kevin Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Thursday, November 13th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home, 1615 West Milwaukee in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00.

Dorthea Marie Huebner was born on June 26, 1912 in Good Thunder, Minnesota to Paul and Petra (Andreason) Huebner. She attended country school near Good Thunder, Minnesota.

On December 23, 1935, Dorthea was united in marriage to Glenn Newell in Sac City, Iowa. This union was blessed with three children: Lucille, LeAnna and Lester.

Dorthea was an active member of the Church of Christ in Storm Lake and the Rebekah Lodge. She was a very talented lady who held numerous jobs outside the home. One of these was painting photographs for Buntrock-Salie Studio. She also worked at Julius Cleaners for a time. She did wallpapering for people, and also sewed and altered clothing. Dorthea cared for children in her home. She enjoyed making crafts of all kinds. Dorthea loved and adored her family and cherished special memories of traveling with Glenn.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Lucille Barber of Storm Lake; LeAnna Weeks and her husband, David of Newberry Springs, California; Lester Newell and his wife, Brenda of Storm Lake; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Evelyn Sternitzke of Good Thunder, Minnesota; Luella Reimen of Geneva, Minnesota; and Esther Kunz of Mankato, Minnesota; three sisters-in law: Violet LaFever of Storm Lake; Lois Bruns of Alta, Iowa; and Emma Hanson of Sioux City, Iowa; extended family and a host of friends.

Dorthea was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glenn; her grandson, Larry Weeks; her son-in-law, Jack Barber; and two brothers: George Huebner and Paul Huebner, Jr.

Dorothy E. Wilson

Dorothy E. Wilson, age 96, of Schaller, Iowa, died Monday, November 10, 2008 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Services for Mrs. Wilson will be held Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Schaller, with Reverend Terry Pollard officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Estelle Anderson was born January 2, 1912 in rural Buena Vista County, Iowa, the daughter of Charles A. and Anna (Hammer) Anderson. As a young woman she met and married Arthur Wilson on January 11, 1929 in Storm Lake. The couple was blessed with six daughters.

Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women’s Circle. She loved to sew and enjoyed going to arts and crafts clubs. Dorothy loved her family deeply and treasured the time she was able to spend with them.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Doreen and husband Gene Kestel of Storm Lake; Marjorie and husband Douglas Hussey of Ida Grove, Iowa; Glenice and husband George Koth of Marcus, Iowa; Joan Vrana of Sac City, Iowa; and Cheryl Haack of Schaller; grandchildren: Cynthia Waller, Kevin Kestel, Elaine Kennedy, Laurel Walsh, Cetha Henrich, Barry Filer, Diane Filer, Pamela Franco, James Hussey, Angie Konradi, Tom Koth, Dan Koth, David Koth, Bonnie Rahn, Debra Strait, Judy Peck, Susan Burger, Marie Kirsch, Tina Frank, Natalie Ehrp, Chad Ehrp, Donelle Pyle, Stephanie Al Tamimi and Lacey Pyle; 39 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren; extended family and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Bonnye Filer; her brother, George Anderson; her sisters, Nora Nelson and Ruth Ryden; and her sons-in-law, Don Pyle and Duane Haack; grandchildren: Charmaine Hussey, Fred Hussey, John Vrana, Terri Koth Carver; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Ernest Porath

Ernest “Ernie” Porath, age 83, of Newell, Iowa, died on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Funeral services for Mr. Porath will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery with full military rites by American Legion Post 193. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

A time of visitation will be held at the church from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 20th, before service time.

Memorials in Ernie’s honor may be directed to St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell.

Ernest Fredrick Porath was born December 31, 1924 in Newell, Iowa, the son of Edward and Anna (Degner) Porath. Ernie was baptized at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell as an infant and later confirmed his faith as a youth at the same church. He was raised in the Newell community, where he received his education and graduated from Newell High School.

Following high school, on July 28, 1944, Ernie joined the United States Army and was stationed in the Philippine Islands with the 43rd Infantry Division during World War II. He was awarded the Good Conduct Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Service Star, Combat Inf Badge, APTC Ribbon with 1 Bronze Service Star, World War II Victory Ribbon, before he was honorably discharged on December 15, 1945.

On February 10, 1948, Ernie was united in marriage to Bonnie June Byers in Sac City, Iowa. The couple was blessed with four children: Linda, Larry, Randy and Arnie. Ernie and Bonnie June raised their family on the farm in rural Newell. Bonnie June passed away on August 23, 1995. On November 25, 2007, Ernie was married to Coral Byers.

Ernie loved the land and he loved farming. In 2008, he retired from farming. He was also a rural letter carrier for 25 years and enjoyed the contact he had with those people on his daily route.

A lifelong member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell, Ernie served his Lord to the best of his abilities and in a number of ways. He held the offices of Treasurer, Elder and Trustee in the church over the years. He was also a 4-H and a Boy Scout volunteer. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his friends. His family was always his first priority in life and he treasured the time he spent with them. Ernie, in return, was dearly loved and will be deeply missed.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Coral, of Newell; daughter Linda Porath-Kelley of Ames, Iowa; son Larry (Karen) Porath of Emmetsburg, Iowa; son Arnie (Colleen) Porath of Ankeny, Iowa; ; bonus children: John Byers, Jean Miller and Carol Byers; grandchildren: Denise (Kelley) Suggs; Trevor Porath, Ryan Porath, Amanda Porath, Amy Porath, Matthew Porath, Adam Porath, and Anita (Porath) Krause; bonus grandchildren: Terri Kansler, B.J. Miller, Annie Miller, Lila Miller, Christopher Byers and Kelsey Byers; great-grandchildren: Garrett Suggs, Kelley Suggs, Ally Porath, Camden Porath, Grace Ann Porath, Cameron Porath, Alexander Porath and Caleb Porath; bonus great-grandchildren: Devin Kansler, Emily Kansler, Mikey Hosford, Lillian Steinocher, Hailey Steinocher and Mackenzie Fassett; sisters: Naomi Benna of Storm Lake, Iowa and Hazel (Robert) Messer of Cedar Falls, Iowa; extended family and many friends.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Anna Porath; his first wife, Bonnie June Porath; his son, Randy Porath; and his brother, Raymond Porath.

Edward Witte

Edward “Ed” Witte, age 92, of Holstein, Iowa and formerly of Schaller, Iowa went home to be with his Lord and Savior on November 30, 2008 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa, the result of complications from a stroke.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller. Interment will follow in the Schaller Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 2nd, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will be present from 5:00 to 8:00.

Edward Witte was born February 19, 1916 in Ida County Iowa, one of twelve children born to Henry and Magdalena (Wunschel) Witte. He attended country school in the Ida Grove, Iowa area through eighth grade.

Ed served his country in World War II, beginning in 1942. He was stationed in New Guinea, Australia and the Philippines.

On February 18, 1951, Ed was united in marriage to Mary Jane Thomson in Ida Grove. They were blessed with two children: a daughter, Deb, and a son, Scott. The couple lived on an acreage near Schaller for many years. Mary Jane died July 21, 1999.

Ed was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller since 1948. He worked for Sac County for many years, retiring in 1981. In April of 2000, Ed moved to the Schaller Community Apartments. In August of this year, Ed became a resident of Char-Mac Assisted Living Community in Holstein.

Ed enjoyed time with his family, drinking coffee with friends, and watching sports, especially the Hawkeyes, Cyclones, and the Atlanta Braves.

Ed is survived by his daughter, Deb (Denis) Thompson of Webster City, Iowa; his son, Scott (LaVonne) Witte of Rock Valley, Iowa; five grandchildren: Hope (Nathan) Ribbey and their children, Hannah, Amos and Kaela, all of Webster City; Micah Thompson of Webster City; and Seth, Sara and Erica Witte, all of Rock Valley; three brothers and their wives: Don (Wilma) Witte of Bentonville, Arkansas; Emmett (Laura) Witte of Schaller; and George (Janice) Witte of Schaller; two sisters: Esther Patterson of Britton, South Dakota and Irene Carstensen of Alta, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; as well as many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Jane; infant twin children, Dean and Jean; his granddaughter, Hannah Thompson; his sister, Hattie Teghtmeyer; and his brothers: Roy, Clarence, Robert, Lee, and Burdette.

Lawrence “Larry” Dugan

Long-time Storm Lake attorney, Lawrence “Larry” Dugan, age 68, of Alta, Iowa died on Friday, November 14, 2008 at his residence.

Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the church Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be from 3-8:00 pm, Monday, November 17, 2008 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present the entire time to greet friends. There will be a parish vigil service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a KC rosary.

Lawrence Edward Dugan was born on August 5, 1940 to Edward F. and Dorothy M. (Zimmer) Dugan in Davenport, Iowa. He attended grade school at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Davenport, graduating high school from St. Ambrose Academy. Following his graduation, Larry attended St. Ambrose University where he received his bachelor’s degree. Later, Larry enrolled in law school at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and graduated in 1972. Additionally, he was a member of the United States Navy Reserves.

A life-long Catholic, Larry was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Davenport. He was a member of St. Mary’s Parish in Storm Lake, a member of the Knights of Columbus and served on the St. Mary’s Finance and BINGO Committees.

On January 13, 1968, Larry was united in marriage to Mary M. Robinson in Chicago, Illinois. This union was blessed with five children: Kimberly, Jennifer, Brian, Kate and Benjamin.

Larry was an active community member, involved with the Elks Lodge and Lake Creek Country Club. He loved golfing and any spectator sports. Over the years, Larry served his community in the legal capacity as an attorney and advisor. He gained many clients and friends, for whom he worked with and for until his sudden illness.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Kimberly Grussing and her husband, Richard of Rushmore, Minnesota; Jennifer Roth and her husband, Brian of Eagan, Minnesota; Brian Dugan and his wife, Hollie of West Des Moines, Iowa; Kate Glode and her husband, Mike of Apple Valley, Minnesota; Benjamin Dugan and his wife, Meghan of Apple Valley, Minnesota; grandchildren: Bailey, Brooke and Autumn Grussing, Alex and Mary Roth, Madison and Paige Dugan, Stella and Abbigayle Glode, Jackson, Alison and Finnian Dugan; sister-in-law, Judy Dugan of Bettendorf, Iowa; extended family and a host of friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; and one brother, Donald Dugan.
