Mabel Grieme

Mabel Grieme, age 86, of Schaller, died March 25, 2003 at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 28th at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller with Reverend David Hagen officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 27th from 4-8 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller with the family present to greet friends from 6-8 p.m.

Mabel F. Young was born May 11, 1916 on a farm near Galva, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Bennett) Young. She attended school in Galva, graduating from Galva High School on May 22, 1935. Following graduation, Mabel attended the Business School of Sioux City.

On March 23, 1939 Mabel was united in marriage to Erwin Grieme at the St. John Parsonage in Alta, Iowa. To this union, four children were born, Ronald, Larry, Richard and Mayrean.

Mabel was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller. She was an active Ladies Aid member and held many offices. She also taught Sunday School for many years and was secretary for AAL for a number of years. Mabel was baptized June 13, 1920 at the Methodist Church in Galva and confirmed April 5, 1940 at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva.

Mabel worked at the ASCS offices in Ida Grove and Cherokee. Then she did secretarial work in Des Moines until she was married and became a farmwife. Mabel enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, doing yard work, sewing and crafts. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and raising a variety of chickens, peacocks, pheasants, and guineas. Her family has fond memories of Mabel chasing chickens out of her strawberry patch, trapping pocket gophers with the grandkids, and raising baby raccoons.

Survivors include her three sons: Ronald Grieme and wife Karen of Schaller, Larry Grieme and wife Susan of Schaller, and Richard Grieme of Adel, Iowa; daughter Mayrean McDonough and husband Dean of Marble Falls, Texas; grandchildren: Kathryn Johnson and husband Kent of Akron, Kevin Grieme and wife Brenda of Lawton, Deborah Ayers and husband Kelvin of Parker, Colorado, Jodi Engstrom and husband Chris of Phoenix, Arizona, Kent Grieme and wife Sherrie of Schaller, Evan Grieme of Ames, Cindy Struchen and husband Mike of Marble Falls, Texas, Marcia Bible and husband Gavin of Marble Falls, Texas, Carla Schnitz and husband Chad of Marble Falls, Texas, Amanda Grieme of Des Moines, and Ashlee Grieme of Adel; seventeen great grandchildren; brother, James Young and wife Carolyn of Galva; sister, Esther Kessler and husband Hubert of Galva; sister-in-law Birdella Brostad and husband Robert of Galva; and other extended family members and friends.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Young; her husband, Erwin Grieme; brother, Raymond Young; nephew, Bob Young; and great granddaughter, Kelli Johnson.

Phyllis Potter

Phyllis Potter, age 79, of Storm Lake died on August 27, 2003 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Friends may call at the church two hours prior to the service on Saturday.

Phyllis Irene Tymeson was born on August 14, 1924 to Ariel and Gail (Crowley) Tymeson in Storm Lake, Iowa. She was baptized in the Presbyterian faith.

Phyllis spent her childhood living with her parents and brother Dick in Storm Lake, where she completed her elementary and high school education. After her high school graduation in 1942, Phyllis went to Buena Vista College in Storm Lake for a year and then enrolled at Union Pacific School. She then was employed as a secretary for the Union Pacific Railroad in Salt Lake City, Utah.

On November 29, 1945 Phyllis was united in marriage with Robert J. Potter in San Francisco, California. Two children blessed this union, a son Page and a daughter Stacey.

Phyllis was a loving wife and devoted mother who put her family’s well-being first in her life. She kept special memories of Page’s and Stacey’s weddings close to her heart over the years.

An enthusiastic sports fan who enjoyed high school and professional basketball and baseball, Phyllis liked to recall her trips to watch the Twins play. She loved to fish and remembered fondly when she began salmon fishing. Other cherished memories were the days she and Robert spent building their first house in Ames by hand, the mornings she arose early to watch the sun come up, and the days she would feed wild ducks and geese from the lake in her own backyard.

Phyllis Potter is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert Potter of Storm Lake, her son, Dr. Page Potter and his wife, Beth, of Bowlus, MN and her daughter Stacey and husband Doug Terrill of Spirit Lake, Iowa; her grandchildren Spring Terrill of Milford, Iowa and John Sullivan of Milford; her great-granddaughter, Sierra Terrill of Milford, Iowa; her brother Dick and wife Kitty Tymeson of Florida; and her two sisters-in-law Pat Obye and Maxine Stewart.

Preceding Mrs. Potter in death were her parents, Ariel and Gail Tymeson.

Robert E. Peterson

Robert E. Peterson, age 41, of Storm Lake, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at his residence following a sudden illness.

Graveside services are pending and burial will be in the Scandinavian Cemetery, rural Alta.

The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Eldon Peterson was born April 11, 1962 in Fort Worth, Texas the son of Floyd Henry and Darlene Joyce (Sundberg) Peterson. He graduated from high school in Fort Worth in 1981.

He was employed by a furniture company in Fort Worth until moving to Storm Lake in early 2003.

He was baptized and confirmed as a member of the Episcopalian faith in Fort Worth.

He is survived by his mother, Darlene Peterson, Storm Lake, a brother, John M. Peterson, Fort Worth, TX, a half-brother, Gary Peterson and his wife, Jannie, Duluth, MN, two nephews, one niece, aunts, uncles and numerous other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents, John and Lucille Sundberg and Henry and Mary Peterson and by two special uncles, Robert and Eldon Sundberg.

Velma Boyd

Velma Lucille Boyd, age 92, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa, where she had been a resident for four years. Funeral services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Newell on Thursday, July 17, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Scott Holmes officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call on Wednesday, July 16th between 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, where the family will be present.

Velma Lucille Steen was born July 10, 1911, in Havelock, Iowa to Arthur F. and Nellie Steen. After attending schools in Havelock, Atlantic and Sac City, she married Frank Boyd on April 30, 1927. In 1945, the Boyds settled in Newell, where they owned and operated the Kozy Korner Kafe.

Velma served on the board of the Newell Public Library, was a member of the Newell Golf Course, United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women; and belonged to the Bid ’n Chat and Mrs. 500 card clubs.

Besides playing cards and golfing, Velma enjoyed dancing, reading and doing crossword puzzles. She also spent many hours volunteering at the Good Samaritan Center before retiring in 1991.

Velma is survived by her daughters, Jeannette and husband Lloyd Galbraith of Newell and Donna and husband Dennis Henrich of Cherokee, son Steen Boyd and wife Elayne of Storm Lake, daughter-in-law Agnes Boyd of Storm Lake, 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews whom she made happy, even when skies were grey.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frank “Biz” Boyd, and her son Frank Boyd, Jr.

Walter Lyle “Butch” Mileham Jr.

Walter Lyle “Butch” Mileham, Jr., age 51, of the Corona, California area, formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa died at his home on Sunday, December 7, 2003.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, December 20, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the Storm Lake AMVets Post 66. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. A memorial service will be held at a later date in California.

Friends may call beginning one hour prior to the time of service at the church.

Walter Lyle Mileham, Jr. was born on July 5, 1952 in Storm Lake, Iowa to Walter Lyle and Helen (Johnson) Mileham, Sr. He spent his childhood in his parents’ home, living in Newell and Storm Lake. Butch was baptized in April of 1953 at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake and was confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Newell in April of 1965. He attended elementary school in Newell through the 8th grade and then was enrolled at Storm Lake Community School, where he spent his high school years.

Butch served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged in 1977. On November 27, 1971, he was married to Jane Stull. They were blessed with two daughters, Jennifer and Christine.

Butch was employed in the construction field and served as a foreman with his firm. In his spare time, Butch liked to throw darts, play pool, ride motorcycles and spend time with his friends.

He valued his family above everything and took great pleasure in family camping and fishing trips. Butch loved to be called “Papa” by his granddaughters. He was a loving father and grandfather who will be missed every day.

Survivors include his parents, Walter and Helen Mileham, Sr. of Storm Lake; his daughters Jennifer and husband Alban Péna of Riverside, CA, and Christine and husband Robert Madden, Jr. of Storm Lake, IA; grandchildren: Felicia Madden, Devon Madden, Jessica Péna and Rebecca Péna; brother: Gary and wife Marlys Mileham of Sylvania, OH; sisters: Lana and husband Bill Crilly of Essex, IA, Sharon and husband Bob King of Des Moines, IA, and Susan Ericksen of Norfolk, NE.

Duane Haack

Duane Glen Haack, age 63, of Schaller, Iowa, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2004 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 29, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Early. Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller on Wednesday, April 28, 2004 after 4:00 p.m., where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Duane was born August 13, 1940 in Storm Lake, Iowa to Herman and Eldora (Hazel) Haack. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature. After which, he went to serve his country as a commissioned officer in the U. S. Army. Duane had a distinguished career spanning over 20 years, which included completing a master’s degree in English at the University of Wisconsin—Madison in order to teach at West Point. He served in Korea and had two tours of duty in Europe. Upon retirement in 1987, Lt. Colonel Haack returned home to Iowa in 1987. He continued his passion for education by becoming an assistant professor at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. For over a decade he challenged and inspired his students.

On February 15, 1992, Duane was married to Cheryl Pyle at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, Iowa. In 1994, Cheryl opened Cherri’s Antiques in Schaller. This new venture consumed his time. With great detail, he enjoyed speaking of their acquired merchandise.

Duane was an avid reader, focusing on philosophical texts, western and fantasy novels. He loved music and his toes even tapped in his sleep. He whistled like a bird’s song, and sang in a resounding baritone. His serious intellectual side was balanced with a quick wit and joking manner.

A loving husband and devoted father and grandfather, Duane cherished his family.

Duane is survived by his wife of 12 blessed years; his two daughters: Kimberly Beeby and her husband, Daniel of Pensacola, FL and Djana Trofimoff and her husband, Alex, of Kansas City, MO; five grandchildren: Shannon Beeby, Rebecca Beeby, Christine Beeby, Anna Trofimoff, and Nikolas Trofimoff; and his sisters: Darlene Garrels of Wall Lake and Dianna Waldstein and her husband, Scott, of Early.

Also beloved by him and mourning his loss are Cheryl’s six children: Christina Frank of Schaller, Natalie Ehrp of Ankeny, Chad Ehrp of Schaller, Donelle Pyle of Savannah, GA, Stephanie Al-Tamimi and her husband, Kyle, of McCook Lake, SD, and Lacey Pyle of Indianola; seven grandchildren: Kay Lynn Frank, Laura Frank, Nathan Frank, Taya Hinkeldey, Miranda Morrow, Mindy Ehrp and Austin Ehrp; many nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and very special friends.

Preceding Duane in death were his parents, and his brother and wife, Donald and Donna Haack, and his brother-in-law, Lennis Garrels.

Duane touched many lives and will be greatly missed.

Karl E. Sweet

Karl Sweet, age 98, of Storm Lake, Iowa passed away Monday, November 29, 2004 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral Service will be Friday, December 3, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. The family would like to invite everyone for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the church before the funeral service on Friday. Burial will be in the B.V. Memorial Park Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2004 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where family will greet friends from 6-8:00 p.m.

Karl Edwin Sweet, son of Albert and Anna Heschke Sweet, was born on February 5, 1906 on the home farm in rural Storm Lake, Iowa. He attended grade school at the Lincoln Township country school and graduated from Truesdale Consolidated School in 1924. In high school he participated in sports and played the trumpet. At the age of seventeen he began farming with his mother after the passing of his dad.

Karl married Maesel Anderson on September 16, 1931 at the Methodist Parsonage in Rembrandt, Iowa. They were blessed with a daughter, Darlene. Karl and Maesel lived on the home farm for most of the 72 years of their marriage.

During his farming years he sold TVB oil and Mellow Dent seed corn. He also did custom corn shelling and hay baling for neighbors. Karl raised livestock for many years and especially enjoyed his feeder cattle.
Karl was an active member of the Truesdale United Methodist Church, serving as church treasurer for many years. Following the closing of the Truesdale church, he joined the Storm Lake United Methodist Church.

Karl was a 50-year member of the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple in Sioux City, Iowa, served on the Truesdale Elevator Board, Truesdale Consolidated School Board and was also a member of the Truesdale Farmers’ Club for many years.

Karl retired in1993 after 70 active years of farming. His interest then turned to gardening—relishing in giving his garden produce away and in canning and freezing with Maesel. Karl and Maesel enjoyed going for many rides and eating out at the surrounding restaurants. They enjoyed many winters in their home in Arizona. Karl had his garden and enjoyed his fruit trees there, too.

Preceding Karl in death were his parents, Albert and Anna Sweet; his wife Maesel on February 13, 2004; a sister, Lila Spencer, and a brother, George Sweet.

He is survived by his daughter Darlene and husband Ron Cradit of Mound, Minnesota; sisters-in-law Edith Sweet of Yuma, Arizona and Ruth Johnson of Iowa City, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Karl will always be remembered as a caring husband, a loving father, a loyal brother, a special uncle and a very dear friend.

Merlyn Darling

Merlyn Darling, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Friday, October 15, 2004 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, October 19, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Beverlee Bell officiating. Burial will be in the Fonda Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Monday, October 18, 2004 from 4-8:00 pm with family present from 6-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Friends who wish to send condolences may do so online.

Merlyn Charles Darling was born July 6, 1915 at Sac City to Charles H. and Elsie (Larimer) Darling. He received his education in Newell and graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1932.

He worked on the farm and in 1940, he and Edna Carlson were united in marriage in the Presbyterian Church in Fonda. Two children, Don and Dee Anne joined the family. Merlyn and Edna would go on to spend 64 years of marriage together. They moved to Pomeroy in 1941, where Merlyn worked for the Standard Oil Company as a tank wagon salesman.

In 1942, Merlyn and Edna went to San Diego, California where both worked for Consolidated Aircraft building B-24 Liberator bombers for the war effort. After two and a half years, they returned to Fonda where Merlyn was again in the tank wagon business for Farm Service Co. and Mobil Oil Co. He loved to sell!

Merlyn retired in 1975 because of back problems.

His church came first. Merlyn and Edna were active members of the Church of Christ in Fonda. They moved to Storm Lake in October of 1975, and joined the Storm Lake United Methodist Church.

Merlyn loved to play cards, talk, laugh, travel, listen to music and watch the Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed life as long as he could and his good natured manner will be missed. He will be at peace.

Survivors include his wife, Edna; daughter, Dee Anne Van Horn; son, Don (Linda) Darling; grandchildren: Tracey (Troy) and Taylor McCombs, Chad and Kailee Van Horn, Jason (Nicole) and Easton Darling, Matt (Mindy) Darling; sister, Evelyn Henrich and brother, Loren Darling and their families. Merlyn will be missed by other nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Max (Betty) Darling and Kirby (Mary) Darling.
