Oren Pollard

Oren Pollard, age 82, of Schaller, Iowa passed away Sunday, May 23, 2004 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 29, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the Schaller United Methodist Church, with Reverend Carol Gailey officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery. Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller Friday, May 28, 2004 after 4:00 p.m., where the family will be present from 6:00—8:00 p.m. Friends and family wishing to send condolences may do so online.

Oren R. Pollard was born October 17, 1921 to Oren M. and Gertrude (White) Pollard of Nehawka, Nebraska. He was confirmed in the Methodist Church and graduated from Nehawka High School in 1938. After graduation, he attended the Lincoln School of Commerce, then returned to join the family farming operation.

In September of 1945, he was married to Kathleen Nolte of Plattsmouth, Nebraska. They always wanted to own their own farm, and in 1947, while visiting relatives near Schaller, they found and later purchased a farm south of Schaller. They moved there in February of 1948, bringing with them their one-year-old daughter, Kathie. While living on the farm they had two additional girls, Barbara and Robin. The couple lived on this farm their entire lives.

Oren farmed until his retirement several years ago. He and Kathleen were busy year-round with crops and all types of livestock. He prided himself in the diversity and high quality of the livestock operation. He enjoyed competing in livestock shows in Iowa and many surrounding states. Oren and Kathleen were 4-H leaders for many years. Oren was also a Pioneer seed salesman.

Oren enjoyed memberships in agricultural organizations, social groups, the Methodist Church and was always active in the sports activities of his children and grandchildren. He also made time to take the family on summer vacations or travel to exotic locations with friends. He enjoyed making new friends through golfing and bowling.

Oren is survived by Kathleen, his wife of 57 years; his daughters: Kathie (James) Mailander of Wiota, Iowa, Barbara (James) Watson of Schaller, Iowa and Robin (Richard) Boyle of Olympia, WA; seven grandchildren: Chris (Elizabeth) Mailander, Sara (Jaime) Capella of Washington, DC, John Mailander of Carroll, IA, Jill (Jon) Swanson of Boise, ID, Adam Watson and fiancé Christi Diesing of Omaha, NE, Philip and Daniel Swenson of Olympia, WA; two great-grandsons: Connor Mailander and Andrew Swanson; brothers: Malcom Pollard of Nehawka, NE, and Arthur (Norma) Pollard of Wayne, NE; sister Imogene Bruce of Lincoln, NE; and many other relatives and friends.

Oren was preceded in death by his parents, Oren and Gertrude Pollard; brother Robert A Pollard; nephew Lynn Pollard; sister-in-law Ruth Pollard; brother-in-law Clayton Bruce; and two infant grandsons, Aaron and Andrew Swenson.

Peggy Jensen

Peggy Lynn (Morehead) Jensen, 53, of Kansas City, Kan., formerly of Sioux City, was called home by her heavenly father at her residence on Monday, Aug. 16, 2004.

Services were held Thursday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Kansas City, KS. Local services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Sioux City, followed by Graveside services in Newell Cemetery, Newell, Iowa. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Local arrangements are by Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Peggy was born Jan. 23, 1951, in Sioux City, to James and Marian Morehead. She graduated from Central High School in 1969 and received a degree in nursing from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Sioux City in 1972.

She married Ronald E. Jensen on Sept. 2, 1972, and moved to Washington D.C.,where she worked at George Washington University Hospital. They later moved to Ames, Iowa, where she worked at Mary Greeley Hospital. They then moved to Kansas City, where they have lived since 1977.

She was active in the development of the Hospital Christian Fellowship of Kansas City and was on the site councils for West Middle School and Summer Academy. She loved her work at church, where she was a member and pioneer of the Hispanic bilingual ministry at Grace Lutheran Church and Our Savior Lutheran Church. She also was the president of Mount View Neighborhood Association.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Ronald E. Jensen; two beautiful daughters, Elizabeth of Topeka, Kan., and Kathryn of Kansas City; her parents, James and Marian Morehead of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, James Jr. and Lois Morehead of Hinton, Iowa; a sister and her husband, Victoria and the Rev. David Bott of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; her parents-in-law, Elmer and Marjorie Jensen of Newell, Iowa; a brother-in-law and his wife, Larry and Donita Jensen of Waterloo, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who love her very much.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents; several aunts, uncles and a brother-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church For Hispanic bilingual ministry or the Kansas City Hospice.

Ethel M. Grotjohn

Ethel M. Grotjohn, age 84, of Storm Lake, Iowa and formerly of Schaller, Iowa, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2005 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake after a lengthy illness.

Funeral Services will be Monday, April 4, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in rural Schaller, with Reverend Henry Huddleston and Pastor Doug Corlew officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Sunday, April 3, 2005 from 2-5:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where family present from 3-5:00 p.m.

Ethel was born on August 24, 1920 in Schaller, the daughter of Roy and Martha (Siebrecht) Currie. Ethel attended and graduated from the Schaller High School in 1937. While in high school, Ethel played basketball; she also entered a state typewriting competition along with two teammates—and the trio won the state championship.

On August 17, 1941, Ethel was united in marriage to Harold William Grotjohn at the home of her parents in rural Schaller. Their union was blessed with four children. Ethel was a devoted mother who loved her family and treasured the time she spent with them. The family lived and farmed east of Schaller. Ethel enjoyed needlework, gardening, canning and attending various club activities. She and Harold enjoyed watching baseball games together. The family attended country church at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ.

In 1980, Harold and Ethel retired from farming and moved to the city of Schaller. In 2000, Harold and Ethel moved to Wel-Life Assisted Living in Alta, Iowa; in 2002, they moved to Sunset Knoll in Aurelia, Iowa, and in 2003, the couple moved to Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Harold of Storm Lake; son Dean Grotjohn and wife Betty of Apple Valley, Minnesota, son LaDon Grotjohn of Schaller, son Gary Grotjohn and wife Linda of Schaller and daughter Carolee Franzkowiak and husband Paul of Schaller. Grandchildren include: Sander Grotjohn and wife Anissa of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, Peter Grotjohn and wife Jessica of Storrs, Connecticut, Deena Grotjohn of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Amy Brass and husband Jory of Lansing, Michigan, Jeni Grotjohn of Storm Lake, and Leah, Lynn and Nick Franzkowiak of Schaller. Great-Grandchildren are Cameron and Noah Grotjohn of Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

Ethel has two brothers who mourn her passing, Wilbur Currie and wife Evelyn of Schaller and Delbert Currie of Storm Lake, as well as nieces, nephews, many other relatives and a host of friends.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, and daughter-in-law Linda Darlene Grotjohn, the wife of LaDon.

Gregory D. Sievers

Gregory D. Sievers, age 46, of Spencer, Iowa and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, May 2, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Connie Spitzack officiating. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Sunday, May 1, 2005 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., where the family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Greg was born May 27, 1958 in Storm Lake, Iowa to Roger and Delores (Pyle) Sievers. He was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church, baptized in 1958 at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake and confirmed in 1972 at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. He was currently a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.

Greg attended grade school in Rembrandt, Webb and Spencer, Iowa before graduating in 1976 from Albert City-Truesdale High School. During high school Greg was active in FFA and earned a number of blue ribbons for his projects. Following his high school graduation, he continued his education with classes at Iowa Lakes Community College. He was employed as a truck driver for Sara Lee Corporation.

On August 20, 1977, Greg was married to Jeanne Brechler at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. Two daughters, Trudy and Katie, blessed their marriage. He and Jeanne later divorced. Greg was united in marriage to Dorrie Stearns on August 6, 2004 at West Lake Okoboji, Iowa.

Greg worked for Sara Lee driving truck for 16 years. During that time, he maintained an accident free record.

Greg had many interests in life and lived each day to its fullest. He enjoyed the outdoors and liked to spend time traveling, camping and boating. He enjoyed watching sports contests; his favorites were the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Bears and the Minnesota Twins. He was an avid NASCAR and Jeff Gordon fan.

Above all, Greg loved his wife, his daughters and his family and treasured the time he spent with them. He will be missed every day.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Dorrie Sievers of Spencer; his daughters: Trudy Sievers of Phoenix, Arizona and Katie Sievers of Marion, Iowa; his parents, Roger and Delores Sievers of Storm Lake; his sisters: Rhonda Sievers of Plattsmouth, Nebraska and Denise (Andy) Ishikawa of Honolulu, Hawaii; his niece, Amanda Ishikawa of Honolulu; as well as many other relatives and a host of friends.

Greg was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Fred and Leona Sievers; his maternal grandparents, Wayne and Louise Pyle; and his aunt, Jeanette Terrill.

June E. Skeels

Funeral services for June Skeels will be held on Monday, December 19th at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be at the Storm Lake Cemetery under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home.

A visitation will be held Sunday from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake.

June E. Skeels, age 85, of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, December 15, 2005, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

June was born on June 27, 1920 in Storm Lake the daughter of Frank A. and Anna C. (Pedersen) Skeels. She graduated from Storm Lake High School and continued her education at Buena Vista College, UCLA, the University of Hawaii and University of Oklahoma.

She taught school in Tonkawa, OK and worked as a secretary at American Baptist Assembly and hotel reservationists in Green Lake, WI. June moved back to Storm Lake after retiring.

June was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake. She was also a member of the Keystone Reading Club, Ingleside Club, Storm Lake Camera Club, BVRMC Auxiliary, Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, AAUM, NEA, and National Association of Teachers of Singing. She had a love for reading, music, photography, and teaching children.

Those left to cherish her memory are her adopted daughters: Ann Jones and her husband Web of Kansas City, MO and Claudette Fiskin of Muskogee, OK; sister Myrna Edwards and husband Francis of Newell, IA; two nephews: Douglas Edwards and wife Debbie of Southlake, TX, and Randy Edwards and wife Dyann of Fonda, IA; her two nieces: Laurie Rasmussen and husband Rod and Melinda Buchholz and husband Tony all of Newell, IA; many grand nieces and nephews, several cousins and many friends.

June was preceded in death by her parents and several aunts and uncles.

Marlyn Hase

Marlyn Rae Hase, age 82, of Newell, Iowa and formerly of Schaller, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, May 21, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Schaller, with Reverend Carol Gailey officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Friday, May 20, 2005 from 4-7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where family will be present.

Born Marlyn Rae Toomer to Frank and Elsie Toomer on September 13, 1922, she was the sixth daughter of seven children. She graduated from Early High School in 1940 and worked as a telephone operator. She married Vernon Paul Hase on October 3, 1942 in Yuma, Arizona and they spent the first few years of their marriage living in California and working at the Rohr Defense Plant. They returned to the Midwest, first to Omaha and then Schaller. They opened Vern’s Café, and then Vernon and his brother, Kermit Hase bought Koch’s Appliance Store. During this time, they adopted David Paul Hase born February 28th, 1950 and Susan Elaine Hase born September 22, 1953. Vernon and Marlyn were active within the United Methodist Church, where Marlyn taught Sunday school and sang in the choir.

Vernon died in September of 1962 and Marlyn worked at the Lumber Yard, Woodke Enterprises and 22 ½ years with Andy’s (and later Parky’s) Café.

She loved music, fishing, game shows and travel. In February of 2002, she moved to the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Marlyn is survived by her daughter, Susan Hase of Storm Lake, Iowa; her son, David and wife Sue Hase, and their children, Bryan Hase, Erin and Dale Jones all of Orlando Florida; sisters- and brothers-in-law: Mrs George Hase, Newell, Iowa, Mr & Mrs Kermit Hase, Holstein, Iowa, Mr & Mrs Howard Stille, Alta, Iowa, Mr & Mrs Frank Hase, Eagle Rock, Missouri, and Adella Shroth, Rolling Rock, California; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

Marlyn was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; her parents, Frank and Elsie Toomer; her sisters, Irene (Lawrence) Riley, Maxine (George) Gunville, Garlene (Byrhl) Cates; two infant sisters; and her brother Melvin “Bud” Toomer.

Mary L. Miller

Mary L. Miller, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Friday, November 4, 2005 at Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral mass will be held on Monday, November 7, 2005 at 10:30 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Sunday, November 6, 2005 from 3:00-8:00 pm, where the family will be present from 6:00-8:00 pm. There will be a family led rosary at 3:30 pm and a parish vigil service at 7:00 pm.

Mary Anna Leona Louise Dick was born on April 12, 1913 in Schaller, Sac County, Iowa to John and Madalena (Schmitt) Dick. She lived with her family in Sac County and attended school in Early and graduated in 1930. Her education continued in Carroll, Iowa at St. Anthony’s Nursing School.

In 1913, Mary was baptized at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Early where she was later confirmed. She was a current member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake and an honorary member of the St. Mary’s Guild.

On April 28, 1936, Mary was united in marriage to William J. Miller. To this union, seven children were born: Marguerite, Kenneth, Janette, Roger, Lois, Louise and Maxine. She was a proud housewife and mother, as well as a midwife.

Mary was a polio survivor since 1948. She loved flowers and cooking. Many of her most prized moments were those spent with her children and grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Marguerite and husband Gene Huelman of Schaller, Iowa, Kenneth J. and wife Pat Miller of Storm Lake, Janette Vacek and husband Raymond of Alpha, Minnesota, Lois Miller of Hulbert, Oklahoma, Louise Bohaty and husband Carroll of Ceresco, Nebraska, Maxine McCarthy and husband James of DeGraff, Minnesota ; 29 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law Marita Dick of Silver Bay, Minnesota and Marcella Dick of Storm Lake; many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William in December of 1977; son Roger Miller in December of 1970; brothers: Alfred, Henry, John, Leo, Bernard, and Francis J. (in 1930 at age 29); and sister Elsie Dick who died at age 4.

Wilbur Tucker

Wilbur Tucker, age 75, of Gainesville, Florida and former resident and mayor of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Friday, May 20, 2005 in Gainesville.

Funeral Services in Storm Lake will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. The AMVETS Post #66 will perform Military Rites.

Friends may call anytime after 4:00 on Monday, May 30, 2005 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.

In lieu of Flowers, the family requests memorials are made to the Tucker Memorial Tree Museum Fund, which has been established at Security Bank in Storm Lake. Mr. Tucker was the inspiration for the Storm Lake Tree Museum as well as a key player in establishing the Tree Museum, which today flourishes in the area of Sunset Park in Storm Lake.

Wilbur was born January 8, 1930 in LeMars, Iowa to Charles R. and Bertha Mae (Dempster) Tucker. He grew up in LeMars and graduated from LeMars High School with the Class of 1949. Wilbur served his country with honor in the United States Air Force from 1950 through 1954 and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

On June 15, 1953, Wilbur was united in marriage to Thelma Patricia Redmond in LeMars, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two sons, Michael and Charles, and a daughter, Kim.

Wilbur owned and operated a dry cleaning business in Akron, Iowa from1955-1961 before coming to Storm Lake. There he purchased Elliott Cleaners and changed the business name to Orchid Cleaners in 1962.

Wilbur was a tireless worker in his community. He was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, Hy-Noon Kiwanis, an active fundraiser for Storm Lake’s Gingerbread House, a Faith Hope and Charity board member, and helped with Boy Scouts and Little League. Furthermore, he was a member of Storm Lake PTA, Masonic Lodge, Iowa Drycleaners Association, SERPACI and a Past Patron of O.E.S. plus a host of other activities too numerous to list. Civic responsibility called him in 1980 and he ran and was elected as a Storm Lake City Councilperson. He was elected Mayor of the City of Storm Lake in 1982 and held that office until 1992.

Above all, Wilbur was a loving husband and devoted father and beloved grandfather who treasured the time he spent with his family. His love and enthusiasm for family, community and life in general will be missed by all who knew him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of nearly 52 years, Thelma Tucker of Gainesville, Florida; sons Michael and wife Debbie Tucker of Interlachen, Florida and Dr. Charles and wife Laurie Tucker of Gainesville, Florida; daughter Kim and husband Kevin Dale of Tucson, Arizona; his six grandchildren: Meggen Tucker Sixbey, Mary Tucker, Seth Tucker, Aaron Dale, Ellen Dale and Emily Dale; one great-granddaughter, Alex Sixbey; his brother, Dr. Charles and Ruth Tucker of Iowa City, Iowa; as well as many relatives and a host of friends.

Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents.
