Alvin Giese

Alvin Lee Giese, 91, a resident of the Toulon Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Toulon, Illinois, formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died at 3:05 am Tuesday, October 24, 2006, at the Health Care Center.

Visitation in Toulon will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm Wednesday, October 25, 2006, at DeBolt-Kidd Funeral Home. Visitation in Storm Lake will be held from 10:00 - 11:00 am on Friday, October 27th, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. A graveside service will follow at 11:30 am at the Storm Lake City Cemetery.

Born April 11, 1915, in Powell, WY, the son of Levi & Chloey Rounds Giese, Alvin married Mary Ellen Maxey on June 6, 1939, in Minneapolis, MN. She survives, along with two sons, Brian (and Sylvia) Giese of Kewanee, IL, and Gary (and Jackie) Giese of Maryville, TN; six grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Glenn Giese of Woodstock, IL. He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

He served as a Church of Christ minister for many years, serving churches in Minnesota, Nebraska, & Iowa, last serving at Storm Lake Church of Christ, Storm Lake, Iowa before retiring in 1981. Prior to serving in the ministry, he was a teacher and a farmer.

Alvin was a member of the Storm Lake Rotary Club, trustee for Nebraska Christian College, Omaha, Nebraska, was a director on the Christian Evangelistic Mission Board of Directors, and was a member of Storm Lake Church of Christ.

Memorial contributions may be made to Nebraska Christian College, Omaha, Nebraska.

Charles LaDon McDonough

Charles LaDon McDonough, age 88, of Schaller, Iowa died on Friday, August 4, 2006 at his home in rural Schaller.

Funeral Service for Charles “LaDon” McDonough of Schaller will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Schaller Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Cook Center Cemetery in Rural Schaller. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be Sunday from 6-8 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller.

LaDon was born December 2, 1917 on the family farm in rural Schaller to Charley and Ethel (Gilmour) McDonough. He received his education in Odebolt and graduated with the class of 1935. He entered service to his country in the United States Army on July 8th of 1942 and served through May 31, 1943.

On December 21, 1944, LaDon was united in marriage to Ruthann Potter at the First Presbyterian Church in Schaller. They were blessed with three children: John, Jim and Jean. LaDon was a farmer who lived his life working the land. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, as well as, a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a Trustee within the church.

LaDon took special pleasure later in life traveling and surveying the crops. He was also an avid sports fan. A loving husband and devoted father, LaDon treasured every moment he spent with his family. His caring presence will be dearly missed by his family and friends every day.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years, Ruthann of Schaller; son John (Norma) McDonough of Early, Iowa; son Jim (Cathy) McDonough of Schaller; daughter Jean McDonough of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren: Michele (Jason) Ronfeldt of Schaller; Melanie Currie of Schaller; Mike McDonough of Schaller; Mark McDonough of Schaller; Jacob, Kris and Jennifer Anspach of Cedar Rapids; step grandchildren: Cindy (Dan) Schroeder of Odebolt, Iowa; Rick (Sue) Thies of Sac City, Iowa; great-grandchildren: Kayla, Tasha and Austin Ronfeldt; Kaitlyn Currie; Courtney Pyle; step great-grandchildren: Travis and Chelsea Schroeder; Justin and Kyle Thies; Kyle and Ashley Ellis; Amanda Thies; Dallas and Melinda Thies; sisters-in-law Inez McDonough of Sac City and Kay Creel of Kettering, Ohio; brothers-in-law Jim (Marlys) Potter of Ames, Iowa; Don (Connie) Potter of Sioux City; extended family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Margaret Helming; brothers Howard and Clyde; daughter-in-law Joyce McDonough; step great-granddaughter Heather Schroeder; and step grandson Randy Thies.

Edward Van Veldhuizen

Edward Van Veldhuizen, age 80, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Service for Mr. Van Veldhuizen are scheduled for Friday, November 3, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Flag presentation will be by AMVETS Post #66. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, 2006 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Ed was born on a farm near Matlock, Iowa, the son of Evert and Susie Van Veldhuizen. He grew up in Hospers, Iowa where he attended the Christian Schools. At the age of eighteen, he—together with his brother—enlisted in the United States Navy. Eventually he was stationed on the USS Philadelphia and served in the Mediterranean Theatre of War.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he enrolled the second semester at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, where he met his future wife, Helen Witter. They were married August 27, 1947 in the Storm Lake Methodist Church. The couple continued to live in Sioux City while Ed finished his college degree. In 1948 they set up housekeeping in Sheldon, Iowa, where Ed was affiliated with Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. Their four wonderful children were born in Sheldon: Carol, Thomas, Curtis and Judy. After eleven years, the family moved to Mason City, Iowa, where they lived for four years. In 1963 they built a new home in Storm Lake and have lived there ever since.

Many years ago, Ed was on the boards of Methodist Manor and the Harker House in Storm Lake. He also delivered Meals on Wheels for many years.

Ed was a true nature lover. There was nothing he enjoyed more than working in his yard and in his flower gardens. He called his back yard his little sanctuary and would sit and watch the hummingbirds, wrens and butterflies.

Over the years, Ed volunteered many hours of work on the gardens at Lake Creek Country Club and Clara Griffels Garden. He was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake.

Ed loved to travel, especially to Door County in Wisconsin, with good friends. He and his wife enjoyed a Flower and Garden Tour of Europe and a family cruise with their adult children. When his health permitted, he enjoyed a good game of golf.

Ed cherished his good friends and the morning coffee group at the Pantry Café in downtown Storm Lake. When he could no longer get out, he spent many hours working sudoku and crossword puzzles.

Ed was a generous and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be missed beyond words.

Ed and Helen were the honored recipients of the 2006 Wendell Halverson Outstanding Friend Award given by the Buena Vista University Alumni Association.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Helen of Storm Lake; four children: Carol (Bob) Payton of Liberty, Missouri; Tom (Jill) Van Veldhuizen of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Curtis Van Veldhuizen of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Judy (David) Ploeger of Storm Lake; seven grandchildren: Susan (Ernie) Pither; Jill and Jeff Payton; Bryan and Kristen Van Veldhuizen; Tony (Robyn) Ploeger; and Peggy Ploeger; one great-grandchild, Weston Ploeger; one brother, Gilbert; two sisters: Cornelia Van Leeuwen and Bertha Van Gorp; several nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Cornelius; and a sister, Nellie Den Hartog.

Eunice Wise

Eunice Wise, age 84, formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away peacefully at Cheney Golden Age Home in Cheney, Kansas on August 7, 2006.

Memorial services for Mrs. Wise are scheduled for Monday, September 11, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Storm Lake, with Reverend Jack Barber officiating. Inurnment will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no visitation.

Eunice Katherine Illum was born January 11, 1922 in Alta, Iowa. She was the daughter of Hans and Mary Illum. She attended school at Highview and Truesdale before graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1940. Eunice married Dean Wise on June 14, 1942. To this union three children were born: Roger Dean (1943), Roberta Lavonne (1945) and Raymond Keith (1947). Dean and Eunice were married for 48 years until Dean’s death on August 9, 1990.

All of Eunice’s life was spent in Buena Vista County, except for 1976 – 1986, when the Wise’s farmed near Cowgill, Missouri. They retired and moved to Storm Lake in 1986. In 2001, Eunice moved to Wichita, Kansas to be near her daughter and family. After suffering two strokes in August 2005, Eunice lived in a nursing home.

Those left to cherish Eunice’s memory are her son, Roger of Sheridan, Oregon; her daughter, Roberta (Rollie) Monson of Wichita, Kansas; her son, Raymond of Lincoln, Missouri; grandchildren: Roxanne Spratte, Rodney (Donna) Wise of Guthrie Center, Iowa; Rolanda (David) Maness of El Dorado, Kansas, Rob (Kelli) Monson of Cheney, Kansas, Reg (Shannon) Monson of Cheney, Kansas, Temple Wise and Tony Wise; 16 great-grandchildren: Shelby Spratte, Chance and Ethan Wise, Amanda, Jay, Josh, Jon Jared and Justin Maness, Riley Gilley, Tucker Monson, Emily Monson, Brandon, Brian, Christopher and Kimberly Wise; sister Lavon Swink; extended family and friends.

Eunice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dean Wise; brothers Ernest, Wesley, Vernley and Cardia; and her sister, Naomi Nelson.

Heuang Khounlo

Heuang Khounlo, age 73, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, November 5, 2006 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 11, 2006 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be Sunday, November 12, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the Storm Lake Cemetery. Pastor Barry Thongvanh will officiate.

Friends may call on Friday, November 10, 2006 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present. Burial will be Sunday, November 12, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the Storm Lake Cemetery.

Heuang was born September 13, 1933 in Hanoi, the daughter of Bong and Mouane Baccam. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Southeast Asian Community ThaiDam Church. She regularly attended church and enjoyed participating in church functions.

Heuang took pride in sewing her own clothing and in her garden of herbs and vegetables. She loved her family and the time she could spend with them. She not only raised her own children, but her grandchildren also. Her family will remember her as a sweet, giving person who took care of everyone.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Bao (Billy) Khounlo, Boun (Mike) Khounlo, Sene (Duke) Khounlo, Kham Khounlo, all of Storm Lake; and Chay Lo of Denison, Iowa; her sisters: Nho Lo of Storm Lake; Nhouai Baccam and Pa Baccam of Slona, Vietnam; grandchildren: Barbie Synarong, Minna Sithep, Jimmy Khounlo and Toni Khounlo, all of Des Moines, Iowa; Skyler Khounlo of Storm Lake; Sommay Khounlo of Memphis, Tennessee; Brandi Khounlo and Eric Khounlo, both of Virginia; Shannon Comparan of Storm Lake; Justin Lo, Jessica Lo and Jaclyn Lo of Denison; as well as many other relatives and a host of friends.

Heuang was preceded in death by her parents, Bong & Mouane Baccam; her husband, Van Khounlo; her daughter, Bor Khounlo; her son, Bau Khounlo; brothers Oune, Chay and Theu Baccam; sisters Oume and Teu Baccam; and sister-in-law, Dzome Khounlo

Kenneth W. Stille

Kenneth W. Stille, age 78, of Schaller, Iowa died Saturday, December 9, 2006 at his home in rural Schaller, Iowa.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller with Pastor David Lyons officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery with military honors presented by the Schaller VFW.

Friends may call Tuesday, December 12, 2006 from 4-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will be present from 6-8:00 pm. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Kenneth William Stille was born January 4, 1928, in Buena Vista County, Iowa, the son of William and Lillie (Offerle) Stille. He received his country school education from Maple Valley #7.

Kenneth was baptized on March 4, 1928 and confirmed in May of 1941 at Immanuel Reformed Church of Christ in rural Schaller.

Kenneth served in the United States Army in the mid-forties at Camp Carson, Colorado and Fort Riley, Kansas.

On February 20, 1950, Kenneth was united in marriage to Arletta Wendel at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller. This union was blessed with three daughters: Ruth Ann, Beverly and Linda.

Kenneth farmed in rural Schaller, where he found great satisfaction in working the land. In addition, he loved gardening, fishing and playing baseball. He played for the Schaller Red Caps and the Storm Lake White Caps in the late 1940s, and fondly reflected on these times. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, where he had been a Sunday school teacher and served as a church elder.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Arletta Stille; daughters: Ruth Ann Bauman and her husband Duane of Sac City, Iowa, Beverly Stille of Cincinnati, Ohio and Linda Stille of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren: Denise Mustaine and her husband Jon; Stacey Bauman and Lisa Scuito; great-grandchildren: Rylan, Grace and Taylor Mustaine and Ashton Scuito; four brothers: Marvin Stille and his wife Molly, Richard Stille and his wife Connie, Russell Stille, and Howard Stille and his wife Mary; two sisters: Jeanette and her husband Don Carter and Dorothy and her husband Melvin Ploeger; one sister-in-law, Mary Stille (wife of Donald); nieces, nephews and a host of extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Clarabelle; brother Donald Stille; and two sisters-in-law, Donna Jean Stille and Patricia Stille.

Ryon Ellefson

Ryon Ellefson, age 30, of Westside, Iowa and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, August 20, 2006 as the result of injuries received in a motorcycle accident.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, August 26, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Connie Spitzack and Reverend Mark Youngquist co-officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2006 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Ryon Jay Ellefson was born June 24, 1976 in Winstead, Minnesota. He attended grade school in Storm Lake before graduating from New Creations High School in 1994. On June 17, 2006, Ryon was united in marriage to Victory Ward at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta, Iowa. After they were married, Ryon and Victory made their home in Westside.

Ryon was employed as a corporate trainer at Liberty Food Service. He enjoyed outdoor activities, liked to water ski, motorcycling and riding his ATV at the farm. He enjoyed speed boating and fireworks. Ryon was a member of Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited.

He will be remembered for his love of life and for living each day to its fullest. Ryon will be missed dearly by those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Victory of Westside; parents, Ronald and Connie Ellefson of Storm Lake; brother Rob Ellefson of Champaign, Illinois; father- and mother-in-law, Dennis and Shirley Fineran of Denison, Iowa; sister-in-law Stephenie Ward of Denison; sister- and brother-in-law Chelly and Duane Ward of Richland, Washington; brothers-in-law Chris Fineran of Kansas City, Missouri and Patrick Fineran of Denison; sister- and brother-in-law Wendie and Nick Cadwell of Earling, Iowa; a nephew, Caleb and a niece, Grace; grandfather-in-law Louie Behnk of Elgin, Nebraska; aunts and uncles: Bob and Dorly Ellefson of DeSoto, Iowa; Pat and Jerry Van Benschoten of Howard Lake, Minnesota; LuAnne and Dave Jorgenson of Rochester, Minnesota; Nancy Corpe of Salem, Oregon; Lois Ellefson of Adel, Iowa; Ruth Ellefson of Sturgis, South Dakota; LeRoy and Cynthia Graham of Chicago, Illinois; Daniel Richmond of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; many cousins, extended family and a host of friends.

Ryon was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Graydon and Sarah Graham; paternal grandparents, Ernest and Eleanor Ellefson; uncle Terry Graham and uncle Jeff Ellefson.

Alma M. Hummel

Alma M. Hummel, age 95, of Cushing, Iowa and formerly of Schaller, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hummel will be held Monday, June 18, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, with Reverend David Lyons officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Hummel was born July 26, 1911 in Tower City, North Dakota, the daughter of August and Emma (Schwartz) Tack. She was baptized October 11, 1911 in Tower City. Alma’s parents were homesteading southwest of Valentine, Nebraska and making their home in a sod house. In 1918, Alma’s parents died in the flu epidemic, leaving four children. The children were taken to North Dakota by train to live with relatives.

Alma’s aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gosch, went to North Dakota and brought her back to Wall Lake, Iowa and raised her in their home. She attended school at Levey No. 3 west of Wall Lake. She was confirmed in Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake on March 28, 1926. After graduating from 8th grade, Alma worked as a “hired girl” until she married William V. Hummel on August 20, 1930 in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple lived in Odebolt, Iowa until 1940, when they moved to Ida Grove, Iowa, where Bill was employed at the Ida Grove Creamery. In 1942 they moved to a farm by Arthur, Iowa and then to Schaller in 1945, where they farmed until 1974, when they retired and moved to Schaller. William died on February 28, 1975. In 1993, Alma moved to Cushing. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards and Aggravation, and doing crossword puzzles. She was a member of the auxiliary of the Odebolt Nursing Home for 20 years.

Survivors include her daughter and husband, Barbara and Lawrence Miller of Correctionville, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Ann Tack of Beaverton, Oregon; a son-in-law, Cecil Anderson of South Onawa, Iowa; cousin Verna (Mrs. Melvin) Bahr of Wall Lake, Iowa; 18 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren; other family and friends.

Alma was preceded in death by her husband, William V. Hummel in 1975; her daughter, Wilma Jean “Pat” Winkler in 1991; her daughter, Velma Arlene “Short” Anderson in 1985; her sister, Velma, Mrs. James Fauglid in 1942; her sister, Vera, Mrs. Norman Egge of Ely, Nevada; her brother, Allen Tack; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Tack in 1918; her foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gosch; cousins Carl Lange, Emil Lange, Elmer Lange and Melinda Hoefling; and three great-grandchildren.
