Alma M. Hummel

Alma M. Hummel, age 95, of Cushing, Iowa and formerly of Schaller, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hummel will be held Monday, June 18, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, with Reverend David Lyons officiating. Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Hummel was born July 26, 1911 in Tower City, North Dakota, the daughter of August and Emma (Schwartz) Tack. She was baptized October 11, 1911 in Tower City. Alma’s parents were homesteading southwest of Valentine, Nebraska and making their home in a sod house. In 1918, Alma’s parents died in the flu epidemic, leaving four children. The children were taken to North Dakota by train to live with relatives.

Alma’s aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gosch, went to North Dakota and brought her back to Wall Lake, Iowa and raised her in their home. She attended school at Levey No. 3 west of Wall Lake. She was confirmed in Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake on March 28, 1926. After graduating from 8th grade, Alma worked as a “hired girl” until she married William V. Hummel on August 20, 1930 in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple lived in Odebolt, Iowa until 1940, when they moved to Ida Grove, Iowa, where Bill was employed at the Ida Grove Creamery. In 1942 they moved to a farm by Arthur, Iowa and then to Schaller in 1945, where they farmed until 1974, when they retired and moved to Schaller. William died on February 28, 1975. In 1993, Alma moved to Cushing. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards and Aggravation, and doing crossword puzzles. She was a member of the auxiliary of the Odebolt Nursing Home for 20 years.

Survivors include her daughter and husband, Barbara and Lawrence Miller of Correctionville, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Ann Tack of Beaverton, Oregon; a son-in-law, Cecil Anderson of South Onawa, Iowa; cousin Verna (Mrs. Melvin) Bahr of Wall Lake, Iowa; 18 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren; other family and friends.

Alma was preceded in death by her husband, William V. Hummel in 1975; her daughter, Wilma Jean “Pat” Winkler in 1991; her daughter, Velma Arlene “Short” Anderson in 1985; her sister, Velma, Mrs. James Fauglid in 1942; her sister, Vera, Mrs. Norman Egge of Ely, Nevada; her brother, Allen Tack; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Tack in 1918; her foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gosch; cousins Carl Lange, Emil Lange, Elmer Lange and Melinda Hoefling; and three great-grandchildren.

Cindy D. Richardson

Cindy D. Richardson, age 54, of Lake View and recently of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, October 7, 2007 at her home in Lake View.

Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend William Vitt serving as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Wall Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where family will be present from 6-8:00 p.m. A Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. and a vigil service held at 7:00 p.m., all at the funeral home that evening.

Cindy Diana Drilling was born June 20, 1953 in Sac City, Iowa to Edward and Frances (Eldridge) Drilling. She lived with her parents in Lake View, Manilla, Iowa Falls and Sioux City before moving back to Lake View. Cindy attended Lake View-Auburn High School and later Iowa Central Community College.

On January 23, 1970, Cindy was united in marriage to Ted C. Richardson in Lake View, Iowa. They made their home in Lake View, Lytton, and Everly and for many years in Storm Lake.

Cindy was baptized at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. She worked nearly ten years at the Buena Vista Work Activity Center, holding various positions, and for the American Cancer Society as Income Development Director. Cindy served on several steering committees, state and national, receiving numerous awards including leading advocates in raising the highest per capita in the state to fight cancer. Over the years, Cindy was an active Jaycee in Everly, Iowa, receiving State awards for outstanding Unit Treasurer. She served as a Storm Lake Ambassador, including one term as president and served on the Storm Lake police advisory committee. She was active in the Storm Lake chapter of the Hy-Noon Kiwanis and a member of S.O.S. Most important to her was her family; she loved her family very much.

Those thankful for sharing her life include her husband, Ted C. Richardson of Lake View; her daughter, Jody Ledezma and her husband Oscar and their sons, Patrick and Diego of Omaha, Nebraska; son, Ted R. Richardson and his wife Charity and their son, Tate of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; daughter, Kayla Richardson of Storm Lake, Iowa; brother, John Drilling and his wife Teresa and their children, Tiffany and Joshua (Crystal); half-brother, Ken Drilling and his wife Angie; step-brothers: Mark Schmidt and his wife Andrea and Steven Drilling; nieces, nephews, as well as a host of friends.

Preceding Cindy in death were her father, Edward K. Drilling; half sister, Annette Drilling; and granddaughter, Bezabella Dianah Ledezma.

David Lang

David Lang, age 72, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Saturday, October 6, 2007 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral Service will be Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors by the Storm Lake AMVETS Post # 66. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call after 4:00 pm on Monday, October 8, 2007 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present from 6-8:00 pm. A vigil service will be at 7:00 pm with the rosary to follow, all at the funeral home.

David was born in Ayrshire, Iowa, on April 3, 1935 to Anthony and Irene (Kleigl) Lang. Dave lived with his family in the Laurens area where he attended Laurens school for 10 1/2 years. His family moved to Storm Lake in 1953, where Dave attended and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in 1954.

Dave was baptized at the Ayrshire Catholic Church as a child and later became a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake.

On June 27, 1955, Dave was united in marriage to Wilma McConkey at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. They were blessed with five children: William, Marla, Pamela, Beverly and Deborah.

From 1976-99, Dave owned his own plumbing business, Lang Plumbing, where he worked with his son. He was a member of the U.S. National Guard for three years as well as a member of the National Convention for Scooters. Additionally, Dave collected Cushman scooters, King Midget cars and trains. Dave will be remembered as a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Wilma; son, William “Willie” Lang and his wife Jan of Storm Lake; daughters: Marla Lawson and her husband Jim of Overland Park, Kansas, Pamela Hesse and her husband Dave of Alta, Iowa and Beverly Schlegel and her husband Paul of Gardner, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three brothers: Bernard and Mary Lang of Omaha, Nebraska, Leonard and Diana Lang of Omaha, Nebraska and Daniel Lang of California; one sister, Lynda Sands of Omaha, Nebraska; along with many extended family members and friends.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents; youngest daughter, Deborah (Lang) Mueggenberg; and sister, Shirley Descamp.

Eva M. Bonebrake

Eva Bonebrake, age 99, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, December 16, 2007 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.

Memorial Services for Mrs. Bonebrake are scheduled for Saturday, December 22, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake, with Pastor Tom Hinshaw officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Friday, December 21, 2007 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Eva Mae Combes, the daughter of Bert E. and Eva Elda (Morris) Combes, was born January 8, 1908 on a farm south of Emmetsburg, Iowa. She was educated in Hayes Consolidated School and Storm Lake High School. On June 30, 1926, she married Harry Bonebrake in the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake. They became the parents of three children: Burton, Bonita and June. The couple made their home for seven years in Pennsylvania and Maryland before returning to Storm Lake in 1933.

Eva was an active member of First Baptist Church in Storm Lake as long as her health permitted. She served as deaconess and in various Ladies Aid offices. A homemaker for nearly sixty years, Eva began making pies and other baked goods at the request of friends and others in the community. This became a business for Eva, and she was well-known for her delicious products in and around Storm Lake.

She was honored to be one of the grand marshalls, along with baseball great Bob Feller, for the 1995 Storm Lake Star Spangled Spectacular parade, which followed the theme, “Baseball, Mom and Apple Pie.”

Eva was active in the Buena View Federated Garden Club for many years. Her hobbies included gardening, flower arranging, bird watching, sewing, reading and letter writing. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend, and a caring neighbor.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Burton and wife Marjorie of Lakeside, Iowa; daughters: Bonita and husband Don Kier of Newell; June and husband Gary Swain of Ruthven, Iowa; grandchildren: Penny Kaelber and husband John of Iowa City, Iowa; Tammy Horton and husband John of Tecumseh, Kansas; Scott Bonebrake and wife Bonnie of Storm Lake; Nikki Waters and husband Phil of Hayward, California; Karen Yost and husband Dion of Sterling, Kansas; Mark Wilbur and wife Lisa of Centennial, Colorado; Ben French of Eldo, Nevada; and Jeneen Wilson and husband Tim of Chatham, Virginia; step-grandchildren: Crystal Anderson and husband H.J. of Summerville, South Carolina; David Kier and wife Jan, Timothy Kier and wife Joell, and Steve Kier and wife Kolesa, all of Newell; and Patty Kosky and husband Rusty of Storm Lake. Also surviving are eleven great-grandchildren, fourteen step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Lloyd Combes and wife Ferne of Storm Lake, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Preceding Eva in death were her parents; her husband, Harry on June 20, 1966; step-son, Daniel Bonebrake; son-in-law, Walter Wilbur; grandson Jamie Wilbur; sister Grace and her husband Lloyd Haburn; brothers and spouses: Clarence, Merle and Edna, and Omer and Gladys Combes.

John W. Gaffney

John W. Gaffney, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, December 17, 2007 at Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass for Mr. Gaffney will be held on Friday, December 21, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Thursday, December 20, 2007 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m., both at the funeral home during visitation hours.

John William Gaffney was born on a farm near Lohrville, Iowa on April 25, 1920, the son of Ida (Lovett) and William Gaffney.

When John was 12 years of age, the family moved to Carroll where his dad, Bill, started a livestock auction business. The family moved to Storm Lake when John was about fifteen. In 1935, Bill bought five acres at what came to be known as “the sale barn corner” north of Storm Lake on Highway 71, and established the Storm Lake Auction Company. John and his brother Dick soon took it over and eventually turned it into a pillar of the local business scene.

For over 45 years, farmers from all over the region brought their livestock every Saturday to the “sale barn” where “Big John”—in his trademark cowboy hat—ran the auction, his booming voice rising above the noise of the arena. Auctioneer, cattle trader, real estate speculator, stock market investor—John was a multi-talented and successful businessman.

John graduated from Storm Lake St. Mary’s High School in 1937 and then attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, where he lettered in three sports as a sophomore. John even had a stint with the local semi-pro baseball team, the White Caps, once playing against Babe Ruth in an exhibition.

Drafted into the Army in 1942, John served for over three years at Camp Walters in Mineral Wells, Texas. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, pushing inductees through basic training.

John married Dolores Kestel in 1951. That year, they moved into a new house overlooking the waters of Storm Lake. There they raised three children and resided all of their 56 years together in the same house.

A loving and generous husband and father, John spent his retirement years enjoying time with his children and grandchildren, following his favorite sports teams, and managing his investments.

John is survived by his wife, Dolores, along with his three children: Gaylen Nicholas of Austin, Texas, Gary Gaffney of Storm Lake, and Mark Gaffney of Boulder, Colorado. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Debbie Gaffney of Boulder and his four grandchildren: Clay Nicholas of Austin and Angie, Michelle and John Gaffney of Boulder. In addition, John is survived by his sister, Joan Young of Omaha, Nebraska.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Ida Gaffney, sisters Zola Gaffney and Mary Cavanaugh, and brothers Richard and James Gaffney.

Tina E. Claussen

Tina E. Claussen, age 45, of Early, Iowa died on Monday, September 17, 2007 at her home in Early.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 pm, Monday, September 24, 2007, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, with Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Burial will follow at the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 6-8:00 pm, Sunday, September 23, 2007 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will be present.

Tina Eavon Rimmer was born on July 8, 1962 to Claude “Lucky” and Thelma (Bice) Rimmer in Storm Lake, Iowa. She attended grade school at Hayes School and graduated from Storm Lake High School.

In 1971, Tina was baptized at the Church of Christ in Storm Lake, Iowa.

She served her country in the U.S. Army. Additionally, Tina was a member of the Northern Star and the Early Library. She enjoyed reading and gardening. Her children brought her the most enjoyment in her life, and she took enormous pride in them. She cherished all her memories of them, especially watching her son, Cody, play football. The students and events surrounding the Schaller-Crestland school were of great importance to her, as well.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Seth Claussen of Phoenix, Arizona; two brothers: Ivan Rimmer and his wife, Pat of Granville, Iowa and Rex Rimmer and his wife, Tasa of Schaller, Iowa; three sisters: Colleen Stuckenschneider and her husband, Gary of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Wanda Hoffman and her husband Lewis, of Tribune, Kansas and Joann Acton and her husband Walter of Chillicothe, Missouri; one aunt, Norma Delp and her husband Melvin; and numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Preceding Tina in death were her parents; son, Cody; and nephew Christopher.

Arleen C. DeBerg

ArleenArleen C. DeBerg, age 81, of Storm Lake, Iowa and formerly of Battle Creek, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at her home.

Funeral services for Mrs. DeBerg will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek, with Pastor Kevin Freese officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Battle Creek. Serving as casket bearers are Ed Ummach VI, Todd Ummach, Michael Miller, Ronnie Lewis, Henry Reitz and Troy Stauter. Honorary casket bearers are Stacia Stauter, Penny McKnight, Jamie Ummach, Kim Ummach, Tina Miller, Doug Durston. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday for two hours prior to the start of the funeral service.

Arleen Carol Lewis Ummach DeBerg was born and raised in Battle Creek, Iowa on November 11, 1926. She attended kindergarten and 12 years of grade and high school in Battle Creek, graduating from high school in 1944. She then attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa.

Arleen was a legal secretary in Ida Grove, Iowa for three years, and a telephone operator and assistant chief operator in Battle Creek for six years. She was office manager for a doctor in Battle Creek for three years.

In 1962 she became administrator of Sunset Knoll nursing home in Aurelia, Iowa and remained there for six and a half years. She worked briefly for Dr. Malliard in Storm Lake. Then she became administrator of Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake. She worked part-time as administrator of the nursing home in Milford, Iowa for about a year and part-time as administrator of the nursing home in Fonda, Iowa for one year.

Arleen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek, having been baptized there at an early age. She was a Rainbow Girl at Ida Grove and Battle Creek.

On June 25, 1947, Arleen married Carl Ummach in the Morningside Presbyterian Manse in Sioux City, Iowa. To this union, one son was born, Carl Edward Ummach V (Ed). She married Kenneth DeBerg on November 25, 1971 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Arleen loved music and in high school sang solos at Eastern Star and at school functions. She was in the high school chorus, high school band and church choir. She was part of a trio that sang at her high school commencement in 1944.

Arleen also loved to play tennis and won the high school girls championship in Battle Creek. She enjoyed riding horses with friends while in high school, as well.

When her son was young, she was a Cub Scout leader and taught Bible School. She enjoyed many activities with him, such as fishing, roller skating and taking him swimming.

While Arleen lived in Ida Grove in the ‘40’s, she was active in Woman’s Club and enjoyed such things as being chairperson of the style shows, etc. At that time she also belonged to a club whose members had all worked together in various positions in Ida Grove and continued their friendships by meeting once a month and socializing.

Arleen lived in Las Vegas, Nevada, when her son was very young and they enjoyed doing many things together, such as church and Sunday School. She read to her very young son daily and remembered that one of their favorites was “The Little Engine That Could.” Together they enjoyed cats, kittens, their dog, Tex, and their “little ranch” as they called it.

After returning to Battle Creek, the highlight of her life was attending all the activities in which her son was involved. She was a very proud mother.

Arleen was a devoted mother and grandmother. When her grandchildren were little and lived in Storm Lake, she enjoyed babysitting with them and thoroughly enjoyed their weekly visits.

Arleen was a devoted daughter and as a youngster was her dad’s tomboy, as they played ball, jumped hurdles and ran races together. She remained a devoted daughter to her parents all of their lives, by visiting them frequently, having birthday and anniversary parties for them, writing to them and calling them on the phone They enjoyed praying together.

Her sense of loss when her parents went home to be with the Lord only two years apart was immeasurable. She knew in her heart that they were better off in Heaven, but she missed so much the unconditional love that they gave her. Now, dear friends, Arleen is together with them again and so happy! She is walking and laughing with her brave, warrior dad and holding her sweet mother’s hands.

Arlene did her best to stay strong with the Lord and she did believe in her God and talked to Him daily. Now she has gone Home. May she rest in peace.

Survivors include her son, Carl Edward Ummach V and wife Arlene of Sioux City, Iowa; grandchildren: Carl Edward Ummach VI, Todd A. Ummach, Stacia A. Ummach Stauter, Penny L. McKnight and Michael L. Miller; great-grandchildren: Hannah, Charles, Alyssa, Hunter, McKenzie, Regan, Michael, Sarah, Travis, Samantha, Mya, Dathan and Braden; extended family and many friends.

Arleen was preceded in death by her parents and her great-grandson, Tyler A. Ummach.
