Don Crawford

Don Crawford, age 78, of Schaller, Iowa, died Thursday, April 10, 2008 at St. Luke Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services for Mr. Crawford will be held on Monday, April 14, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller.

Burial will be in the Schaller Cemetery with full military rites by the Schaller VFW Post 4704.

The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Sunday, April 13, 2008 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, where the family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Donald Melvin Crawford was born June 29, 1929 in Battle Creek, Iowa, the son of Forrest and Anna (Hayward) Crawford.

He was educated at a country school near Battle Creek, then in the Ida Grove schools before his family moved to Schaller.

Don graduated from Schaller High School in 1946.

Don joined the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict.

A lifelong patriot, Don was a member of the Schaller Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4706.

On June 12, 1955, Don was united in marriage to Margaret Pyle at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller.

The couple was blessed with three children: Lynn, Ellen and Ann.

Don owned and operated a farm implement dealership in Schaller for many years, until his retirement in 1992.

He and Margaret would have been married for 53 years this coming June.

Don was actively involved in community affairs in Schaller.

He served on the Schaller City Council, was a member of the Schaller Chamber of Commerce and served on the Schaller Volunteer Fire Department.

He was also a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller.

Don loved being outside and invested a great deal of time in pursuits that let him spend time in the great outdoors.

He enjoyed his annual deer hunt and was a collector of guns.

Don also had a passion for classic cars and loved to polish up those he owned. He was a history buff who made a point to never stop learning; in his later years he was proud to master operating computers.

Don also enjoyed camping and liked to take his family camping in the western United States.

Whether on a camping trip or at home, spending time with his family and friends was always a priority and a joy for Don.

A kind and gentle man, he will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Margaret, of Schaller; his daughters: Lynn Crawford of Fort Morgan, Colorado; Ellen and husband, Brian Buchholtz and Ann Crawford, all of Prescott, Arizona; his grandchildren: Nicholas and Matthew Buchholtz of Tempe, Arizona and Paige and Reid Price of Prescott, Arizona; his sister Joyce Olbertz of Storm Lake, Iowa; sister- and brother-in-law Jan and Tom Watson of Schaller; sister-in-law Cheri Haack of Schaller; many nieces and nephews and countless friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Floyd; and two sisters: Annabelle Irvin and Beth Eyler.

Helen M. Hoffman

Helen Mildred Hoffman, aged 86, formerly of Storm Lake, passed away at St. Luke's Home, Spencer, Iowa on September 18th, 2008.

Friends may call between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 pm on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home at 1615 W. Milwaukee Ave. in Storm Lake, where the family will be present.

Memorial Services will be 11:00 am, Monday, September 22, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.

In accordance with Helen's wishes cremation has taken place.

The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

The family requests that In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Hospice or The American Cancer Society.

Helen is survived by Kenneth, her devoted and loving husband of 67 years; children: Marcia (Larry) Siefkes of Apple Valley, California, Cheryl (George) Meeter of Rockford, Michigan, Steven (Mary) Hoffman and Bruce (Barb) Hoffman, all of Storm Lake; 13 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; one brother, Don (Bev) Harjes of Victoria, Texas; one sister, Donna Mae (George) Francis of Bloomfield, Iowa; sister-in-law, Lillian Harjes of Spencer, Iowa; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Helen was born on November 21, 1921, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Matilda (Meyer) Harjes.

She was baptized, December 11, 1921 and later confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.

She attended grade school at Washington Township Country school and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1939.

On February 9th 1941, Helen was united in marriage to Kenneth Leroy Hoffman at St. Johns Lutheran Church.

The couple was blessed with four children: Marcia, Cheryl, Steven and Bruce.

In 1951, the Hoffman family became charter members of Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake where Helen became the first president of Grace's Ladies Aid and taught Vacation Bible School, Sunday School and Confirmation.

She was also an active community member, having worked with the Grant Township Community Chest Drive and Little League Baseball.

Much enjoyment was brought to Helen's life by her family, which included her special niece, Connie Fagerholm of Mesa, Arizona.

Helen was proud to be a farmer's wife and work side by side with Kenneth in the day to day operations of their Centennial Farm.

She also enjoyedembroidery, quilting and was never able to drive past a garage sale without stopping.

Additionally, she was a dedicated fan of her favorite soap opera "Days of our Lives".

Helen and Kenneth spent many happy retirement years in Mission, Texas enjoying the warm climate and meeting new friends.

Eating out was one of their favorite activities.

When Kenneth retired from farming, Helen retired from cooking.

Helen will be deeply missed by her family and forever remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and three sisters.

James A. Richter

James A. “Jim” Richter, age 52, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral services for Mr. Richter will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church.

Burial will be in Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

James Allen Richter was born on March 20, 1956 to Clarence and Charlotte (Tyson) Richter in Storm Lake, Iowa.

He attended grade school at Albert City-Truesdale and later graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1974.

He was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, where he remained a member.

Over the years, Jim worked at various jobs in dry cleaning, farming and at Bil-Mar.

He enjoyed doing yard work, and raising hogs and sheep.

He always enjoyed travelling around the neighborhood on his four-wheeler.

Additionally, Jim loved to bake and cook and therefore always had treats in his house to share.

He was a “helpful hand” on all types of projects for family and friends.

Jim dearly loved his nieces and nephews.

Left to cherish his memory are his siblings: Linda (David) Fassler of Storm Lake; Steve (Patti) Richter of Granger, Iowa; twin brother Jon Richter, and Tom Richter, both of Storm Lake; nieces and nephews: Doug Fassler of Storm Lake; Kris (Joe) Moon of Storm Lake; Lisa (Bob) Hass, of Rapid City, South Dakota; Scott Fassler of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Charlotte Richter, Kaylee Richter and Riley Richter, all of Granger, Iowa; Jayme Richter and fiancé, Mandy Demers, of Albert City, Iowa; Kari Richter of Spencer, Iowa; Kyle Richter and Brenna Richter, both of Storm Lake; and great-nieces and great-nephews: Dakota Richter, Kailee Richter, Takoda Krauel, Tyler Moon and Lexi Moon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Charlotte Richter, and his sister, Sharon Fassler.

Anthony Clark

Anthony Clark, age 16, of Schaller, Iowa died Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at Loring Hospital in Sac City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early.

Burial will be in the Lake City Cemetery.

The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime after 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 13, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Schaller, where the family will be present from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00.

A Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. and a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m., all at the church in Schaller.

Anthony Derek Clark was born April 12, 1990 to Scott W. and Linda J. (Holle) Clark at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

He was baptized in the Catholic faith as an infant in St. Mary’s Church in Guthrie Center, Iowa and later confirmed his faith as a youth.

He was currently a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Schaller.

A junior at Schaller-Crestland High School, Tony had planned to continue his education at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, to study accounting.

Tony was very involved in school activities such as business competitions, and participated in several sports, including cross country, track and wrestling.

He had a wide circle of friends with whom he enjoyed spending time, and especially the time he spent with his girlfriend, Ashton Waters.

Some of his favorite activities included skiing, wakeboarding, hunting, fishing, “gameing” with friends Jeremy, Cody, Allen and Cory, bowling and 4-wheeling.

Family was important to Tony.

He loved the “work weekends” at his grandparents’ homes with all his aunts, uncles and cousins around him, as well as the Minnesota vacations with all the family.

Tony was always up to go golfing with Dad and Grandma.

He loved riding the horses with family at Grandpa Duane’s. He was the kind of person who just liked “spreading the love” to his family and friends.

His enthusiasm and happy personality will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Scott and Linda Clark of Schaller; two sisters, Amanda Sue Clark and Abigail Marie Clark, both of Schaller; paternal grandparents Daryl and Sue Terry of Park Rapids, Minnesota and Duane and Janet Clark of Guthrie Center, Iowa; maternal grandparents, Bill and Charlotte Holle of Guthrie Center; uncles and aunts: Chris and Vicki Terry of Lohrville, Iowa; Matt and Angie Clark of Glidden, Iowa; Scott and Jenny Helle of Rockwell City, Iowa; Chadd and Monica Clark of Park Rapids, Minnesota; Cassie Clark of Guthrie Center; Don and Carolyn Schwartz of Bayard, Iowa; Jim and Richelle Holle of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Jeff and Janet Stange of Manson, Iowa; Terry and Kim Betts of Coon Rapids, Iowa; Art Holle of Atlantic, Iowa; numerous cousins, extended family and a host of friends.

Tony was preceded in death by his great-grandparents: Virgil McCrea; Clarence and Florence Clark, Chester and Elizabeth Moore, William and Anna Holle, Sr,; Raymond and Bernice Fank; his cousin, Jodi Grote; and his close friend, Cody Claussen.

May God Bless the memory of Anthony Clark.

Vera Radke-Bradley

Vera Radke-Bradley, age 90, of Albert City, Iowa and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Monday, September 15, 2008 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 25, 2008 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home at 1615 W. Milwaukee Ave. in Storm Lake.

Inurnment will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery.

The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

There will be no visitation.

Vera Irene Harjes was born on September 2, 1918 in Alta, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Matilda (Meyer) Harjes.

She attended country school and graduated from Storm Lake High School.

Vera was baptized in June 1933 and later confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.

On December 29, 1940, Vera was united in marriage to Harold Radke at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.

The couple was blessed with four children: Joanne, Larry, Mary and Rick.

She later married Ralph Bradley on November 25, 1982 at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.

In 1992, Vera became a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake where she taught Sunday School for several years.

She found great enjoyment teaching the youth of the church, as she was a faithful servant of the Lord.

She also enjoyed playing cards and painting.

Left to cherish Vera’s memory are two sons: Larry Radke and his wife Mary Ann of Lake City, Florida and Rick Radke and his wife Donna of Sandy, Oregon; six grandchildren: Trevor Garrels, Vaughn Radke, Zachary Radke, Claudia Radke, Jennifer (Radke) Morgan and her husband, Keef and Justin Radke and his wife, Meredith; one great granddaughter, Ava; one brother, Don Harjes and his wife, Bev of Victoria, Texas; two sisters: Helen Hoffman and her husband, Kenneth of Spencer, Iowa and Donna Mae Francis and her husband, George of Bloomfield, Iowa; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Harold Radke and Ralph Bradley; infant daughter, Joanne Marie; daughter, Mary Garrels; one brother, Harold Harjes; and one sister, Ardelle Swanson.

Lawrence “Larry” Dugan

Long-time Storm Lake attorney, Lawrence “Larry” Dugan, age 68, of Alta, Iowa died on Friday, November 14, 2008 at his residence.

Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake.

Burial will be in the church Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be from 3-8:00 pm, Monday, November 17, 2008 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present the entire time to greet friends.

There will be a parish vigil service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a KC rosary.

Lawrence Edward Dugan was born on August 5, 1940 to Edward F. and Dorothy M. (Zimmer) Dugan in Davenport, Iowa.

attended grade school at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Davenport, graduating high school from St. Ambrose Academy.

Following his graduation, Larry attended St. Ambrose University where he received his bachelor’s degree.

Later, Larry enrolled in law school at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and graduated in 1972.

Additionally, he was a member of the United States Navy Reserves.

A life-long Catholic, Larry was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Davenport.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Parish in Storm Lake, a member of the Knights of Columbus and served on the St. Mary’s Finance and BINGO Committees.

On January 13, 1968, Larry was united in marriage to Mary M. Robinson in Chicago, Illinois.

This union was blessed with five children: Kimberly, Jennifer, Brian, Kate and Benjamin.

Larry was an active community member, involved with the Elks Lodge and Lake Creek Country Club.

He loved golfing and any spectator sports. Over the years, Larry served his community in the legal capacity as an attorney and advisor.

He gained many clients and friends, for whom he worked with and for until his sudden illness.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Kimberly Grussing and her husband, Richard of Rushmore, Minnesota; Jennifer Roth and her husband, Brian of Eagan, Minnesota; Brian Dugan and his wife, Hollie of West Des Moines, Iowa; Kate Glode and her husband, Mike of Apple Valley, Minnesota; Benjamin Dugan and his wife, Meghan of Apple Valley, Minnesota; grandchildren: Bailey, Brooke and Autumn Grussing, Alex and Mary Roth, Madison and Paige Dugan, Stella and Abbigayle Glode, Jackson, Alison and Finnian Dugan; sister-in-law, Judy Dugan of Bettendorf, Iowa; extended family and a host of friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; and one brother, Donald Dugan.
