Burnice Reece (nee) Gilbert

Funeral services for Burnice Reece, 76, of Alta Vista were held at 11:00
a.m., Saturday, October 15, 1994, at Zion Lutheran Church in Alta Vista with the
Rev. David Moore officiating.

Conway Funeral Home at Elma was in charge of arrangements.

Burnice, 76, died Wednesday, October 12, 1994, at St. Mary's
Hospital in Rochester, MN, of natural causes.

Burnice Gilbert was born February 7, 1918, in Woodbury, IA, the
daughter of Gail Gilbert and Cora Royce Gilbert. She graduated
from Woodbury High School. She lived for a time in Indianola and
other communitites in central Iowa where she worked as a waitress.

On September 11, 1972, she married Theodore Reece in Reno, NV.
After their marriage they lived in Mt. Airy, NC, until 1991 when she moved
to AltaVista.

Surviving her are two daughters, Wanda McCullar of Rosharon, TX,
and Joanne Baxter of Alta Vista; one son, Stephen Wood, of Murray, IA;
two brothers, Eugene Gilbert of Elkhart and Wayne Gilbert of Des Moines;
one sister, Helen Holloway of Charleston, WV; and her step-father,
Al Stenberg, of Holderger, NB.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore, in 1989; her
parents; and two brothers, Floyd Gilbert and Wallace Gilbert.

Madelyn Catherine Staebell (nee) Barnes

Funeral services for Madelyn C. Staebell of Cresco were held at
Monday, October 17, 1994, at Assumption Catholic Church with the Rev.
Michael C. Fitzgerald officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery,
Cresco. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Madelyn died Friday, October 14, 1994, at the Howard County
Hospital in Cresco. She was 88 years of age.

Madelyn Catherine Staebell was born July 25, 1906, near Cresco,
the daughter of Herbert Barnes and Mary Byrnes Barnes.
She attended school in Cresco and attended College of St. Catherine
in St. Paul, MN.

On June 1, 1926, she married Charles Staebell at Cresco. Maddie
and Charlie spent most of their lives in Cresco. For a short period of time
they lived in Houston, TX, Des Moines and Rice Lake, WI, moving back to
Cresco in 1950.

Surviving her are her husband, Charles; one daughter, Nancy.

Survivors include of Cresco; one daughter, Nancy Carolan of St.
Paul, MN; one son, Michael Staebell, of Muskego, WI; five
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was her parents and two brothers,
Herbert Barnes and Edward Barnes.

Sarah Elizabeth Bessie Saywell

Memorial services for Sarah "Bessie" Saywell will be held at 1:30
p.m. Saturday, October 22, 1994, at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Her
ashes will be returned to Manitoba and buried with her parents in
Woodlands Cemetry at Rathwell, Manitoba, Canada.

Sarah Elizabeth "Bessie" Saywell was born April 2, 1904, in
Nottingham, England, the daughter of Frank and Maude Saywell. In 1912,
the Sayewell family emmingrated to British Columia, Canada. They were
scheduled to sail on the Titanic but, family illness prevented that and
they sailed on the Lusitania, which sank on its return voyage. In 1916, the
family moved to Manitoba and in 1919, following her mother's death,
Bessie came to Cresco where she became a part of the Kessel family.
Gertrude Williams and Bessie remained lifelong friends.

During the following years, Bessie took secretarial training and
worked for several doctors in and around Cresco. From 1953 until the
Cresco office closed in 1970, Bessie worked in the County
Superintendant's office.

Bessie is survived by her sister, Winnie Purser of Vancouver,
Canada and a half brother, Gordon of Winnipeg, Canada and many nieces
and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, father, two brothers,
Fran and Harold, and a step sister, Emily. Services to be held ...
In 1912, the Saybnd they sailed on the Lusitania on its
return voyage. In 1916 ... survived Purser of Vancouver,
Canada, ... to sail on the Titanic but ....

Herman A. Rosendahl

Funeral services for Herman A. Rosendahl, 92, of Calmar, were held at
11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 12, 1994, at the Calmar Lutheran Church with
the Rev. Paul Lionberger officiating. Pall bearers were his grandsons,
Bryan Schmitt, Terry Rosendahl, Clari Davis, Michael Oberheu, Mark
Oberheu and Daniel Oberheu. Interment was in the church Cemetery.

Herman died at his home,Monday, October 10, 1994.

Herman A. Rosendahl was born October 14, 1901, the son of
Hans Rosendahl and Emma Hattlestad Rosendahl. He attended
rural Decorah schools and barber school and was a long time
barber in Calmar.

On August 13, 1934, he married Leona Sobolik.

Survivors include his wife, Leona; two daughters, Janice Schmitt of
Cresco and Carolee Oberheu of Denver, IA; one son, Dennis Rosendahl,
of Des Moines; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one
sister, Ellen Jordahl, of Decorah.
Preceding him in death were six brothers and one sister.
Granddaughter, Julie Davis, read a special tribute.

Alma Marie Zahasky

Alma died Thursday, October 20, 1994, at the Allen Memorial Home
in Waterloo after suffering a heart attack. She had donated her body to
medical research at Des Moines.

Alma Marie Zahasky was born September 8, 1909, the daughter of
John Zahasky and Matilda Huber Zahasky. She attended school
at rural Protivin.

On September 24, 1926, she married Charles W. Chyle at Holy
Trinity Church in Protivin. They were married for 62 years before Charles
died in 1988. Two children were born to this union.

Alma worked at Polashek's Meat Market and at Romens Processing.
She also was a housewife and caregiver for her husband's long illness.

Surviving her are her daughter, Olga Chule Jung of Waterloo, five
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, one son,
Herbert Chyle, in 1968, her parents, three sisters, Regina Blackburn,
Zephie Nockles, Viola Woldum and one brother, Edward Zahasky.

Earl R. Waller

Services for Earl Waller of Cresco will be held at 10:30 a.m. today,
Wednesday, October 26, 1994, at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. The
Rev.Wiese will officiate and intement will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery.
Lindstrom Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Earl died at the Cresco Care Center Sunday, October 23, 1994, at
the age of 89.

Earl R. Waller was born at Dysart, IA, December 21, 1904, the eldest
son of Oscar R. and Orpha Waller. The family moved to Howard County
when he was a small child. He attended the rural schools and graduated
from Cresco High School in 1924.

On July 16, 1927, he married Alice Dinger at her parents home. To
this union four children were born.

As a young man he worked for Interstate Power Company as a
lineman and for the Walt Rush Bottling Company. He then decided to
farm and in 1944 he received an award for combining more acres of
soybeans than any other farmer in Howard County. He and Alice farmed
until 1954 when they moved into Cresco. He served on the Cresco police
force for many years until he retired as Chief of Police. He had served
as a school director for many years. Earl worked part-time for the
Bradley- Lindstrom Funeral Home and repaired bicycles for the daily
contact, enjoyment and conversation it provided.

Surviving Earl are his wife of 67 years, Alice; one son,
Dr. Roger Waller, of Nashua; two daughters, Gladys Sovereign
of Cresco and Gayle Freeburg of Scottsdale, AZ; a niece who made
her home with them, Mary Lou Markham of Nashville, TN;
13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one sister,
Irene Anderson of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by one son, E. Russel Waller; his
parents; and two brothers, Ray Waller and one who died as an infant.
