Lester Whetstone

Lester Herman Whetstone, 69, of Burlington died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 15, 1937, in Kewanee, Ill., he was the son of John F. and Ella Ouart Whetstone. On Dec. 31, 1973, he married Susan Baden.

Mr. Whetstone was a career Navy veteran, serving for 21 years. He retired as chief petty officer and later worked at Burlington Northern Railroad until Oct. 15, 1999.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Corvair Connection. His passion was his 1964 Corvair. He was known for his sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Suzanne Rice and Julie Whetstone, both of Atlanta, and Dawn Whetstone of Burlington; two sons, Jon Whetstone of Norfolk, Va., and Mark Whetstone of Gainsville, Texas; 14 grandchildren; and one brother, Raymond Whetstone of Kewanee.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Lunning Chapel, with family meeting friends from 4 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Whetstone will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Carl Engstrom officiating. Military rites will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, and will be conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard of VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton–Walters Marine Corps League and the AMVETS Post 29. Burial will follow in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

L. June Waddle

L. June Waddle, 92, of New London, formerly of Danville, died Sunday, March 12, 2006, at New London Nursing and Rehab Center. Arrangements are pending at Elliott Chapel in New London.

Gerald Buffington

M. Gerald Buffington, 90, of rural Columbus Junction, died Sunday evening, March 12, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Born May 3, 1915, in rural Columbus Junction, he was the son of O.C. and Lois Jennings Buffington. On June 12, 1938, he married Verena Thompson in West Liberty.

Mr. Buffington was a retired farmer, living his entire life on the farm where he was born.

He was a graduate of Wyman High School. He was an 80–year member of Spring Run United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters; Maribeth Nelson of Davenport and Phyllis Close of Zimmerman, Minn.; three sons, Phillip Buffington of Mount Union, Tony Buffington of Winfield and Chris Buffington of Columbus Junction; 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Friday at Honts Funeral Home in Winfield, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Buffington will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Spring Run United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Spring Run United Methodist Church.

Ernest "Junior" Johnson

Ernest "Junior" J. Johnson, 67, of Roseville, Ill., died at 9:57 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at Community Medical Center in Monmouth, Ill.

Born May 14, 1938, in Galesburg, Ill., he was the son of Ernest E. and Jewel T. Turner Johnson. On Jan. 13, 1962, he married Helen J. Armstrong in Monmouth.

Mr. Johnson farmed in the Berwick, Ill., area and for the last 18 years owned and operated Roseville Village Hardware Store.

He lived most of his life in the Berwick and Roseville area. He was a graduate of Roseville High School and served in the National Guard. He was a member of Berwick Baptist Church and Roseville Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Tari J. Lair of Roseville and Jodi Burg of Stronghurst, Ill.; six grandchildren; one brother, Gary Johnson of Little Swan Lake, Ill.; and one sister, Linda Carlberg of Roseville.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Corman Memorial Home in Roseville.

The funeral for Mr. Johnson will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Corman Memorial Home, with the Rev. Jean Hembrough officiating. Burial will be in Roseville Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Swan Creek United Methodist Church.

John Berry

John L. Berry, 84, of Fort Madison, died at 12:25 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at Fort Madison Community Hospital. Arrangements are pending at Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison.

George Allen Shaw

The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. George Allen Shaw, 87, will be 10:00 AM this morning at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as the Celebrant. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Full military honors will be rendered by the Veterans Honor Guard, VFW Posts 10102, 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton–Walters Marine Corps League, and AMVETS Post 29. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery . A memorial has been established for West Burlington Christian Church Primetime.

Esther V. Lyon

The funeral service for Mrs. Esther V. Lyon, 95, who died Saturday, March 11, 2006 will be Thursday, March 16th at 1:30 PM in Lunning Chapel. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery . Friends may call after noon Wednesday in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A memorial has been established.

Esther Lyon

Esther V. Lyon, 95, of Norwalk, formerly of Burlington, died at 11:15 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2006, at Norwalk Regency Care.

Born Nov. 2, 1910, in Lowell, she was the daughter of William A. and Mary Elizabeth Williamson Kirkpatrick. On Dec. 3, 1932, she married Johnie Leroy Lyon in Kahoka, Mo. He died March 15, 1988.

Mrs. Lyon was a homemaker and worked in housekeeping for Elm View Care Center, retiring in 1976.

She loved to embroider and continued her stitch work past the age of 90.

Survivors include three daughters, Macil Marie Hiatt of Humeston, Opal Mae Young of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Leona Irene Laybon of Norwalk; one son, Donald Lee Lyon of Wheatfield, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and several great–grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Lyon will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Randall Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

John Bruyn

John E. Bruyn, 81, of Terre Haute, Ill., died at 5:25 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst, Ill.

Born April 17, 1924, in Monmouth, Ill., he was the son of Earl and Clara Skidmore Bruyn. On Aug. 7, 1943, he married Helen Peterson in Monmouth.

Mr. Bruyn farmed near Monmouth until 1964 at which time he moved to Terre Haute, where he farmed for C.E. Neff until 1972. He then served as Terre Haute Township Road commissioner until retiring in 1996.

He was a graduate of Monmouth High School. He was a member of the Terre Haute Fire Department for 27 years, served as a Henderson County Auxiliary Police officer and was a member of Terre Haute United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Jennifer Painter of Terre Haute; one son, Rodger Bruyn of Princeton, Ill.; seven grandchildren; 13 great–grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Bruyn of Monmouth; and one sister, Frances Armstrong of San Diego.

He was preceded in death by one son, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, Ill.

The funeral for Mr. Bruyn will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home, with the Rev. Diane Bigley officiating. Burial will be in Terre Haute Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Terre Haute United Methodist Church and Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab.

Marjorie Graber

Marjorie Helen Graber, 82, of Wayland, died Saturday, March 11, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. There will be no family visitation.

There will be a family service for relatives at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. Burial will be in Sugar Creek Cemetery.

The celebration of life memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. Memorials have been established for Crooked Creek Camp, the Sugar Creek Mennonite Library and the Mennonite Women.

Pearl Marie Andrew

The Graveside Committal Service and Interment for Mrs. Pearl Marie Andrew, 88, will be at 2:00 PM this afternoon in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Jer–ry K. Olson officiating. Visitation will be from 8:00 AM today at the Hass–Thielen Funeral Home until 1:00 PM. There will be no family visitation. Clarence Chockley

Clarence William Chockley, 96, of Carthage, Ill., died at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at North Adams Home in Mendon, Ill.

Born Jan. 21, 1906, in Ray, Ill., he was the son of Henry Elmore and Mary Magdelene Kelly Chockley. He married Irene Russell on Nov. 12, 1931, in Carlisle, Ill.
Mr. Chockley farmed in the Augusta, Rushville and Clayton, Ill., areas. After retiring, he moved to Golden, Ill., where he ran a lawn mower repair shop for more than 15 years. He moved to Carthage in 1980.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Carthage and was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mary Twaddle of Carthage and June Hendrickson of Ursa, Ill.; one son, Richard Chockley of Stronghurst, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, one grandson, three brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Neiser-Printy Funeral Home in Carthage, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The graveside service for Mr. Chockley will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Woodlawn Cemetery in Augusta, Ill.

A memorial has been established for Woodlawn Cemetery or a charity of the donor's choice.
