Virginia Putnam

PUTNAM (LONG), VIRGINIA B. – age 83, of Burlington, IA, devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, November 16, 2006. Virginia married Leroy E. Putnam on October 25, 1942 and celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this year.

She was a lifelong member of Oak Street Baptist Church. Virginia served on many church committees and enjoyed delivering flowers and service tapes to those who could not attend church. She worked for many years at Long's Grocery (which was owned by her Mother, Minnie (Schulz) Long and was also employed by both AT&T and JI Case Company. Virginia spent years by her husband's side with their business, Auto Body Company. Above all, Virginia was dedicated to her family, who loved her as dearly as she loved them. She always had a new picture and story to share about one of her children or grandchildren. Her family, friends and home were always at the center of her life. She had grace, dignity and optimism, which she maintained even throughout her struggle with her health over the past few years. Her smile will be remembered by all who came to know her, as it was very special. She was preceded in death by her Father; Harry Long, her Mother; Minnie (Schulz) Long, and her brother Harry Long, Junior. Survivors include her devoted husband of sixty–four years, Leroy E. Putnam of Burlington, children and their spouses; Gary and LaDonna Putnam of Burlington, IA, Jerry and Susan Putnam of Oklahoma City, OK; James Putnam of Burlington, IA and Jayne and Jim Burritt of Knoxville, TN. Grandchildren, Ryan Putnam, Kansas City, MO; David Putnam (Tabitha Hunter), Davenport, IA; Andrea Burritt, Knoxville, TN; Adam (Kim) Burritt, Cedar Rapids, IA; Patrick Burritt, Knoxville, TN; and Lee Putnam Jr. of Burlington, IA. Great Grandchildren, Emma and Hayden of Davenport, IA and Megan of Cedar Rapids, IA.

Friends may call from noon until 8:00 p.m. today in Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service time of 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 18th, in Lunning Chapel, Burlington, IA. The Rev. Jason Unzicker will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Memorials have been established for Oak Street Baptist Church and Juvenile Diabetes Association.

Roger King

Roger L. King, 21, of Monmouth, Ill., died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Arrangements are pending at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth.

James Ringling

James Conway Ringling, 78, of Fort Madison, died at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Fort Madison Health Center.

Born Dec. 31, 1925, in Munich, Germany, he was the son of Robert Edward and Virginia Sullivan Ringling. He married Aileen Mustell in Chicago.

Mr. Ringling worked for Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. He began as a ticket office clerk and by 1963, when he retired, he was vice president, scheduling dates and seasons for the show.

He was the third generation of the Ringling Brother Circus family, the grandson of Charles Edward Ringling, one of the founding brothers. He graduated from Loyola University at Chicago with a bachelor's of science degree in chemistry. He was a member of Ss. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Madison.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Charles Ringling of Bradenton, Fla., and Christopher Ringling of Miliani, Hawaii; one daughter, Lucretia Ringling of Texas; four grandchildren; one great–grandchild; one brother, Charles Ringling of Texas, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison, with family present from 7 to 8 p.m. and a Christian wake service at 7:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Ringling will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ss. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Parlette officiating. A private burial will be at the family mausoleum out of state.

A memorial has been established. Contributions may be left at Barr Memorial Chapel.

Dallas Scott

The Mass of Christian Burial for Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Dallas Scott, 29, will be Saturday, December 11th, at 10:00 AM in St. John's Catholic Church. The Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf will be the celebrant. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery , Kingston. The U.S. Coast Guard Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites. Friends may call after 8:00 AM on Friday, December 10th, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 PM. A memorial has been established.

Donna R. Peebler

The funeral service for Mrs. Donna Rose Peebler, 74, who died Friday, December 3, 2004, will be Wednesday, December 8th, at 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel. Pastor Dean Moberg will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 8:00 AM today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends following Eastern Star Services at 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A memorial has been established.

Eloise I. Taylor

The funeral services for Mrs. Eloise I. Taylor, 88, who died Monday, December 6, 2004, is pending in Lunning Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the donor's choice.

Ronald Hoover

Ronald Edward "Hoov" Hoover, 59, of Lockridge, died at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at his home.

Born Sept. 19, 1945, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Walter Joseph and Pearl Arlene "Connie" DeWitt Hoover. On Nov. 12, 1966, he married Judith Ann Simpkins in Mount Pleasant.

Mr. Hoover worked for White's Floor Covering of Mount Pleasant following high school graduation. He then began working in the sheet metal field for more than 35 years. He worked with sheet metal for Acco–Bobcock–Louden Machinery in Fairfield. He then was employed by the former Vega Industries in Mount Pleasant. He was briefly self–employed in sheet metal before he returned to Vega after it had become Heatilator. He worked for Heatilator until his health forced him to retire.

He was a 1963 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, where he attended mechanical draftsman technical school and received his certification. He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. He was a former member of the Lockridge Lions Club. For eight years he served on the Lockridge City Council. He had also been a coach for the Lockridge Little League Baseball team. He loved to follow the St. Louis Cardinals, NASCAR and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Kristina Dunning of Washington, Jacqueline Canaday of Davenport and Sonja Hoover of Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren; one brother, Rodney Hoover of Trenton; three sisters, Kathy Messer of Williford, Ark., and Janet Ensminger and Mary Ann Smith, both of Mount Pleasant.

Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. today at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant and from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Gathering Space of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 and the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral Mass for Mr. Hoover will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Nicholas J. Adam officiating. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the H2O program, Hospice of Central Iowa and St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.

Dennis Scheideman

Dennis E. Scheideman, 61, of Burlington, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport.

Born Jan. 15, 1940, in Burlington, he was the son of Edwin and Ruth Barrett Scheideman. He married Joyce Schnicker on Nov. 23, 1966, in Burlington.
Mr. Scheideman was a 1958 graduate of Burlington High School and a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from 1963 to 1965. He worked as a printer at The Hawk Eye for 42 years, retiring in December.

He was a member of First Christian Church, where he served as a deacon and usher. He was secretary/treasurer of Typographical Union 75 and past president of Burlington Hawk-Eye Employees Credit Union. He loved traveling, yard work, gardening and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Steven Scheideman of Blaine, Wash., and Greg Scheideman of Des Moines; one grandson; and his mother, of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church, where the family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10 a.m.

The memorial funeral service for Mr. Scheideman will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Revs. David Nash and Tom L. Smith officiating. Inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for his church.

Patricia Adams

Patricia Ann Roark Adams, 53, of Rolla, Mo., died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, in St. Louis.

Born May 23, 1948, in St. James, Mo., she was the daughter of Robert W. and Elsie Pierce Roark. She married Jesse Adams.
Mrs. Adams was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

Survivors include her mother, Elsie Roark Garcia; two daughters, Jessica Atkins of Rolla, Mo., and Mary Brown of Arnold, Mo.; six grandchildren; five brothers, Gene Roark of Gladstone, Ill., Nick Roark of Media, Ill., Ed Roark Heckelthorn and Robert Roark, both of St. James, and Wesley Roark Heckelthorn of Dallas City, Ill.; and two sisters, DnetteButler of Rolla and Mary Lou Roark Williams of Belle, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her father, one daughter, four brothers, one sister and two grandchildren.

The funeral for Mrs. Adams will be at 2:30 p.m. today at James & Gahr Chapel in Rolla, Mo., with Mick Thrasher officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Adams Cemetery in rural Phelps County, Mo.

James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Williams

Ruth A. Williams, 81, of rural Stronghurst, Ill., died at 12:41 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 23, 1920, in West Burlington, she was the daughter of H. Bertrum and M. Belle Cornick Coe. She married Merl Williams on Feb. 8, 1959, in Jefferson. He died Jan. 28, 2001.
Mrs. Williams worked as a bookkeeper for the Twomey Company for many years.

She was a member of Stronghurst United Methodist Church and its Women's Society.

She is survived by her daughter, Sarah E. Williams of Macomb, Ill.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by twin daughters, three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Williams will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Stronghurst United Methodist Church, with the Rev. George Knox officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.

Memorials have been established for her church and the Henderson County Heart Fund.

Theresa Modaff

Theresa Modaff, 89, of Burlington died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Great River Medical Center's Klein Center.

Born Dec. 14, 1915, in Aurora, Ill., she was the daughter of Frank and Sophia Okapal. In 1942 she married Jim Modaff in Aurora. He died in 1997.

Mrs. Modaff enjoyed reading, gardening, home decorating and traveling. She became an accomplished artist/potter and businesswoman after raising her children. She and her husband traveled and lived in many areas of the United States before settling in Burlington in the early 1980s.

Survivors include four daughters, Kathleen Smith of Brooklyn Center, Minn., Mary Modaff of Tuscan, Ariz., Beth Oldfield of Burlington and Maggie Modaff of Estes Park, Colo.; two sons, James Modaff of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jeff Modaff of Irvine, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great–grandchildren; one brother, John Okapal of Sandwich, Ill.; and one sister, Dorothy Nicholson of Long Beach, Calif.

According to Mrs. Modaff's wishes, her body will be cremated and there will be no visitation or funeral service. A commemorative celebration will be in August at a family reunion in Minnesota.

A memorial has been established.

Hass–Thielen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Otto Ensminger

Otto Galvarous Ensminger, 92, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Salem and Lombard, Ill., died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Sept. 30, 1912, in West Point, Ill., he was the son of Walter Thomas and Ethel Caroline Wiedmeyer Ensminger. On July 17, 1943, he married Wanda Ducoff. She preceded him in death.

Mr. Ensminger served in the Navy for many years, retiring in 1964 as a lieutenant commander. He then became an industrial arts instructor at Lincoln Junior High School in Berwyn, Ill.

He grew up in the West Point and Stillwell, Ill., areas and later graduated from Salem High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Iowa Wesleyan College and then obtained a bachelor of arts degree in education from Northern Illinois University. He was a member of the Lapidary Club of Lombard and the Men's Garden Club of Villa Park, Ill. He also enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include one son, Walt Ensminger of Randolph, N.J.; two grandchildren; and three sisters, Thelma Foss and Almeta Simkin, both of Salem, and Esther Agee of Iowa and Arizona.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter and one brother.

There will be no visitation.

A private family graveside service for Mr. Ensminger will be Saturday in Salem East Cemetery , with the Rev. Harold Dorsey, pastor of the Salem Congregational Church, officiating.

Olson–Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant is in charge of arrangements.

Lucille White

Lucille White, 95, of Burlington died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Prairie Ridge Rehab Center in Mediapolis. Arrangements are pending at Lunning Chapel.

Howard Tatman

Howard J. "Shorty" Tatman, 70, of Monmouth, Ill., died at 8 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at LaMoine Christian Nursing Home in Roseville, Ill. Arrangements are pending at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth.
