Mildred Louise Taylor, age 66, of Grinnell and formerly of Robinson County, North Carolina, died Monday, May 3, 2004 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. A funeral service for Mildred will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 8, at Welcome Holiness Church in rural Robison County, North Carolina. Friends may call at the Boles Funeral Home in Red Springs, North Carolina beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 7th. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be directed to the Mildred Taylor Memorial Fund. Mildred was born the daughter of Walter and Beulah Mae Clark Thompson on December 12, 1937 in rural Robison County, North Carolina. She was raised and educated in Robison County. Mildred was united in marriage to James S. Taylor on September 3, 1955 in Dillon, South Carolina. To this union a son, James, Jr., and three daughters, Pam, Mary, and Olin were born. Mildred enjoyed sewing, cooking, singing, and listening to gospel music. She found God at the Welcome Holiness Church. She loved to make people laugh and was thought of as the life of the party. Young people enjoyed her presence and comfort. It touched her heart to be called 'grandma' by many. She adored her great grandson-in-law Eric 'Bubba.' Mildred is survived by her son, James Taylor, Jr. of Robison County, North Carolina; her daughters, Pam Taylor of Grinnell, Iowa, Mary Hammonds of Robison County, North Carolina, and Olin Renae Taylor of Robison County, North Carolina; her nine grandchildren; her fifteen great grandchildren; her brothers, George Thompson of Robison County, North Carolina, John C. Thompson of Baltimore, Maryland; her sisters, Jerline Adams of Elkton Merlin, Maryland, Allene Thompson of Robison County, North Carolina, Glenda Thompson of Robison County, North Carolina, and Arlene Thompson of California. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband James Taylor in 1988; her brothers, Walter Thompson, and Early Thompson; her sister, Lillian Locklear.

Clarence Cogley, age 72, of Grinnell, passed away Tuesday, May 25th at Grinnell Regional Medical Center of injuries he sustained in a farm accident that occurred on October 1, 2003. A funeral service for Clarence will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Malcom with Rev. Herb Knudten presiding. Casket bearers will be Mark Dimit, Dave Ferneau, Ken McMains, Doug Mikel, Dale Moyer, and Don Stoker. Interment will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, with the family being present from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday evening. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Clarence was born the son of John and Clara Figland Cogley on June 25, 1931 in Grinnell, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm northeast of Grinnell and educated at Sheridan Township rural school. Clarence graduated with the Grinnell High School class of 1949. Following his education, he served in the United States Navy for four years, spending three years in the Philippines during the Korean War. Clarence was united in marriage to JoAnn Lidtka on March 24, 1956 and to this union one son Mike, and two daughters, Cathy and Melissa were born. Clarence was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Grinnell Eagles Club, the Elks Lodge, and served on the former Malcom Elevator board and Trinity Lutheran Church council. Clarence enjoyed traveling throughout his life. Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Alaska were just a few of his favorite destinations. He also enjoyed spending the last few winters in Arizona. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed sharing these activities with his grandson Cale. He took pride in his team of Belgians. He hosted many hay rides in the summer and bobsled rides in the winter. Most of all, Clarence enjoyed his grandchildren, Cale and Skye Puls, and Jonathan “Jack” Goedken. His family remembered him as one who taught the values and rewards of hard work. He was considered strong yet sensitive. He took pride in being a generous man and a good friend to many. Clarence was known for his quick wit and he always made sure that everyone was having a good time. Clarence is survived by his wife JoAnn; his children, Mike of Portland, Oregon, Cathy and her husband Dale Puls of Grinnell, and Melissa and her husband Scott Goedken of Swisher, Iowa; his grandchildren, Cale and Skye Puls of Grinnell, and Jonathan “Jack” Goedken of Swisher, Iowa; his three brothers, Dr. Keith Cogley of Colfax, Iowa, Dr. Allen Cogley of Jefferson City, Tennessee, Dr. Roy Cogley of Green Valley, Arizona; his eight sisters, Betty Bryan of Davenport, Iowa, Eleanor Mason of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Bernice Mithelman of Grinnell, Avis Kelm of Grinnell, Joan Hopkinson of Savannah, Georgia, Barbara Danskin of Scottsdale, Arizona, Marilyn Copeland of Jefferson, Iowa, and Pat Lang of Grinnell. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother Jim in August of 1991.

Mr. Tanner was born on December 1, 1910, near Genoa Bluff in Iowa County, Iowa to Thomas and Jennie Shedenhelm Tanner. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural school. Following his education he began his career in farming. He also became interested in boxing and participated in boxing matches in the area. On April 9, 1932, he was married to Hazel May Freeze in Ladora. The couple lived southeast of Ladora and operated a grain and livestock farm. They moved into Ladora in 1947 and he continued to farm and he recruited livestock business for the Belle Plaine Sale Barn. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Ladora and the Farm Bureau. He was formerly a member of the Ladora School Board and he was instrumental in the planning and construction of the Ladora school gym. Survivors include his children and their spouses, Gary and Rose Tanner of rural Victor, Jerry and Judy Tanner of Marengo and Betty and Art Fudge of Edgewood, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and six sisters, Esther Erickson, Edna Dietrich, Gladys Leimberer, Thelma Houck, Harriet Adcock and Correne Law.

The daugher of Burton and Sarah Rinker Van Pelt, she was born February 16, 1922, in Beaver, Iowa. She was raised and educated in Ogden and Boone and later recieved a B.A. degree from U.N.I. in social work. She was married to Emil Beran August 4, 1940, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa and the couple made their home in Waterloo where she was employed at Waterloo West High School. She later moved to Des Moines in 1978 and was employed at Wesley Acres as a social worker and then as an office manager at a radio station for the blind. She retired in 1995 and moved to Searsboro prior to moving to Grinnell in 1997. She is survived by four children, Penny Adams of Montezuma, Pam Niederhauser of Columbia, Missouri, Pat Barnes of Davenport and Tom Beran of Palm Springs, California; two sisters, Evanelle Erickson of Boone and Aletha Harten of Ogden; eleven grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; and five sisters. Memorial contributions may be directed towards Grinnell Regional Hospice.

The daughter of Lewis Clarke and Gracie Fleming Beeler, she was born October 30, 1913, in Washington Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa. She attended rural school and was a 1931 graduate of Grinnell High School. She received her teaching certificate at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1933. She returned to Grinnell and taught in rural schools until 1937. She was married to Laverne A. Kline June 3, 1937, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple lived in Rock Island, Illinois prior to moving to a farm southeast of Grinnell in 1942. She moved to Grinnell in 1984. She was employed at Wood, Wax & Paper in Grinnell and later Smith Funeral Home as their receptionist. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Grinnell and most recently attended Grinnell Christian Church. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Barb Kline of Grinnell; two grandchildren, Larry Kline of Montezuma and Debbie Smith of Eagle Grove; and two great-grandchildren, Ryan Smith of Eagle Grove and Kayla Johnson of Montezuma. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

She was born on May 23, 1916, in Grinnell, Iowa to Dow and Maude Mahaffey. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School. Following her marriage to George Schmidt the couple operated a grain and livestock farm southeast of Grinnell. After the death of her husband, she was married to Verne Reeves on February 7, 1964. The couple remained on the Schmidt family farm and she worked in the food service of Grinnell College. In the early 1980s she moved to Grinnell and resided at Monroe Park. Survivors include her three sons, John, Jim and Jack Schmidt, all of Grinnell; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands; one son, Joe Schmidt; one grandchild; one great grandson; and three sisters, Loretta Clark, Metta Maron and Martha.

Carrol was born October 8, 1916, in Genoa Bluff, Iowa the youngest of 10 children of Charles and Mary Meier Haman. He was raised and attended rural school near Genoa Bluff. He was married to Onla Sloan February 1, 1946, in Cedar Rapids. The couple lived near Marengo and he was employed as a mechanic at Haman Garage in Genoa Bluff and later at Amana Refrigeration. He is survived by two children, David Haman of Des Moines and Kayla (Bill) Sloan of Marion; two grandchildren, Caroline (Bob) Pester of Des Moines and Kevin Sloan of Marion; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew Pester of Des Moines; one sister, Rose Shullof Ladora; and five sisters-in-law, Helen Haman of Marengo, Mary Brown of Belle Plaine, Brownie Mumby of Marengo, Marlene Sloan of Victor, and Irene Sloan of Altoona. He was preceded in death by his wife, Onla; his parents; four brothers, John, George, Henry and Lawrence; and four sisters, Martha Wyant, Clara Hawkins, Mabel Van Blaricom and Alma Weaver.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the infantry in the South Pacific during World War II.

He is survived by one son, Floyd Doty of rural Brooklyn; three grandsons; six great grandchildren; and one sister, Lois Van Ersvelde of Brooklyn. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and two brothers, Melvin and Rolland Doty.

He was born on June 12, 1912, in Brooklyn, Iowa to Forrest and Nola Tinker Doty. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural schools. In 1930, he graduated from Brooklyn High School. On March 18, 1937, he was married to Frances E. Richman at her parent’s home in Brooklyn. The couple farmed in Bear Creek Township and Madison Township before moving to a farm near Malcom in 1949. They operated their farming operation near Malcom until they retired in 1974. Following their retirement they lived in Brooklyn until 1997 when they moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell. The couple loved to travel during their retirement years. Australia, Alaska and Europe made up a few of their travel destinations. On these trips, they would take numerous pictures and would return to share and educate many organizations and friends with their slide show presentations. The couple enjoyed spending their winter months in Texas and did so for 21 years.

He was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and a former member of the Brooklyn United Methodist Church and the Brooklyn Kiwanis Club. He was a former member of the Malcom Board of Education and a 50-year member of the Farm Bureau. He was named “Master Swine Producer” by the Wallace Farm magazine and was awarded the top Soil Conservation Award in his Iowa district.

Lillian Galbreath

Lillian Ahrendt Galbreath was born to German immigrant parents, Dora and Theodore, on August 16, 1898, in Luverne, Minnesota. She died on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 of congestive heart failure at the Mayflower Health Care Center in Grinnell, Iowa. She was 105 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, King, in 1970 and by her only son, Dale, in 1994. She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Meyers, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. True to her heritage, Lillian’s life was characterized by hard work, frugality, and efficiency. In the late 1920’s Lil and her husband bought and operated Hotel Oxford in Traer, Iowa. During the Depression of the 30’s, she clerked in a ladies’ store, all the while maintaining a spotless home and providing nutritious, yet economical meals. She was a marvelous cook. By her own admission, Lillian was a gypsy. She loved to travel. During her 15-year residency in California, she traveled many times, to many places, with her son Dale and his family. Playing bridge, which she did with great skill, was an important pastime, too. Her years in California were the happiest of her life; her friends and family there were her great joy. In 1991, she moved to Minnesota to be close to Dorothy and her family. Although her German Lutheran education ended after 6th grade, Lil maintained her curiosity and need-to-know. She enjoyed TV and radio news and opinion shows. Keenly interested in politics, she was a true conservative. Her good mind, which she maintained almost to the end, was a major blessing to her and to those who knew and loved her. She was unique.

The son of Alphonse and Helen LaKose Thys, Leonard was born May 1, 1921, in Honey Creek Township, Iowa County, Iowa. He was raised in the area and was a 1939 graduate of Hartwick High School. Leonard was married to Marguerite Peggy Fitzgerald on February 9, 1944, at St. Michael Catholic church in Belle Plaine. The couple farmed with Leonard's parents north of Victor. they later purchased the farm and continued farming until 1977 when they retired and moved to Victor. Although retired, he remained active the farming. Leonard was a retired member of the Hartwick Fire Department with 14 years of service, a 4th Degree member of the Victor Knights of Columbus, an Iowa County A.S.C.S. Committe man for approximately 9 yars where he served as chairman, and a member of the Iowa County Board of Supervisors for 8 years. He served on the Iowa county Mental Health Board and was an Iowa County Civil Defense Volunteer. He was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church where he served as lector and was a CCD teacher for many years. As a result of his farming practices, he received many conservation awards. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and dancing. He also enjoyed a good cribbage game and like to watch baseball. Survivors include is children, Judy Sloan of Cedar Rapids, Joan Doran of Victor, Kathy Rashid of Merritt Island, Florida, Jim "Carp" Thys of Victor and Ray Thys of Marion; a special fried, Pear Conant of Tipton; one brother and sister, Richard Thys of Belle Plaine and Margaret DeMeulenaere of Brooklyn; 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Leonard died July 7, 2004, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, at the age of 83. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marguerite "Peggy"; one daughter, Luann Marie Thys, who died at the age of 2; and one grandson, Doug Doran, who died at the age of 26.

William E. Landon, age 77, of Williamsburg, died Thursday, July 22nd at his home. A funeral service for William Landon will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 26 at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor with Rev. Ronald Jewett officiating. Casket bearers will be Ted Blofeld, Charles Cronbaugh, Curtis Cronbaugh, Adam Downs, Steve Huedepohl, Grant Landon, Matt Landon, and John Van Rentergham. Interment will follow at Hartwick Cemetery with military rites. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor beginning at 12 noon on Sunday, where the family will be present from 6 – 8 p.m. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be directed to the William E. Landon Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home in Victor. William was born the son of William and Sicela Martin Landon on September 4, 1926 in Mountain Lake Park, Maryland. He was raised and educated in Mountain Lake Park and was a graduate with the 1942 Oakland High School class in Oakland, Maryland. Following his education, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the Navy for twenty-three years of his life and attained a Lieutenant’s rank. Following his service with the United States Navy, he was an employee of Ace Federal Reporters in Washington D.C. from 1967 - 1979. He then was employed with Petersen Court Reporters of Des Moines, Iowa from 1979 - 2002. William and his family moved to Iowa in 1974. William was united in marriage to Marilyn Ann Torrance of Grinnell on May 15, 1945 in Galveston, Texas. To this union were born four children: William “Sam,” Leigh Anne, Scott, and Paul. William enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader and stamp collector. He was also one who wrote many poems. His family described him as a family man, who would travel many hours to watch his grandchildren’s activities. He enjoyed staying up to date on current events and debating these events with family and friends. William is survived by his wife Marilyn of Brooklyn; his daughter Leigh Anne Downs and her husband Randy of St. Charles, Missouri; his sons Scott Landon and his wife Toni of Burlington, Iowa, and Paul Landon of Des Moines, Iowa; his six grandchildren; his two great grandchildren; his brothers Charles Landon of Crownsville, Ohio, and Robert Landon of Friendsville, Maryland. William was preceded in death by his parents; his son William “Sam” in 1973; and his sister Mary Betty Landon in 2002.

He was born on March 1, 1925, in Victor, Iowa to William and Winona Nace Refer. He was raised in Victor and graduated with the Class of 1942 from Victor High School. Following his education he served with the United States Navy on the USS Price in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. Following the war, he returned to Victor and worked for the McAnnich Furniture Store and the McAnnich Funeral Home. In 1951, he began a 39 year career with Amana Refrigeration, serving as a method engineer. After his retirement he assisted the Smith Funeral Home in Victor. He was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church of Victor and the church choir, the American Legion, the Victor Fire Department, and the Knights of Columbus. He was a charter member of the HLV Booster Club, the Amana Employees Retirement Group and a past director of the Cooperative Telephone Company of Victor. Survivors include his wife, Rosie Refer of Victor; and his son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Joyce Refer of Victor; two grandchildren, Sara and Eric Refer, both of Victor; his two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Refer of Victor and Ruth Wright of Urbandale; and two brothers-in-law, Jim DeDecker of Orion, Illinois and Jerry DeDecker of West Des Moines, Iowa. A scripture service will be held 7:00 p.m., Friday, at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor. Memorials may be directed to the Donald Refer Memorial Fund and sent in care of Rosie Refer, 602 Franklin Street, Victor, Iowa, 52347.
