She was born on June 12, 1920 on the family farm near Chelsea, Iowa to Clifford and Adra Metz Ryan. She was raised on the family farm, attended rural school and graduated from Brooklyn High School with the Class of 1938. On September 25, 1940, she was married to John Krumm at her parent's home. The couple farmed near Chelsea and in 1948 the purchased a farm north of Brooklyn. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband with the operation of the farm. They moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 1998 and they have resided at the Mayflower Home in Grinnell since November of 2000. During the winters they lived in Mesa, Arizona. Mrs. Krumm was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Brooklyn and the Church Women United. She was also a member of Emanon, the Pythian Sisters and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed working with her husband, her church work, square dancing, singing, quilting and neighborhood card parties. Survivors include her husband, John Krumm of Grinnell; five daughters and their spouses, Joan (Mike) Runyon of Albia, Anedra (Lowell) Sherwood of Brooklyn, Linda (John) Ryal of Cedar Rapids, Renita (Doug) Meredith of Suwanee, Georgia and Deanna (Bob) Barnes of Elkhorn, Nebraska; 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; and one brother, Raymond Ryan of Chelsea. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Chester M. Jones, 86, of Grinnell and formerly a long-time resident of Jasper County, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, of cancer in the Monarch Hospice Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Funeral services for Mr. Jones will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2004, at the Grinnell Christian Church with the Rev. John Epperson officiating. Organist will be Marlene Toney and vocalist will be Roger Kendall. Pallbearers will be Matt, Mike and Paul Abbott, Ron and Steve Brown, and Deny Downing. A private family burial will follow at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Jasper County, Grinnell Christian Church or Grinnell Regional Hospice. The son of Ralph and Iva Cater Jones, he was born September 13, 1917, in Pangburn, Arkansas. He grew up in Arkansas, Missouri and Iowa and attended country schools in Iowa. He worked for Douglas Aircraft in California during World War II and returned to Iowa following the war. He was involved in farming and various other occupations until the late 1940’s when he worked in the tile drainage business. In 1959, he started his own business in underground water management and soil conservation which he loved, and worked until his retirement in 2002. He was married to Dorothy Benesh in March of 1938 and the couple made their home in several communities in Iowa prior to moving to Newton. They were later divorced and he married Jolene Abbott Downing April 30, 1967, in Moberly, Missouri. The couple purchased a farm north of Kellogg and resided there until December of 2003 when thy moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell. He was active in Land Improvement Contractors Association for several years and was a member of the Grinnell Christian Church. Survivors include his wife, Jolene of Grinnell; three daughters, Maretta Grattan of Grinnell, Vy Dean Christianson of Rapid City, South Dakota and Tommilu Wahrman of Deerfield Beach, Florida; two sons, Wayne Jones of LaCrosse, Wisconsin and Clifford Stanley Downing of Kellogg; two sisters, Alma Sweger of Rockford, Illinois and Shirley Howk of LaMars, Iowa; one brother, Clyde Haines of Tampa, Florida; fourteen grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one daughter, Norlene Williams.

SMITH FUNERAL HOME In Memoriam: Mary Louise Keenan Dusterhoft was born May 5, 1906 to James and Mary Keenan in rural Grinnell. She was raised on the family farm near Lynnville and educated in Grinnell. Mary graduated with Grinnell High School class of 1924. Mary began working for Swift and Company following her education. She was united in marriage to Clarence Dusterhoft on February 12, 1929 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell. To their marriage of over fifty-one years, two sons, George and Steven, and two daughters, Mary Aliene and Marguerite, were born. Following their marriage they established their home on the family farm south of Victor where they resided until 1954 when they moved into Victor. Mary and Clarence retired from farming and continued to reside in Victor. She worked for Rohrer Brothers in Victor as a bookkeeper during this time. She was an active member of the St. Bridget Altar and Rosary Society. Her family described her as an excellent cook, who would always leave an extra plate on the table just in case. She also spent her time gardening, while enjoying her favorite rose flower. She was well known for her delicate and arduous process of tatting. Her family will remember her as a special and loving mother and grandmother. Mary is survived by her son, George and his wife Norma Dusterhoft of Cape Coral, Florida; her daughters, Mary Aliene Sadler and her husband Dick of Casper, Wyoming, and Marguerite Wichmann and her husband Charles of Dubuque, Iowa; her daughter-in-law, Sue Dusterhoft of Lone Tree, Iowa; her grandchildren, Judy David, Kathy Meyer, John Wichmann, Dennis Wichmann, Jason Dusterhoft, Brian Dusterhoft, Ed Sadler, Dick Sadler, Connie Sadler, Ronnie Dusterhoft, Mark Dusterhoft, Tom Dusterhoft, and Julie Kretzschman; and several great grandchildren. Mary passed away quietly on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Lantern Park Nursing Home in Coralville, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Clarence; her son Paul in 1999; and her brothers Jimmy, Leo, and Bill Keenan.

Raymond G. Ziegenmeyer, 82, of Grinnell died Sunday, August 1, 2004, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services for Mr. Ziegenmeyer were held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 4, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Raymond Lott, retired, officiating. Organist was Teresa Ziegenmeyer and soloist was Milton Severe. Pallbearers were Erin McDaniel, Carolyn Plue, Sandi Riemenschneider, Julie and Robin Swank, and Charles, Daniel and James Ziegenmeyer. Honorary bearers were Justin and Zachary Plue, Jim Sage, and Alida, Ben, Carl, Carleys, Eric, Jonathan, Joshua, Kristen, Matthew, Nick, Steve, and Thomas Ziegenmeyer. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Raymond G. Ziegenmeyer Memorial Fund. The son of Otto and Esther McCosh Ziegenmeyer, he was born December 2, 1921, in Blue Earth Minnesota. He moved with his family several years later to a farm south of Grinnell and was a 1939 graduate of Grinnell High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and served with the 324th as a belly gunner on a B-24. His campaigns included Naples-Foggia, Sicily, and Ploesti while being stationed in North Africa and England. He was the recipient of three air medals with oak clusters, two commendations, two distinguished flying medals and four bronze stars. He was married to Mabel Plum on December 24, 1941, in Grinnell. He was employed as a welder for his father-in-law and later purchased the business in 1947. He had serviced the Grinnell area for nearly 60 years. He was a member of the Grinnell American Legion, serving as commander twice, a past member of the 40 & 8, and was awarded a “Leave It Better Than You Found It” certificate. Survivors include his wife, Mabel of Grinnell; three children, James of Marshfield, MA, Sandi Riemenschneider of Marshalltown and Carolyn Plue of Landover Hills, Maryland; one brother, Charles of Grinnell; one sister, Margaret Schmitz of St. Louis, six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Max.

The daughter of Charles H. and Harriet Garretson Goodrich, Olevia was born March 11, 1914 near Malcom, Iowa. She attended rural schools and went to Malcom High School, where she played baseball, basketball, and track. Olevia graduated with the Brooklyn High School class of 1931, where she received her teaching certificate. Olevia was united in marriage to Earl L. Lidtka on January 12, 1934. The couple farmed for many years on the place where she still had made her home. She enjoyed the outdoors, working in her flower beds and garden, and helping her husband on the farm. Olevia was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, serving on the Altar Guild and being a Sunday and Vacation Bible school teacher for many years. She was also a member of the Sheridan Welcome In Club. Olevia is survived by her son Randall Lidtka and his wife Deb of Grinnell; her four daughters, JoAnn Cogley of Grinnell, Marilyn Vogt and her husband Bob of Grinnell, Eleanor Snook and her husband Eldon of Montezuma, and Dolores Eagle and her husband Ron of Marshalltown; her sixteen grandchildren; her twenty-four great grandchildren; her several nieces and nephews; and her brother, Lotus Goodrich of Malcom. Olevia died Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. She was ninety years of age and was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Earl in 1993; her brothers, Virgil Goodrich, Marion Goodrich, Charles Goodrich, and Carroll Eugene Goodrich, who died in infancy; her sister, Xavie Richman; her half sister, Viola Heath; and her son-in-law, Clarence Cogley.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Selma C. Kuhnle Memorial Fund. The daughter of John C. and Emma L. Bollenbacher Conrad, she was born June 7, 1913, in Sumner Township, Iowa County, Iowa. She was raised in Sumner Township and received her education in country schools near her home. She was married to Edwin H. Kuhnle February 23, 1933, at the Trinity Lutheran parsonage at Conroy, Iowa. The couple lived in Conroy prior to moving to a farm north of Ladora in 1940. They later moved to Ladora in 1969. She was a farm wife and homemaker, and also had worked part-time for the South Amana Bakery, Pioneer Hybrids in Marengo, and later as a cook for the Ladora School District. Following the death of her husband in 1984, she had lived in the Ladora, Marengo and Victor Senior Housing and had been a resident of Rose Haven since 1997. Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Cooling of Victor and Donna Doehrmann and her husband, Eldon of Williamsburg; one son, Wayne Kuhnle and his wife, Karen of Ladora; one sister, Mildred Fuller of Marengo; nine grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Dwayne; one grandson, Jonathan Doehrmann; one son-in-law, Darol Coolin; and three sisters, Marie Finley, Irma Wiedemeier, and one in infancy.

The son of Frank and Anna Prosser Bahrenfuse, Barney was born June 8, 1921, in Poweshiek County, Iowa. He was raised in Poweshiek and Jasper Counties and received his education in country schools near his home. As a young man he was employed as a farmhand and also delivered groceries to people’s homes by motorcycle w/sidecar. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II serving with the 81st Wildcat Division as a mechanic in the South Pacific. Upon discharge he attended Cal-Aero Technical School in California where he studied radial-engine mechanics and returned to Iowa following his education. On November 9, 1946, he was married to Doris Tough at the Pleasant View Church in rural Jasper County, a union of nearly 58 years. The couple farmed in Jasper County and for a short time he was employed at Maytag. They moved to their current farm near Kellogg in the mid-1950’s and the couple enjoyed wintering in Florida since 1979. He was a member of the Pleasant View Church. Barney held a passion for tractors and enjoyed working on older models, especially Case tractors. He enjoyed attending auctions, farm sales, and antique tractor shows. He had traveled throughout the continental United States and enjoyed meeting with his Army buddies at reunions. He looked forward everyday to socializing with family and friends over a cup of coffee. Survivors include his wife, Doris; two children, Carol Ohm and her husband, Orville of Alden, Minnesota and Robert “Barney” Bahrenfuse of Grinnell; one sister, Edith Lee of Riverton, Wyoming; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Barney died September 8, 2004, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center, at the age of 83. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Raymond, Ralph and Harold.

The daughter of Stefanie “Stevi” Ehler, she was born January 17, 1986, in Marshalltown. She was raised in Gilman and was a 2004 graduate of East Marshall High School. She was employed at the Meskwaki Casino in Tama. Survivors include her mother, Stevi of Killduff; one brother, Levi Ehler of Gilman; her fiancé, Levi Todd of Gilman; her grandparents, Henry and Janis Ehler of Kellogg; two aunts and uncles, Trai and Lori Ehler of Fairbury, Nebraska and Jurgen and MariAnn Ehler of Tipton; and several cousins.

Lorraine “Lorry” June Piske Krumm, 73, widow of Floyd H. Krumm, 4680 Oakwood Drive, died Monday, September 13, 2004 at Providence Heart Institute, Columbia, S.C. Mrs. Krumm was born in Woodstock, Ill. on June 4, 1931, and was the daughter of the late Chris and Margaret Anderson Piske. She was a graduate of Woodstock Community High School, Woodstock, Ill., and Sherman Hospital School of Nursing, Elgin, Ill. Mr. and Mrs. Krumm moved to Columbia, S.C. in 1964 from Elgin, Ill. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and very active in the Bethel United Methodist Women-Belle Dent Circle. Surviving are her daughter, Dr. Debra Krumm Gintautas (Peter) of Ft. Collins, Colo; a son, Kevin L Krumm of Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Mrs. Marilyn P. Hansen (Jim) of Brodhead, Wis., and numerous aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Raymond H. Dillon, 75, of Grinnell, died on Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Mr. Dillon was born on March 17, 1929, near Searsboro, Iowa to Ernest and Marie Robinson Dillon. He was raised in the Searsboro area and attended rural schools. Following his education, he worked as a farmhand on various farms near Searsboro, Lynnville and Alden, Iowa. He moved to Grinnell in 1996 and resided at Brookside South. He enjoyed photography, electronics and restoring antiques. He is survived by one brother, Donald Dillon of Cedar Rapids; two half brothers, Alfred Steen of Searsboro and Bill Steen of Des Moines; one half sister, Hazel Miller of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Earl Dillon.

Vernon was born the son of Harold and Alma Anderson Weaver on August 6, 1926 on the family farm near Gilman, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the Gilman and Newburg areas. He was a 1943 graduate of the Newburg High School. Dewey was enlisted into the second World War in 1944. He served with the 124th Army Infantry, where he earned the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Bronze Star Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on November 28, 1946 in Ft. Sheridan, Illinois. Dewey attended Drake University and earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting. Following his education, he was employed with the Internal Revenue Service as an auditor. He was a dedicated employee with the IRS for much of his life. Dewey loved to play checkers and chess. He would take his checkers playing talent to the Iowa State Fair to compete with many people across the State of Iowa. Dewey was a hard-worker. His family reflected on the times when he was a young boy working with his father on the farm who could shell 1,000 bushels of corn per hour. He was an avid reader who would venture to the public library every morning to read the daily newspaper. He enjoyed watching sporting events, especially the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. Dewey is survived by his sisters, Joyce Humphrey and her husband Donald of Kellogg, Doris Logsdon of Sioux City, Iowa, and Darlene Clark of Grand Island, Nebraska; and his several nieces and nephews. Dewey passed away Thursday, September 16, 2004 at Genesis Medical Center in Davenport. He was seventy-eight years of age and was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother Derald.

Lucille I. Manatt, 91, of Grinnell and formerly of Brooklyn, died on Sunday, September 19, 2004, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Memorials in her name may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church of Grinnell. The daughter of Eugene William and Golda Decker Hughes, Lucille was born on October 21, 1912, at Campbell, Minnesota. She moved to Iowa at an early age with her parents and attended schools in Guernsey and Victor. In 1929, she graduated from Hartwick High School. On March 22, 1930, she was married to Henry E. Manatt in Grinnell, Iowa. The couple lived their entire married life on a farm near Brooklyn. Following her husband’s death in October of 1981, she moved to Grinnell to make her home. She was a long time member of the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school for 20 years and served as Deacon in the church. She was recently a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Grinnell and she was active in the Women’s Fellowship. She served as a 4-H Leader in Warren and Bear Creek Townships, was Warren Township and Poweshiek County Farm Bureau Women’s Chairman and served on the Poweshiek County Extension Committee. She was also a volunteer in the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in Grinnell. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Jerry Doonan of Grinnell; and a son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Lucille Manatt of Newton; four granddaughters, Joan Randall of Olathe, Kansas, Jill (Mrs. Paul) Wagner of Grinnell, Beth (Mrs. Alex) Gonzalez of Dublin, Ohio and Jan (Mrs. Eric) Bailey of St. Cloud, MN; eight great grandchildren, Emily Randall, Jason and Nicholas Wagner, Daniel, Lucy and Emma Gonzalez and Katelyn and Rachel Bailey; two sisters, Edith Martinson of Marengo and Marlene Gritsch of Grinnell; one brother, Loren Hughes of Pittsburg, CA; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and four brothers, Cloyd, Melvin, Elza and Merle Hughes.

Roger was born on July 24, 1933, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Warren and Stella Hansen Bailey. He was raised in the Grinnell area and attended rural schools and Grinnell High School. During the Korean Conflict, he served with the U.S. Army in Germany. On March 7, 1953, he was married to Bessie Schmidt in Grinnell. The couple lived in Grinnell and he worked for various construction companies, Ahrens Manufacturing Company and for Eddie Anderson. He was also employed in Plant #2 at the Maytag Company in Newton for 31 years. He was a member of the Grinnell American Legion and the VFW. Survivors include his wife, Bessie; one daughter, Cindy Asay of Eugene, Oregon; three sons, Wayne, Loren and Eric Bailey, all of Grinnell; and one sister, Donna Yancy of Mesa, AZ; 12 grandchildren; and one great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Warren “Bud” Bailey.

A memorial fund will be established for Arbor Lake in Grinnell.

Dorothy was born on February 14, 1916, in Malcom, Iowa to Reuben and Neta May Campbell. She attended rural schools at the Irish Ridge School and in Lincoln Township. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Victor on October 22, 1936. On January 27, 1935, she was married to Ernest Carl Timm Jr. at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The couple farmed northwest of Ladora, where they maintained their home all of their married life. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church of Victor and was also a member of the Ladies Aid of the church. Dorothy enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, crafts and painting figurines. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Julie and Dave Read of Ladora, Jerry and Bess Timm of Victor, James and Gwenda Timm of Victor, and Don and Judy Timm of Sibley; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and one brother, James Morrison of Bloomfield, Iowa; and one sister, Cleo Christian of Rosemead, California. Dorothy died on Sunday, September 19, 2004, at Rosehaven Nursing Home in Marengo. She was 88 years of age, and she was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Mildred Johnston, Mary Grier and Esther Howard; two brothers, Charles (Bud) Morrison and Billy Morrison; and one grandson, Daniel Timm.

Mr. Newcomer was born on August 13, 1939, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Frank and Lucille Thompson Newcomer. He was raised in the Newburg area and graduated from Newburg High School with the Class of 1957. He was a lifelong resident of the Newburg Community, where he operated a grain and livestock farm. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Newburg Farmer’s Co-op, and the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church. Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Charles and Patricia Newcomer of Des Monies; one niece, Amy Tesar of Des Moines; one nephew, Ned Newcomer of Phoenix, AZ; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church and sent in care of Charles Newcomer, 3110 Fluer Drive, Des Moines, Iowa 50321.

Maggie Lee Foster, age 84, of Kellogg, died Sunday, September 19, 2004 at her home. A funeral service for Maggie will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, September, 23 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Mike Johnson officiating. Casket bearers will be Andrew Brown, Randy Holmes, Michael Hutchinson, Junior Sharp, John Streeter, and John Sumner. Interment will be at Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg. Visitation hours will be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be directed to the Kellogg Historical Society or to Grinnell Regional Hospice. Maggie was born the daughter of Aught and Mollie Delk Stepp on March 14, 1920 in Monticello, Kentucky. She was raised and educated in Monticello, Kentucky and rural schools in Jasper County, Iowa. Maggie was united in marriage to LeRoy W. Foster on July 3, 1950 at the United Methodist Church in Montezuma. Maggie enjoyed fishing, from the mountains of Wyoming to a small farm pond in Iowa. Her family was the love of her life. She enjoyed traveling, while her health allowed her to do so. Her most memorable trips were her two trips to Hawaii and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. Maggie enjoyed attending estate sales and auctions looking for various antiques and treasures. She loved to be outdoors taking care of her flower garden and yard. Maggie is survived by her daughters, Faye Cortright Hutchinson and her husband Larry of Gilbert, Arizona, Sue Cortright Streeter of Ames, Iowa, Cynthia Foster Brown and her husband Michael of Rock Springs, Wyoming, and Mollie Foster Sumner and her husband Charles of Kellogg, Iowa; her brother, Floyd Stepp of Grinnell; her sister, Flonnie Stepp Matherly of Grinnell; her fifteen grandchildren; her eleven great grandchildren; and her several nieces and nephews. Maggie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband LeRoy; her daughter Judith Cortright Doane; her brother, Menvil Stepp; her sisters, Della Stepp, Pearl Stepp Clifton; and an infant sister.
