The son of John Wherry and Nelle Louise Atherton Morton, he was born June 25, 1920, in Guernsey. He was raised in Guernsey and was a 1939 graduate of Guernsey High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served with the 32nd Red Arrow Division in Australia and New Guinea during World War II as a squad and assistant platoon Sgt. in combat. He returned to Guernsey after his discharge in 1945. He was married to Alice Laurine Heller August 25, 1941, in Unionville, Missouri. He was employed at the Guernsey Elevator for 19 years and later went to work for the Iowa Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector for Jasper, Marshall, Poweshiek and Iowa Counties. He retired in 1982. He was an active member of the Guernsey Methodist Church. Survivors include seven children, Larry Morton of Grinnell, Paul Morton of Cedar Rapids, John and Tom Morton, both of Guernsey, Joy Douglas of Brooklyn, James Morton of Victor, and Mary Steele of Grinnell; 19 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2000; two brothers, Lauren and Dale Morton; one sister, Faun Norden; and one great great grandchild.

He was born on March 17, 1942, in Gilman, Iowa to Henry and Elizabeth McClean Hauersperger. He was raised near Newburg and attended Newburg schools. On January 12, 1964, he was married to Elizabeth Davis at the Hickory Grove Church near Newburg. The couple farmed near Newburg and in 1987, they moved to Grinnell. He was a custodial supervisor at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. The couple moved to acreage south of Grinnell in 1994. He was a member of the Hickory Grove Church and a trustee of the Hickory Grove Cemetery Association. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Hauersperger of Grinnell; one son, Henry Hauersperger of Grinnell; one daughter, Christine Stockman of Des Moines; one grandson, Andrew Hauersperger of Grinnell; two step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; and his sister, Henrietta Bogan of State Center. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Harriet Macy, 95, of Grinnell, died Saturday, November 13, 2004 at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center in Grinnell. A funeral service for Harriet Macy will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, November 16, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Pete Schuler officiating. Casket bearers will be Dwight Beyer, Steve Davis, Kevin Schultz, Brian Van Roekel, Bradley Van Roekel, and Brent Van Roekel. Interment will be at Woodland Cemetery in Lynnville. Public visitation hours will be held from 12 noon to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Smith Funeral Home. The family will be present for a time of visitation prior to the funeral service beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be directed to the Lynnville Historical Museum. Harriet Van Roekel Macy was born the youngest of four children to Anthony T. and Frances DeVries Van Roekel on September 4, 1909, at the farm home of her parents in Marion County, Iowa. She attended grade school at Pleasant Grove and was a Monroe High School graduate with the class of 1927. She shared her musical ability while a young girl by playing in the LeGrand Orchestra, made up of a group of young people in her neighborhood. She played both the piano and the bass violin. She attended Central College in Pella, Iowa, where she graduated in 1933 with degrees in both English and Music. Following her graduation, she taught 3rd and 4th grades and Vocal Music in Lynnville for two years. It was there that she met Howard and they were married in her mother’s home in Pella on September 12, 1936. After her marriage to Howard, she became a homemaker in Lynnville, where she gave private piano lessons, sometimes going to her students’ homes to do so. When Howard entered military service during World War II and was stationed in St. Paul, Minnesota, Harriet followed him there where she was employed by the Army Engineers and volunteered with the American Red Cross. Howard was soon sent overseas, but Harriet remained in St. Paul, where she lived with Roscoe and Mabel Macy, Howard’s brother and sister-in-law. Following the end of the war, they returned to Lynnville, where Howard went into business with his father. In 1950, Howard and his brother, Earl, operated concrete plants in both Lynnville and Grinnell, and a few years later, Howard and Harriet purchased the Searsboro Feed and Grain business in Searsboro. An astute businesswoman, Harriet spent her mornings in Lynnville doing bookwork for the cement business and her afternoons in Searsboro doing bookwork for the feed and grain business. Even after selling the Searsboro Feed and Grain business, she continued doing bookwork for them. After living in Lynnville for many years, in 2000 she moved to a Mayflower apartment in Grinnell to be closer to Howard, who was then a resident of the Mayflower Home Health Care Center. For the past year, she has been a resident of the health care center. Harriet was a faithful member of the Lynnville Friends Church, where she served as organist and choir director for many years. She also was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Lodge, Soroptomist Club, and a charter member of the Lynnville Women’s Club. Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, who died August 21, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Anthony T. and Frances DeVries Van Roekel; her two brothers, John A. Van Roekel and Henry Van Roekel; her sister, Edna Van Roekel Terpstra; and her nephew, Bruce D. Van Roekel. She will be lovingly missed by her family of nieces and nephews, Kay McGarry of Surprise, Arizona, Rae Gregory of Newton, Iowa, Dwain Van Roekel of Newton, Tony Van Roekel of Plano, Texas, Tim Van Roekel of Batavia, Ohio, and Merritt Van Roekel of Monroe, Iowa.

Frances was born on January 18, 1914, to William and Bertha (Wallick) Sherwood of Victor, Iowa. She was raised in the house she was born in, educated in the Victor school system and graduated from Victor High School with the Class of 1931. Frances was united in marriage to Merlin Hull on September 7, 1933, in the home of her mother in Victor. Following their marriage, the couple farmed northwest of Victor for 25 years. Frances and Merlin moved into Victor in 1958, where Frances continued to be wife, mother and homemaker, as well as working part-time at the Cooperative Telephone Company. She retired from the telephone company in 1977, having served there for 18 years. Frances was a lifetime member of the Victor United Methodist Church and served as president of the Women’s Society for five years and treasurer for four years. She is survived by her three sons, William and his wife, Lisa, of West Des Moines, Robert and his wife, Bonnie, of Cedar Rapids, and Dennis and his wife, Tammy, of Cedar Rapids; ten grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; one step great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Norma and her husband, Burl Wilson, of Seattle, Washington. Frances died on Saturday, November 13, 2004, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She had attained the age of 90 years, 9 months and 26 days and she was preceded in death by her husband, Merlin; her parents; her infant son, Thomas; two sisters, Margaret and Helen; one brother, Howard; and two daughters-in-law, Shirley and Ethel.

Honorary bearers will be Buzz Dean, George Drabant, Denny Elhard, Neil Johnson, Gene Martinson, Gene McCurry, Frank Reitzler and Jim Van Draska. Burial with military rites will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Calvin was born on November 6, 1932, in Hamburg, Iowa to Earl and Martha Armstrong Kingery. He was raised in Hamburg and graduated from high school there. He served with the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. On January 27, 1962, he was married to Sharon Richman in Grinnell. The couple lived in Grinnell and he worked for General Telephone Company for 37 years. He was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Grinnell Eagles. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Kingery of Grinnell; one daughter, Sonja (Terry)Morrison of Grinnell; two sons, Eric (Julie)Kingery and Troy (Jennifer) Kingery, both of Grinnell; six grandchildren, Joshua Morrison, Mitchell, Kaylyn, Caleb, Cody and Issac Kingery; two step grandchildren, Joel Morrison and Kari Gosselink; two step great grandchildren, Kaiden and Dalton Gosselink; and his sister, Doris Brown of Blue Springs, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Donald Brown, 92, of Ames and formerly of Grinnell, died on Saturday, November 20, 2004, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A graveside service and burial for Mr. Brown will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2004, at Westfield Cemetery, rural Grinnell with the Rev. Howard Lord of Montezuma officiating. Pallbearers were Gary Edwards, Casey Hayes, Dan Krogman, Hank and Keith Kohler, and Kirk Schmatz. Memorials be directed towards the Israel Family Hospice House. The son of Edward and Anna Wossing Brown, he was born March 20, 1912, in Marshalltown. He was raised in Marshalltown and received his education in the Marshalltown School District. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II and served as a platoon sergeant in the Philippines. He was married to Jelene Steenhoek June 4, 1947, in Grinnell. The couple made their home in LeGrand and Montour prior to moving to Grinnell in 1951. He was employed as a carpenter throughout central Iowa, including work on the Iowa State Campus and Golden Sun Feeds and Mayflower Home in Grinnell, and for several years (1964 to 1968) he was active in farming near Grinnell. He retired in 1974 and continued to make his home in Grinnell. He later moved in 1999 to Ames. He was a member of the Carpenters Local 106, Odd Fellows Lodge, and was active with the Grinnell Senior Center and Meals on Wheels. Survivors include three children, Janis Reams of Montezuma, Darwin Brown of Council Bluffs and LeRoy Brown of Ames; six grandchildren, Teri Lauters, Amy Taylor, and Joshua, Jessica, DJ and Casey Brown; and three great-grandchildren, Brian, Taylor, and Aaron Lauters. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one daughter, Beverly Geisler.

Trisha Agnew Dean, 40 of Grinnell died Friday, November 19, 2004, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 24, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church, with Deacon Diane Eberhart officiating. Music will be provided by Kathy and Andrea O’Connor. Pallbearers will be Brian Crawford, Mark Guthrie, Mike Hasselbrink, Eric Kingery, Dale Lohse, David Richman, Todd Schmidt, and Steve Schultz. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 6:30 to 8:30 Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Trisha Agnew Dean Memorial Fund. Trisha was born May 6, 1964, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Robert E. Agnew and Judith Richman Agnew. She lived in Iowa City until the age of 3 when she moved to Grinnell, where she attended school and graduated in 1982. She attended UNI following graduation and graduated from cosmetology school in Iowa City in 1983. She received her teaching certificate from DMACC in May, 2004, and had planned to continue her education towards her teaching degree through Buena Vista College. She was currently a paraprofessional at Grinnell Middle School. In 1985, she was married to Christopher Sears in Grinnell and they had two children. They were divorced in 1995. In May 2001, she was married to Eric Wayne Dean in Grinnell. She loved her family and friends, animals, and children. She was especially happy with her position at the middle school where she worked with young people. She loved music, playing cards and games, crossword puzzles and playing golf. She was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings. Survivors include her husband, Eric of Grinnell; two children, Emily Ann Sears, 15, and Jacob Alan Sears, 11, both of Grinnell; her parents of Montezuma; one brother, Robert Jay Agnew and his wife, Heather and their children, Trevor and Meghan of Cedar Rapids; her father and mother-in-law, Carroll “Buzz” and Phyllis Dean of Grinnell; a sister-in-law, Susan Dean of Des Moines; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

She was born on August 29, 1936, in Grinnell, Iowa to Earl and Ruth Saunders Fleener. She was raised in Searsboro and attended public schools there. Following her education she worked at the Poweshiek County Courthouse. She was married to Charles Bryan and to this union was born four sons, Keith, Kyle, Kerry and Kelly. The couple later divorced. On April 8, 1972, she was married to Richard Anderson in Rock Island, Illinois. The couple lived in Searsboro and she worked as a sales representative for the WENCO Company in Grinnell. She also worked for Bates Flowers and the Mayflower Home in Grinnell. She was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Lodge and she formerly served on the Searsboro City Council. Janet enjoyed fishing with her family and friends, bowling, golfing, playing cards, cross word puzzles, bird houses, Emmit Kelly clowns. and traveling throughout to the United States and England. Survivors include three sons and their spouses, Kyle and Terri Bryan of New Sharon, Kerry and Marlene Bryan of Searsboro and Kelly and Sammi Bryan of Lynnville; seven grandchildren; her step mother, Ann Fleener of Grundy Center; one brother and his spouse Clair and Stacie Fleener of Omaha, Nebraska; her sister-in-law, Janet Fleener of London, England; and two close friends, Debbie and Wanda. Janet died on Friday, November 26, 2004, at the Comfort House in Pella. She was 68 years of age, and she was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Keith; and one brother, Jimmy Fleener.

Holly Laverne Mikles was born on December 23, 1915, at Exline, Iowa. The family moved to Searsboro, Iowa, where he attended public school. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy. On November 14, 1936, he was married to Evelyn Maxine Tish in Unionville, Missouri. The couple lived in Kellogg, Iowa and later in areas of Nebraska, California and Colorado before moving to Mesa, Arizona in 1979. He is survived by two sons, Roger of Tucson, Arizona and Michael of Mesa, Arizona; three grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on May 3, 1999.

John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Lorna Lang will play keyboard and vocalist will be Barbara Chitwood. Pallbearers will be Leo Altimeier, Randy Argotsinger, Craig Bern, Jim Brown, Tom Latimer, Dean Longnecker, Jim Pefferman, Stuart Petersen, Jim Schmidt, Terry Schmidt, Dan Staker, and Carter Thomson. A private family burial service will follow Thursday, March 3 at Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice. The son of Elvin “Curly” and Minnie Snittjer Juhl, he was born April 7, 1945, in Waterloo, Iowa. He was raised in Reinbeck and was a 1963 graduate of Reinbeck High School and a 1968 graduate of Iowa State University. He was married to Sandra Larsen June 17, 1967, in Reinbeck. The couple moved to the Des Moines area and he was employed for several years with Ernst & Ernst while living in Johnston, Beaverdale, and Urbandale. The couple later moved to Grinnell in 1972 where he was employed as a C.P.A. with Miracle Recreation and then in 1987 for Miraco. He owned and operated Daso Electrostatic Refinishing, inc. from 1991 to 2004 and also did some accounting work with ASI Sign Systems in the early 1990’s. He served on the Ahrens Foundation Board and ASI Board of Advisors, and was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Lodge, Grinnell Booster Club, and Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants. Survivors include his wife, Sandy of Grinnell; three children, Jason Juhl and his wife, Sarah of Edmonds, Oklahoma, Jackie Harris and her husband, Dave of Grinnell, and Jamie Juhl and her fiancé, Dan Kirby of Waterloo, Iowa; his father, Elvin “Curly” of Reinbeck; and two grandchildren, Clayton and Macy Harris of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Velda L. Rutherford, 76, of Grinnell, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2005, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m., Monday, June 27, 2005, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Len Eberhart officiating. Honorary bearers will be her grandchildren. Inurnment will be held privately before the service at Pleasant Township Cemetery in Ewart. Visitation hours will be held from 1 p.m to 8 p.m. on Monday evening at the Smith Funeral Home, with the family present to greet friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Dollars for Scholars. Velda was born the daughter of Ralph Larsen and Irene Murphy on March 13, 1929, in Grinnell, Iowa. She was raised and educated in Grinnell and graduated with the Grinnell High School class of 1947. Velda was united in marriage to Robert Martin Rutherford on June 4, 1949, at her parent’s home in Grinnell. To this union were born their children, Rebecca, Stephen, David and Mark. She was employed with Davidson’s clothing store in Grinnell, Maid Rite restaurant in Grinnell for several years, and at Spurgeon’s clothing store for twenty-five years. During her twenty-five years at Spurgeon’s, Velda was often referred to as the “candy lady.” She always made sure her grandchildren and their friends were supplied with candy. Velda loved reading and for years kept everyone supplied with paperback books. She loved going dancing and modeling Vintage Clothing with Alice. She also enjoyed traveling and vacationing with Carroll and Carolyn. Velda and Bob rarely missed an event that their grandchildren were participating in. Velda is survived by her husband Bob of Grinnell; her children, Rebecca (Joe) Edelen of Brooklyn, Iowa, Stephen (Pat) Rutherford of Grinnell, Mark (Vickie) Rutherford of Grinnell; her grandchildren, Michael, Jonathan, Karin, and Brian Edelen, Sara, Amanda and Todd Rutherford, Holli and Nicholas Rutherford; her great grandchild, Cameron Farmer; her sister, Joanne Dimit of Grinnell; and several nieces and nephews. Velda was seventy-six years of age and was preceded in death by her parents, and her son, David.

Shirley was born on October 19, 1945, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Donald and Mildred Arment Cogley. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1963. She received a BS degree in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota. On May 5, 1968, she was married to Charlie David Winters in Grinnell. The couple lived in Des Moines, where she worked at Iowa Lutheran Medical Center and Des Moines General Hospital. The family moved to Grinnell in 1976 and she worked as a lab technician at the Light and Ferguson Medical Clinic. She received a degree in Business Management from Drake University and worked in the Human Resource Center of Iowa Methodist Medical Center. She was currently the Director of Human Resources at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. She enjoyed cooking and hosting for family and friends, especially during the holidays. She is survived by her daughter, Debra (Heath) Jepson of Grinnell; her son, Chad Winters of Grinnell; two grandchildren, Stone Jepson and Makayla Tuttle, both of Grinnell; and her mother, Mildred Cogley of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Cogley.

Memorials may be directed to the Shirley Winters Memorial Fund and sent in care of Debra Jepson, 1423 Prairie Street, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

The son of Debra Steinmetz Fitzgerald and Mark Lageveen, Matt was born July 1, 1990, in Pella. He was raised in Montezuma and attended school through the 7th grade there. He was baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Montezuma where he regularly attended church. He moved to Grinnell in 2003 and was a current member of the Grinnell High School Class of 2008. He was employed at Michael's Restaurant since the fall of 2005. Matt was a proud member of the "undefeated" sophomore football team and was looking forward to being a member of the tennis team. He also enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. He was an avid fan of the Michigan Wolverines. Matt was very devoted to his family and a loyal friend. He was loving, kind, helpful, and energetic. He loved his family and enjoyed doing family activities. As a child he enjoyed tractors and playing with sticks and legos, and as he grew older he enjoyed hanging out with his friends and playing various games on PS2, PSP and X-Box. He loved homemade popcorn, cherry cheesecake, brownies, and chocolate milk. He held a genuine care for others and was a "big hearted" kid. He loved everyone. Survivors include his mother and step-father, Debra and Stanley Fitzgerald of Grinnell; his father and step-mother, Mark and Julie Lageveen of Montezuma; one sister, Marisa Lageveen of Grinnell; two brothers, Adam Lageveen of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Ian Fitzgerald of Grinnell; two sisters, Joni Meyer of Lynnville and Jerrica Rankin of Grinnell; and his grandparents, Anthony and Doris Steinmetz and Arthur and Donna Lageveen, all of DeMotte, Indiana. Matt died March 9, 2006, at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines, at the age of 15. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Carol Lageveen; and his aunt Susan Lageveen-Klemp.

Almira was born on June 12, 1917, on the family farm in Fremont Township, Butler County, Iowa, to William and Augusta Obermoeller Nieman. She graduated with the Class of 1934 from Garnavillo High School and in 1939, she received a degree from the Marshalltown School of Nursing. On January 6, 1940, she was married to Glenn Andrew McDonough at her parent’s home in Clarksville, Iowa. Almira and Glenn operated a grain and livestock farm northeast of Grinnell and she worked for a brief time at the former St. Francis Hospital in Grinnell. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grinnell and she enjoyed reading, gardening, raising flowers and her grandchildren. Survivors include her son, Howard McDonough of Grinnell; two daughters, Carolyn Hildreth of Ankeny and Barbara Van Zante of Grinnell; ten grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and one sister, Vineva Yover of El Paso, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Byron; her parents; three brothers, William, Galen and Nathan Nieman; and one sister, Ila Henning.

Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell.

Mary Gritsch, 96 of Brooklyn and formerly of Grinnell, died Friday, March 17, 2006, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services for Mrs. Gritsch will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Reynolds, Jr., pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, officiating. Organist will be Susie Edelen. Vocalist will be Rev. Herb Knudten. Pallbearers will be Brian Francies, Chad Hunter, Don Cox, Clayton and Clinton Earhart and David Anderson. Honorary bearers will be Jo Earhart, Lu Francies, Dana Anderson, Diana and Michael Haptonstall, and Don Ahrens. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Brooklyn. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Brooklyn First United Presbyterian Church Chair Lift Fund. The daughter of John and Matilda Wadsworth Henry, she was born March 4, 1910, in Brooklyn where she was raised and educated. She was married to Marvin J. Gritsch on June 6, 1928, at the First United Presbyterian Church parsonage in Brooklyn. The couple farmed north of Brooklyn until 1941 and then moved to a farm north of Malcom. They retired to Brooklyn in 1960 and later moved to Grinnell in 1986. She had been a resident of Brookhaven Nursing Home in Brooklyn for several years. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn and several church clubs including Trinity Lutheran Women’s Circle. She was also a member of the Brooklyn Women’s Club. Survivors include two children, Gene Gritsch and his wife, Marlene of Grinnell and Norma Anderson of Scottsdale, Arizona; five grandchildrenJo Earhart, LyAnn Harter-Francies, Dana Anderson, Diana Haptonstall and David Anderson; six great-grandchildren, Chad Harter, Clayton Earhart, Zachary Haptonstall, Mikala Haptonstall and Perry Anderson; and three great great-grandchildren, Tylo Mohr, Ceaton Harter and Jade Harter. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, John Henry; one son-in-law, Hal Anderson; and one granddaughter, Celeste Anderson.
