Doris was born on July 3, 1921, in Putnam County, Missouri, to Nevens and Ruby Chapman Bates. She was raised in rural areas in northern Missouri and southern Iowa. In 1939, she graduated from Corydon High School and later attended the Iowa School of Cosmetology in Des Moines. Following her education she moved to Greenfield, Iowa and worked as a beautician. On January 30, 1944, she was married to Clifford C. Welcher in Greenfield. The couple lived in Greenfield, where she operated the Vanity Beauty Salon and her husband operated Crooks Clothing. They moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 1999. While living in Greenfield she was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Mother’s Club, the Business Women’s Club and she was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She attended the First Friends Church in Grinnell. Her hobbies included dancing, golfing, raising flowers, playing the harmonica, horses and fishing trips to Minnesota. Survivors include three daughters, Cynthia (Jack) Sherman of Grinnell, Sarah Frasier of Rocklin, CA and Susan (Michael) Baker of Minneapolis, MN; eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford; her parents; and one sister, Marietta Bates, who died in infancy.

Memorials may be directed to either of the hospices in Greenfield and Grinnell, St. Francis Manor of Grinnell or to the First Friends Church in Grinnell.

Joan Alberta Golob

Joan Golob, 68, of Grinnell and formerly of Montezuma, died peacefully Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at her home of cancer surrounded by her family. A celebration of life service for family and friends will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice. The daughter of Cecil and Hazel Wood Snook, she was born September 29, 1937, in Grinnell. She was raised and educated in Montezuma and later received her teaching certificate. She taught for several years in the Urbana, Iowa school district and later returned to Montezuma where she was employed as a secretary for a local law firm. On June 30, 1973, she was married to George Golob, Sr. in Des Moines. The couple made their home there for 22 years and she was a homemaker. After her husband’s death in 1995, she moved to Grinnell. Joan enjoyed crafts and sewing, collecting rabbits and country theme motifs. She especially enjoyed attending craft shows with her cousin, Lucille. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Mary Brandt and her husband, Joe of Marion; one nephew, Tony Snook and his wife, Christine of Marengo; one niece, Heather Poffenberger and her husband, Doug of State Center; and six great nieces and nephews, Levi, Taylor and Cole Snook of Marengo, Ashton and Acelyn Damisch and Emma Poffenberger of State Center. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Lowell and Richard Snook; and one nephew, Steve Snook.

Frank Thys, age 92, of Victor, died Saturday, March 25, 2006, at his home. A funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor with Rev. Brian J. Shepley officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Victor. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor beginning at 12 noon on Monday with the family present to greet friends from 5 – 8 p.m. on Monday evening. A vigil service will be held at 8 p.m. at the funeral home on Monday evening with a rosary service to follow. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Frank Thys Memorial Fund. Frank is survived by his sons, Robert (Glenda) Thys of Tipton, Iowa, John (Rita) Thys of Victor, Tom (Jean) Thys of Victor, and Mike Thys of Brooklyn, Iowa; nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Scandridge of Victor.

Clara was born on September 24, 1912, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, to Howard and Ala Cummings Byam. She was raised in Sioux Rapids and graduated from Sioux Rapids High School. In 1938 she graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Home Economics Education. Following her education she was a Home Demonstration Agent in Western Iowa. On December 15, 1940, she was married to George Alwin Brown in Ames, Iowa. The couple operated a farm south of Grinnell. They also worked in partnership for the Cedar Valley Farm Business Association for 26 years. In February of 1993 she moved to the Mayflower Homes in Grinnell. Clara was an active member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational in Grinnell where she worked diligently in the 1950s to raise funds to build the current church facility. She also served on various church committees and was a member of the Poweshiek County 4-H Board. She served as a 4-H leader to the Grant Girls Group and was a judge for surrounding clubs and county fairs. Clara was a member of Chapter JB, PEO and taught adult education courses in sewing and tailoring. Her hobbies included playing bridge, reading, sewing, quilting,embroidery and conversations with friends. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Nancy Wolff, Greg (Dee Cafcules) Brown and Doug Brown, all of the Grinnell and Diane (Paul) Harrington of Mount Vernon, Iowa; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Judith Kay Brown; one great grandson, Liam Nosek; one sister, Mae Davis; and one brother, P.L. Byam.

Floyd was born on July 7, 1915, in Monticello, Kentucky to Aught and Mollie Delk Stepp. The family moved to Kellogg, Iowa, where he attended rural school. On June 19, 1937, he was married to Wanda Hill in Newton, Iowa. The couple lived in Grinnell and later moved to Kellogg, where he worked for the Midwest Manufacturing Company as a die setter for over 40 years. He retired in 1980 and moved to St. Francis Manor in Grinnell in 2003. Floyd was a member of the Kellogg Volunteer Fire Department and the United Molders Union. He enjoyed hunting, camping and traveling. He is survived by one son, Gordon (Bev) Stepp of Grinnell; one daughter, Fontella (Wilbur) Terpstra of Lynnville; five grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and one sister, Flonnie Matherly of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1998; his parents; one son, Richard Stepp, who died in infancy; one brother, Menvil Stepp; and three sisters, Maggie Foster, Pearl Clifton and Della Stepp.

Kenneth was born on August 7, 1913, in Tulare, South Dakota, to Charles and Ethel Stephens Wieting. He was raised in Tulare and graduated from Tulare High School. He also received a degree from Sioux Falls College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. On October 27, 1937, he was married to Pearl J. Lofgren in Sioux Falls. The couple lived in Sioux Falls until 1967 when they moved to Estherville, Iowa. He worked in the personnel department of the John Morrell Company for over 40 years. Following his retirement in 1980 the couple moved to Bentonville, Arkansas. They moved to Grinnell in 1990 to be near their daughter, Kay Davoux. Kenneth was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Grinnell, the Grinnell Kiwanis Club, the Grinnell Country Club and the Seeland Park Board of Directors. He enjoyed volunteering at Grinnell Regional Medical Center, fishing, golfing, quilting and attending sporting events. Survivors include his son, Roger (Kathryn) Wieting of St. Louis, MO; and his daughter, Kay (Paul) Davoux of Grinnell; four grandchildren; and eight great granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one brother, Morris; and three sisters, Lucie, Trewhella and Lois.

James was born on October 29, 1932, in Grinnell to Asa Clayton and Isla Dorothy Anderson Talbott. Jim was raised in Grinnell and a graduate from Grinnell High School with the class of 1953. On November 30, 1954, he married Dorris P. Elhard in Iowa City, Iowa. The couple lived in Grinnell and where he worked for various companies as a truck driver. He retired from International Harvester, where he was a mechanic. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He also loved to tinker with numerous projects. He loved to visit and enjoyed the company of his dog, Sam. Jim is survived by his sons, Jerome Miller and his wife, Laurie, of Beaman and Willis Miller and his wife, Kathy, of Gilman and two sisters, Madesta "Sis" Beason, and her husband, George, of Carthage, Missouri and Mary Trease of Grinnell. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Christina Hauser, Jackie Hauser, Shelly Sonderleiter, Stacy Pfantz, Chanda Kline, Wendy Bertram and Michael Stufflebeam; 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Jim died on Saturday, March 25, 2006, at his home, at the age of 73. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Dorris on August 25, 2005.

Margaret was born on February 19, 1922, near Montezuma, Iowa, to Charles and Mary Henry Bryan. She moved to Grinnell as a young girl and graduated from Grinnell High School. On March 1, 1942, she was married to Robert W. Osborn at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple lived in Grinnell and she was employed at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company, DeLong’s Sportswear Outlet Store and in the office of Dr. John DeMeulenaere. But most of all, she was proud to be a homemaker and mother. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Grinnell and she enjoyed traveling, writing poetry and beauty of God’s nature. She was also an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Mary Ann Osborn of Cedar Rapids; and four sisters, Hazel Brim, Ruth Mithelman and Clara Halstead, all of Grinnell and Roberta “Sally” Todd of Polson, Montana. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one sister, Bessie Wright; and five brothers, William “Abe”, Robert, Roy, Ray and Alvin Bryan.

Bertha was born the daughter of Roy and Una (Turney) Tarvin in Barnes City, Iowa on December 24, 1916. She graduated from Montezuma High School with the class of 1935. On November 25, 1937, she was united in marriage to George Schlegle Vanderburgh in Dutchess County, New York. The couple both had a career with IBM in Poughkeepsie, New York. Her husband George passed away on November 27, 1971. After her retirement in 1977, she was very active in bird watching groups, cross country skiing and mountain climbing. She was a member of the Catskill Mountain 3500 Club. She also did extensive traveling within the United States as well as foreign countries. In 1986, she moved back to Iowa to the Mayflower Home Health Care Center in Grinnell, where she remained very active until she suffered a broken hip. Bertha is survived by her sister Marjorie Little and her husband Floyd of Montezuma; her two sisters-in-law Margaret Tarvin of Grinnell and Ruth Tarvin of Englewood, Florida; and her several nieces, nephews and friends. Bertha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband George; her five brothers: Everett, Cleo, Floyd, Clark and Raymond; and her two sisters, Lois Tarvin and Lodi Slagle.

Steve was born on April 12, 1945, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to Harvey and Ruth Olson Tindle. He was raised on the family farm south of Malcom and attended public schools in Malcom and Brooklyn. He graduated with the Class of 1963 from BGM High School and attended an auto mechanics school in Des Moines. Following his education he served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. On September 2, 1966, he was married to Rita White in Grinnell and to this union was born one daughter, Sara. The couple lived in Grinnell, where he was employed with the Donaldson Company, Paschall Motors, Thorndyke Motors and he was recently employed with the Iowa DOT in the road maintenance department. He was married to Beth Kendall on February 14, 1992 in Newton. Steve was a member of the Eagles Club in Grinnell and he enjoyed fishing, woodworking, NASCAR and his pet dog, Magic. Survivors include his wife, Beth; his daughter Sara (John) Thompson of Grinnell; two grandsons, Jesse and Shane Thompson; and his mother, Ruth Tindle of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his father.

David E. Coons, age 85, of Grinnell, died Thursday, March 29, 2006, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 7, 2006, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Gladstone, Missouri with Rev. Mel Lantz officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to St. Francis Manor. David was born on January 27, 1921, the son of Clayborne and Susan (Rayenscraft) Coons in North Kansas City, Missouri. He was raised in Kansas City and graduated from high school there. On May 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to Betty “Peg” Peterson in Kansas City. To this union, two sons were born: Frederick and David. David was a pharmaceutical sales representative for the American Hospital Supply Company in Kansas City. David is survived by his sons David (Francene) Coons of Grinnell and Fred (Martha) Coons of Grinnell; four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. David was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Betty on January 28, 2006; his sister Irene Shupp; and his brother Harold Coons.

Cecil Brim, 94, of Grinnell died Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services for Mr. Brim will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 8, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, with the Rev. Jack Mithelman, chaplain at Grandview College in Des Moines and Rev. Kirsten Klepfer, pastor of Grinnell First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Organist will be Kathleen McCune and vocalist will be Rich Thorson. Pallbearers will be Ed Adkins, James and Tom Hotchkin, Bob Hoisington, Ed Ingram, Mike Johnson, Doyle “Mike” Mikles, and Sam Osborn. Honorary bearers will be Earl Blair and C.J. “Duke” McCurry. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Francis Manor. The son Earl and Carol May Saylor Brim, he was born October 18, 1911, in Nemaha, Kansas. He lived in Sabetha, Kansas for several years and following the deaths of his father and brother to influenza, he moved with his mother and family to Wyoming in 1918. He moved to a farm north of Kellogg in 1925 and attended Jasper County Public Schools. Following his education he was employed as a farm hand and at Grinnell College. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II. On March 30, 1941, he was married to Hazel Bryan in Grinnell, where the couple made their home. After the war, he returned to Grinnell and was employed for several years with his brother-in-law, LeRoy Mithelman, building houses and later with Lang’s Dairy. In the early 1950’s, he purchased the Skelly service station on 6th Avenue in Grinnell and operated the station until his retirement in 1975. He was a member of the Grinnell First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Hazel of Grinnell and one daughter, Marilyn Wallis of Sherman, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter in infancy, Mary Kay Brim; one sister, Marcele Llamas; and two brothers, Francis and Kenneth Brim.

Elizabeth was born on June 5, 1911, in Old Stone Muckamore, Grange County, North Ireland to Charles and Sarah McAteer Close. She came to the United States with her family on the S.S. Columbia on March 25, 1913. The family settled on a farm near Newburg. She was raised on the family farm and attended a rural school near her home. On December 4, 1937, she was married to Denton Wilkins at Unionville, Missouri. The couple farmed in the Bethel area near Lynnville and in 1963 they moved to acreage in the Westfield area south of Grinnell. She was a homemaker most of her life and later worked in the housekeeping department of Grinnell College for 10 years. She was a member of the Westfield Church and she enjoyed gardening, baking and supporting the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs. She is survived by two sons and their spouses, Robert and Louise Wilkins of Grinnell and Jim and Suzanne Wilkins of Grinnell; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one great grandson, Austin Wilkins; two brothers, Robert and William “Buster” McAteer; three half brothers, Sammie, Charles and Tom Close; one sister, Mae Hunter; and a half sister, Sadie Crowe.

Jocelyn Jean “Jotsie” Blom, 65, of Grinnell died Friday, April 7, 2006, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services for Mrs. Blom will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Len Eberhart and Deacon Diane Eberhart, pastors of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Pianist will be Kathleen McCune. Pallbearers will be Jeff and Randy Angle, Fred Baker, Richard Brignon, Ken Isenberg, Allen Latcham, Bud Smothers, and Roger Stewart. Honorary bearers will be Willie Emmert and Mike Mintle. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grinnell Elks Lodge. The daughter of Francis D. and June Martina Snyder Cox, she was born February 15, 1941, in Grinnell. She was raised in Grinnell and was a 1959 graduate of Grinnell High School. Following her education, she was employed at Grinnell Mutual Re-Insurance Company for a few years. On April 6, 1964, she was married to Gary Blom, in Grinnell. The couple continued to make their home in Grinnell and she was a homemaker and assisted in running the family business, Blom & Criswell Painting and Blom Apartments. She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and Grinnell Elks Lodge. Jotsie took great pride in her appearance and her home. She loved to celebrate the Christmas holidays and especially wrapping presents. She enjoyed collecting dolls and owl figurines, and during the summer months she enjoyed flower gardening and mowing. For many years while her boys were growing up, she enjoyed attending their baseball games. Survivors include her husband, Gary of Grinnell; two sons, Greg and Brian Blom, both of Grinnell; one sister, Dianne Angle of Antioch, California; two nephews, Jeff Angle of Antioch and Randy Angle of Concord, California; and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
